Parted already aligns partitions to 1 MiB by default, so it doesn't
really matter that WD's firmware fails to report the correct hw sector
 size.

That is true. In my case, I need to add a drive to an existing RAID
setup and unless I align the partition at 8k, I don't have enough
blocks to join the RAID. That is because the RAID was created using
tools that do not align at 1Mb.

In that case getting the correct logical sector size would not help
because it would still align to 1 MiB. It sounds like what you want
is the ability to specify an arbitrary alignment to use?

Yes, one way or another.

Bug#643625: Ability to override sector size

2011-09-28 Thread martin f krafft
Package: parted
Version: 2.3-8
Severity: wishlist

While libparted fails to detect the true physical sector size of
newer advanced format drives, please allow us to override the
detected size (_device_set_sector_size in libparted/arch/linux.c),
e.g. with a command line switch and/or a command.

Thanks,
