There's almost no reason to have RC bugs that are open longer than a couple of weeks these days. So do you suggest that I should have let tetex 3.0 migrate to testing, even though there are still a couple of important issues with it, and even though it would have made half of the packages that depend on it in testing RC-buggy, either because they were uninstallable, or wouldn't work? No, that would be unsuitable for release. Which is a problem that should either be fixed quickly, or means you're trying to make a big enough change that you should be working out how to get it done without breaking other packages in a separate area, such as experimental. It's been in experimental for more than half a year. Some of the problems where fixed soon during this time, but most of it went undetected. We could have tried to install and use every depending, and build every build-depending package. But that is simply not feasible with the manpower, time and machine power that's available to the teTeX maintainers. So either we could have delayed teTeX 3.0 until god-knows-when, maybe until it's too late for etch, or force some part of the testing onto other maintainers. Much worse, there are a couple of cases where we had to NMU the packages, either because the maintainers where inactive, or in one case because he said no time here, just go ahead. Except for this one case this couldn't have been done with the packages in experimental, since failing to cooperate with a package in experimental isn't RC, is it? On the other hand, some bugs in add-on packages only revealed itself after other add-on packages had been fixed (because the latter one's bugs prevented the former's installation). Of course, in principle, we could have created our own compatible_with_teTeX-3.0 repository and uploaded fixed packages there, and do all the testing there. But then I don't understand what unstable is for... slightly non-standard, so presumably they're not the hold up. And heck, October's long enough ago that maybe there're new reasons to not add it to testing and the above's completely misleading now. Yes, the problem is that bugs in other packages keep popping up slowly. Like #341849 in debiandoc-sgml: We already had checked that debiandoc-sgml didn't have one of the usual incompatibility bugs, but then it turned out that there is still one, which is only triggered when a far-east document is typeset in a certain encoding. I really think that such things should be sorted out in unstable first, and only if the fixed packages are available should it migrate to testing. At least if testing serves any purpose. The purpose of testing isn't to make it okay to put broken packages in unstable. If the packages in unstable aren't broken; then it's appropriate to put them in testing. So yes, fine -- sort them out in unstable first, but do it *quickly*; ie over a matter of days or weeks, not months. You're welcome to offer me a permanent job where I can also do Debian work, or just a permanent job that leaves me more free time for Debian work, then I'll happily fix things within a couple of days or weeks. As it is, nobody in the teTeX team can do that. A year before sarge's release, we were at around 400 RC bugs in testing, and 600 in unstable; Err, that should read 3 months before everybody thought sarge would be released. today, a year before etch's release, we're at 600 RC bugs in testing, 1300 in unstable. Just looking at the testing count, that's a six month delay right there; looking at the unstable count, it's either something like a twelve month delay, or an indication huge chunks of unstable -- including packages like tetex -- won't make it into etch if we release on time. That would be bad, but I can't see how I can speed up tetex's evolution to be releasable by letting it rot in experimental. Regards, Frank -- Frank Küster Inst. f. Biochemie der Univ. Suggestions for vrms package?
Hi there, people. I'm currently one of the maintainers of the virtual Richard M. Stallman package (vrms), whose purpose is to indicate to the user which packages installed in his system are not Free Software. The package had active development up to 2002 and, then, it wasn't given so much attention. As a user of it, I thought that I could lend it a hand trying to fix some problems and doing some janitorial work on the Bug Tracking System (BTS) part of vrms. This resulted in some new life in the development of vrms [1] and a move to a team maintainership [2], with the source package being developed on Debian's Alioth server [3, 4]. So, I would like to ask you to, please, install it, use it, suggest what could be improved (preferrably reporting the bugs to the BTS) and tell us of any bugs that you encounter. For those not aware of it, you can report a bug against a package with the use of the nice reportbug program (in the reportbug package). I think that the package has huge ways to be improved and, as always, any help is welcome. I firmly believe that the Free Software applications that we have today are mature enough (and also sufficient) that we can drop most of the use of non-free packages. In the pursuit of this task, I think that vrms is an important assessment tool, so that the user knows how much non-free software his system has installed and which Free Software alternatives exist. Thank you very much for any help, Rogério Brito. I wasn't sure what to make of that -- maybe this request is too trivial to bother with, it's fine for the builds to fail, and I should just ignore it? Or maybe my e-mail wasn't received? Or maybe I misunderstood something and this was the wrong channel or the wrong thing to do? Right, well, as noted, it's generally a fairly low priority to get packages added to P-a-s -- even though it's an eventual goal, the waste just really isn't so much (in the usual case) to warrant a rush job. So from that standpoint, as long as there is quite such the backlog on P-a-s that there is (from what I can see), it seems like something maintainers should also give a pretty low priority to. Anyway, you could always try throwing this in Adam's direction as well now that he's listed as a co-maintainer of the file. Also any buildd admin can set the package to Not-For-Us status in wanna-build. That has the same effect as P-a-s except that it skews the stats. But it is a perfect temporary solution. Funny, I just did a Google search for site:www.debian.org cvs repository www.debian.org and there it was, plain as day. That implies that you already know/suspect it is in cvs. Ingo and I wanted to improve the (still non public) buildd.d.o scripts and were rejected with All the info is already there. That is why buildd.net now runs the scripts. The warning bells ring with buildd.d.o, not buildd.net. And yes, the buildd.net scripts are now closed sourced if you will. But the offer to open them up, to integrate them into and improve buildd.d.o was made long before that and still stands. See, what you keep missing is that, regardless of the willingness of the current buildd maintainers to work with you, you are using the openness or not of your work as a bargaining point. I have serious philosophical problems with that. Where did I ever say We must use this because it is free? Both buildd.d.o and buildd.net are in exactly the same state regarding openness: You have to ask the maintainer for the scripts personaly. Only difference is that Ryan never replied to my queries while Ingo did. But that is subjective I'm sure. Until such time as the proposed new infrastructure is *actually* free software, as opposed to a bargaining chip, I personally consider your objections invalid and completely support the decision of the buildd team. The buildd 'team' has decided nothing. The buildd.d.o admin did decide by himself. Even if the current software isn't publically available for whatever reason (personally, I'm putting my money on hacked into place over time and not particularly easy to massage into a form someone else could run, but who knows), if you want to make an argument that your stuff is better, you have to actually release it as free software as far as I'm concerned. It's the minimal bar to meet, and it's not even interesting to have a conversation with you about it until you meet that bar. My argument is that is has better functionality not better idiology. The graph scripts I did for buildd.net are all GPLed so if you get hold of them do whatever you like and the gpl permits with them. From my point there are totaly free, that they aren't published on the buildd.net webpages itself does not change that in my view. Now the problem is that main.cc works fine in one machine (sun4u, OS version 5.9, sparc, Ultra-60) but hangs in another machine running Debian Linux--the execution falls into infinite waiting at the first std::getline statement in main.cc. Could anyone suggest what the problem might be? The two programs are as follows: I bet the problem is buffering. You do flush the output so that end should not block. But the getline probably wants to read more than is available and then blocks. char *mycmd=./myProgram sicsin 2sicsout sicsout ; system(mycmd); You should use normal pipes here with fork/exec. Open a pair of pipes, fork, close the right in/out ends in the parent and child, exec the myProgram in the child. This might solve the deadlock as well. Hi, I see that the new make-kpkg creates a linux-image which now goes along with the debian names that moved from kernel-image to linux-image. Cool. One thing is that I do a lot, is to test linux-2.6-git, and making different kernel names for the kernels is really a pain, even I would have to edit grub or have a zillion of grub entries. What I do is I build make-kpkg --revision=PC.v1.bla kernel_image. If some data structure, be it a file system or an HTML-like tag soup, doesn't conform to the specification, the processors (fs driber or web browser) behavoiur will be implementation dependant... Russ Allbery wrote: Assuming that what you say above is correct and FFMPEG is the only issue (and I have no reason to doubt you), And if it's not, it would be really nice if the ftpmasters let someone know. I agree that xvidcap and ffmpeg should be treated the same. However, that is not evidence that xvidcap should be in Debian -- it's evidence that they should be treated the same. Perhaps the correct thing to do is file an RC bug on ffmpeg and get it removed from the archives. I don't know. Correct. When one doesn't know, the right thing to do is frequently both not make the problem worse and not overreact, meaning leaving ffmpeg in the archive and xvidcap in NEW until the situation is clearly understood and resolved is quite reasonable. Of course, we do need to eventually actually get the situation resolved and come to a conclusion, after which either both should be in the archive or neither should. But the current situation of having one in the archive and one not during a hazy patent/license issue is *not* evidence of someone doing a bad job. It is evidence of an incomplete job, which I think everyone, including the ftp-masters, would agree with. Certainly. Well put. Of course, leaving the job incomplete for this long without any visible signs of progress may be evidence of a job not done. But what *is* evidence of a bad job is that there is one obvious improvement on the current situation which could have been made at any time without making matters any worse. Specifically, xvidcap can be packaged without the ffmpeg code, and if the ftpmasters requested that, I am sure that Javier would be happy to do that as an interim measure until this is sorted out. If the ffmpeg code is the only issue, then it should *not* be delaying xvidcap. If it isn't, then Javier should be told. -- Nathanael Nerode [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Instead, we front-load the flamewars and grudges in the interest of efficiency.) --Steve Lanagasek, http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/09/msg01056.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. debian-menu vs. .desktop
Thomas Viehmann wrote: P.S.: Could someone give me a pointer about moving to .desktop and why it is/was considered a bad idea? (Or if it's just a not worth it/noone has time issue...) I believe it was considered a good idea by everyone and the consensus was that it should be done in the long run. I believe the first hurdle was that a translation scheme had to be provided to convert the rather rich .desktop format to the window manager formats for all the legacy window managers, and to arrange for them to be automatically updated; this is already done for Debian's menu format. This would presumably involve some serious hacking on the menu package. I believe the second hurdle was that it was felt that a translation scheme from Debian's menu format to the .desktop format was needed so that not all Debian packages had to switch to .desktop format at once. I believe nobody has had the time or energy to clear the first hurdle, let alone the second. Someone can tell me if I'm wrong. :-) In addition, the last time this issue was brought up, the .desktop format hadn't actually been standardized and wasn't being used by KDE or Gnome really, so it didn't seem worth it at the time; it seems a lot more worth it now. It seems burdenful for maintainers to provide both and they're not always well synced (I noticed that emacs21's .desktop comment used as hint in the Gnome menu was meaningful whereas the menu file lacked a longtitle that is used as hint in the Debian menu.) -- Nathanael Nerode [EMAIL PROTECTED] This space intentionally left blank. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. If you do not believe me, read the drafts linked by Thomas. Beside that would create a lot of confusion: Window managers are not supposed to read Debian menu files directly, but to read files _generated_ by menu. This files are generated according the menu configuration which is applied consistently to all the window managers menus. menu is very flexible, much more than XDG menus, ask the custom Debian distributions. If menu were to use .desktop file, then : 1) window managers would not be allowed to read them directly. 2) upstream .desktop would not be suitable for Debian menu because they would not follow the Debian menu policy. Debian Installer team monthly meeting minutes (20051214 meeting)
(reply-to: debian-boot) The eigth Debian Installer team meeting was held from 21:00UTC to 22:24UTC on Wednesday December 14th 2005. There were about 80 people connected to the channel during the meeting and 17 of them spoke during the meeting at least once. The full log of the meeting is available at http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/irc-meeting-20051214/log Beta2 plans --- Most of the meeting discussions were directed at plans for a D-I Etch beta2 release. Graphical installer (G-I) - Most activities regarding G-I have recently been focused on fonts handling. Most needed fonts for non Latin languages are in the process of being identified. Davide Viti coordinates this work on a Wiki page (http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstallerGUIFonts). Two work directions are being explored simultaneously: -font reduction to remove glyphs which could conflict with glyphs provided by other more specialized (and nicer) fonts -font prioritization so that, depending on the language, specialized fonts have some priority over others It is agreed that releasing the g-i daily images with the current font status is a good way to expose this work to discussion. Finding the Good Fonts is still work in progress: -Arabic done -Hebrew OK -Korean probably OK -Japanese and Chinese on their way and converging to an acceptable solution -Cyrillic would be OK with DejaVuSans but probably a newer version which requires a newer fontforge -Indic still needs work, we need more input from debian-in people In general, we still need to sollicitate input especially for non Latin languages. Releasing G-I daily images with the current font status will be a good way to do so. Include G-I in the D-I beta2 release? - The main blocker which actually prevents an official release of G-I is the udeb dependency issue which currently prevents g-i images to be rebuildable without having udebs in localudebs/ So, a decision to include G-I as a full component of beta2 is very likely to delay beta2 too much in case issues currently blocking beta2 are quickly solved (see below). The current decision is to release G-I as an Alpha version aside from beta2, maybe this time with (netinst) CD images. G-I meeting in Estremadura -- The G-I contributors will try to hold a work meeting inside the Estremadura meetings proposed recently (http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/12/msg3.html). A date in a very near future would be most appropriate. Davide Viti volunteered to try arranging this: find who would come and get in touch with both Andreas Schuldei and the local organisers. The January 18-22 timeslot seems the best, but is very short notice. Beta2 release plans --- Several subtopics were discussed about beta2 release: Kernel issues - First of all, if we want beta2 to have an updated kernel (and we do), we need at least 2.6.14 in testing. Then issues with initrd generators have to be solved. 2.6.14 still has a few RC bugs and yaird and initramfs-tools have problems with quite a few configurations. 2.6.14 has been decided to default with yaird by the kernel team so we should focus on this (unless we want to skip it... which will certainly delay beta2). 2.6.15 will default to initramfs-tools. D-I's base-installer already has support for initramfs-tools and is prefered slightly because it has less dependencies. These issues MUST be the main focus of D-I contributors starting from now. Stopping any other risky change has been decided. The general discussion showed ... that more discussion is needed. The first decision seems to be: 2.6.14 or 2.6.15? 2.6.15 is to be released in the next two weeks, according to Maximilian Attems. This decision is primarily for the kernel team to take; d-i can but follow. Network interfaces - Discover/udev -- These two topics were unrelated in the agenda but have proven to be related. It is currently very likely that systems with two network interfaces will end up with both switched on the installed system after the reboot. This is of course a blocker. The discussion showed that sticking with discover while udev is used may be the main reason for this. An agreement to try abandoning discover has been reached (we can revert this is it breaks too much stuff). This is very likely to break some parts of D-I on some architectures, but the general feeling is that keeping discover will add hacks over hacks. The D-I team will certainly need some external help (Colin Watson suggested brining Scott James Remnant on the topic as he maintains Ubuntu's udev) as well as closer work with Marco d'Itri who maintains udev in Debian. A lot of more detailed issues about this topic can be seen in the meeting log. New busybox --- An update of busybox for a few issues is needed (umount -a fix, readlink -f patch). Syncing with upstream
Packaging swftools for Debian
Hi, I just joined the list, so I'm sorry if this a FAQ or has been recently discussed. I was wondering, if anybody has been working on getting swftools (http://www.swftools.org/) into Debian? There seems to be an old RFP http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=187275 which has been closed because of inactivity. Does anybody know what is the status with that? Are there any obvious reasons why swftools can't/shouldn't be packaged for Debian? Simo -- :r ~/.signature signature.asc Description: Digital signature
