 1) # echo 1 /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
 2) /sbin/ipchains -A forward -s (ip-segundoordenador)/32 -d 0.0.0.0/0 -j MASQ
 route add default gw (ip-primerordenador)
 4) Instala el bind tal que:
 apt-get install bind

kernel-headers y kernel-source

2001-07-26 Thread Andres Seco Hernandez
Hola

Estoy usando ahora potato 2.2r3.

Primero, para alcararme, 2.2.19pre17 es posterior a 2.2.19 ¿no?

Segundo, hay dos paquetes kernel-source de la 2.2.19:

kernel-source-2.2.19
kernel-source-2.2.19pre17

pero hay bastantes más headers:

kernel-headers-2.2.19pre17-compact
kernel-headers-2.2.19pre17-idepci
kernel-headers-2.2.19-compact
kernel-headers-2.2.19-idepci
kernel-headers-2.2.19-ide
kernel-headers-2.2.19
kernel-headers-2.2.19-sparc

Desventajas:
   - No lo puedes hacer con apt-get.

No, el orden es 2.2.18, 2.2.19pre1, 2.2.19pre2, ... 2.2.19.

Mmmm.

kernel-package.

hola

si no te fias del ps, intenta

/etc/init.d/lpd start

lp|remote-smbprinter:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/null:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:if=/usr/local/sbin/smbprint:

#!/bin/sh
/etc/magicfilter/ljet4m-filter | smbclient //server/hp4 PASSWORD -P \
-U USER -c print - /dev/null

Y setserial /dev/ttyS1 me dan 0x2f8 IRQ 4, correspondientes

He tenido diversos problemas para
Cabe aclarar que aunque he

He usado un

Siempre me dice
que param_io o param_irq equivocados, aun cuando estoy seguro son los
valores correctos, e inclusive intentando todas las combinaciones
  posibles.

  Alguna idea?

ususarios.

Muchas gracias.

Yo, mi, me, conmigo.. me contesto:

Instalé lpr, luego lprng, luego desinstale lprng (porque me dio problemas
para imprirmir texto plano) y volví a instalar lpr. Desde entonces no he
podido imprimir.

compiler y desarrollar (o recompilar) tus propias

2001-07-26 Thread Mateus I. Trevisan

muitas vezes acabam espantando.
junto, bemvindas? hehe). ;)

Hmm... eu estou interessado.

debian: Recommendation for scanner/printer/fax/copier

2001-07-26 Thread Brendan J Simon

Hi,
I'm running an Apple Titanium G4 and an Intel Pentium-II machine (both
with Debian ofcourse). I would like to purchase a scanner but would
also like to be able to do photocopies. I could use a computer to scan
then print but that can be a bit inefficient. I was thinking of an all
in one unit that HP, Cannon or maybe Brother produce. Are there any
recommendations from other Linux users.

I would prefer a Laser printing engine but they seem harder to come by.
I would also prefer a printer with inbuilt postscript (I always have
seem to have problems with ghostscript). I think USB is the way to go
though an ethernet connection would be even better.

If there is nothing suitable then recommendations on individual products
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If my box would take mail for non-existent accounts it would have to
bounce them to the envelope-from, not some [EMAIL PROTECTED].

That has nothing to do with ident. Take one of my mails to debian-user
 as example:

 for debian-user@lists.debian.org; Thu, 26 Jul 2001 01:24:38 +0200

The only source of mails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
 [EMAIL PROTECTED] are spammers, but
such clueless ones usually also try to send mails to the message-id...

But of course sendmail does the right thing (it´s not exchange or
bloatus notes), it never even stores mails to unknown accounts, it
just issues a 5xx (no such luser) in the smtp-conversation and that´s
 it.

A few lines down you should see something like:
cpu MHz : 199.906

That should give you the speed. and you already know (from above) the
model.

Failing that the messages generated at boot are available in dmesg
ie
dmesg|egrep 'Detected.*MHz processor'
Detected 199.906 MHz processor.

I don't have access to any alphas but the above holds true for spark.

A Short Rant / FAQ on the Subject of
Signed E-Mail and Public Key Infrastructure

 Karsten M. Self kmself@ix.netcom.com

I use a combination of tools in my email to create messages which are
cryptographically signed in such a way that it is readily possible for
the recipient to gain a good level of assurance that the message:

  - Originates from me.
  - Hasn't been modified in any way en route.

This is sometimes called a digital signature (a technical term, not to
be confused with the recently passed US legislation on electronic
signatures, regarding legal contractual powers associated with various,
and largely very weak, methods of inserting corporate hands into your
wallet). The system under which it operates is known as public key
infrastructure, and is based on public key encryption. You're probably
going to start hearing a whole lot about this over the next year or so.

That's the long description.

The short story is that there's a way for me to keep half a secret and
spread the other half to the world in such a way that you can tell if a
particular message came from my half of the secret. It's pretty cool.

The other part:

You're responsible for determining whether or not a communication that
purports to come from me is in fact from me. And if I didn't sign it,
it almost certainly didn't. If the message *is* signed, it's still your
obligation to verify the signature itself.

You're probably reading this because you either stumbled across it at my
website, or I sent it to you in response to an email you sent me saying
you can't read my mail. In the latter case, the short answer is that:

  - Your mailer is broken.

  - This is your problem, not mine.

  - File a bug report with your vendor.

  - I'm going to continue signing my mail, and if you don't change your
end of things, you're going to continue having problems reading it.

  - No, this isn't a virus, a bomb, a bug, a worm, or any other
executable code.

  - If your IT or MIS department is brain-dead enough to actually strip
off these attachments before you get your mail, I'm going to laugh
at you in public. Sorry, this ain't the sympathy department.
There's a nice rant below about why this is such a pathetic action,
though, you might enjoy reading it.

The long answer is the rest of this document.

There's an Internet standard, called a request for comments, or RFC,
which covers MIME encoded encryption and signatures. This is RFC 2015
(more info below under Resources).
While it is still a draft standard, it is widely supported on multiple
platforms. There are some pieces of Internet mail plumbing which break
the protocol -- multiple mail clients (email applications to you), as
well as some server applications. LISTSERV and beromail are two I'm
aware of -- but compatibility modes are frequently available for such
software, and in many cases, support is planned in future upgrades. But
that's another story.

If you're interested in the gory technical details, read on. You should
be able to save my email as a text file and open it in a simple editor
(e.g.: Notepad or Write under Legacy MS Windows). You'll find that the
message body content type of my messages is expressed as:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Disposition: inline
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

...which should be handled properly as inline plain-text content. If
your mailer doens't present the message body in this format, you should
report a bug to the program maintainer or vendor.

The signature is presented as:

Content-Type: application/pgp-signature
Content-Disposition: inline

For an intelligent mailer, this should be interpreted, rather than
presented, and used to validate the message content itself. Otherwise,
the content can be presented or concealed, at the user's preference.

You might ask why I insist on signing my mail. Fair question.

Part of the reason

Hi, I just tried to install Deb on a new PC, but I can't complete the
  install, somehow. Here's what happens.

  - I started the install with Deb 2.2r3's boot floppy (well actually
the first cd) and then changed my /etc/apt/sources.list to point
to an ftp server with unstable instead of stable.

  - It downloads the packages OK. Now the fun starts...

One the first packages it tries to install is
libc6_2.2.3-7_i386.deb, to replace the one from the CD (which is
  2.1.3-18).

  Here's what I get:

  ---
  Preparing to replace libc6 2.1.3-18 (using .../libc6_2.2.3-7_i386.deb) ...
  cp: invalid option -- L
Try 'cp --help' for more information.

  (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
  ---

Sorry if this seems long, I thought that putting the whole message might
  help people.

I went throught the /var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6.* to find any mentions of
  cp -L without finding anything.

My system is now stuck half-installed as I cannot continue (libc6 being
important as it is for other packages).

Anyone knows where to go from there ? Thanks

Upgrade to 'testing' first, then 'unstable'. You can't make it
directly from potato to unstable. (The testing version has the cp
version with -L, but potato cp does not.) Below is the procedure that
worked for me when I got hung up by the same problem.

Hmm...if this is true, there is a bug, and the current 'unstable'
package's installation procedure for libc6_2 needs to be fixed so that
it doesn't rely on the '-L' flag, or other issues identified and fixed.
At some point, the process will be to upgrade from potato to unstable
directly.

I'm also not sure that the '-L' flag doesn't exist in earlier versions
of ls -- I have it on both my 'testing' and 'unstable' systems. Data,
anyone?

Hmm...Freezes your machine? Odd.

My first advice is to find a different browser. Netscape simply sucks,
and has for years. There's been some mild improvement of late, but it's
far past time to bury the beast. Try Galeon, Konqueror, or Mozilla, or
take a look at other recommendations at

http://kmself.home.netcom.com/Linux/FAQs/browsers.html

i cannot do anything but switch off and let fsck do its magic.

Why don't you describe what else you've tried, e.g.:

  - Window-manager actions on the window.
  - ctrlaltFn, where 'Fn' is one of the function keys 1-6, to
switch to another virtual terminal.
  - ctrlaltbackspace, to shut down X.
  - Magic-Alt-Sysrq kernel signals.
  - Remotely access your system from another box, via network.
  - Access your box via serial console (a Palm Pilot will do in a pinch,
with appropriate terminal emulo software).

It might also be helpful for you to specify:

  - Your video card.
  - Your window manager.
  - Any appropriate log messages from:
 /var/log/XFree86.n.log
 /var/log/messages
 /var/log/syslog
 ...other X output.

has anyone of you experienced this also?

Hard lockups due to apps are rare. Lockups due to video/X problems are
not uncommon. It's also possible that there are other problems you're
overlooking, which may become apparent by more careful perusal of system
logs (they're there for a reason).

I agree that Python, Perl, Ruby et all are all fine and dandy languages.
But I don't think that is what the original poster of the question
asked (see the subject line).

There are many good pointers to sites and books to learn or perfect
your C++ skills. I don't know of any mailing list for beginning C++
users, but I would recommend following these news groups:
comp.lang.c++.moderated and comp.std.c++. Some of the posts might be
difficult for beginning C++ users, but hey: live and learn !

Posting your question in those newsgroups again maybe gives you more
accurate pointers.

Take time to learn C++ well, and you sure will never regret it!

Disk change detected on device

2001-07-26 Thread M . PITZL
Hello,

I am getting this message from time to time on my server:
kernel: VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1(22,0)
kernel: VFS: Disk change detected on device fd(2,0)
But i am sure that there are no disks neither inside the floppy nor inside
the cdrom.
No one is working locally on this machine.
Also i get a modprobe: can't locate module block-major-3-message in my
logs.
I have no idea why this messages appear.
About the system:
-Pentium II 266 MHz
-64 MB RAM
-Intel 82557 Network adapter
-Compaq Netflex 3 network adapter
-3Com 3C905B 100bTx network adapter
-Adaptec AIC7881-U
-SCSI-Disk
-Matrox Millenium graphics adapter
-MATSHITA CR-583 CD-ROM

Has anyone an idea, whats wrong here?
The system runs very well, but these messages seems a bit strange to me
because i am sure, no one is using the floppy and/or the cdrom.
Thanks a lot!

Regards,
Matthias

Ok,

freeze means that the machine don't react to ANYTHING, not even to:
- Ctrl-Alt-Fn
- Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
- login via telnet or serial line
- Ctrl-Alt-Del

Even a active telnet session from another host to that machine freezes so i
have to kill it on that host. I didn't say freeze for no reason. Simply turning
off a Linux box is something even I consider the last of all possible solutions!

The logfiles dont give me hints either, at least the 'popular' ones 'syslog'
and 'messages' (which are especially hard to view on a frozen machine so i
redirected them to another host).

My video card is a noname but it has a S3-Virge on it (dont know the name of
the controller right now) and 2MB of ram. I know that that's not much, but I
dont have the money for a 32MB card right now.

I guess I mentioned that I use icewm for my window-manager?

Unfortunatelly, I've also tried another browser, namely Opera5.0. It also
freezes (surprise surprise) in the same way that Netscape4.76 does.

Ah yeah, Lynx works.

Hope that helps

reliable, and doesn't like Memorex and other common brands of CD-R

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a Philips CDRW800 and found that it would only burn a CD one time in
around 8. Most annoying. I kept getting error messages to do with power
calibration.

I sold this drive and decided to go with a genuine SCSI CDRW - a suitable
SCSI card costs very little, I have the Iwill SIDE-2930C which is fully
supported by Linux. I bought a Yamaha 2100S, a 16x10x40 SCSI drive. I know
you asked about IDE drives, but SCSI is certainly worth thinking about -
you will find it altogether more reliable. I have a scanner and the CDRW
plugged into my SCSI card.

Initially, I found that I could only burn one CD, then all I got with
subsequent burns was a loud, continuous static-like noise, unless I
rebooted. I discovered that the drive didn't like cdrecord under Linux,
but preferred cdrdao. Using cdrdao I now have a 100% reliable CDRW which
writes to absolutely *anything*! I have tried the cheapest CDR disks I
could find and still get good results. I use Gtoaster as the GUI front-end
to cdrdao and grip as a ripper to ensure that when I record an audio CD I
get a perfect copy.

PCTel Modem vs. Debian 2.2r3

2001-07-26 Thread Vitor Silva Souza

Hello users (and hopefully developers) of Debian,

For the last couple of weeks I've been unsuccessfully trying to connect to
the Internet on my Debian 2.2r3 (potato) distribution, running kernel
2.2.19pre17, using a PCTel modem. For those who don't have the time to read
big messages, I'll go straight to the point:

	1) If anyone managed to connect a PCTel HSP56 PCI Micromodem to the
Internet on a Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r3, please write a mini-HOWTO. I'm not
the only one struggling with this.

	2) Developers: I think what happens is that pppd sets off a kernel bug
when trying to connect to an ISP (I was told that from /var/log/messages
analysis). I don't know if it's the kernel's fault, or if it's PCTel
module's fault (it is a 2.2.18 precompiled module), but I thought I should
say this so you guys would decide if it's something worth taking a deeper look.

Sending this message is my last act of hope. I'm already considering
buying a real modem, something I should have done since the very beginning.

Things I've already tried:
- PCTel's module (link available from Rob Clark's site and
Linmodems.org)
- Jan Stifter's module
(http://www.medres.ch/~jstifter/linux/pctel.html)
- Configuring with pppconfig and calling pon/poff.
- Installing ppp and wvdial package and using wvdial.
- Sean Walbran Marvin Stodolsky's Linmodem-HOWTO
- Searching the web (found many mailing list archives about
this)
- etc (don't remember right now)...

I read that PCTel used to work on Debian 2.1, but doesn't on 2.2. Some
user updated his Debian distro and pppd started crashing. If anyone knows
*exactly* what to do, or want to exchange ideas, please email me.

Thanks,

hi

the lilo and the old lilofile (which worked pretty good) are attachements now.
maybe i forgetz an important scsi thing to set on in the kernel?
or maybe it was the wrong scsi driver, i dont know.
NCR 53c875 (rev 38) is my scsi chip on a pci card.

markus

 hi ya markus...

easiest way to get around the lilo problem...
 - boot your server with a different media ( floppy or cdrom )
 - make a boot floppy
 # dd if=/vmlinuz of=/dev/fd0 bs=1024 )
 # rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/sda1
   ( if your /vmlinuz is on /dev/sda1 )
 if it boots...good

 - probably wont work...since you're booting off sda1
( you might need to get initrd on it too )

 - make sure your kernel ( /vmlinuz) supports your scsi disk
( you'll get kernel panic if it cant find / on your system
( in which case you're 1/2 way there

 - otherwise... dig into your large-disk howto
 - see if the BIOS recognizes your disk on bios boot

 - see if you have to set the large disk jumper for your hardisk
 - probably need a jumper on your disk

 - what is the rest of your lilo.conf file???
 - do you have initrd=... ??? ( you need it for booting from sda1 )
 - do you have lba32 ???
 - do you have linear ??
 - add each option and rerun lilo and see if it helps booting

innie...meanie...my knee moe pick one and start playing...

 have fun

Thanks you all, lack of thinking on my part. I'm in a lab, and I assumed the PC
next to me (PIII 450) would be the same as the one I'm one. And that's why

cpu MHz : 551.264

Didn't look right. Turns out there IS a good reason to reboot Linux now and
again.

Now I can finish my asset reporting bootdisk.

Re: C programming: Segmentation fault within malloc?

2001-07-26 Thread Shaul Karl
Have you tried to look at the value sizeof(struct node)? It might be too big.
Otherwise, can you show us the backtrace in gdb.

gdb says sizeof(struct node) == 20. It is mostly a couple of pointers:

 struct node {
enum colors   color;
struct node  *left, *right, *parent;
void *data;
};

Breakpoint 1, insert_symbol (sym=0xbfffe25c) at symbols.c:197
197 if (!((node = (struct node *)malloc(sizeof(struct node)))
(gdb) p sizeof(struct node)
$1 = 20
(gdb) c
Continuing.

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

#8 0x4005b2db in __libc_start_main () from /lib/libc.so.6
(gdb)

I believe that malloc is called twice here due to line 198:

if (!((node = (struct node *)malloc(sizeof(struct node)))
  (node-data = malloc(sizeof(struct symbol) {

and sizeof(struct symbol) is 52.
