This is exactly what I'm looking for...
Of course, this feature is available this version of Debian, Sarge...
only
in the Gnome desktop manager and NOT the KDE desktop manager (KDE 3.3.2)...
I don't understand what you mean by ...once you
change Login Manager (kdm) settings, don't forget to restart kdm (killing
X with ctrl+alt+backspace or loging off login on is not enough!
I didn't have kdm loaded on this computer... I just went to a console
and
typed apt-get install kdm and when it loaded it asked me what manager I'd
like as the default... I selected kdm and it's been working great ever
since... so, what you said confuses me somewhat??? could you please explain
that a little better so that I can be certain that I'm not missing
something???
Thanks...

I've used kcontrol and went to the convience tab and
there is no option to allow a user to be automatically logged
on after x secs... this does not do what I need... as gdm did...
 Such configuration should be enough:

Btw, I think, this feature is very new. It was added sometime post kde
3.5.0 (in minor point releases). So it's definitely not available on
sarge, only on etch sid. I've tested it and it works perfectly. Just
once you change Login Manager (kdm) settings, don't forget to restart
kdm (killing X with ctrl+alt+backspace or loging off login on is not
 enough!) with

 # invoke-rc.d kdm restart
 in linux virtual terminal console
 -- OR --
 simply restart your computer

Yes, the feature is not available in sarge. But you can always upgrade to
testing, which will become 'stable' very soon. Beware, that currently kde in
etch has an annoying (kcontrol empty) bug which can be resolved by upgrading
a few kde packages from unstable.

What I mean is that when you change the kdm setting in control center, you
must restart kdm for changes to take effect.

kcontrol (as user, automatically switches to root with kdesu)

No pain involved.

KDE... however, gdm had a very nice feature... I could set it to
automatically logon a specific user after a certain period of time, say

System Settings - System Administration - Login Manager

Look on the Convenience tab for the auto login options.

I've never used this.

Thank you...
yes...
as I said in the first post... I've tried that... , it is a solution to
logon a user by default... however it does not offer an option for
timing...
it is immediate... you select this and that person get logged on, and
that's that... lol...
Thanks...
