Bug#536332: default gdm theme font size too large for login box

2009-07-09 Thread Joey Hess
Package: gdm
Version: 2.20.9-1
Severity: normal

I constantly am annoyed by two problems with the font size used in the
default Debian gdm theme (both stable and unstable):

1. The text entry box for username / password is not quite tall
enough for the font used in it. Descenders (ie, the tail of j)
are cut off at the bottom. When entering the password, the circles
that are displayed for each letter entered are also cut off at the
   very bottom.

2. If you use the gui to configure gdm, it prompts for the root
password to be entered. This prompt is too wide for the login
window, and gdm goes ahead and displays part of the words to the left
and part to the right of the ¨window.

It doesn’t happen for the screen resolutions I’m using, so this is
probably a bad interaction between font sizes specified in points vs.
box sizes specified in pixels.

Could you paste the output of xdpyinfo |grep -A2 ^screen ?

Thanks,

Here is the info from 2 systems that have the problem:

dell mini 9s (one running stable, one unstable):

screen #0:
  dimensions:1024x600 pixels (195x113 millimeters)
  resolution:133x135 dots per inch

fujitsu p7120:

screen #0:
  dimensions:800x600 pixels (338x203 millimeters)
  resolution:60x75 dots per inch

My desktop system does *not* have the problem.

screen #0:
  dimensions:1280x1024 pixels (342x271 millimeters)
  resolution:95x96 dots per inch

(Note that also the size of the dots used for password entry has been
changed in unstable and the new small dots are too small to be cut off.)
