simple g++-3.0 problem

2001-04-27 Thread Dale E Martin
Hi, I'm using the prerelease g++-3.0 for some testing. I've got a weird
compilation problem that I don't understand at all, and I was wondering if
anyone could shed any insight on it.

This program:

// Begin c++ program

#include string
#include iostream.h

class foo {
public:
  foo(){}
  ~foo(){}

  string getString(){
return harhar;
  }
};

int
main( int argc, char *argv[] ){
  foo *myFoo = new foo();
  cout  myFoo-getString()  endl;
}

// End c++ program

does not compile with g++-3.0 - I get the following error:
~/test/c++ g++-3.0 simple-problem-g++3.cpp -o simple-problem-g++3
simple-problem-g++3.cpp:9: parse error before `)' token
simple-problem-g++3.cpp:12: parse error before `}' token
simple-problem-g++3.cpp: In function `int main(int, char**)':
simple-problem-g++3.cpp:17: no matching function for call to
`foo::getString()'

Basically, it doesn't like the declaration string getString()...
g++-2.95.4 doesn't seem to mind this code, and I can't for the life of me
figuer out why it would be broken.

I know this is a prerelease, so maybe that's the problem... Just looking
for ideas. Please Cc me, as I'm not currently subscribed to this list.

Thanks,
Dale

Re: simple g++-3.0 problem

2001-04-27 Thread Dale E Martin
   g++ 3.0 handled the std namespace incorrectly and let you get away
 with this. g++ 3.0 requires that you either declare using std or explicitly
 say std::string getString().

Not looking forward to fixing this in all my own code,

I knew it had to be something silly like this, thanks. This code works as
expected:

// begin

#include string
#include iostream.h

using namespace std;

class foo {
public:
  foo(){}
  ~foo(){}

  string getString(){
return harhar;
  }
};

int
main( int argc, char *argv[] ){
  foo *myFoo = new foo();
  cout  myFoo-getString()  endl;
}

// end

Thanks,
Dale

Re: Bug#71237: cdparanoia: cannot use cdparanoia 'out of the box' as a non-root user.

2000-09-12 Thread Dale E. Martin
 The problem I have here is that the 'appropriate device' is not guarenteed
 to stay constant with respect to the SCSI bus and ID, the way IDE devices
 are for example. On my system (I believe this is actually the default)
 scd devices are group audio, perm 0660, and my cdripper account is in the
 audio group.

 Currently, I have two hard drives and two cdrom drives in this machine.
 The hard drives are at IDs 0 and 1, and the cdrom drives are at IDs 5 and
 6.

 ID:   generic:
 0 sg0
 1 sg1
 5 sg2
 6 sg3

 Now I want to connect an external hard drive to my machine, so I have more
 storage space for my music collection. I set this drive to ID 3.

 ID:   generic:
 0 sg0
 1 sg1
 3 sg2
 5 sg3
 6 sg4

 Notice that now my external hard drive has access by audio group through
 the generic device, and my second cdrom drive is no longer accessable by
 the audio group.

 Basically, cdparanoia and the installer scripts cannot depend on a fixed
 mapping between the scd device and the sg device.

I think that's even more of an argument for not having automated lookups
occuring. I.e. you want to know what you're doing to be accessing raw
SCSI devices. That's simply my opinion of course...

I can see how you arrived at the solution that you did now though. So
far, you're the only person that's sent me email advocating SUID root.
Would documenting that as a solution, and describing how to do it in
Readme.Debian, along with the other approaches/problems be sufficient in
your opinion?

 On the other hand, I believe this will be a moot point under devfs.

I brought this up once on debian devel. A lot of people are very
anti-devfs. I still haven't ever played with it and have no opinion of
my own on it.

Later,
Dale

Re: Bug#71237: cdparanoia: cannot use cdparanoia 'out of the box' as a non-root user.

2000-09-11 Thread Dale E. Martin
 Basically, cdparanoia requires use of 'scsi-generic' (/dev/sg*) when
 reading from SCSI cdrom drives. /dev/sg device nodes are created with
 root.root ownership and mode 0600.

Which is correct - you definitely want tight access on your devices.

 As relaxing permissions in general on /dev/sg* would create more of a
 potential security risk for SCSI-based systems, and there is no
 constant mapping between [/dev/scd*] and [/dev/sg*], cdparanoia should
 be made suid root and should drop root privelages after determining
 which /dev/sg* device to use and opening said device. Such checking
 should also be made after a permission check of the /dev/scd* device.

I'm not sure I agree with your solution. cdparanoia runs fine (AFAIK)
if you go set the permissions on the appropriate device correctly.
The basic solution that I've used on my own systems is to change the
ownership of the appropriate sg* and scd* devices to the audio group,
set the permissions to 0660, and then added myself (and anyone else
needing access on shared machines) to the audio group.

Granted, this isn't so simple for newbie users but it works without
running cdparanoia suid root, which would generally be considered a Bad
Thing. Perhaps the right answer is a post install that figures out the
devices to use (via cdparanoia itself) and then asks who needs to be
able to run it. That would be more work then I currently have time for,
but I would entertain any solution that was offered.

 ii libcdparanoia0 3a9.7-2 Shared libraries for cdparanoia
 (runtime lib)

I will be updating the package this week as I've received several bug
reports, including one about source dependencies and a couple that I've
been putting off for some time. I'll be putting some info in
Readme.Debian about IDE/SCSI emulation, and I'll also note the solution
that I've suggested here.

Comments welcome. I'm not subscribed to debian-devel so please Cc me on
any replies.

Thanks,
Dale

 In my opinion, this problem is not sufficient to warrant an upload at
 this time since, contrary to the bug reporters claim, it does not
 prevent the packing from functioning. It is annoying, yes.

Interesting that it works for you. It really doesn't for me:
~ java
Warning: can't find /usr/lib/jdk1.1/bin/../bin/checkVersions, hope that's ok
java was not found in /usr/lib/jdk1.1/bin/../bin/i686/green_threads/java

The binary is somehow actually missing, and I've not done anything weird as
far as I know. The other folks who are saying is doesn't work have the
same problem. I _know_ the checkversions thing is another problem.

 Will users upgrading from Hamm to Slink suffer from the same problems? If so,

FWIW, I've been running slink for months (and months!) and upgrading solely
with apt, and this just bit me recently. So, it _could_ effect upgraders,
I would imagine.

 Why's that? I'm using the one from slink with 2.2.0 and it works just fine.
 I've been running 2.2.0-pre6 for a couple of weeks and just upgraded to
 2.2.0 last night.

I needed it to initialize a 256M swap partition. The old version of mkswap
refused to do it.

 Actually I have to say, if I would have been the one who was supposed to fix
 the
 bug, it would have taken me another hundred days, and probably I would have
 lost
 my last hair upon this ...

 But luckily, the upstream maintainer found the problem, which was related to
 the
 egcs c++ compiler.

 On another point, there is no other distribution which is featuring idraw,
 drawtool,
 flipbook and the InterViews library together with all the vector drawing
 libraries and Unidraw within ivtools.
 Just dropping that package because it was (temporarily) not possible to
 draw arrows seemed not appropriate to me ..

Thanks for chasing this bug down. I realize that idraw is ancient and
probably old news, but I _do_ use it frequently as I like that it
generates/reads(its own subset of) postscript. Arrows seem to be in most
anything that I want to draw, so that was limiting its usefulness to me
significantly. :-)

I'd say it's grave too - despite being non-free, this _is_ the only decent

I'm a concerned about slink. specifically jdk1.1, idraw, and xaw-wrappers

1999-01-21 Thread Dale E. Martin

I'm not trying to be too negative or anything, but I've been having kind of
a bad day with Slink and I'm wondering if I'm the only one? Today I've
been trying to draw some stuff, and here's the path I've gone down.

I tried to use TogetherJ, written in Java. But jdk1.1 is completely hosed
and the jvm won't even run, so I abandoned that fairly quickly. There's a
bug report about it but no indication if it's being worked on or not. No
new package on master or anything.

Then I tried to use idraw, which I've used in the past a _bunch_ of times.
It keeps segmentation faulting on me, and so I went to look at
bugs.debian.org and the bug report about this is over 100 days old.

So, then I tried to use xfig. It kept crashing immediately. So I again
went to bugs.debian.org and it has a bug (only 7 days old this time)
explaining the problem (I _was_ using nextaw) and how to work around
it. For the life of me, xaw-wrappers won't work. Even for stuff I didn't
set up. For instance, if I run xkeycaps (which uses xaw-wrappers on its
own) with XAW_WRAPPERS_DEBUG set to 1, I get:

~ xkeycaps
libc version: 6
LD_LIBRARY_PATH:
/usr/X11R6/lib/neXtaw:/usr/local/lib:/usr/X11R6/lib:/usr/lib/jdk1.1/lib/i586/green_threads

But, from the configuration, it looks to me like it's not _supposed_ to use
neXtaw, am I right? With it first in LD_LIBRARY_PATH it's going to, and if
I have nextaw installed, indeed it crashes on me.

What's up with this stuff? Are we really about to release a system that is
this unstable? I've been using Debian since 0.93 or something like that
and I've not ever had this many problems. I realize we're all volunteers
and all of that, so if the answer is that it's just not ready, let's not
pretend we're about to release.

Also, should I increase the severity of the bugs filed against these
packages? Normally I wouldn't as it seems kind of rude to me, but I
_don't_ think they should ship as is.

Thanks for any input.
Dale

How can tell what priority a bug is?

1998-10-09 Thread Dale E. Martin

I maintain cdparanoia, which has bug #23236 filed against it. This is an
alpha version of the software, and the bug is that a feature isn't yet
implemented. I don't want this to keep this package out of the new
release, as its base functionality works extremely well.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious!

Thanks,
Dale
