Maybe I forgot something, but it should be as easy as this:

1) generate locales (dpkg-reconfigure locales)
2) change your $LANG, etc.
3) convert your filenames (convmv is the king here) and the contents of them

my locales look like this:

LANGUAGE=de_DE:de:en_GB:en
LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=de_DE.UTF-8
LC_TIME=de_DE.UTF-8

I know convmv, but I did not know isoconv, I will try it.

But one problem remains. If I open a new file in lets say kate this is encoded
an iso-8559-1. Do I have to switch for every single new file manualy to utf8,
do I have to set it for every single app which is able to edit text or is
there an cental way to tell all apps to use utf8?

Did you relogin? On the top-right of the file-open dialog, there is the
charset field, pretty much hidden. If you run in an UTF-8 locale, this will
default to utf-8.

You need to use a font that has good unicode support. Qt3 doesn't do font
substitution, which means that if the used font doesn't have the symbol it
shows a box instead.

 You need to use a font that has good unicode support.

For example Times or Standard Symbols L. Just Have a look at the
fonts setting section of konqueror and try them (with you site loaded).

Or you can get a list of utf-8 supporting fonts with
$ xlsfonts -ll | grep -i iso10646 | less

qt3 does not characthers substitutions. konqueror is built on qt3,

If you have Debian you can install the ttf-freefont package and use the
Free Sans font or the ttf-junicode or ttf-gentium packages (the latter
two are Serif fonts that may not look as good for onscreen use).

If you have access to a Windows XP box you may be able to copy the Arial
Unicode MS fonts over to your Linux box and install them with a font
installer.

I would tend to use the Free Sans font but it isn't complete enough like
the others mentioned here (though it will display the above page
without a problem). It's too bad the Arial Unicode MS font isn't
available from outside Windows since it is one of the most complete and
reasonable looking fonts around.

Yes, but the MS Corefonts do not include Arial Unicode MS - only regular
Arial, which doesn't include all the extra characters that the Unicode
version has (the Unicode version is some 22MB; the others not more than
1 or 2).

Re: UTF8 an KDE in debian sid?

2004-09-28 Thread Jan-Hendrik Palic
Hi ...

I played around with ~/.kde/env to solve my locale-utf8-kde3.3 problem.

my situation is, that I have locale.sh in ~/.kde/env with the following
content:

$cat .kde/env/locale.sh
export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
export LC_CTYPE=de_DE.UTF-8
export LC_ALL=de_DE.UTF-8
export LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.UTF-8

The result is, that I have German-Umlauts in uxterm but not in KDE
itsself.

I changed my locale-gen to
$cat /etc/locale.gen
de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8
[EMAIL PROTECTED] UTF-8
en_GB.UTF-8 UTF-8

and have following in ~/.profile
[EMAIL PROTECTED]; export LANG
[EMAIL PROTECTED]; export LC_ALL
LC_CTYPE=[EMAIL PROTECTED] ; export LC_CTYPE
LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.UTF-8 ; export LC_MESSAGES

The result is, that I do not have utf8 support in KDE-apps, if they will
start from uxterm at all. I played around with gdm and kdm and startet
my KDE-session manually, but this doesn't help.

Any suggestions?

 Regards

Jan

Those settings are non-sense:
LC_ALL overwrites LC_MESSAGES
LC_CTYPE is already defined by LANG
LC_COLLATE better be C

Thus:
export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
export LC_COLLATE=C
export LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.UTF-8

Verify those values with locale. If you have a @euro locale, you should use
it (defines correct currency).
Maybe leave LC_MESSAGES undefined for testing and see if that enables the
german umlauts.
