RE: Las dudas con ADSL
Alvarez, Angel dijo: En España telefonica usa pppoe??

Saludos y gracias.

Re: Off-Topic : Linux and Microsoft
Abraços, Leonardo Custodio Debian Linux: Resistance is futile! e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - Attach - No one's using Linux, claims Microsoft By Andrew Orlowski in San Francisco Posted: 13/06/2001 at 11:21 GMT Gartner Dataquest has pegged the proportion of Linux servers shipped in the United States at 8.6 per cent. Gartner analyst Jeffery Hewitt claims that this figure - which includes 'white box' shipments, but excludes server appliances such as Sun's Cobalt range - is dramatically lower than the 20 per cent plus cited by arch rivals IDC. Of that 8.6 per cent, eight per cent is attributed to Red Hat and 0.6 per cent to other distros. The survey is dated May 30, but was made public yesterday. We don't usually hear about analyst surveys from vendors in advance of publication. But yesterday a note dropped in from Microsoft's PR company, Waggener Edstrom. 8.6 per cent is... certainly in line with what we are hearing from our customers and partners, wrote a friendly Wagg-Ed flak. Now there's some dispute over what a 'shipment' actually involves, as NewsForge's Rob 'roblimo' Miller points out in this analysis. And he has a very good point: for example, Gartner pegs Linux shipments in the supercomputer space as 'zero' this year. In fact Linux is well established on commodity parallel clusters at many scientific sites. Many of these were assembled in-house, so a shipment clearly doesn't correlate to a working installation. However, Microsoft's pre-emptive strike may be tactical. Hewitt actually predicts that volume shipments of Linux - even using Gartner's contested definition of 'shipment' and 'server' - will mushroom in the next four years. Total worldwide Linux deployment will quadruple from 2.4 million to 9.1 million, predicts Gartner, with explosive growth in the supercomputer area: up from that dubious 'zero' this year to over 5000 by 2005. In the $25,000 to $100,000 range - the low-end company workhorse - Linux shipments will increase ninefold. In the sub-$5000 space, Linux will grow over six fold. So this may be a case of the Beast getting its retaliation in first. ® -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? mirroring just binary-i386 files
Is there a way to mirror just the Debian package files needed for a given architecture? That is, given the pool directories and all the symbolic links to them, is there any way to mirror just the section under /debian/dists/potato and just the files needed for binary-i386? I'm currently using mirror, but run into a series of problems: - If I don't flatten or suppress the symbolic links, it seems I'd have to mirror the whole pool in order to have the pool files to which the symbolic links under /debian/dists/potato refer. I don't have space for that. Thereore, I configured mirror to flatten symbolic links (download the linked file instead of creating a link locally). - I got a lot of duplicate .deb files because I've flattened the links from /debian/dists/potato/.../binary-i386 to /debian/dists/potato/.../binary-all. I don't really have the space for that either. Since I thought everything the binary-all directories was linked to from the binary-i386 directory, I mirrored just the binary-i386 directories (with links flattened). - Unfortunately, the Packages file refers to the binary-all directories. To solve that, I created a binary-all symbolic link to each binary-i386 directory. - Unfortunately, it turns out that not everything listed in binary-all is also listed in binary-i386 on the server. ** Is that intentional or an error? For example, ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/doc/ does not list glibc-doc..., although that file is in ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-all/doc/ . Does rsync give better control over link expansion than mirror? (E.g., for any link under /debian/dists/potato to a file not under /debian/dists/potato, expand the link (as a file under /debian/dists/potato); but for links within the subtree rooted at /debian/dists/potato, preserve them.) Does some form of apt support permanently mirroring a distribution? (Permanently as opposed to whichever cache it is that apt asks if you want to purge?) (I want to maintain a local mirror so that when I want to install something, it's already downloaded and I can install it quickly.) Thanks, Daniel -- Daniel Barclay [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Hmm. Re: cdcd sound level
Thomas, Sounds like you have volume settings mixed up. The cd channel has its very own setting then there is the Master setting. Both of these settings have control over the volume of the cdplayer. I generally max the cd then control it via the main - seems to work well. I don't however max the PCM volume (wav) cuz it tends to add distortion. I don't know what mixer you use, but pull down aumix (it's apt-get'able). hth. tatah On Thursday 14 June 2001 13:56, Thomas H. Some mouse clicks don't work, some do
I am running woody, with gnome, X 4.0, and sawfish. sawfish (and gnome-sawfish) are leftovers from Ximian, but it is mostly a straight Debian system. The mouse is mostly working, but the following things don't work: left-click or middle click on the desktop. any click on the upper left icon in the frame around windows. Right click on desktop brings new/arrange icons/... menu. I can grab and move windows around, click on the window control buttons in the upper right of the window frame, select menu items, I'm not sure how long this has been going on; I think it's been awhile (at least a couple of weeks). All of the non working clicks used to work for me. (Clicking on the background got me an X program menu or a list of things like windows or programs I could select; clicking on the window control got me some sawfish commands. Or at least, that is what I thought I was seeing before.) Can anyone suggest where to look for the problem, or for a fix? Thanks.

glimpse install
Hi list I recently installed glimpse, and it asked me if it should index my manpage-directories and run this task as a cron-job. I answered no because I had work to do, and the searching, decrompressing, indexing... procedure would have annoyed me that time. Now I'd like to do run this index, but neither dpkg-reconfigure glimpse nor apt-get remove --purge and apt-get install it again asks me this question. Now, how can I start indexing, and the cron job without confusing apt, dpkg, and myself? thanks, joerg -- Did you know that if you play a Windows 2000 cd backwards, you will hear the voice of Satan? unpredictable crashes, lock up, freezes, whatever
Dear all, I'm running mostly testing with some unstable under linux 2.2.19 (hand rolled, of course) on an IBM ThinkPad i1476 (Type 2611). Since a few weeks, my machine completely locks up at unpredictable moments. The screen is no longer updated, I can't switch to a virtual terminal, even the three finger salute doesn't do a thing. Pinging from another machine results in 100% lost packets but the PCMCIA network card keeps signalling traffic. Just about the only thing that keeps on going is CD audio. I regularly 'apt-get -t testing upgrade' and the problem hasn't gone away. I've tried other kernels, including the Debian vanilla ones, but to no avail. I've run memtest86 and found errors in one of my DIMMs but the problem remains even after lobotomy. That is, even when I only use the DIMM that is okay (memtest86, 20+ passes, tests 1-7) my machine randomly locks up. I've checked the logs but apart from occasional blocks of nulls just before a lock up, I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. Note, those null blocks only appear before _some_ lock ups, not all. Because I haven't experienced any lock up when using the console, I'm wondering if my graphics card (probed as Neomagic NM2200 according to XFree86 log, NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV according to hardware spec) has gone bad. Are there any tools a la memtest to test my graphics card? Before you suggest, I have already tried both Gnome (with several window managers) and KDE. It doesn't matter. The machine even locks up when running (x|k)screensaver during lunch :-( If you have other ideas as to what could be the matter, I'm open to suggestions. Please Cc:, I'm not subscribed (because of the volume). TIA, -- Olaf Meeuwissen Epson Kowa Corporation, Research and Development Free Software: `No walls, no windows! No fences, no gates!'

Re: I simply don't understand
Hi, I'M VERY SORRY TO BOTHER YOU! As a matter of fact the 'poor' gnuhtml2tex package is responsible of nothing. In fact, when I installed it all was ok. Later on, while rebooting the system, a hard-disk error popped up (before mounting the filesystem) halting the PC irremediably; rebooting again, debian, shifting to single user, warned that the filesystem had to be fsck'ed. I did it so answering 'yes' to the many requests of fixing the corrupted clusters. This is the reason why in the messed up /etc/motd (many thanks to Aquila who privately gave me the right hint!) I now find this strange message. Now my question is: Where, in what package can I find the correct /etc/motd file? It is still in alpha/beta stage, and not all Windows software packages run under Wine yet. Probably popular software like microsoft Office will run under wine. Advantages: a) Open source, free, b) Windows itself is not needed c) Economical on resources. Disadvantage: Still in pre-release stadium. Not all Windows applications can run under Wine. I tried Wine, but it cannot yet run the software that is important for me (ACT, NeuroModel). 2) VMware (www.VMware.com) implements virtual Intel computers within a computer running Linux or Windows. Disadvantages: a) Not open-source, b) very resource-hungry, c) costs money, d) Microsoft Windows Installation kit is necessary and must be installed in the virtual machine. I tried VMWare and found that it worked well, but that it was too resource-hungy for me. 3) Win4Lin (www.win4lin.com) enables to run Windows 95 or 98 within Linux. Advantages: a) Seems to work very well, b) Much more economical on resources than VMware is. Disadvantages: a) Not open-source, costs money, b) Does not explicitly support Debian (but the help-desk is very helpful in solving Debian related problems), c) There is a need to patch and recompile the kernel, d) Microsoft Windows Installation kit is necessary and must be installed. In short, yes linuxconf is in the stable distribution but you should edit those files by hand. At least look at what linuxconf does to those files but I find that I don't really understand something untill I can edit the config file and make it do what I want. With tools like linux conf your stuck only being able to do what someone else thinks you want to do. run: #apt-cache search linuxconf it sould show you a few packages that pertain to linuxconf. Then you can run: #apt-cache show package-name and get all sorts of info about the package. All the other people on the calls B shouldn't be trying to find your MAC address as they theoretically should only be talking to your service providers DSLAM. Actually it does matter. To keep from having this trash a network the router really needs to have enough cache entries to store all hosts on the network. Many routers just can't handle that for a class B network. They really should break their network up into class Cs. It sounds like somebody has screwed up at the service provider configuring their routers they have probably:- i) Configured a really small arp cache timeout value so the service provider router is permanatly having to re arp for the mac addresses of all the DSL modems or ii) Configured a static route via a broadcast interface (eg etherent) on the cental router. This is a really bad thing as instead of just arping for the next hop address the router will arp every time it needs to send a packet to any address on the network the route is for to try and determine the gateway to that address. Video shutdown instead of xscreensaver
Please CC reply copies as I'm not a subscriber of this list. Hi, When I don't move the mouse or type for some minutes, xscreensaver runs. How can I change this? I'd like that my monitor turns off or enter in sleep mode instead of xscreensaver. Is there some How-To where I can find some hints? Thanks in advance, Pedro

Re: fetchmail question
Hi Alex, I've no solution for your problem but I remember that fetchmailconf provides an option to leave messages on server (on a per account basis). Perahps you sdhould try to generate a pseudo config with it just to see what you can add. I use also two email addresses but I really use only one because I've not yet manage to automatically select the sender ID. I mean, I would like with one mail reader (balsa, mutt, ...) to send a mail to a mailing list with my second address but to a friend with my first address. I think about rules (similar to procmail's one) to said send mail to this address with this sender mail address, ... My purpose is differant than yours, I use somtimes a IMP to remotely consult my box but the mailing list traffic make this difficult. So I use two distincts addresses, the primary one is easily consultable. I imagine this is possible with sendmail but the sendmail configuration is really difficult. So I use exim but I believe this kind of config is not possible with it. I seperated them because I was getting 400+ mails per day due to mailing lists, and I now own a laptop, which only needs to access personal mail. When I used a single-user setup of fetchmail, I just typed fetchmail -k but I don't know how to tell the fetchmail daemon to do so. Can anybody help? Alex -- Alex Suzuki ..:.. Re: getting mad!
Hi, I haven't been following this closely, so my appologies if this isn't relevent. I remeber when setting up tftp for our routers, we had a problem because tftp won't create files so we had to touch /tftp/foo before we could download foo. non-modular kernel, multi E/N card recognition
Hello: I have encountered a problem with the recognition of 2 Ethernet cards when using a non-modular kernel. The specifics are as follows: kernel 2.4.2 (with console = tty and lance ethernet enabled) 2 Lance (ISA) E/N cards jumpered to 0x300 and 0x320 respectively system is '386, 8 MB, no graphics, keyboard or mouse: uses vt101 as a console I tried the following append statements in the lilo.conf file, kernel section, but only the card at 0x300 is identified: append = io=0x300,0x320 console=ttyS0,4800E7 append = io=0x300 io=0x320 console=ttyS0,4800E7 append = io=0x320 io=0x300 console=ttyS0,4800E7 append = io=0x300,0x320 (with append = console=ttyS0,4800E7 in the global section) Note that a modular kernel 2.2.13, with the line options lance io=0x300,0x320 in the /etc/modules.conf file DOES recognise both cards at boot time. The newer kernel is needed (I believe) because I want the '386 as a firewall between my LAN and the ADSL modem to the world. I cannot get dhcpcd that came with the earlier Debian release (currently on the '386) to make a connection, so want dhcp-client, plus iptables for packet filtering. If you have any experience with a similar environment, or have any insight into solving my problem at all, I would very much like to hear from you. Regards from frustrated in Calgary, Dean Provins

kernel 2.4 and cs4232 [semi-urgent]
Hi, Sound, my personal blind spot... When I upgraded to kernel 2.4.x some time ago I lost sound, and haven't been able to get it back on two out of three machines. We have a bunch of demos monday and it would be nice to put something flashy on the kiosk system (which is one of the sound less ones). This used to work, with 2.2.18 and still does on one 2.4.2 system: modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 now I get init_module: No such device, all systems running unstable. sndconfig doesn't seem to deal with 2.4 kernels (complains about sound_core missing, I wonder if I can alias that away...)
