It was like this before I upgraded to xterm 204-0pre1. Or is it due
to my recent upgrade to Xorg? Perhaps not a problem with xterm since
I've just seen that xfontsel shows the same problem.

What are you using? Mmmm...X.Org 6.8.2-11. The same as here. -11 did
not
carry substantial changes. Could it be related to maybe xfs being down or the
server unable to find fonts?

As I've said in my latest message, the change is in 6.8.2.dfsg.1-1.
I didn't notice the problem before because I upgraded from XFree86
to Xorg a few days ago (but I also upgraded xterm).

Yeah, sorry. I had this message queued since yesterday. I saw the
problem,
about Speedo fonts.

Thank you for your report,

I also noticed that the default fontsize is different in XFree86 vs Xorg.

There was some discussion about default fonts that the X server knows about
some time ago (I looked a little for it, but didn't see it - only recall
that it came up in one of those discussions where one person was berating
another for not knowing about this ;-)

I've found the cause of the problem. I have

  /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo

in my font path, and I get the following error:

ay:~ xset fp= /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
xset: bad font path element (#64), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
zsh: exit 255 xset fp= /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo

If I remove this directory from my font path, then the fonts are OK.
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo does contain a fonts.dir file:

I set the font path from my .xinitrc with xset. This has the advantage
of working for Xvnc too.

It was like this before I upgraded to xterm 204-0pre1. Or is it due
to my recent upgrade to Xorg? Perhaps not a problem with xterm since
I've just seen that xfontsel shows the same problem.
