I can confirm that sysvinit-core is no longer required. systemd 208-6 just transitioned to testing. libpam-systemd now has a strict dependency on systemd-sysv (which still conflicts with sysvinit-core).
Forced to choose between losing sysvinit-core and kde-plasma-desktop, I took the risk of replacing sysvinit-core with systemd-sysv. I am happy to report that this went very well. In fact, my system now boots at a scary pace.
