;) -- Mateus Inacio Trevisan (rato) Debian GNU/Linux: when code matters more than commercials. debian: Recommendation for scanner/printer/fax/copier
Hi, I'm running an Apple Titanium G4 and an Intel Pentium-II machine (both with Debian ofcourse). I would like to purchase a scanner but would also like to be able to do photocopies. I could use a computer to scan then print but that can be a bit inefficient. I was thinking of an all in one unit that HP, Cannon or maybe Brother produce. Are there any recommendations from other Linux users. I would prefer a Laser printing engine but they seem harder to come by. I would also prefer a printer with inbuilt postscript (I always have seem to have problems with ghostscript). I think USB is the way to go though an ethernet connection would be even better. If there is nothing suitable then recommendations on individual products would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brendan Simon.

There is no K5 cabal http://gestalt-system.sourceforge.net/ http://www.kuro5hin.org Are these opinions my employer's? Hah! I don't believe them myself! A Short Rant / FAQ on the Subject of Signed E-Mail and Public Key Infrastructure Karsten M. Self kmself@ix.netcom.com I use a combination of tools in my email to create messages which are cryptographically signed in such a way that it is readily possible for the recipient to gain a good level of assurance that the message: - Originates from me. - Hasn't been modified in any way en route. This is sometimes called a digital signature (a technical term, not to be confused with the recently passed US legislation on electronic signatures, regarding legal contractual powers associated with various, and largely very weak, methods of inserting corporate hands into your wallet). The system under which it operates is known as public key infrastructure, and is based on public key encryption. You're probably going to start hearing a whole lot about this over the next year or so. That's the long description. The short story is that there's a way for me to keep half a secret and spread the other half to the world in such a way that you can tell if a particular message came from my half of the secret. It's pretty cool. The other part: You're responsible for determining whether or not a communication that purports to come from me is in fact from me. And if I didn't sign it, it almost certainly didn't. If the message *is* signed, it's still your obligation to verify the signature itself. You're probably reading this because you either stumbled across it at my website, or I sent it to you in response to an email you sent me saying you can't read my mail. In the latter case, the short answer is that: - Your mailer is broken. - This is your problem, not mine. - File a bug report with your vendor. - I'm going to continue signing my mail, and if you don't change your end of things, you're going to continue having problems reading it. - No, this isn't a virus, a bomb, a bug, a worm, or any other executable code. - If your IT or MIS department is brain-dead enough to actually strip off these attachments before you get your mail, I'm going to laugh at you in public. Sorry, this ain't the sympathy department. There's a nice rant below about why this is such a pathetic action, though, you might enjoy reading it. The long answer is the rest of this document. There's an Internet standard, called a request for comments, or RFC, which covers MIME encoded encryption and signatures. This is RFC 2015 (more info below under Resources). While it is still a draft standard, it is widely supported on multiple platforms. There are some pieces of Internet mail plumbing which break the protocol -- multiple mail clients (email applications to you), as well as some server applications. LISTSERV and beromail are two I'm aware of -- but compatibility modes are frequently available for such software, and in many cases, support is planned in future upgrades. But that's another story. If you're interested in the gory technical details, read on. You should be able to save my email as a text file and open it in a simple editor (e.g.: Notepad or Write under Legacy MS Windows). You'll find that the message body content type of my messages is expressed as: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable ...which should be handled properly as inline plain-text content. If your mailer doens't present the message body in this format, you should report a bug to the program maintainer or vendor. The signature is presented as: Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Disposition: inline For an intelligent mailer, this should be interpreted, rather than presented, and used to validate the message content itself. Otherwise, the content can be presented or concealed, at the user's preference. You might ask why I insist on signing my mail. Fair question. Part of the reason

Below is the procedure that worked for me when I got hung up by the same problem. Promise IDE ATA-100 controller on ASUS A7V133
Hi,I have an ASUS A7V133 with PDC20265 on-board IDE as well as the standardon-board VIA controller. I am trying to install Debian potato 2.2r3. Ineed to get it to install from the on-board Promise IDE controller. I triedusing the boot: parameter with these parameters, which I retrieved fromWindows 98 device manager resources:boot: linux ide2=0xA000, 0x9802 ide3=0x9400, 0x9002but this didn't work. When it reached the first few screens in the Debianinstalled it said that I didn't have any valid devices to install to.I went to a shell and looked at /proc/pci. I looked fine as far as I know.It showed an "unknown mass storage device" and said "unknown promisedevice". It also had the same addresses which I gave above as the bootparameter. Is there anything else I need to do? I usedhttp://www.geocities.com/ender7007/ as a guide. But I need more help. Doesanyone know what I can do?Thanks,David Grant Please cc: to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I am not subscribed to list. Thanks a lot.

It might also be helpful for you to specify: - Your video card. - Your window manager. - Any appropriate log messages from: /var/log/XFree86.n.log /var/log/messages /var/log/syslog ...other X output. has anyone of you experienced this also? Hard lockups due to apps are rare. Lockups due to video/X problems are not uncommon. The Ricoh in my Win98 box isn't that reliable, and doesn't like Memorex and other common brands of CD-R blanks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. I had a Philips CDRW800 and found that it would only burn a CD one time in around 8. Most annoying. I kept getting error messages to do with power calibration. I sold this drive and decided to go with a genuine SCSI CDRW - a suitable SCSI card costs very little, I have the Iwill SIDE-2930C which is fully supported by Linux. I bought a Yamaha 2100S, a 16x10x40 SCSI drive. I know you asked about IDE drives, but SCSI is certainly worth thinking about - you will find it altogether more reliable. I have a scanner and the CDRW plugged into my SCSI card. Initially, I found that I could only burn one CD, then all I got with subsequent burns was a loud, continuous static-like noise, unless I rebooted. I discovered that the drive didn't like cdrecord under Linux, but preferred cdrdao. Using cdrdao I now have a 100% reliable CDRW which writes to absolutely *anything*! I have tried the cheapest CDR disks I could find and still get good results. I use Gtoaster as the GUI front-end to cdrdao and grip as a ripper to ensure that when I record an audio CD I get a perfect copy. -- Phillip Deackes Using Progeny Debian Linux
PCTel Modem vs. Debian 2.2r3
Hello users (and hopefully developers) of Debian, For the last couple of weeks I've been unsuccessfully trying to connect to the Internet on my Debian 2.2r3 (potato) distribution, running kernel 2.2.19pre17, using a PCTel modem. For those who don't have the time to read big messages, I'll go straight to the point: 1) If anyone managed to connect a PCTel HSP56 PCI Micromodem to the Internet on a Debian GNU/Linux 2.2r3, please write a mini-HOWTO. I'm not the only one struggling with this. 2) Developers: I think what happens is that pppd sets off a kernel bug when trying to connect to an ISP (I was told that from /var/log/messages analysis). I don't know if it's the kernel's fault, or if it's PCTel module's fault (it is a 2.2.18 precompiled module), but I thought I should say this so you guys would decide if it's something worth taking a deeper look. Sending this message is my last act of hope. I'm already considering buying a real modem, something I should have done since the very beginning. Things I've already tried: - PCTel's module (link available from Rob Clark's site and Linmodems.org) - Jan Stifter's module (http://www.medres.ch/~jstifter/linux/pctel.html) - Configuring with pppconfig and calling pon/poff. - Installing ppp and wvdial package and using wvdial. - Sean Walbran Marvin Stodolsky's Linmodem-HOWTO - Searching the web (found many mailing list archives about this) - etc (don't remember right now)... I read that PCTel used to work on Debian 2.1, but doesn't on 2.2. Some user updated his Debian distro and pppd started crashing. If anyone knows *exactly* what to do, or want to exchange ideas, please email me. Thanks, __ Vítor Estêvão Silva Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED]
