RFS: lives

2010-01-09 Thread Harry Rickards
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 1.1.8-1
of my package lives.

It builds these binary packages:
libweed-dev - Development library for inclusion of plugins into LiVES
libweed0 - Runtime library for inclusion of plugins into LiVES
lives - a Video Editing system allowing users to edit and create video
lives-data - Data files for LiVES

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/lives
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/lives/lives_1.1.8-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards
 Harry Rickards

Hi Harry,

a havent't sponsored your package, but I looked at it and have some comments:

On Samstag, 3. Oktober 2009, Harry Rickards wrote:

Please don't sponsoring requests too frequently to this list, you last for
this package you've sent 4 days before this one.

 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/lives/lives_1.1.3-1.dsc

Your gpg key is only signed by yourself. Please try to get some signatures.

Also it would be great, if you could convince the upstream lives developers to
published sha1/sha256 checksums and gpg sign those.

(So one can reliably check that the orig.tar.gz is actually the one published
by upstream and the diff is actually the one from you :)

Then I saw the SaveFileName patch you apply via debian/patches is not
mentioned in debian/changelog and I stopped looking further.

Holger

 Hi,

It would be great if you could upload the newest revision of lives.
There is no new upstream version, so the changes are just in debian/.
 Changelog is as follows:

 lives (1.0.0-5) unstable; urgency=low

   * Removed the bit about PATH from debian/wrapper/lives
   * Removed duplicate entry of Niels Elburg from debian/copyright
   * Added the right dependencies taken from the packaging notes
   * Fixed debian/watch to not think pre-release versions are newer than
 release ones
   * Replaced automake1.10 with automake
   * Made frei0r-plugins-dev and frei0r-plugins not for kfreebsd
   * Made libavc1394, libavc1394-dev, libraw1394 and libraw1394-dev not for
 kfreebsd
   * Added SVN and VCS Browser URL's to debian/control
   * Made the end of the smogrify manpage a bit more formal
   * Removed the autogen.sh bit from debian/rules as it doesn't seem to work
Seeing as autogen.sh doesn't seem to be needed dh must do all the stuff
 automatically

You can simply get the new debian folder from SVN
 (svn://svn.debian.org/svn/collab-maint/deb-maint/lives/trunk/debian) and
add it to the current version of lives from the mainm repository (i.e,
apt-get source lives first). You will have to remove the .svn
directories in debian/ and debian/watch/ though. As long as the .svn
directories are removed, it's lintian clean with information, pedantic
and experimental enabled, although a few experimental info messages are
shown about spelling error's in the actual binary.

Okay. Removed them from Depends. I've created a .dsc and uploaded to

 Hi,

The libweed0 dependency in lives should be versioned (= ${source:Version}).

Also, never use -a for debhelper. -a just means it may fail gratuitously
in some situations, disabling portability. Use the non-broken -s instead.

Okay, thanks. However, it turns out that in the actual lives-data
package, only /usr/share/doc/* is present, no /usr/lib, /usr/share/lives
or /usr/share/locale. Any idea why? Everything's fine in debian/lives-data.

Hi,

The libweed0 dependency in lives should be versioned (= ${source:Version}).

Also, never use -a for debhelper. -a just means it may fail gratuitously
in some situations, disabling portability. Use the non-broken -s instead.

Hello Harry

I am looking for a sponsor for the package lives which I updated and
removed lintian warnings and errors. This is not a non-maintainer upload
as the upstream author Gabriel Finch salsa...@xs4all.nl has agreed to
list me as an 'uploader' in debian/control. The original maintainer was
Gürkan Sengün gur...@phys.ethz.ch.

here's my current work:
http://sid.ethz.ch/debian/lives/nyu/

I think the original maintainer Gürkan Sengün gur...@phys.ethz.ch is a
Debian Developer as although I can't find him using db.debian.org, a
random one of his packages I chose ttf-jura has been uploaded to the
repository, but I can't find an RFS for it, only an ITP. Gürkan, if you
want to upload lives that's great, but if not don't worry.

i'm sorry i'm not a debian developer, but nyu is interested sponsoring the
package (i've cc'd him): Robert Millan r...@debian.org.

The package requires libweed0, which is available from
debian-multimedia.org
(http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/l/lives/). However, only
binary packages exist. Does this need to be uploaded before lives can (a
source package would have to be made)?

yes you should package libweed first into debian, otherwise lives can not
go into main. only packages that work independently inside main, can be main.

Also, would a postinst script that downloaded and installed libweed0 be
acceptable? If not, is it unacceptable to add an override to suppress
lintian warning about symlinks to shared libraries in the main packages?

no you can't do that for main packages.

thanks for your work,
guerkan

wasn't in debian ever...

I don't like this at all. Why are there only binary packages of libweed ?
Is there a problem with making a source package of libweed ?

Why are you talking about downloading and installing libweed0 ? What if
debian-multimedia is down, or Marillat pulls the package ?

I really dont think the debain maintainers would like LiVES to be
dependant on a binary only package. I don't like it either. It stinks.

Please make a source package for it as we discussed.

 Cheers,
 Gabriel.

Okay. There are only binary packages of libweed0 because (if I
understand correctly), Christian Marillat created just binary packages.
As you suggest, I'll create a source package for libweed, so while I'm
doing it, please could everyone ignore the RFS.
