Currently, initramfs only does this if something thinks it should. Ie, open-iscsi might do it, or some other things might call 'configure_networking'. But it seems reasonable that if the user put 'ip=' on the cmdline then they wanted that to happen in initramfs. One possible fallout is that currently calling configure_networking multiple times will try multiple times if unsuccessful, which could lead to longer timeouts if we added this behavior and it was called multiple times. Additionally, one feature i'd like to have (admittedly for debug purposes) is the ability to write the /run/initramfs/open-iscsi.interface file that is used at least by open-iscsi to say "do not bring this interface down". generically, it seems like it'd be nice to have a way to have the same functionality that open-iscsi.interface accomplishes but not tied to open-iscsi. Ie, the user may for any reason want to keep a network from getting re-configured by normal OS bringup. -- Package-specific info: -- initramfs sizes -- /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.19.0-20-generic root=UUID=715c6da7-c111-4842-868b-7778623ead7c ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 -- /proc/filesystems ext3 ext2 ext4 vfat fuseblk -- lsmod Module Size Used by overlay45056 0 xt_CHECKSUM16384 1 iptable_mangle 16384 1 ipt_MASQUERADE 16384 1 nf_nat_masquerade_ipv416384 1 ipt_MASQUERADE iptable_nat16384 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 16384 1 nf_defrag_ipv4 16384 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_nat_ipv416384 1 iptable_nat nf_nat 28672 2 nf_nat_ipv4,nf_nat_masquerade_ipv4 nf_conntrack 106496 4 nf_nat,nf_nat_ipv4,nf_nat_masquerade_ipv4,nf_conntrack_ipv4 xt_tcpudp 16384 5 bridge110592 0 stp16384 1 bridge llc16384 2 stp,bridge iptable_filter 16384 1 ip_tables 28672 3 iptable_filter,iptable_mangle,iptable_nat x_tables 36864 6 xt_CHECKSUM,ip_tables,xt_tcpudp,ipt_MASQUERADE,iptable_filter,iptable_mangle rfcomm 69632 8 bnep 20480 2 dm_crypt 24576 1 dm_multipath 24576 0 scsi_dh16384 1 dm_multipath snd_seq_midi 16384 0 snd_seq_midi_event 16384 1 snd_seq_midi coretemp 16384 0 snd_hda_codec_conexant24576 1 snd_hda_codec_generic69632 1 snd_hda_codec_conexant snd_rawmidi32768 1 snd_seq_midi pcmcia 65536 0 arc4 16384 2 snd_seq69632 2 snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq_midi joydev 20480 0 serio_raw 16384 0 iwldvm237568 0 r852 20480 0 sm_common 20480 1 r852 snd_hda_intel 32768 3 nand 69632 2 r852,sm_common snd_hda_controller 32768 1 snd_hda_intel mac80211 724992 1 iwldvm thinkpad_acpi 86016 0 nand_ecc 16384 1 nand nvram 16384 1 thinkpad_acpi snd_hda_codec 143360 4 snd_hda_codec_conexant,snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_controller snd_hwdep 20480 1 snd_hda_codec nand_bch 16384 1 nand bch20480 1 nand_bch uvcvideo 90112 0 nand_ids 16384 1 nand videobuf2_vmalloc 16384 1 uvcvideo mtd61440 2 nand,sm_common lpc_ich24576 0 yenta_socket 49152 0 videobuf2_memops 16384 1 videobuf2_vmalloc r592 20480 0 snd_pcm 106496 3 snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_controller iwlwifi 196608 1 iwldvm memstick 20480 1 r592 vide

Such behavior breaks the installation of kdump-tools with zfs as rootfs because it explictly generates a new initrd with MODULES=dep. Attached patch makes dep_add_modules_mount() return upon detecting a zfs rootfs. Because users who run zfs as rootfs are required to install zfs-initramfs package, where a lot more details are handled, there is no potential breakage for not handling zfs related kernel modules here. This is due to missing modules. The original bug is at https://bugs.kali.org/view.php?id=7846, and I'll quote the bits that are relevant: > Because Generation 2 virtual machines in Hyper-V are presented with a > minimal set of EFI hardware, the kernel module "hyperv_keyboard" must > be present to interact with the console keyboard. On systems with disk > encryption, the user will be prompted for the key to decrypt the disk, > but cannot enter the password because no keyboard driver is present. > > [...] > > This module *is* present when the grub menu is presented and later > when the kernel is fully loaded. FYI, if some mechanism requires a > mouse or touch, the hid_hyperv module will also be needed. This issue also affects Debian, as discussed in: <https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=131468> This issue was also reported in the Ubuntu tracker, back in 2016: <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/1567107> It was fixed in Ubuntu, but the changes never made it to Debian. If the networking timed out, no files exist. If the shell is also dash, the '.' operator failing to find any file to source causes the entire shell to exit, regardless of 'set -e' or not. Naturally, this causes problems since the calling init script is unceremoniously killed off in the middle of execution. I'd prefer if the init script continued running, so it has an opportunity to retry the networking or take other actions. (I've encountered a few circumstances where configure_networking times out before the network and DHCP are functional after a power outage.) Each of arm-ubc-04, arm-ubc-05 and arm-ubc-06 (QEMU ganeti guests) stopped responding after starting to build the kernel, and had to be rebooted. The build logs stop are various points - two at different points during drivers/net, and one during the dpkg-deb runs at the end of the build. The one common factor appears to be that the system logs on each machine show the OOM killer being invoked during the build, initially killing syslog but subsequently schroot and many system processes. Each buildd has 12GB of RAM and 120GB of swap available. The issue also seems to be specific to the armhf build - arm-ubc-06 recently successfully built the armel build of the same kernel version. Please let us know if you need any further information. Regards, Adam --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Hi, On 2024-05-17 14:46, Adam D. This is a known issue on arm32, this is known as low memory starvation. Simplistically, the kernel needs low memory to be able to manage the high memory, and when there is not enough low memory available (even if there is plenty of high memory available), the kernel can OOM. I have reinstalled the arm-ubc-04/05/06 buildds as arm64, that should fix the issue, and at the same time fix building chromium and firefox. For the release team, this means that the armel and armhf architectures are now exclusively built from a 64-bit installation. In practice this is similar to what is being done on i386 for many years. Bug#966716: marked as done (initramfs-tools: update-initramfs fails with no conf.d/resume and veracrypt volume mounted)

The system is installed in a ssd "ssd_crypt". In my experience this would make the system unbootable, it would loop on the message "vg1 not found", "vg1" is a lvm volume group whose physical volumes are just "hdd500_crypt". Fortunately I didn't reboot to find out. fstab and crypttab attached. * What led up to the situation? I deleted /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume and had a veracrypt(truecrypt fork) volume mounted while calling update-initramfs -u -k all. I did so because: I don't use hibernation (my swap 4gb is smaller than my ram 16gb) and; My ssd and hdd are encrypted with the same password, if I delete the resume file I'm asked only once for the password at boot. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? I unmounted the truecrypt volume and/or re-created /etc/iniramfs- tools/conf.d/resume (even with an invalid swap path it works). * What was the outcome of this action? I wouldn't expect update-initramfs -u -k all to fail just because there is no resume partition set AND there is a veracrypt volume mounted. A user could easily oversee this and accidentally make the system unbootable during an upgrade just by having a veracrypt volume mounted. * What outcome did you expect instead? To always get an error(not an warning) when there is no resume device set or to always get an error(not an warning) when there is a veracrypt volume mouted. -- Package-specific info: -- initramfs sizes -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 39M Aug 2 09:06 /boot/initrd.img-4.19.0-10-amd64 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 39M Aug 2 09:07 /boot/initrd.img-4.19.0-8-amd64 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 39M Aug 2 09:07 /boot/initrd.img-4.19.0-9-amd64 -- /proc/cmdline BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.19.0-9-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro quiet -- resume RESUME=/dev/mapper/vg1-swap-- /proc/filesystems ext3 ext2 ext4 vfat xfs fuseblk jfs msdos minix hfs hfsplus qnx4 ufs btrfs -- lsmod Module Size Used by btrfs1400832 0 zstd_compress 172032 1 btrfs zstd_decompress81920 1 btrfs xxhash 16384 2 zstd_compress,zstd_decompress xor24576 1 btrfs raid6_pq 122880 1 btrfs ufs86016 0 qnx4 16384 0 hfsplus 118784 0 hfs69632 0 minix 40960 0 msdos 20480 0 jfs 208896 0 uas28672 0 usb_storage73728 3 uas ctr16384 6 ccm20480 9 nft_chain_route_ipv416384 1 xt_CHECKSUM16384 1 nft_chain_nat_ipv4 16384 4 ipt_MASQUERADE 16384 3 nf_nat_ipv416384 2 ipt_MASQUERADE,nft_chain_nat_ipv4 tun49152 1 bridge188416 0 stp16384 1 bridge llc16384 2 bridge,stp devlink77824 0 fuse 122880 7 vboxnetadp 28672 0 vboxnetflt 32768 0 vboxdrv 491520 2 vboxnetadp,vboxnetflt binfmt_misc20480 1 xfs 1458176 1 arc4 16384 2 snd_hda_codec_hdmi 57344 1 rtl8192cu 81920 0 rtl_usb24576 1 rtl8192cu rtl8192c_common61440 1 rtl8192cu nls_ascii 16384 1 nls_cp437 20480 1 rtlwifi98304 3 rtl8192c_common,rtl_usb,rtl8192cu vfat 20480 1 fat86016 2

See here for more info: https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-PMF-Linux-Driver It seems that this module is not included in the Debian Linux Kernel. I have found '# CONFIG_AMD_PMF is not set' for the following versions : - linux-image-6.1.0-11-amd64_6.1.38-4 - linux-image-6.5.0-0.deb12.4-amd64_6.5.10-1~bpo12+1 - linux-image-6.6.13-amd64_6.6.13-1 Enabling this would offer better battery life for AMD Laptops (like my Framework 13). A bit of context: The power-profiles-daemon software gained recently support for amd-pstate driver, and also gained support to handle simultaneously cpu driver (amd-pstate) and platform driver (amd-pmf). (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/upower/power-profiles-daemon/-/merge_requests/127). It seems that the power-profiles-daemon in unstable do not include the commit that allows to handle both drivers at the same time. So I've installed the power-profile-daemons for jammy from this Ubuntu PPA (https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/ppd/+packages). On the aforementioned Acer Chromebook the following kernel configs enable useful modules: - CONFIG_MWIFIEX - CONFIG_MWIFIEX_SDIO - CONFIG_CHARGER_BQ24735 - CONFIG_SENSORS_LM90 - CONFIG_CEC_TEGRA There may be other useful modules for this and other similar Chromebooks that I have not found. Please find a patch attached. It has been build-tested. This should not be backported to bookworm. If you intend to backport, please use dh_movetousr instead. If your package will change for the t64 transition or otherwise rename/split/move its binaries (packages) during trixie, please then upload to experimental and get in touch with the UsrMerge driver, please see the wiki [1].
