A couple of years ago I did the same thing on a system with over a million users and got much the same result. I thought it was illegal to modify a message. marking a message as read is one example. moving a message from one mailbox to another is another example. although it's not modifying the message itself, it's moving its location, which with a crappy imap server can mean re-writing the contents of two mailboxes. In most jurisdictions it's legal to do almost anything as long as the users are informed in advance. Anyway this list is about solving technical problems not being bothered with laws in some strange part of the world. On Monday 28 February 2005 19:18, Michelle Konzack [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Mailbox is MUCH slower as Maildir, because it must be scaned entierly, but with maildir, most you can spead up the searches while scaning only the Headers. Of course this only applies if there are a significant number of messages larger than the file system block size (usually 4K). If you have a maildir in which every message is less than 4K in size you may find that scanning it is slower than scanning an mbox with the same data. The kernel can do read-ahead for a large file to improve performance. Also an application can do read-ahead (calling setbuf() with a large buffer would be one way to do it). Usually there are a significant number of messages 4K so this is the case. Also Maildir wins on all modifications to the mail store other than adding new messages. Another noteworthy thing about Maildir is that when an application messes up it will probably only trash one message. I use Maildir for my Kmail local storage for this reason, I've had problems in the past with Kmail crashing and corrupting mbox storage. -- http://www.coker.com.au/selinux/ My NSA Security Enhanced Linux packages http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ Bonnie++ hard drive benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/postal/Postal SMTP/POP benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/~russell/ My home page -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#272669: ITP: archmbox -- a simple email archiver written in perl
Package: wnpp Followup-For: Bug #272669 Owner: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archmbox is a simple email archiver written in perl; it parses one or more mailboxes, selects some or all messages and then performs specific actions on the selected messages. At this time archmbox supports mbox and mbx mailbox formats. Messages selection is based upon a date criteria; an absolute date or a days offset can be specified. It is also possible to refine the selection using regular expressions on the header fields of the message. All archived messages are stored in a new mailbox with the same name of the original one plus .archived as extension (this is the default, but can be changed); the archive mailbox can be saved in gz or bz2 compressed format as well. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.10 Locale: LANG=it_IT, LC_CTYPE=it_IT (charmap=ISO-8859-1) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Alternative: Source-Centric Approach [w/code]
Your priority are your users, and if Debian has decided to focus only on some key architectures it would be the best for them to help them switching to Gentoo instead of hacking Debian to become some cheap Gentoo clone for most architectures. I don't view this as being a cheap Gentoo clone. In fact, I view srcinst as being the Gentoo idea, done right. Gentoo has a lot of problems, especially relating to difficult upgrades. Because of our superior packaging system, we are in a great position to hit the ground running and, with a little help from something like srcinst, come up with something that works -- and works better than Gentoo -- in a short amount of time. I'm wondering, what happens if you want to install MOST of the deps from source? Wouldn't it be better to have apt-build (using the official apt algorithms) ask on a dep-by-dep basis whether you want it compiled from source or installed from a binary? Even better, would be to allow apt's preferences file to state whether a specific package should be installed from binary or source, and have the stock apt-get install do what's appropriate. With a few options to set the default mode (binary or source), and to overide the mode for specific packages. And of course, last but not least, apt should keep the package comming from the same source unless specifically changed. Now, if only apt-get understood that a pacakge may be available from more than one mirror at a time... acenic firmware rewrite
Hi, Reading http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/12/msg00078.html I wondered if people would be willing to work on a free firmware for the Tigon II chip. I didn't look at the existing code yet, but looking at the datasheet (http://alteon.shareable.org/firmware-source/12.4.13/tigonbk.pdf.bz2) it doesn't seem to be a very complicated chip to code for. I'm not sure however, how to handle the development in such a way the resulting firmware can be released under a free license without any legal risks. I have 2 PCI boards with the Tigon II chip and a 1000BaseSX PHY. I also have an Ace Director III loadbalancer which consist of 10 Tigon II chips. 8 of those are used for 100BaseT interfaces, 1 has a 1000BaseSX PHY and the 10th is used as a system controller. Comments or ideas welcome. Cheers, Peter (p2). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: docbook-mathml (or w3-dtd-mathml) don't leave to install gnumexp: possible bug
Hi Xan, (BTW, this should really be filed as a bug and probably not posted to devel.) I somehow missed this message b/c it got filtered to the wrong place. Sorry bout that. I'll look into updating the MathML DTD ( registering it, of course), as well as a number of other packages - mostly docbook stuff. As part of the process, I'll look into compatibility/conflicts with the xhtml-mathml-svg-dtd-2 package. And, to anyone else that reads this: I've hesitated to update docbook-xsl, as doing so will break the docbook-website package. Fortunately, we're looking into releasing a new (upstream) docbook-website package real soon, so the inconvenience should be short-lived. How to superceed one package with another?
Hi! I've been the maintainer of tuxracer, a codebase that has been dead upstream for quite some time, after upstream went proprietary. PlanetPenguin Racer (ppracer), a tuxracer-derivat based on the last GPL version of tuxracer, has recently been packaged and uploaded into the archive by Alexander Schmehl. As ppracer is actively maintained and superceeds tuxracer, I wish to remove tuxracer from the archive, including sarge (i know, it's short), and provide users with a transition path to a same-but-superiour game. I am not sure on the necerssary requirement, but are the following steps correct for a smooth transition? tuxracer, tuxracer-data= planetpenguin-racer, planetpenguin-racer-data 1. Upload new ppracer packages with planetpenguin-racer Conflicts/Replaces: tuxracer planetpenguin-racer-data Conflicts/Replaces: tuxracer-data 2. If the RM and or security team feel that a package is likely to be the cause of too much grief for them to support security fixes for, they should explain that fact to the maintainer(s) (if at all possible) and let the maintainer(s) determine if they will take on the burden of supporting the package in stable as well. If the maintainer doesn't want that burden,[1] the maintainer should file a severity serious bug against the package to keep it from being released in stable. In the case of this particular package, the codebase isn't going to rapidly diverge from stable, so any fix that needs to be made in sarge or etch or $release will have to be made in sid as well. Ideally (heh) the security team will just be able to apply the patch the maintainer(s) apply in sid. Whatever the case, if anyone feels that this (or *ANY*) package is a security risk, audit it and file bugs against it. I do, however, still attend to bug reports about the packages, and backport security fixes for vulnerabilities found in php4 that are also present in php3. Heck, I even occasioanlly look at non-security bugs and toss those around a bit. This is probably more than one can so for maintainers of many packages with active upstreams. Someone in this thread mentioned that upstream doesn't send us patches for php3, so how will we know how to fix stuff?!. Well, guess what? They often don't send us patches for php4 either (and wouldn't/won't for php5). The argument that upstream doesn't deliver us neat and tidy security updates for our source packages would probably invalidate 95% of our archive. Maybe not a bad idea. ;) At any rate. I will petition for php3's removal when I'm bored with it, when someone else backs me into a corner to do so, or when I'm convinced no one uses it or cares about it anymore. ... (Missed mcl-04-314, mcl-05-090.) The only difference between mcl 05-096 and the official 05-090 release is the addition of a clmorder(1) manpage. Here's a rephrased snippet from the 05-090 announcement message: Nothing changed in the core clustering algorithm. But: - Better support for diagnostics: mcl can now dump iterand submatrices. - Helper applications for analyzing cluster structure added: clxdo, clxcoarse (primitive hierarchical clustering, undocumented shell scripts, installed in /usr/share/doc/mcl/scripts) and clmorder. - Improvement of sibling applications: large mcxsubs rewrite - cleaner specification language and new modes and options. Also, rewrite of the IO library (umpteenth). Read changelog for details. * Install upstream TODO file. * Removed maintainer scripts: not needed for this package. * mcl-doc.doc-base.clmdist: fixed typo.
