You can force them to be the ones who file suit. They file a DMCA
notice with the hoster, who takes the item down and notifies you. This
places the hoster in the "safe harbor". You can then file a
counter-notice asserting that the item does not infringe and they can
then put it back up and remain in the safe harbor. The complainant then
has 30 days to file suit against you (not the hoster) and get her to
issue an order to the hoster to take the item down. If they fail to
file suit within 30 days they are SOL.

Of course, you do have to be prepared to defend if they do file suit and
pay damages if you lose, but that would be the case in the absence of
the DMCA safe harbor provision except that the hoster would be on the
hook as well. You and the hoster would learn about the suit when the
summons arrived. With the DMCA safe harbor provision the hoster is held
harmless as long as they follow the rules, and there is a well-defined
notice procedure which the complainant must follow.

It is limited to the people who actually do the work. Why should the
fact that you chose to download, install, and use some software that
someone wrote and generously made available to you for free give you any
right to participate in their decisions as to what to do next.

I'm not happy with some of the choices Debian has made recently but my

Upstream should (a) think hard about whether this is really necessary
 (b) ask on info-gnu.

I assume that he did both, but I have no control over that. In any

Yes, such change need to be done very carefully and in stages, to
avoid dependency loops. See #542602 for a discussion on the ntp order

After some research I'm tending to think that many (if not most) of the
scripts that require $time, shouldn't (or at least should only require
hwclockfirst). I also don't see that we still need two hwclock scripts.
Then ntp, chrony, and hwclock could provide $time and only those
packages that really need exact time should require it. If the clock
gets stepped at bootup that fact will be quite obvious in the logs so
$syslog should be able live with the rare stepping.

I think I'll have chrony require hwclockfirst and add X-Start-Befores
for packages such as dovecot that stepping might break (so if you know
of such a package tell me).

Stepping the clock during boot

2010-08-02 Thread John Hasler
Would it be unacceptable for Chrony to step the clock (particularly
back) during boot? This would only happen when the clock was at least
30 seconds off but I'm concerned that it might screw some of the daemons

would have to slew it (which can take hours for large errors) or give
up. This would only happen on rare occasions.

Of course, but that is very hard to ascertain with dependency-based

suppose I could put in a bunch of X-Start-Before lines, but I'd have
to know what all could be adversely affected and booting would be
slowed.

chrony - Sets your computer's clock from time servers on the Net
Closes: 287060 348412 504000
Changes:
 chrony (1.23-4) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Fixed dependency of init script on Pppconfig ip-up.d script by moving
those lines into the init script.
 .
   * Added checks to try to make sure that Chronyd is really, really running.
Changed Netstat call to use -n, added code to kill it if it hangs.
Added code to kill Chronyc if it can't contact Chronyd.
Discussed the HPET/rtc problem in NEWS.Debian.
 .
Closes: #504000: init script hangs for a while might break upgrade
 .
   * Added missing initialization to create_instance() in ntp_core.c.
This was why UTI_NormaliseTimeval() was being called with huge
 values at times.

bugs reopen #348412 with a patch.

Closes: #348412: chronyc not LP64 compliant
 .
   * Added comment about sources being discarded to chrony.conf as suggested
 by Andreas Hübner in #268289.
 .
   * This is normal behavior.

I had at least a couple of boxes in the past where grub were problematic

When I installed Lenny on this AMD64 box (ASUS A8V-XE) a few weeks ago Grub
was unable to boot it. I had to go back and reinstall, selecting Lilo.

None. If the process exits it exits. It doesn't matter how quickly it is

   * Rewrote UTI_NormaliseTimeval()in util.c to use divide/remainder
instead of loops at the suggestion of Gabor Gombas. This prevents the
problem of the loop running until the sun goes out when the function
is called with a very large value for tv_usec on 64-bit architectures.
Also fixed some other spots where the same loop was being used.

RFH: Chrony goes into endless loop on x86_64

2008-04-22 Thread John Hasler
See bug #474294.

If you have an x86_64 system you can help by

 a) installing chrony-1.21 from Stable or Unstable and confirming the bug

or

 b) installing chrony-1.23 from Experimental and determining if the new
upstream release has fixed it.

You could also look at the bug report and the source and help me find the
problem. I've had no response from upstream.

To put it in perspective, Michigan is at the same latitude as northern

Michigan extends from about 42N to about 48N: about from Rome to Munich.

Most of Canadians live south of the latitude of London, UK.

A fact which caused considerable consternation among early North American

If it was written by a US government employee on government time it is not

Then the *source* packages can legitimately use the same Maintainer: field.

If they are also compiled with a toolchain unchanged from Debian, the
 binaries
can legitimately have the same Maintainer: field as in Debian, because they
 are essentially the same package.

If not, the binary packages should have different Maintainer: fields

Personally, I have no objection to the Maintainer field remaining unchanged
when the source package is unchanged.

For instance, debugging bugs in your package generated by a toolchain you
don't have is obnoxious, frustrating, and a waste of time...

If building one of my packages with a well-chosen toolchain fails or
produces a buggy binary there is probably something wrong with it that will
eventually bite me and I'd like to know about it (in the form of a wishlist
bug).

Ubuntu should be sorting out whether such problems are present in Debian
before sending them to the Debian maintainer.

Ubuntu should certainly first try to make sure the problem is not theirs.

Re: Need for launchpad

2006-01-13 Thread John Hasler
Thomas Hood writes:
If they were submitted to the BTS then that would just create more work
for the Debian maintainer as well as for the Ubuntu maintainer, since the
former would have to tag the report and ensure it gets closed on the next
 upload, etc.

That's exactly how I want to handle my packages. If I ever get around to
looking at the Ubuntu stuff and find anything relevant (I don't know if
they use any of my packages) I'll just put them in the BTS myself anyway.

However, to perform this breakdown would be for Ubuntu developers to make
judgments about what is suitable for Debian, and I am sure that such
judgments would provoke negative reactions from Debian developers.

Why? Don't we expect users to decide which of their local changes are
suitable for Debian? I sometimes make local changes to Debian packages.
Sometimes I send patches to the BTS and sometimes I decide that the change
is only relevant to my local situation. Should I instead put them all up
on a Web site and expect the maintainers to sort through them?

I think of Ubuntu as just another (large) user. If they don't feel like
filing bugs that's fine: it costs me nothing for them to use my work (if
they indeed do). However, I can't see how putting up patches on a Web site
is better than (or even as good as) filing bug reports.

So I think that it is up to Debian maintainers to review the Ubuntu
patches from time to time and to backport what appears to be suitable for
 Debian.

Again, why should Ubuntu's patches be handled any differently than those of
other users?

I agree that it would be nice if Ubuntu developers tried to get their
changes into sid. It is certainly not their responsibility to do so, but
in my experience Ubuntu developers have been very cooperative when they
have been approached. So I don't see a big problem.

I don't either. After all, most users don't file bug reports, and Ubuntu
is (in my view), a user. It would be nice to have their feedback since it
is likely to be useful and of high quality, but we can live without it.

Re: Intel notebooks for needy developers in developing countries

2005-12-11 Thread John Hasler
Daniel writes:
Why should it be illegal to re-sell or outreach a piece of US hardware,
which is already imported into a free country, into another free country?

It would be illegal for Intel to send the hardware to someone it knows is
going to send it somewhere that it would be illegal for Intel to send it
directly. Otherwise the controls would be even more pointless.

However, it's not imported yet for breaking onces head about it anyway.

We don't even know that the subject hardware would be subject to export
controls. There's really no reason for us to concern ourselves about it.

BTW the US is not the only country with such laws.

2005-12-10 Thread John Hasler
Daniel Baumann writes:
Why then being so complicated? If there is a candidate in a country
doomed by US export laws, 'export' the notebook first to someone other
and ship if afterwards to Cuba.

This would still violate the export law. Otherwise the law would be even
more pointless than it already is.

I don't see why we need to concern ourselves about it, though. Intel has
lawyers. If they have to disqualify some candidates for legal reasons they
can do so without our help.

Looks fine to me. Is it going to be retroactive?

Does the installer mention popcon?

What's wrong with preserving the entire notice?

But in fact All rights reserved is just legal boilerplate that has no
freedom-related consequences at all. It used to be (before the USA joined
the Berne treaty, iirc) that this particular language was a formal
necessity for asserting any copyright in the first place.

It was never even required in the US. There once was some sort of a
pan-American copyright treaty and the phrase was required by some member
countries.

Thats the reason why I give more helpfull information too in the first
 mail.

You haven't given enough information.

But why changing localhost to localhost.localdomain...

It wasn't changed. localhost.localdomain was _added_. localhost is
still there.

There was everythink OK with the proven localhost-entry. No problemes
 was encounted with it.

There were problems that the addition of localhost.localdomain were
intended to solve. You may not have personally experienced them but many
others did.

It is absolutely irrelevant if the problemes are exactely specified or
 not.

If the addition of localhost.localdomain caused you a problem we need to
know exactly what it was so that we can fix it.

The first entry is the canonical name, and it is what the reverse maps
to. So yes, it WAS changed, and very much so.

The OP seemed to me to be implying that localhost had been deleted and
replaced by localhost.localdomain.

Now, that is interesting. Which problems? I honestly don't know of any.

Read the discussion in the bug report. I think localhost.localdomain is
ugly, but adding it seems much more feasible than fixing all the broken
software.

No, they won't, because INN ignores hostnames that do not contain a
period for the purposes of generating external identifiers, specifically
to keep from using things like localhost or other unqualified names that
 aren't globally unique.

Relying on hostnames either with or without periods for uniqueness is both
broken and unnecessary.

IMHO is too much to inhibit the use of the program as a whole just to
minimize the collision risk, a warning would have been enough.

Particularly considering that there are better ways to assure the
uniqueness of message-ids anyway.
