Undefined reference to '...'

1997-09-01 Thread Orn E. Hansen

  I've encountered a condition in GNU C++, where I define the following
template function...

templateclass T
class ancestor {
private:
 ...
public:
 ancestor()
 ~ancestor()
};

templateclass T
ancestorT::ancestor()
{
 ...
}

...

and use it in a main program...

main()
{
  ancestorint something;

  something...
}

  The program compiles without errors, but when the linker is to link the
object files, it is persistent that the reference to 'something' within
the main program is undefined to 'ancestor...'. Every reference to
the object 'ancestorint' is reported as undefined in the program.

  Does anyone have a clue as to why this occurs, and if there is a cure
to this?

 Some monitors are smart enough to switch off when they've got no signal (I
 used to have a CTX 1765GM which did this). Some are less smart and say
 things like 'NO SIGNAL', and stay powered up unless they receive the VESA
 blanking signals.

Try

setterm -blank n -powersave on

This will, if your hardware supports it, put the monitor into 'suspend'
mode. I don't know how to let it go into 'off' mode.

Re: Linux for sale

 For curiosity, what were the names of these two superstores? I
 don't think I have seen Linux being sold in any stores here... (Mass.)

I looked at my comp usa ads (from the newspaper) recently and saw an ad
for professional linux in it. It was for $100, but the fact that they
have it at all impressed me.

Re: Linux for sale

1997-09-01 Thread Jim Pick

 I know that Linux is now on the shelf at Fry's Electronics ... that is the
 Electronics Supermarket in Silicon Valley ... these are HUGE stores, larger
 than the average grocery supermarket. They see thousands of people through
 their doors every day.

I saw some Linux books (with CDs) at the local bookstore in the mall here in
Penticton, B.C., Canada (pop. 30,000). We don't have a computer store that
carries a full selection of software in town (the closest superstore is an
one hour drive away). So there are probably just about as many units of Linux
in stock in town as there are of Win 95 at any one time.

That's getting to be pretty good market penetration. :-)

Cheers,

xf86config is the name of the program which sets up the proper
configuration according to your hardware. This should have been run
automatically when you installed xbase and xserver-svga, which has the
VirGE support. Make sure that you have all the technical specs for your
monitor handy when you run this.

 As well how can I integrate all X-programms and games on the X-screen?
 There is currently just the desktop and a shell for input.

Which window manager are you using? The fvwm95 package sets up some
buttons which are useful and can be customized. More importantly, the
menu package should be installed. This provides menus for many of the
Debian window managers and many packages hook into it. Once you have
installed it, look in the /usr/doc/menu and find out how to further
customize your desktop as you like it. In the case of fvwm95, you can add
buttons and other things as the window manager starts up but you must be
careful not to edit the /etc/X11/fvwm95/system.fvwm295 file itself to make
the customizations since this file is rebuilt EVERY time the update-menus
program is run by you or a package just installed. Rather you must make
all of your customizations in the /etc/X11/fvwm95/system.fvwm2rc95-menu
file and then run update-menus yourself to build the system.fvwm2rc95
file. The next time you start fvwm95 the new changes will be visible.

Some programs do not hook into the menus so you can do it yourself. What
you need to do is to put the appropriate file in the /etc/menu directory.
The documentation is in the /usr/doc/menu directory.

Hope this helps,

Carlo

 Make sure you install the xbase package as well, as it contains a
 program xbase-config which will make your XF86Config file. (i think it is
 called that - someone may need to correct me here)

There are two configuration programs:
 * xf86config, a text-based config program
 * XF86Setup, a graphical config program

Sometimes one will work when the other one didn't.

 I still haven't figured out how to make custom menus yet. I do know that
 it involves editing your .Xresources or .Xsession files, something like
 that anyways.

No, you edit your window manager rc file -- .fvwm2rc for instance.

Private XF-Mail package available

1997-09-01 Thread George Bonser
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Ok, folks, I have taken a stab at making a debian package and I will admit that
I cheated a bit :)

I have been using the XF-Mail GUI email package and really like it. I like it
so much that I wanted to share it so I grabbed the .rpm and built a .deb from
it. You are actually going to need to packages and I have placed them both on
an FTP site for you to grab. Here are the instructions:

ftp://corsica.shorelink.com/pub/debian

and grab the xforms_0.86-2_i386.deb and xfmail_1.1-6_i386.deb packages.

Install the xforms package first then then xfmail package.

I have the Debian xforms0 package installed and the installation of the new
pages along side of it has not seemed to break anything on MY system but if it
breaks something on your system you should be able to back everything out using
this procedure:

dpkg --purge xforms
dpkg --purge xfmail
dpkg --purge xforms0

Then reinstall the old xforms0 using dselect or manually.

It looks like the new package overwrites parts of the old xforms0 package and
points the symlink to the newer libforms.so.0.86.

As I said, so far, this has not broken anything on my system and I have a great
new email program (supports POP3, IMAP, SMTP, POP3 mail transmitting, sorting
of incoming mail, PGP, etc).

I created the packages by doing an alien -g package name then a debian/rules on
each package and finally a dpkg-buildpackage on each one. Seemed to work ok.

Re: Private XF-Mail package available

1997-09-01 Thread Britton

I thought rc5 was responsible for this, but I guess I had just never
looked very closely before. With nothing running but the ordinary Debian
stuff (I don't have any deamons running other than the base ones) syslogd
uses as much processor time as it can get (60% with rc5 running for
example, ~98% otherwise) filling up /var/log/messages with:

Aug 31 17:15:04 Beleriand syslogd 1.3-0#11: restart.
Aug 31 17:15:04 Beleriand kernel: klogd 1.3-0, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
Aug 31 17:15:04 Beleriand syslogd 1.3-0#11: restart.
Aug 31 17:15:04 Beleriand syslogd: select: Bad file number
Aug 31 17:15:34 Beleriand last message repeated 218053 times
Aug 31 17:16:34 Beleriand last message repeated 472675 times
Aug 31 17:17:34 Beleriand last message repeated 472623 times
etc. ad infinitum

Note that this log was checked immediately after a reboot.

I believe this is affecting performance, since rc5v2 does not run nearly
as fast as advertised on a Pentium-133 (this is what started me looking at
this stuff, and since I read that syslogd is a tcp/ip related daemon I
blindly suspected rc5). If anyone knows what is going on here I would be
very interested. select is in man(2) but it didn't look like it should be
a userland concern, and It didn't make a lot of sense to me.

While on the subject of odd things that I don't begin to understand: since
I fixed my chatscript so my modem hung up when DTR went low (by
initializing the modem with ATZ and ATD2), my computer occasionally
decides to connect itself to the internet without my doing anything at
all. I run pon, later run poff, and a few minutes or hours later I hear
my computer dialing. It has done this twice now. I have looked for
residual ppp or chat processes with ps -ax but I don't see any. On both
occasions rc5v2 was running, set to communicate freely on all ports. I
don't have diald installed.

Last question: when I ftp from home to sunsite.unc.edu, the ftp process
freezes after the first line from sunsite, like this:

$ ftp sunsite.unc.edu
Connected to sunsite.unc.edu.
220-Welcome to the SunSITE USA ftp archives!
Quit (core dumped)

Re: lpr: unable to get official name for local machine

1997-09-01 Thread Clare Johnstone
 Please can anyone tell me what might have sparked the message:
 lpr: unable to get official name for local machine

Sorry folks, I have found how I caused this - it was by deleting
a line
n.n.n.n bay
from /etc/hosts. ( I got the lpr source to find that out, I find if I put
the same IP numbers as localhost for the local machine (bay) that is
enough to satisfy lpr.)

The line deletion was done while trying to cope with a ppp problem.
So I have had my faith in fsck restored. I hope I can rely on it to
alert me by filename if something is spoilt beyond recovery.

kernel source?

1997-09-01 Thread Mark A. Bialik
Hello:

Forive me if this a newbie question, but I can't seem to find my question
documented anywhere. I'm a long-time slackware user, and compile a new
kernel with my eyes closed. I've decided to give Debian a try, and
everything's been going well. Here's my one problem. I selected to install
the kernel-source for 2.0.29 and 2.0.30 from my new 1.3.1 cd using dselect.
Afterwards, it shows that it was installed, but my /usr/src directory is
still empty.

#1 Where is this source?

#2 Do I still compile using the make config like before?

#3 If I just pull the kernel source via ftp, can I compile like before
(slackware) or do I risk damaging any of Debian's package management features?

Thank for any help!

Linux for sale

 Absolutely. Linux also needs marketing, marketing, and more marketing.
 I can only think of one business need that Linux based systems don't
 support - OCR. Everything else is available.

In terms of marketing, I went into two computer superstores the other day.
Lo and behold, I found LINUX for sale in both chains. In a MS dominated sales
enviroment, I thought I'd never see Linux available. Anyhow, one chain offered
Red Hat Linux; the other offered Professional Linux. The Professional
package (Walnut Creek) included Debian, Red Hat, and Slackware distributions.

mirror regets whole Debian archive

1997-09-01 Thread Jameson Burt
I had for 6 months used mirror to mirror the Debian distribution through
the site uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu.
On August 30, 1997, MY MIRRORING PROCEEDED TO GET THE WHOLE MIRROR,
REPLACING FORMER IDENTICAL FILES.
I did not change mirror sites, I did not change my mirror.defaults file,
though I did turn my computer on after a 3 week vacation.
This regetting-the-whole Debian archive also happened to me last year
under different circumstances when I made many changes in my computer's clock
setting, my debian mirror site, ... .
This is a bit inconvenient with my modem,
requiring a week of constant connection to my ISP.

Checking some dates as my mirror replaces files,
I present three example files [my computer has Eastern Time in the US]:

filedate before date now date at
ftp.debian.orgdate at debian.crosslink.net
 and at uiarchive
   [on Eastern Time in US]
 ---
--
perl_5.003.07-10.debApr 22 5:24  Apr 22 13:24   Apr 22 8:24
(5 hour)  Apr 22 12:24
perl-debug_5.003.07-10.deb  Apr 22 5:23  Apr 22 13:23   Apr 22 8:23
(5 hour)  Apr 22 12:23
ucbmpeg_lr2-2.deb   Mar 20 19:52 Mar 21 4:52Mar 20 22:52
(6 hour)  Mar 21 03:52

Either uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu has added 8 hours to its archive dates on files,
or my computer has somehow changed its dates.
My computer only adjusts system-time via ntpdate or xntpd,
and has without-problem made these changes for some months now.
I just returned from a vacation of 3 weeks.
QUESTION 1: When xntpd and ntpdate change Linux system-time,
or when clock changes the computer's CMOS time,
do the filename dates change?
Could something horrible (nothing I have seen) have happened to
my disk-drive/scsi-bus that changed file dates?

I ran some experimental tests, mirroring the file
debian/bo/binary-i386/hamradio/rspfd_0.04-1.deb from various sites.
The uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu version was replaced
as follows (ordered by longitude):
ftp site location file date result
---     -  -
ftp.debian.org.auAustralia  Mar 20 14:52   no change
ftp.uwa.edu.au   Australia  Apr 16 15:14   replaced
uiarchive [obviously the April date is wrong]
ftp.riken.go.jp  Japan  Mar 20 13:52   no change
sunsite.doc.ic.ac.uk UK Mar 20 22:52   no change
uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu   Illinois   Mar 21 4:52MY USUAL MIRROR
[will replace a file from ftp.riken.go.jp]
ftp.caldera.com  Utah   Mar 21 5:52no change
[SURPRISE SINCE THIS IS NEWER]
ftp.cdrom.comCalifornia Mar 20 13:52   no change
ftp.kernel.org   California Mar 20 22:52   no change
aij.st.hmc.edu   California Mar 21 06:52   replaced
uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu
ftp.fuller.edu   California Mar 21 6:52replaced
uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu
From this, one might conclude that a time greater than 1 hour results
in replacement.
I AM DISSAPPOINTED THAT WHEN I CHANGE DEBIAN MIRROR SITES,
THE PROGRAM MIRROR WILL OFTEN REGET THE WHOLE ARCHIVE.

QUESTION 2: Does mirror replace a file if the mirror site indicates
a file-date more than 1 hour newer than my computer's file-date,
irrespective of time zone?

QUESTION 3: When Debian went to version 1.2, many Debian mirror sites
mirrored ftp.debian.org badly, dropping good files and failing to
mirror others.
I expect this problem will recur in the future.
Is it reasonable to switch mirroring sites, or should I expect
such a switch to reget the whole Debian archive?

QUESITON 4: I suppose either my computer changed file-dates
or the archive site changed file-dates.
Which do you suppose happened, or do you suppose
system-dates/computer-clocks matter here?

Here are some relevant lines from my mirror.defaults file:
site=uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu
remote_dir=/pub/systems/linux/distributions/debian
do_deletes=true
max_delete_dirs=50%
max_delete_files=50%
mode_copy=true
compress_conv_patt=
compress_conv_expr=
compress_patt=
# I do not set force_times (default is yes, forcing local times
# to match remote times).
# I do not set get_newer (default is true,
# so get archive files newer than my computer's files).
# I do not set use_timelocal (false would adjust to GMT, I gather).

in dselect, use the first option to access the cdrom, and you have to

or you can mount it first, and run dselect, and in the first option,
choose 'mounted' and type in the directory you mounted your CD.

Re: kernel source?

Hi!

 #1 Where is this source?
Its in /usr/src/

 #2 Do I still compile using the make config like before?
You can stil configure you kernel just as before. Bu for compiling
it's much more elegant to use the 'make-kpkg' program. With one
command you can build a Debian package for installing the kernel.

 #3 If I just pull the kernel source via ftp, can I compile like before
 (slackware) or do I risk damaging any of Debian's package management features?
You can, but read the make-kpkg man page first. There are parameters to
give to make-kpkg to Debianize the kernel source tree.

 the cdrom as members of the group 'disk'.

This will also give all those users access to the hard drives, giving
them the possibility to do all sorts of damage, even by accident.

I would prefer to `chgrp cdrom /dev/hdd' and `vigr' to add the users

Are you sure that was 5.03, on slackware? Really? I'd say it was 4.03.
Anyway, chances are, that anyone who sells Slackware CD's with gs-aladdin 4.03
on it gets sued (read the copyright on gs-aladdin), so that's the reason
it doesn't get included with debian: it's non-free.

That also gives you the clue as to where to find gs-aladdin 4.03: in
debian's non-free section.

Yes, I know I should package up gs-aladdin 5.0x for debian (I'm the Debian
maintainer), but I haven't had time so far.

Not yet available. However, just getting the sources, and compiling for

John,

Did you by any chance defragment the win95 partition? We have a
machine where doing this seems to upset the linux partition - best
guess was that the win95 defragmenter had a record of the disk

way, but you never know - it would take too much time to track it down

It should be in /usr/src. You must have done something wrong with dselect

dpkg -i file name.deb (The deb is there to remind you that dpkg
doesn't work on tgz files.)

You can, but as someone mentioned, you can also use debian's program

You can, as I've done many times before. I don't believe there are any

advantageous if you have a reason for controlling kernel's with dselect.

Good luck,

1. upgrade to a newer syslogd package.

2. edit /etc/syslog.conf and comment out (put # at start of line) all

3. mkdir /var/log/news

BTW, what version of debian are you running? are you still running

Upgrading Netscape Installer

1997-09-01 Thread David Morris
I really like the netscape installer package and used it many months ago to
get netscape working. I have 3.01-1 currently installed.

So far, when dselect tells me there is an update available on the netscape
package, I've placed it on hold. However, I was wondering if it is
safe/needed/possible to update the deb package without having to DL the
netscape binary again?

I've been wondering more lately after I upgraded my system to the glib6
unstable version of Debian. I've been seeing errors when I try to print a
page. The error is as follows.

sh:error in loading shared libraries
/usr/lib/libgnumalloc.so.5: undefined symbol: __default_morecore_init

Would the installer package fix that? Or is it a bit more complicated than
that?

wu-ftp...libraries for the guests!

1997-09-01 Thread Stephanie Coriat
Hi,

I would like to know which libraries i have to copy for the ftp session to work
properly
for users defined as guests.
I have about 200 users for whom i want a restricted access ftp (access to their
home directories but
not to the rest of the hard disk!).
I configured ftpaccess and /etc/passwd properly, but the command ls wouldn't
work for these users.
I copied /bin/ls into /home/ftpuser/bin, and I know now that i also need to
copy some libraries (from /lib to /home/ftpuser1/lib,
/home/ftp/user2/lib..) for ls to work.
But, does anyone know which libraries i need exactly, and if there is really no
other alternative.

Thanks,

Copy /etc/X11/XF86Config to /etc/X11/XF86Config.old and then run
xbase-configure. It would be a good idea to have the XF86_VGA16 server
installed and the entry in /etc/X11/Xserver should declare it the server.
(You can change this back to the actual server after the configuration is
complete. The xbase-configure dialog box doesn't run with all servers. It
does run with the vga-16 server.

 There is currently just the desktop and a shell for input.

 As well I got some problems while installing Netscape. It didn't worked
 although I made the selection in dselect. I always got errormessages

The only thing that Debian can package is an installer. You will need to
download the tar.gz file from Netscape and place it in /tmp so the
installer can find it. (I believe I did this with lynx package, in the web
subdirectory)

Re: Linux for sale

 Absolutely. Linux also needs marketing, marketing, and more marketing.
 I can only think of one business need that Linux based systems don't
 support - OCR. Everything else is available.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:
 In terms of marketing, I went into two computer superstores the other day.
 Lo and behold, I found LINUX for sale in both chains. In a MS dominated sales
 enviroment, I thought I'd never see Linux available. Anyhow, one chain offered
 Red Hat Linux; the other offered Professional Linux. The Professional
 package (Walnut Creek) included Debian, Red Hat, and Slackware distributions.

For curiosity, what were the names of these two superstores? I
don't think I have seen Linux being sold in any stores here... (Mass.)

Linux seems to be getting very strong in the book area, however. In
places like Barnes and Nobel, seem to be nearly as many Linux books
as those dedicated to Unix in general. Since many include
distributions on CDs, still probably one of the main ways for people
not in the know to get Linux...

Magossa'nyi It is easy with 2.0.30 at least. I am not brave

Magossa'nyi you have to do is to compile the module for it, and
Magossa'nyi modprobe ppa when you want to use it. You will have
Magossa'nyi /dev/sda to mount the disks from.

 You can get it to be autoloaded by `kerneld' iff you edit the
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.dep file after you `depmod -a`.
Attached is a diff; you'll have to hand edit though; I doubt if this
will work as a patch.

 I've found that `ppa' works best as a module, since that way, you can
plug the Zip in with the computer already booted, and when the driver
is inserted, it gets initialized. Otherwise, with it compiled in, you
have to reboot before the computer will see the drive. (Sound is
the similar thing. When quake screws up the sound driver, you can
unload and reload the module to fix it. Otherwise it takes a reboot.)

 I'm using 2.0.30 with the `parport' patch and the Curtin ppa driver.
It's a lot faster than the stock ppa from 2.0.30. If you look on
http://www.linuxhq.org/, you should be able to find the parport
patch...  I think.

 This is a bug in `depmod', isn't it??? I reported it once.

Debian kernels .30 and .29 are alread compiled for zip support, as long as
the zip drive is connected at startup, it will see it. Then, all you need
to do is:

- cd /
- mkdir zip
- mount (options) /dev/sda4 /zip
- cd /zip

Do what you need to do then `umount /zip`

If the kernel doesn't have support, compile a kernel, add scsi support and
say 'n' till you get to the one for Iomega Drive Support or something
along that line, then say 'y'.

 Hmm. Does AWE have an OPL chip? I haven't at least compiled that to my kernel

 everything is working fine.

Netscape installation problems

1997-09-01 Thread Dave Neuer
Hi

I am trying to install Netscape 3.01 on my Debian system. The machine
running debian has no connection to the Internet, so to transfer files
to the Debian box, I have to first download them onto my PowerMac, and
then transfer them over my local network. The mac doesn't like the name
netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz, and so truncates it
to netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow. I transfered the file to the
Linux box, and then attempted to run the Debian netscape installer, and
got the following message:

ERROR: The Netscape archive must be in /tmp under the name:
   /tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.[gz|Z]

   Do NOT simply rename the archive of another version in order to
   force it to install with this package. It will not work.

   Archive files can be found on ftp.netscape.com.

dpkg: error processing netscape (--install):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 netscape

How can I get around this, short of setting up a modem on the PC, or
running a DHCP program (like VirtualSurfer, which is a $150 piece of
commercial software) on the Mac?

Hint: I'm looking for someone who can give me detailed instructions on
editing netscape_3.01_1.1.deb's preinstallation script so that however
it's checking that the name's been changed is suppressed (since the name
is the ONLY part of the original archive that has been changed).

Thanks,
Dave Neuer

Could it be the /sbin/request-route script, part of modutils? Apparently,
this is a script called by kernel whenever it cannot find a route. You migt
want to change this script to make sure it doesn't randomly connect you to
your isp.

Dave,

why can't you just rename that file to it's _original_ name when it's
already on your Debian box?

Something like

mv netscape-v301-export.x86-unknow. \
/tmp/netscape-v301-export.x86-unknown-linux-elf.tar.gz

Alex Y.

 Thanks,

Re: Undefined reference to '...'

1997-09-01 Thread Robert Resendes
Are you linking with gcc or g++? Try g++ for the link phase.

Here is the output I get for a simple test program:

-- Begin temp.C
#include iostream.h

templateclass T
class ancestor {
private:
   T myvar;
public:
   ancestor(T x) { cout  ancestor()  endl; myvar = x; }
   ~ancestor() { cout  ~ancestor()  endl; }
   void dump() { cout  ancestor.myvar:   myvar  endl; }
};

int
main( int argc, char* argv ) {
   ancestorint something(5);

   something.dump();

   return 0;
}
-- End temp.C

 g++ temp.C   -o temp
 temp
ancestor()
ancestor.myvar: 5
~ancestor()

 gcc  temp.C   -o temp
/tmp/cca021531.o: In function `ancestorint::~ancestor(void)':
/tmp/cca021531.o(.text+0x6d): undefined reference to `endl(ostream )'
/tmp/cca021531.o(.text+0x77): undefined reference to `cout'

   The program compiles without errors, but when the linker is to link the
 object files, it is persistent that the reference to 'something' within
 the main program is undefined to 'ancestor...'. Every reference to
 the object 'ancestorint' is reported as undefined in the program.

   Does anyone have a clue as to why this occurs, and if there is a cure
 to this?

 I know about
   setterm blank n
 which is fine as far as it goes, but I think it only blanks the screen
 rather than using the more advanced power saving features.

You have to modify
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/vesa_blank.c

and modify the line
#define DEFAULT_VESA_BLANKING_MODE  VESA_NO_BLANKING

in
#define DEFAULT_VESA_BLANKING_MODE  VESA_POWERDOWN

and recompile the kernel.
