When I tried to purge the package, I got only 1 hunk that failed. Hunk #5 FAILED at 183. You may want to have a look to the /var/lib/dpkg/info/sysv-rc-bootsplash.config /var/lib/dpkg/info/sysv-rc-bootsplash.postinst files. Thanks. I did the following things to safely purge the package: $ cd /etc/init.d/ $ cp rc.orig rc $ cp rc rc.bootsplash $ patch -p0 rc-bootsplash.patch $ apt-get --purge remove sysv-rc-bootsplash For some strange reason it works now. To be double sure, I reinstalled sysv-rc. For some reason, the reject file had problems around line 183 (or 190): *) startup_progress $debug $script $action ;; esac I added and removed a few lines, but to no avail. Oh well, it works now, so I'm more than happy. I guess you could close this bug.
