Te adjunto su descripcion: ### Package: debian-cd Status: install ok installed Priority: optional Section: contrib/admin Installed-Size: 899 Maintainer: Raphael Hertzog [EMAIL PROTECTED] Version: 2.1.92 Depends: perl5 | perl, libdigest-md5-perl | libmd5-perl, sysutils, apt (= 0.3.11.1), dpkg-dev (= 1.4.1.6), dpkg-multicd, make, mkhybrid | mkisofs Recommends: lha, unzip Conffiles: /etc/debian-cd/conf.sh d45463c7044a18281bb8f3f1ea6cc22f Description: Tools for building (Official) Debian CD set This package was formerly called YACS (for Yet Another CD Script). . You will need unzip for building i386 images and lha for m68k images.

I have debian on a desktop at home, simply a users setup. I now want to setup a laptop (IBM Thinkpad 600) with a development environment as well as the usual office like stuff (StarOffice I'm presuming) to handle the legacy corporate stuff like M$ documents and presentations. I could do the debian stuff again, but I wondered if there are other candidates that I should consider. Show a newbie that and you will see the dust as he turns and runs back to the Windows camp. Personally, I agree. The issue brought up was not one of is Emacs powerful or is emacs 'intuitive' but is emacs useful to a newbie? Once again, personally, I can't stand the thing, and I'm definitely not a newbie. It's an EDITOR, not an OS... the last thing I want is a M$-Word for editing my sources.list. I love joe since it's powerful, has many faces, is fast and lean, and if I forget a keystroke I can ^KH to find it. Oh yeah, you can type jmacs if you have the time to learn the commands. Now they say they run GNOME... I can't help but think MAYBE they're using their skills a bit more productively; instead of writing impossible shell commands to make a titlebar on an xterm, they pop open a gterminal and get coding. OK, maybe xemacs. The point is; some of us don't want to load a browser and a news client and a doctor game to write an e-mail message. We'd rather work the *nix toolbox way. Just realize that and don't condemn us for that, and on the larger scale, realize that something like pico is *good for Linux*... Perl wizards may not want to learn the editor language and the programming language at the same time! We may end up with some darn useful Perl scripts. An OS to make you think? Who says that's its job? It's incendiary comments on a mailing list that make you think! You really don't want to alter when the network configuration script is executed. Instead, add your network module to /etc/modules. Just try regular debian or maybe the Oreilly/VA/SGI pseudo-potato, if you have too many problems try corel or stormix, both are quite easy, far easier than windows, I goofed with corel for larfs, and I think I clicked like 5 ok boxes and it installed tons of junk that more or less worked, stormix was similar. Re: lilo mbr on hda with linux on hdc?
I have a machine with two hard disks here, that other OS resides on hda and I added the second drive (hdc) for Debian. The setup installed a MBR on hdc, but my BIOS only supports booting from hda. Is there a way to install lilo in the MBR on hda and have it boot linux from hdc1? lilo.conf: change the boot=/dev/hdc into boot=/dev/hda image=/dev/hdc1 should be already there and it is fine. and an option other=/dev/hda1 is needed for booting the other os. I tried that, but LILO hangs with LI-. I did run lilo to update What LI means: LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer. What I think is that you need to have the /boot directory with all its files on the boot=/dev/???. The two important files are /boot/map and /boot/boot.b . With the option map=/boot/map and install=/boot/boot.b you can specify where those two files are, but only relative two boot=/dev/???. (At least that's my understanding) What I suggest is create a small partition with the contends of the /boot directory say /dev/hda1, and mount /dev/hda1 under /boot. And try to configure as follows, boot=/dev/hda1 map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b root=dev/hdc ... You could first try this on a floppy (so that you don't need to repartition). I don't know whether it is possible to actually keep the files in /boot on a dos or vfat partition (might be another possibility) For further information: http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/LILO.html#toc4, and http://www.spade.com/linux/howto/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html#toc12 These are standard HOWTO's that you should also have on your system. I have an old computer that has 800MB windoze partition and 400 MB linux partition. While my sister was using windows today, it crashed and damaged the partition information. boot into the rescue linux system. run cfdisk -z. if you exactly know your old partitioning, then simply reproduce it. if not, then make the whole disk one big partition (type fat16 or fat32/win95 [possibly lba]). this should give you access tho the windoze data. if you have lilo installed in the mbr, then re-run it (if you were able to recover the linux partition). if not, then you would probably have to run fdisk /mbr after booting into dos. if you´re unlucky, then more than only the partition table has been destroyed ... good luck! -- Hi! When I try to use the ps -aux command, usually the lines is too long and the screen is not large enough to display the whole line.In the times when I use Redhat 6.0 I can just solve it by COLUMNS=200 ps-aux (orginally COLUMNS=80),if the lines is too long it will wrapped to next lines. However,I find that this don't work in debian. Re: [OT] VBS Script Summary (I love you)
It is a VBS script (Visual Basic Script) which on most Windows 95-2000 based machines is executable via. the C:\Windows\wscript.exe program. The VBS extention is associated with this application. Users save the attachment then run it, or run the attachment, and the attachment modifies registry settings, deletes files, infects mIRC scripts and HTML extensions, so on and so forth. Nothing new really - like all viruses of this kind it is dependent on the person running the attachment. It does not execute just by opening the email. Whirring hard drive fails to boot up fully
Hello, Apologies for the long message; I'm trying to give as much information as possible. After a few crashes with my official 2.1r2 machine that I put down to hardware (inadequate cooling possibly), it seemed to be fairly stable - until I rebooted into NT. It got to the startup blue screen with the dots going across and then the hard drive started whirring sporadically but repetitively (if that makes sense). When I restarted, it did the same whirring when trying to access the disk for the first time (after the POST and stuff). My active partition is hda1 which is NT's C: drive, and I use NTLoader to get to Linux on hda2. After a few whirrs 1FA: appears, and by pressing A (changes to 1234F:) followed by 2 I can go directly into Linux (through LILO). This suggests that the disk isn't _completely_ dead, even if it is very ill. However, after the partition check (hda: hda1 hda2 hda3 hda4 hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 ) the whirring starts again, and is shortly followed by many error messages. I'm copying by hand so I hope they're accurate: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=722927, sector=2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:02, sector 2 EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=722927, sector=2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:02, sector 2 MINIX-fs: unable to read superblock [MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 0,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=022,bmap] [me=0x1c,cs=0,#f=36,fs=65526,fl=14268,ds=54886,de=0,data=54886,se=59648,ts=8 0622 4184,ls=5120,rc=0,fc=4294967295] Transaction block size = 512 hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=722989, sector=64 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:02, sector 64 isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev 03:02 iso_blknum 16 block 32 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:02 If I boot using tomsrtbt I can use fdisk to view the partition table (which seems to be correct), and I also managed to delete the swap partition (hda3) and replace it with a new (ext2) one. I could mke2fs it, mount it and copy files to it. Within tomsrtbt I cannot e2fsck any of the existing partitions (although the new hda3 is fine) - very similar errors to the above are reported (this for 'e2fsck /dev/hda2'): hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekCopmlete DataRequest Error } hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=722927, sector=2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:02, sector 2 e2fsck: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in showrt read while tryin g to open /dev/hda2 Could this be a zero-length partition? The drive is an IBM DeskStar 20.5GB, 7200RPM and was bought in January this year. The BIOS has the disk in LBA mode and thinks it's about 8GB in size. The partition table is now the following (hda3 used to be Linux swap of identical size): Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2495 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes Device BootStart End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 45 3614316 DOS 16-bit =32M /dev/hda246 64 152617+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda365 80 128520 83 Linux native /dev/hda481 1609 12281692+ 5 Extended /dev/hda581 462 3068383+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda6 463 717 2048256 83 Linux native /dev/hda7 718 1099 3068383+ 83 Linux native /dev/hda8 1100 1609 4096543+ 7 OS/2 HPFS I'm hoping someone out there might recognise the problem or be able to interpret the error messages. Does anybody know specifically what could be wrong? Is the disk really dead (should I send it back)? Is there any chance of retrieving any data from the existing partitions? There's nothing vitally important (I'd have made backups if there was anything :-) ) but there are a few files it would be preferable not to lose. I haven't tried reformatting the lot yet for this reason. Thanks for any help, Paul Stephenson
install problem; modules
I am attempting to install potato and get the following error when setting up the modules to install in the kernel: modprobe: Can't open /target/etc/modules.conf I have done the following: (1) downloaded the contents of /main/disks-i386 to my harddrive; (2) created rescue.bin and root.bin diskettes; (3) rebooted and successfully started to installation process; (4) installed the base system (base2_2.tgz and drivers.tgz) from my DOS partition. At this point the installation program enters the modules setup process and I get the above error for all modules I try to install. Thanks, Dave David B.
