Bits from the release team: the plans for etch

2005-10-14 Thread Steve Langasek
So I guess that taking four months for the release team to comment on
the release of sarge makes the sarge release itself seem timely and
efficient... right? (Of course right.)

Since I already blogged a round of thanks[0] back in June which many of
you have likely already read, I don't intend to repeat myself here.
Instead, I find myself echoing Anthony Towns's announcement of the woody
release, taking this opportunity to single out a few familiar names of
those people who went the extra mile/kilometer/furlong to not just make
Debian a great system, but to also make the sarge release possible.

On behalf of the Debian release team, therefore, I'd like to thank
Anthony Towns himself, both for his efforts in steering sarge the first
90% of the way, and for his patient help whenever we managed to break
the testing software during the second 90% of the way; and Ryan Murray
and James Troup, for their tireless (or at least endless...) work to
keep the ftp-master and autobuilder infrastructure afloat, and also for
that extra-special symlink change at the end which, for reasons that are
a mystery to me, requires two days of hard labor to achieve. ;)

Also deserving of mention are Jeroen van Wolffelaar and Joerg Jaspert,
for the thorough spring cleaning they gave the archive prior to
release; Joey Hess, for wrestling that microcosm of the Debian release
process, our installer; Rob Bradford and Frans Pop, our release notes
editors; and Steve McIntyre and Mattias Wadenstein, who successfully
carried cdimage.debian.org forward into this era of numbered Debian
DVDs.

You guys (and many others[1][2]) all deserve much more kudos than you
get.

Finally, a big thank you to to the rest of our release team who helped
make sarge possible: Colin Watson, Andreas Barth, and Frank
Lichtenheld. I'm not sure any of us knew what we were signing up for,
but it's definitely been a blast. We should do this again some time,
guys!

We Should Do This Again Some Time
~
While everyone else was revelling in the newfound freedom to break
unstable *HARD* these past few months, the release team has been busy
plotting how best to spoil your fun by bringing testing back into line
for another release. We had a release team meeting back in June to
discuss plans for etch, and have set a target date for the release in
December 2006. This is the timeline that we think will get us there:

N-117 = Mon 30 Jul 06: freeze essential toolchain, kernels
N-110 = Mon 7 Aug 06: freeze base, non-essential toolchain (including
e.g. cdbs)
N-105 = Mon 14 Aug 06: d-i RC [directly after base freeze]
N-45 = Wed 18 Oct 06: general freeze [about 2 months after base
freeze, d-i RC]
N = Mon 4 Dec 06: release [1.5 months for the general freeze]

We believe that one key to meeting these deadlines is letting
maintainers know about them well in advance so that they can plan
accordingly, so -- here we are.

The base-freeze used for sarge served its purpose, though for obvious
reasons we would like the base freeze for etch to not be quite so long.
This gives us the beginning of the freeze at the end of July 2006,
starting with the essential toolchain and the kernels; followed a week
later by other toolchain packages and the full base system, and
immediately afterwards the publishing of what we hope will be the final
installer release candidate.

The general freeze will follow in October 2006, lasting roughly as long
as the sarge freeze did.

What's not spelled out in the above timeline is that this basically
leaves people until around the end of the year to to implement any
dastardly plans they have that require sweeping changes to the archive,
followed by another half a year of comparatively minor changes (you
know, the kind that *don't* render half the libraries RC-buggy in a
single upload... coughC++ ABIs/cough), and then the freeze begins.
While this may not sound like a lot of time for feature innovation, you
may get an inkling of our rationale by looking at the release-critical
bug count for etch[3]: in spite of many package removals from testing,
the RC count for etch has been above 400 pretty consistently since the
change to gcc 4.0, which is more than the highest recorded RC bug count
during the sarge release cycle. It will take a concerted effort to get
this bug count under control in the specified time frame, so please help
-- the sooner people get involved with squashing RC bugs (via BSPs,
NMUs, etc.), the better.

Release blockers

Of course, another key to planning a timely release is identifying those
issues that can hold up the release and working to address them early.
In addition to the umbrella category of release-critical bugs, we have
put together a very short list of those issues which we consider release
blockers:

 - gcc 3.3 - 4.0 toolchain transition
 - xfree86 - xorg transition
 - amd64 as an official arch (and the mirror split as a

I agree. That's a bug which should be fixed. A maintainer should know
before uploading whether an upload will cause an override disparity.
It is, however, probably possible to query that information from the
archive automatically during package build. Maybe even a lintian check
doing so is possible (but that would be a lintian check sending out
web queries during checking, which is probably new behavior).

I don't beleive this is true. I just got the following email from the
archive:

Subject: easyh10 override disparity

There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

easyh10_1.0.0-1_alpha.deb: package says priority is optional, override says
extra.
easyh10_1.0.0-1_i386.deb: package says priority is optional, override says
extra.
easyh10_1.0.0-1_sparc.deb: package says priority is optional, override says
extra.

This is most probably an reaction to your upload of 2005-10-13 which
nicely shows the issue that Matthias is complaining about.

[Jeff Stevens]
 If /etc/hosts were changed to:

 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

Resolution of 127.0.0.1 would properly return localhost.

Yeah, but that's all beside the point. There is no point in swapping
the order of the two names unless there be any point in having
localhost.localdomain in there at all.

So far, I haven't heard any reason.

In other words, rather than say here is how we could change the hosts
file so that localhost.localdomain does not cause buggy apps to break,
we are (or should be) asking why should localhost.localdomain be in
there at all?

2 -- Virtually all systems with a hosts file read something like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost alias another alias ...
There is a long historical precedent for listing localhost first,

Well, that's not quite true. As someone else pointed out earlier, AIX
lists loopback localhost. (He said AIX 5.1 or 5.2, but I first
noticed it in 4.1.) I always thought it was kind of strange and
nonstandard ... but on the other hand, most everything in AIX is kind
of strange and nonstandard.

Re: Bug#333603: ITP: acpica-unix -- an ASL compiler/decompiler

2005-10-14 Thread Peter Samuelson

[Mattia Dongili]
 * Package name: acpica-unix

iasl compiles ASL (ACPI Source Language) into AML (ACPI Machine
Language). This AML is suitable for inclusion as a DSDT in system
firmware. It also can disassemble AML, for debugging purposes.

The name is a bit silly, IMO. It's not as though Debian is likely to
get a acpica-win32 package in the near future.

The binary package should probably be named either 'acpica' or 'iasl'.
The source package could, I suppose, be either 'acpica' or
'acpica-unix'. The source package name matters less because users
won't see it directly in most cases.

I'm not very comfortable with the licence language and I'd like somebody
to proof-read it before uploading this stuff.
I'd say this licence grants enough rights, but there are also a lot of
 must.

I'll leave debian-legal to dissect this one in detail - but some bits
of the license are sloppy. For example, requiring approval from the US
Dept. of Commerce before exporting the software - from *any* country -
is probably not the intent; they just forgot to stipulate that they
meant exporting it from the United States. Forcing all licensees,
regardless of location, to agree to comply with the U.S. Export
Administration Regulations is silly, and probably unenforceable. The
copyright notice says all rights reserved right before the rest of
the license spells out several rights which are, in fact, not reserved.
The license also tells us we *must* read it before *using* the
software, as though it were some sort of click-wrap - this too is
probably unenforceable, but if enforceable, is non-free. (How is
Debian supposed to ensure that users read the license before using the
software? What if all packages said that?)

OK, I have modified netcfg so that it writes

127.0.0.1 localhost

to /etc/hosts.

From now on let's consider at least the following two phenomena to be
bugs:

* The application expects to be able to resolve 'localhost.localdomain'
  to an IP address.
* The application breaks if 'localhost.localdomain' is included on the
  127.0.0.1 line in /etc/hosts.

Fwiw, they *are* listed on the PTS Package Tracking system,
packages.qa.debian.org/$pkg) page of every package, so maintainers can know of
them before upload (when they look at their own PTS page anyway).

Indeed there currently is no notification when changes are made, typically
this happens due to a manual email from the person doing the changes, who can
then also explain why. This didn't happen here, my fault -- a large scale
change didn't get completed, and hence not announced properly for the part
that did get completed either yet.

No, the title of the bug report is wrong and confused the script

The wnpp scripts were confused by the (gamatically correct) and before
the last item on the list. I've retiteled the bug to correct this.
Should this happen again (and might be a prime candidate), you can do
this yourself by using the control interface to bugs.debian.org.

Automated mailing to all maintainers of packages depending on X?

Hi,

does anybody know about a ready-made script that would extract all
package names and maintainers of packages depending on X from the
Packages file, and send e-mails to them, replacing the package name for
some boilerplate text in a text I feed it:

Dear Maintainer of PACKAGE,

you receive this mail because your package PACKAGE depends on X...

2005-10-14 Thread Henning Makholm
Scripsit Peter Samuelson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The copyright notice says all rights reserved right before the
rest of the license spells out several rights which are, in fact,
 not reserved.

Those several rights are probably (I haven't read the full license)
granted only subject to certain conditions. It's not that farfetched
to imagine that you need to reserve the rights before you can release
them on conditions later.

But in fact All rights reserved is just legal boilerplate that has
no freedom-related consequences at all. It used to be (before the USA
joined the Berne treaty, iirc) that this particular language was a
formal necessity for asserting any copyright in the first place.
Lawyers stick to it because of the odd chance that its absence might
impress somebody to think, contrary to legal reality, that the work is
not properly copyrighted. Many lay programmers stick to it because
they don't know better. It is not harmful, so we generally ignore it.

Not having read the entire license, I will not comment on its freedom
in general. Go to -legal if interested.

Fantastic! Might I add that it is *not* a bug for an application to

Again, thank you. Attention to detail is quite important; in this case

No, you misunderstand. Bastian means that if some binary packages are only
built on some archs, not including the one the upload is taking place for,
nobody will get an override disparity warning[1]. And he's correct, as override
disparity warnings are only sent for sourceful uploads, and there is no
disparity if you don't upload the binary package in question.

Also, katie has overrides both for source packages and for binary packages.

[1] This is an exception, the vast majority of all source packages do not

installed but unconfigured, we can save this time because when B is
configured, it will run these executables, anyway, and doing this also
will pick up package A's files.

Sounds to me like package B should be performing these optimizations,
not package A.

Changes:
 dx (1:4.3.2-6) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * Added patches:
 + [10_64bit_pointer_fixes]
Do not store pointers in integer variables as it breaks on 64bit
platforms. This seems to happen in various places across the code.
Only a few of them are fixed so far, so #319769 is only addressed
in part. More to come in the future.
   * debian/control: Add libmagick9-dev as the preferred imagemagick
(build-)dependency to cater for soname bump.
   * debian/control: Package complies with version 3.6.2 of Debian policy.

 file (4.15-2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Add Build-Depends to python, although I really don’t see the point of the
python package (since file Build-Depended transitively on python2.3
anyway), which claims to be a dependency package only (closes: #333859)
   * Disabled EMF detection as it not only caused false positives, which might
have been acceptible, but a segmentation fault (closes: #333502)
   * Move the magic databases from /usr/share/misc/file to /usr/share/file;
this still violates the FHS in letter, but not in spirit; this is
different from the position in other distros (closes: #215139, #278478)

which provides the files from GNAT that are required for any ASIS
 application.
   * debian/asis.gpr: import gnatprj.gpr, for the same reason.
   * debian/rules (libasis-3.15p-1-dev): do not provide GNAT files in
/usr/share/ada/adainclude/asis anymore, they are now provided by
libgnatprj-dev. (was already done in -6, but not documented).

Closes: 319619 331809
Changes:
 dsdo (1.4.51-1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * New upstream release.
   * Adjust to newer aspell policy. Closes: bug#319619 (thanks to Martin
Leopold [EMAIL PROTECTED] for reporting, and to Ubuntu and Tollef
Fog Heen [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a patch).
   * Add debconf dependency fallback to debconf-2.0. Closes: bug#331809.
   * Update debian/rules only if DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS contains update.
   * Auto-update debian/rules (and manually strip bogus build-dependency
 on build-essential).
   * Update root Makefile patch:
+ Unsquelch also excluded words (they are unwanted by ispell but
   aspell wants some of them).
   * Update aspell-new Makefile patch (inspired by other packaging
 scripts by same upstream):
+ Bump up version (although seemingly unused).
 + Simplify main command.
 + Re-include some excluded words.
