/\_ \[EMAIL PROTECTED] \/_/\ \ _ __ ._. __ \ \ \ /\___ \ /\ \ /| |/\ \ __ \ \ \\/| __ \\ \ \|| |\ \ \ /\ \_\_\ \/\ \L\ \\ \ \| | \ \ \_\V/_ \ \__/\ \/ \ \___| \ \_\ d o o b \/_/ \/___/ \/__/\/_/ \\_// +-oo-oo-+ | CMA (Centro de Microelectronica Aplicada) | | U.L.P.G.C. | |Canary Islands | +---+

No oigo MIDI
Hola.
Antonio Castro wrote: On Wed, 20 Jan 1999, Gerardo Aburruzaga Garcia wrote: On Wed, 20 Jan 1999, Antonio Castro wrote: [...]
This is a bit off topic but the knowledege seems to be here so what the heck. When I did the Deb install I used the existing /home and swap areas from a RedHat installation residing on the same disk. a) It's closer to the natural language than C and, of course, C++, and all of us think in our own natural language (english, spanish, french, german, etc...) and this is the first language we use when we develope a program. This can also be a disadvantage, because programming _is_ much unlike natural language. Yes, natural language is quite far from the code of a programm but the first algorithms that one must develope for a programm are much like cooking recipes in natural language. Is there someone out there thinking in C or Pascal? organization than C or Pascal. Procedural programming is more structured than BASIC, but OO programming is much more structured than procedural programming. Pascal itself is an OOP language, in a way. Any pascal unit is almost and object. But if you want learning OOP just get a Pascal package with objects like Borland Pascal 7.0 for DOS. To declare an object in Pascal you must use the reserved word 'OBJECT'; more clear water. Learn C is not necessary the way to understand linux. To understand linux you must know how to programm devices like controllers, video cards, sound cards, etc..., and programm devices is something that you can do with Pascal also. This I agree with. However, reading C code written by experts requries some understanding of C on its own. You can start with any language. For a complete beginner, I would advocate Scheme. Even if you don't want to do big projects in Scheme, you can start very fast. A good book on programming (using Scheme) is Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, Abelson/Sussman. ATAPI CDROM -- Aargh! Newbie problems
Well, this becomes a long story (3 months of hassle so far :) ), so here's a keyword list: ATAPI CDROM Linux distributions Debian Linux NEC-260 (250?) CDROM Creative Labs CD1220E CDROM Award BIOS IDT-C6 Winchip, 200MHz Shuttle Spacewalker Motherboard (HOT-569) I'm trying to get my first Linux system working (I have big plans for it, if I can ever get anywhere with it!). The first go at this I used an old Soundblaster Pro with a connected CDROM, which seemed to work okay, though I'm not sure I thoroughly tested it. Unfortunately, I gave that to my Mom for unrelated reasons, thinking, No problem, it's old anyway, I'll get an IDE CDROM and it'll be simpler Heh, heh, heh, little did I suspect. :) So here we go, I am attempting to install Debian version 2.0.2 from a Linux Systems Labs CDROM (the dmesg utility reports Kernel version 2.0.34). I liked the Debian webpage and attitude, and since I'm used to Solaris 2.6 at work, I thought that the packages approach to software loading was nice (don't know if other distributions have this [?] ). I have two CDROM ATAPI IDE drives: one is an NEC 2x, which says NEC-250 on the drive itself, but the BIOS reads it as NEC-260, and so does the debian dmesg utility. The other is a Creative Labs 12x, which has a goofy infra-red remote with MS Windows support. It says Infra-1800 on it, but the BIOS calls it a Creative Labs CD1220E. Either of these drives works okay on my Windows system. Both fail to work on the Linux box, but in completely different ways, as follows: The NEC-260: Is not correctly recognized. First of all, the distribution disk will not boot on it (I assume no CD boot disk would work, but the Debian one, is the only bootable CD I have). This seems to have no effect, however. Anyway, the system does not acknowledge /dev/hdb to exist at all, so I can't mount it. Yuck! Since this was getting difficult, I tried swapping the drives: Creative CD1220E: Better: it boots the Debian installation disk, up to the initial message. However, attempting to proceed (pressing enter at the boot: prompt), results very quickly in either a hang-up, or a reboot (it appears to be random which). If I install from the floppy disks, I can then mount the CDROM and attempt to install packages from it, but whenever it tries to load a .tgz file, zcat reports CRC errors -- so the files must be getting corrupted (?). Copying the data to available space on the hard disk, I tried again, with the same problem (I used cp -dpRv /cdrom /home/cd1 to do this). So, it would appear that the corruption problem exists with the copy command as well, and is not just a problem with the installation program (I thought perhaps the cp command might catch and correct errors that got past the installation program). So I'm up a creek without a CDROM drive (or something like that :) ). Anyway, I'd like to get to the bottom of this, or at least find a way around it. Both drives claim to be IDE ATAPI type. Both use a driver in DOS/Windows (loaded by config.sys), which the MSCDEX program then uses. I tried installing the CD1220E on the DOS/Windows machine while leaving the NEC driver in place. A DOS game (Return to Zork, for anyone who's interested) reported numerous read errors in this configuration, although it mostly worked. Replacing with the driver supplied with it fixed the read errors. Based on that, I'm guessing maybe the DOS driver traps and corrects bad reads, and that the Linux ATAPI CDROM driver (which must be a generic driver, right?) does not have that facility. Then on large files, it just corrupts the data, and that's my problem. But if so, how do I know another CDROM won't just do the same thing? Could this instead be a problem with the BIOS or motherboard? This is: Award Modular BIOS v4.5PG, An Energy Star Ally Copyright (C) 1984-97, Award Software, Inc. For the life of me, I think I've tried everything in getting this to work both with the LDAP and the httpd mode. If anyone has set this up successfully and is willing to answer a couple of questions, please let me know. The closest I got was with httpd mode using the Apache::Roaming perl module. Kernel make config
Is it possible that when compiling a custom kernel the make utility ie xconfig or menuconfig could be made to offer the options that were used for the default kernel that came with the system? I note that tere is an option for reading a configuration file so I guess al I need is that file. Anyone no where I colud get it. I only ask because when ever I compile sound into my kernel I nearly always screw up some other part of my system. It seem to me that a lot of people might like to have this feature perhaps it could be included as a package?? Pete

Is there a way to get my LaserJet 6L to work? APSfilter and magicfilter do not have modules/drivers that work. The most they have is LaserJet 4L. The problem with this printer is that it is in sleep mode all the time, and the driver must wake it up. Are there any plans for this printer driver wise?

I've seen reference to multiple displays in the X docs, but it isn't very clear on how to set this up. I assume I'll need to create Xsetup_1 and XStartup_1 (etc) in my /etc/X11 dirs for the new display, but where do you tell kdm (or xdm) to start the second login screen? My remarks apply in the strictest sense only to xdm itself. I assume kdm/wdm/whatever work similarly, but since I don't use them or maintain them I couldn't say. /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers determines what X servers are managed by xdm. 2 login screens on the local machine, both managed by xdm, is pretty straightforward. :0 local /usr/bin/X11/X :0 vt7 -bpp 32 :1 local /usr/bin/X11/X :1 vt8 -bpp 32 Simply put something like above two lines in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers. Some of the options to the X server (the part after /usr/bin/X11/X) may be wrong or redundant in your case. Fooling with Xsetup_1, Xstartup_1, et al., is only necessary if you need server :1 to behave differently that the default versions of the files (without the underscores). If you do create these _1 files, for instance by simply copying the _0 versions over, be sure you edit /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config to set the appropriate X resources, so that xdm knows to use those files. DisplayManager._1.resources:/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_1 DisplayManager._1.setup:/etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_1 DisplayManager._1.startup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup_1 DisplayManager._1.reset:/etc/X11/xdm/Xreset_1 and so forth. You can of course also have xdm manage one session, and use startx to start another. Just keep in mind that if xdm is already controlling server :0, you need to tell startx what server number to use. startx -- :1 Multiple startx's can be run similarly. startx -- :2 and so forth until you run out of free virtual consoles. You can always tell the XFree86 X servers which virtual console to use by supplying the vtN option, where N is the number of a free virtual console. Just be sure you don't tell the X server to use a virtual console that, say, getty has a hold of (vt1 to vt6 in a default Debian system). That causes big problems. That should be about all there is to it. I hope this helps. When I get around to writing the Debian XFree86 FAQ, I'll definitely have a couple of entries about multiple X servers running concurrently on the same machine. -- G. Re: mount problems
Thanks to all. However this problem is not solved: /rex is an empty directory created as a mount point. sudo fuser /rex and sudo fuser /rex return nothing. There is no /dev/rex But in a previous post you wrote (if I got the quoting right): sudo mount /dev/hda4 or sudo mount /dev/rex I get the response mount: /dev/hda4 already mounted or /rex busy. However, df, mount and /mtab all show that /dev/hda4 is not mounted. which implies you were trying to mount something on /dev/rex. What exactly is there in your /etc/fstab file? The issue is not compatibility of the formats, but rather compatibility of the contained programs and their file locations. Example: foo.deb - keeps config file in /etc/foo.conf foo.rpm - keeps config file in /usr/some/other/location/foo.conf bar.deb - depends on foo.deb Has a post-install script that parses the information in foo.conf and fails miserably to find the file from the converted RPM. Requiring the maintainer of a Debian package to be compatible with not only the relevant deb files, but also with any possible rpm (Official or not) that may be floating out on the web would be intractable. Debian is able to do some amazing things because the packages can depend on other packages conforming to Debian policy and conventions. Have you played with apache and its modules on Debian? Great stuff! You can drop the mod-perl deb on top of the apache deb and it reconfigures itself almost as if by magic. Developers are now working on configuration tools and the ability to administer multiple machines centrally. This would not be possible if it had to support foreign packaging systems and their non-Debian-aware install scripts. We should not hold back progress of our distribution to accomodate less-advanced formats especially when Debian has the most packages availble compared to any other distro. -Mitch Now I get the idea. It is virtually impossible for RPM support to be implemented in a manner that would work w/o problems. I was wondering about RPM since some people suggested that RPM support could (will, some said) play a key role as a selection criterion in competition among Linux distros. I wouldn't bother about this, at least not much, but Eric S. Raymond said this, so I looked at it again. Jernej
