Bug#423015: SMBus controller no longer recognised by Etch.
Hello Frans, Thanks for your fast answer. I will try other kernel versions with liveCD and eventually file a bug report to bugzilla.kernel.org. I'll keep you informed. I have the same issue with my Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop. The reason that Knoppix works is quite likely that it uses a much older kernel (2.6.11 instead of 2.6.18). Please see the following upstream bug reports for reference: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6315 http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6395 If, despite the explanations in these references, you would like to follow up on this issue, you will need to file a bug report in bugzilla.kernel.org as this is not a Debian issue. Bug#423015: SMBus controller no longer recognised by Etch.
Package: kernel Version: 2.6.18-4-686 Issue : The SMBus controller is no longer recognised by Etch. A Debian 4.0 Etch have been installed on a Desktop PC (Motherboard Asus P4B533) which previously ran on Sarge. The mbmon hardware monitor program didn't suceeded to access to the sensors, despite the fact that it worked perfectly on Sarge : # mbmon -d No Hardware Monitor found!! InitMBInfo: Success The system was rebooted on a knoppix 3.8.1 live-CD (kernel 2.6.11), and here mbmon works : # mbmon -d Using SMBus access method[Intel8XX(ICH/ICH2/ICH3/ICH4/ICH5/ICH6)]!! Asus chip ASB100(Bach) found If I do lspci with the knoppix live CD I've got the lines : ... :00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL (ICH4/ICH4-L) UltraATA-100 IDE Controller (rev 01) :00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) SMBus Controller (rev 01) :01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation: Unknown device 00f1 (rev a2) ... We can see here the Intel SMBus controller. If I do lspci under Debian Etch don't have any SMBus line, and no other peripheral at address 00:1f.3 : # lspci -M -s 00:1f 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL (ICH4/ICH4-L) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 01) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DB (ICH4) IDE Controller (rev 01) pcilib: Cannot open /sys/bus/pci/devices/:00:1f.2/config pcilib: Cannot open /sys/bus/pci/devices/:00:1f.3/config pcilib: Cannot open /sys/bus/pci/devices/:00:1f.4/config ... The fact that the Intel SMbus controller is undetected prevents monitoring programs like mbmon to access the temperature and voltage sensors of the motherboard.
