Yeah thats not the problem I think.. there are no extra characters or
whitespace anywhere..

Yeah the passwords for the admin and the oper are fine and I can log
in. Its just the source that cant connect and I have no idea why. I
think its a problem with the source tho cause everything else works
just fine. (Oddcast plugin for Winamp on Windows).
That source works just fine for icecast2 on windows.. I think it may
have trouble with encrypted passwords..

installing a printer

2002-10-28 Thread Sandip P Deshmukh
hello all!

this is a question that comes from a windows user shifting to linux.

i have debian 3.0 installed, up and running.

i recently have attached an hp710c printer to the lpt1 port. and i do
not have any set-up cds, floppies, etc.

windows way of 'installing' the printer would be to add printer in
printer folder and so on.

how do i do it in linux? is there a simple way of doing it?

and how do i 'install' networed printers? printers connected to our lan
that runs on winnt?

can i choose default printer, etc like i used to do in windows?

thanx in advance

fetchmail or exim - what is failing?

2002-10-28 Thread Sandip P Deshmukh

hello all

so far, i have set up exim properly. it is able to send messages. i also
used fetchmailconf and it created a .fetchmailrc file in ~. i have
checked and there is no .procmailrc or .forward file in ~.

.fetchmailrc:

set properties ""
set daemon 5

user 'deshmukh' there with password 'xxx' is 'deshmukh' here

etc.

now, here is output of fetchmail -c:

5 messages for deshmukh at 192.168.100.1 (17323 octets).
etc.

now, at this time, /var/log/exim/mainlog does not contain any
information regarding fetchmail's attempts. i wonder how does fetchmail
-c not get logged in /var/log/exim/mainlog

now, finally, hoping that fetchmail will get the messages for me, i ran

Regarding euro support install the euro-support packages and read the

It means fetchmail got your message, delivered it locally and flushed
your POP mailbox (I think that means it deleted the message on the

where will this message go?? i thought fetchmail will get it in
/var/mail/sandip!!

   Sandip> my /var/mail/sandip is 0 bytes

I hope you don't have a .procmailrc or .forward file.

i checked in ~. there are none of the two files present! i am just
starting out. still some time before i have .forward or .procmailrc ;)

Also, be sure you have something like

user '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' there ... is sandip here

in your fetchmailrc config file.

it does have such entries. i forgot to mention, but i had used
fetchmailconf utility to create .fetchmailrc file

Look at that config file very
carefully (the -d0 flag you used kind of concerns me).

well, i read up man fetchmail. -d0 flag is for NOT running the fetchmail
in background. as i said, i was still testing it. so, i chose to use the
flag.

Can you match
each of those entries in the flog file with what you see being written
to /var/log/exim/mainlog? The exim log should tell you exactly where
the delivery went.

all right. this gives me some clue. will do a full run again and will be
back with results.

Like your exim set up, this *should* be working if you got the config
files set up ;-) Boy, I hope you enjoying this, because you could go
out and turn a lot off people off Debian otherwise!

well, it sure is letting me learn a lot and helping me keep young! i
still cant fathom, though, how is exim + pop3browser + fetchmail +
procmail + mua a better solution than mua + 'rules' + smtp server setup!
and no worries on me turning people off debian. i am sure, those who can
think, will like to be on debian - not off it!

Cheers!

Assuming it's XMMS. I had this problem for a bit. Apparently the xmms-cdread
isn't grabbed as a dependency, which is fine if you're not using it for cds.
It's not going to show anything in the /cdrom directory without that package
installed though. I was pulling hair over this for a while before I figured
it out. I have since moved on to trying to get it to play any sound at all
now. XMMS will see the CD, list the directory and play them, but I got 0
sound. And I have the xmms-artsplay package in also. Seems strange to get the
system sounds but not audio sounds. I'm using cdparanoia to copy them to the
hd before playing, but it sucks to have to wait the 15-20 mins or whatever to
get it to the hd before I can listen to my cd:(

P.S. Sorry to piggy-back that last problem with one of my own, but I figured
it saved some space:)

I think most of the country code named sites (ftp.us.d.o, http.us.d.o,
etc.) are actually round-robin DNS setups, so the load is fairly
distributed already. Occasionally I get an out of sync mirror, but
reupdating gets me another mirror, and the second one usually works just
fine.

You don't really need to 'configure' the card - it's PCI, so most of
that's done for you. That said, I have an emu10k1 card, and I use a
file, /etc/modutils/aliases.emu10k1, that contains:

alias char-major-14 emu10k1
alias sound-slot-1 emu10k1
alias sound-slot-2 emu10k1
alias sound-slot-3 emu10k1
alias sound-service-1-0 emu10k1
alias sound-service-2-3 emu10k1
alias sound-service-3-3 emu10k1

These are the various extra parts of the card (rear speakers, secondary
input, whatever). I don't remember whether there was a problem that led
me to do this, or if I did it from some howto online (this is the very
first debian/linux box I installed, so it has some, ahem, historical
quirks that it acquired going from slink to sarge).

yes. was a goof up on my part not to get it! i think i got confused

You could always have fetchmail dial out on demand if you don't mind
the phone bill. But if you don't have this, yes, I agree that
looking at headers might be nice. Use IMAP if you can.

use of imap will depend upon if the mail server is allowing that. most
of them offer pop3 connections and just a few offer imap. correct me if
i am wrong

While doing some admin box on a debian machine at work I found a
pop3browser package and the description matches what you want.

yes. thanx for pointing me to it. so, now my setup will be exim +
pop3browser + fetchmail + procmail? on windows it used to be *only*

Not really. You are assuming (1) you can determine a virus from
looking at headers

no. i am only saying that i will delete all headers if senders are not
known etc. not a 100% guarantee but some safety!

and (2) your MUA is so buggy that a virus will get
to it (welcome to Linux).

not only mua - the whole system! and while i agree chances of virus are

Not as far as I know. I have a laptop, and not using 'auto' works just
fine.

I would suggest experimenting with '/etc/init.d/networking stop' and
'/etc/init.d/networking start' to test your changes to the interfaces
file. When networking is started it uses the 'ifup -a' command, so
only those networks marked with the 'auto' tag should get
started. ifup uses /etc/networks/ifstate to determine what the network
state is, so perhaps that is where things are going wrong.

The behavior you are seeing is certainly abnormal. Perhaps the
suggestion above will help discover a little more. Sorry for the lame
help

You don't allow relaying for your computer. Using localhost (or
127.0.0.1) instead of 192.168.100.21 as your SMTP-server in mozilla
might fix it.

perfect, sir! if the list is getting this message, we are bang on the spot!

But you should take a look at everything related to "relay" in the
config file and the exim docs anyway to understand what this is about.

Hint: you probably allow relay for localhost but not for
192.168.100.21. Since you address the server not on its local address
but the one bound to its NIC (network interface card), the mail
doesn't seem to come from localhost (127.0.0.1).

Wayne,

Thanks so much for the help, and the rebuke for my poor attitude. I've
finally gotten Apache/MySQL/PHP combination working, thanks to you. This has
taken hours per night, for months and months - I messed with it through
Mandrake 6.0, Mandrake 8.0, and now Debian 3.0, and it still wouldn't work
(so I blamed Debian). I apologize for sometimes taking a newbie viewpoint of
expecting it to work like *magic*, but I really have hacked away at it, and
read innumerable pages, and instructions on how to do it. I do have user
intelligence, although I'm sure it wasn't apparent from my rant - if only you
knew the amount of time I spent labouring on this, and how little I
accomplished. It was a combination of extreme effort and overwhelming
desire/need to get this one simple thing working correctly, coupled with an
persistent and utter lack of results, that had me frustrated beyond words.
Numerous posts on several lists yielded no clues, and my final (final?) post
was one from a semi-crazed frame of mind.

I removed phpmyadmin, and things started working. I'd hosed it up beyond
recognition. You're absolutely right when you surmised that I had indeed
copied phpmyadmin install files directly into my /var/www/ directory, which
was A BAD THING to do, which was causing my library errors. You're also
absolutely right in deducing that I had indeed installed phpmyadmin and had
left that out of my rant - I didn't think it was a factor, and *neglected* to
mention it (newbie alert!).

I have no idea how you came so easily to your conclusions, other than you are
psychic, or have been looking over my shoulder while seated at my terminal.
It is amazing. I still maintain that I would never have gotten it working
had it not been for your help, and sharp rebuke in response to my whiney
post. Nothing on the web even vaguely offered any insight as to the pickle
I'd gotten myself into, and it would've been forever before I'd even begin to
"get a clue."

I've now installed DaDaBIK, , which is just what the
doctor ordered, to allow me to input and query MySQL via web interface. The
program is extremely easy, the default settings are even great, and it is
what I've been looking for, for a LONG LONG LONG time.

Again, sorry to the List for my rant, and for this ridiculously long post -
my only excuse is that my tortured mind finally snapped from the extreme,
mind-bending frustration - if it pleases the list, I'll enter a plea of not
guilty, by reason of temporary insanity.

Thanks Millions,

Chip

Coming late to this thread...

If that is the case then run:

  modconf

Select the emu10k1 driver.

It will try to isntall it and if that works will finish the setup for
you and you should have sound working.

Sorry about that, and thanks for the advice. I just used "reportbug" and
didn't see an appropriate choice given. I don't see install-doc under
www.debian.org/Bugs/pseudo-packages either. In this case is there somewhere

Well, you will have to investigate a little.

Is host_accept_relay set to "127.0.0.1 : 1"?

You will find a script at /etc/init.d/rcS. Haven't study
it, but I suppose it is responsible for looking in the
rc?.d directories and starting/stopping scripts in the

My initial description was rather vague. I have burned the first three
CDs and the Debian installer dutifully asks if I would like to read them
and index the available packages. It does this and puts the appropriate
entries for the CDs into /etc/apt/sources.list. The defect seems to be
with tasksel itself. After going through the menu and choosing a minimal
server configuration, I get prompted to mount CD #1 and hit return. Doing
so does nothing but loop at the same prompt. There was an instance during
one of my many install cycles where tasksel recognized that CD #1 was
mounted, but I was not able to duplicate the situation. Trying to load
Debian onto another identical server gave the same results.

Thanks, Don, for the research in turning up the necessary driver in the

least resistance. Much appreciated.

I have used sophos a lot in the past, I was not aware of a linux client
though.
I found it was a particularly fast av scanner when use to scan many small
files , such as on an email filtering box, like Mimesweeper. But I did not
like the update methods. Basically wget iirc.

As for Nortons/Symantec, I have to say I do recommend it for large MS based
enterprises, the deployment is a doddle, I have pushed out 1000s of clients
over a night time.

The tree like/cascading configuration for the update servers is also very
good, especially over slow wan links.

Cross platform, I can only say it was good for win98/NT/win2k and Netware,
not so hot for command line, good integration with outlook and Exchange.
Dreadful/non-existant deploy/management for Macs.

AV products are as much to do with upkeep and management as they are
catching virues.

I can't reccomend sophos enough. I've always hated symantec. I don't know
what it is about them that drives chills down my spine but I just can't
stand them.

Sophos is great because they support a diverse selection of platforms,
provide incremental(e.g. 10kb or so) updates, their upgrades are just plain
files, no "smart update" with binary patches to the virus defs like some
other vendors do, so updates are easy to deploy(extract the files..). for
Win32 they have an auto upgrade thing if you have a Win32 server you can
make a "server" install and install the client "versions" on the clients and
have them check for updates ever so often(default is every 10 minutes). When
an update is detected it removes & reinstalls the product automatically(with
or without user interaction depending on your preferences). It allows the

`gnome-approved' dark-background theme for gnome 2?

2002-10-28 Thread Miles Bader
Gnome 2.0 has hit unstable, and all my carefully crafted settings blew
up (it mumbled something about converting them, but the conversion
failed; it'd be nice if it told you why...).

I've now got things halfway-sane again, and the major remaining
irritation is the lack of any `dark' themes -- everything that shows up
in the Themes control-center widget* is some minor variation on `MS
Windows grey'.

When I try to use one my old dark themes that worked with gnome 1 (by
renaming the `gtk' subdir in the theme directory to `gtk-2.0'), they
usually only half-work, e.g., lots of text is displayed as
black-on-dark-grey or something similarly unreadable.

However, I don't know whether the problem lies with the them or with
buggy apps (I've encounted many apps before that use the wrong fg color,
which is only noticable if you've got a theme very different from the
default), so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a `dark' theme that's been
approved for use with gnome 2.0, or that at least works for somebody...

* I've got the following gtk2 theme engine packages installed:

i gtk2-engines-crux - GTK+2.0 Crux theme engine
i gtk2-engines-lighthouseblue - LighthouseBlue theme for GTK+ 2.0
i gtk2-engines-metal - Metallic theme for GTK+ 2.x
i gtk2-engines-mist - A flat theme for GTK+ 2.x
i gtk2-engines-pixbuf - Pixbuf-based theme for GTK+ 2.x
i gtk2-engines-thinice- ThinIce theme for GTK+ 2.0

Thanks,

-Miles

Actually, the CD audio stuff is completely independent, and requires no
mounting. It's basically just an XMMS hack.

What it does is to scan cds (automatically, I think) and any audio
tracks it finds get listed in the file selection under whatever
directory you've chosen in the xmms preferences. These files won't show
up in any other program - they're not really there. It's strictly an
xmms thing. fstab and mtab have nothing to do with it. Note also that
you *can* choose the same directory for the listing of these pseudofiles
as you would for mounting an actual cdrom, but you don't need to.

To set which directory the pseudofiles get put in, configure the CD
Audio input plugin in xmms.

Forgive the cross-post but I think it's important that the
boot-floppy folks know about this installation difficulty.

I'm trying to install Debian on a Proliant DL360 server with Compaq's

Status: Succeeded in getting the base system installed by choosing
the `bf24' kernel, the only option on the 3.0 CD that
recognized the Smart Array 5i RAID controller.

Problem #1: Cannot get past the base system install because tasksel
keeps looping at the prompt to mount CD #1.

Problem #2: There was no network driver that I could find on the 3.0
Debian CDs that supports the Broadcom device.

In researching the issue, I ran accross postings that reach
the general conclusion that Broadcom's original driver is
not good, e.g., < http://old.lwn.net/2002/0228/a/tigon.php3 >.
The recommended alternative is the tg3 (Tigon3) driver.

Question: I have access to another fully-installed Debian system with a
gcc compiler as well as these files from a Redhat 7.3 system:

tg3.c tg3.h tg3.o

Could someone please tell me the steps (details would be nice)
that are necessary to prepare the above tg3 files into something
that can be put onto a floppy disk and transported via sneakernet
to the Catch-22 system? Once I get network connectivity, I'll
have a workaround to problem #1.

Suggestion: Could the boot-floppy maintainers please include the tg3

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did some snooping around on this one, and found out tg3.o driver is
NOT in my "full" 2.4.18 kernel, but is included in my "full" 2.4.19
kernel. Both of these were installed from the Debian "kernel-image"
packages after I had done a bf2.4 initial install.

The bf2.4 boot-floppies have been trimmed to fit on a floppy. Only the
most likely drivers are included, and unfortunately there will always be
that 10 percent that have equipment not covered. Sorry...

I understand the packages available from Debian are spread across the 7
CDs, with the most frequently used residing on CD #1. I suspect your
tasksel is looking for a needed package that is NOT on your current CD.
The only answer to this is to get CD #1 if you must run tasksel.

Here is a "kludge" suggestion... If you can get a "minimal" install
done on the machine to where you have floppy and CDROM access at the
command line, you might be able to transfer the 2.4.19 kernel package to
it after downloading it on your other machine. Once you get it
installed, you should be able to bring up the network and complete your
install from the internet. I would suggest you temporarily skip the
tasksel step (don't choose anything) and see if the install will
complete. This should give you a minimal "working" system... command
line only. If this can't be done, then getting hold of CD #1 is
probably necessary. For the kernel-image transfer, I suspect the
package is too large to fit on a floppy. That is why I mentioned CDROM
access above. You could burn it on a CD and transfer it that way.

Alternatively ("kludge #2"), to establish network access you could
temporarily put in another NIC that has a driver in the bf2.4 kernel and
get the files you need that way. This might end up being the easiest by
far...you could d/l anthing you need (including packages on CD #1) off
the internet. Once you get the kernel-image-2.4.19 installed you should
be ready to go!

HTH & gives you some ideas.

Cheers,

Re: Shoutcast - passwords

2002-10-28 Thread David Cureton
Oh I recall a problem like that with icecast. I think it was due to there
being a space or some other whitespace character at the end of the password
in the config file. Very frustrating!!

I recall pulling my hair out when the passwords looked exactly the same
(well almost)

I have a vague recollection of there being two passwords also. An
administrator and a client. But those memories are vague!

Need help installing network driver

2002-10-28 Thread Andris Kalnozols
Forgive the cross-post but I think it's important that the
boot-floppy folks know about this installation difficulty.

I'm trying to install Debian on a Proliant DL360 server with Compaq's
built-in NC7780 gigabit-ethernet based on the Broadcom 5701 chip.

Suggestion: Could the boot-floppy maintainers please include the tg3
network driver in their future versions?

Thanks,
Andris Kalnozols

How do I prevent DHCP'd interfaces from coming up automatically on boot?

2002-10-28 Thread Joe Emenaker
I've got a built-in ethernet jack on my laptop. Being a laptop... this jack
is often not plugged into anything (aka: I don't want it coming up
automatically on boot). However, being a laptop, when it *is* plugged in, it
gets plugged in at a variety of places (aka: I need DHCP).

The problem is that, if I set up my /etc/network/interfaces like so:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback

  iface eth0 inet dhcp

then Debian seems to try to bring up eth0 *anyway*. /etc/network/interfaces
claims that I can use a "noauto " directive, but I get an error
message on the console (about a syntax error in /etc/network/interfaces, of
course) at boot time when I try that.

Am I missing something here? Is it the prescribed behavior for the "dhcp"
directive to imply "auto"?

MXXS Problems

2002-10-28 Thread lameth
I can't play any audio cd's in XMMS. When I click the play button a
window opens displaying my home directory, when I change to the /cdrom/
directory no files are listed. I've checked etc/fstab and I do have a
listing for my cdrom drive;

/dev/cdrom/cdrom iso9660 ro, user, noauto0
 0

When I issue the command mount /cdrom I get this response
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/cdrom, or to
many mounted file systems.

When I issue the command umount /cdrom I get this response
umount: /cdrom is not mounted (according to mtab)

The contents of mtab are;
/dev/hda2 / ext3 rw, errors=remount-ro 0 0
proc /proc proc rw 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,gid=5,mode=620 0
/dev/hda4 /home ext3 rw 0 0
/proc/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs rw 0 0

From what I've read on the linux document project's site my cdrom is
set correctly in fstab. The cdrom is actually a dvd-rom drive, that
actually works and plays dvd's, would it need different settings in
fstab to play audio cd's.

RE: Corporate Anti-virus solutions

2002-10-28 Thread Joyce, Matthew

It allows the
user to postpone an update if they are doing something(again you can
ovveride this as the admin). You can do a "remote" install without being on
the user's system(win2000 computers need the "remote registry editor"
service or whatever its called enabled for it to work). The software will
automatically disable itself after 3 months of no upgrades forcing users to
upgrade, which I think is good, old AV software is a false sense of
security(it will also send a big warning if you try to run it after 3
months, after 1 month it warns you to upgrade saying you have 2 months until
the software stops working or something). I came up with a quick script to
update the server nightly and then the clients would update automatically
each night. worked quite well.

Unix side is even easier, no software to maintain, just use the normal tools
to copy the updated files around(no daemons to restart or anything).
Upgrading the package itself, just copy the files over and run the installer
script(its non interactive so can be run automatically if you wish).

upgrades are available from their website, and they send you a CD each
month. One of the best features is the license, they allow employees of a
company full and unrestricted use of the software on their home computers.
So I put up a website where employees could download the software and use at
home if they wanted. Even freebsd/solaris/linux versions.

the win32 server-client version also has a "admin tool" where you can check
the status of the workstations and servers to see what versions are
installed, what updates are installed, and the status of the
software(running/disabled/etc).

the only real downside is the auto-upgrade for win32 upgrades the whole
installation rather then just a incremental update. This uses a lot of
bandwidth, on a LAN its not an issue for me, but dialup users and stuff can
be caught waiting for a while while it downloads(*) :)

their sales staff is quite knowledgable, and as another added bonus they
have sworn(more or less) to NOT co-operate with the FBI in "not detecting"
the FBI's trojans. Symantec (& I think Mcafee) said at one point they would
not detect the FBI's trojans(I think they later changed their views so that
they would though). Being a UK company Sophos doesn't have as much incentive
to support the FBI. Sophos turned me onto amavis back in 2000, and they do
have people that monitor the amavis mailing list(perhaps other lists too).
The product is quite good, well supported under linux.

The price is

I don't think apt does, but apt-proxy does.

I don't have multiple machines (yet) that need updating, but I still run
apt-proxy on localhost because it allows this, and uses rsync for
package files - which can speed up apt-get update quite a bit. It allows
you to specify multiple hosts in order of preference for each source you
define. You then point apt at the local host instead of the actual
server and let apt-proxy sort it out. It makes the download status act a
little strange in apt, and sometimes a package times out, but I am
reasonably happy with it.

Re: mail in linux

2002-10-28 Thread
You can ask the server (if IMAP) for part no. 0 of "HEADER.0" (approx.) and you'll
get your headers (there's a similar command for POP3). The headers themselves do
not indicate KLEZ mails and their variants, for one reason because KLEZ headers
often have innaccurate information about the actual parts of the message.

Furthermore, the headers we are talking here about are only the top level headers
which tell you nothing specific (and nothing at all as for deeper MIME levels)
about the message other than the main MIME part, if the main part is in fact 2
parts, you can learn that fact "multipart/alternative" for example, but that does
not tell you much.

Poolng/redundancy in apt's sources.list?

2002-10-28 Thread Joe Emenaker

Okay, I'm stumped.
ย
I used to go directly to ftp.debian.orgย for my packages. However, I
started feeling guilty about hammering the central servers, so I started using
mirrors.
ย
The problem with that was that many of the mirrors
would either be a few days out-of-sync with the central servers or some would be
down. In general, there'd just be some problem that requred me altering my
sources.list file every couple of weeks.
ย
Then, I started putting multiple mirrors in my
sources.list. This makes it more reliable when trying to install packages.
However, when I try to Update the database through dselect, I almost always get
some sites that can't be reached... causing "apt-get update" to return an error
code, which causes dselect to decide to not rebuild the "available"
file.
ย
It's kind of a catch-22. The more entries in
sources.list, the more distributed the load can be and the more chances I have
of being able to get the package but it also increases the chance that the
update operation will fail altogether if there's one site that can't be
reached.
ย
What I'd *love* is if there was some way to group a
bunch of "deb ..." entries in sources.list together in a group that indicated
"These are all redundant. If justย ONE of these can be reached, that's good
enough".
ย
Does apt support this kind of thing
yet?

Is it a soundblaster, or a soundblaster live! card? They use different

it's a PCI card, isapnp won't be much help. If it's PCI, make sure the

You could always have fetchmail dial out on demand if you don't mind
the phone bill. I assumed, from your network description, that you had
an always-on connection. But if you don't have this, yes, I agree that
looking at headers might be nice. Use IMAP if you can.

While doing some admin box on a debian machine at work I found a
pop3browser package and the description matches what you want.

Not really. You are assuming (1) you can determine a virus from
looking at headers and (2) your MUA is so buggy that a virus will get
to it (welcome to Linux).

Cheers!

Random guess: kernel (which anybody halfway serious about performance
does anyway), libc, XFree86, openssl, maybe a few other highly
CPU-intensive things. Anything that hits memory, disk, or other I/O
heavily isn't worth it.

Of course, I haven't done any benchmarks either. :)

/etc/init.d services start/stop question

2002-10-28 Thread Benedict Verheyen

Hi,
ย
i just installed shorewall and it made 2 links in
/etc/rc2.d
K99shorewall and S99shorewall. I can see why the
S99
would have to be there. Is the reason of K99 to
prevent
net access forย instance when one goes "telinit
S"?
ย
What scripts are called first, K or S?
ย
Also, the debian reference guide says that all the
scripts
in /etc/init.d take start, stop, ... as parameters
to start
stop, the services.
But how does the system specify these when i
reads
for instance S99shorewall when booting the
system?
Does it add a "start" parameter to the script when
it
resolves the link to start the script?
ย
Thanks

Hi,

i'm pretty new to iptables too. Problem with linux is that there is so much
stuff to learn and when you want to get a system up and running, it's not
always clear to what one has to do.
I finally got it to work by removing the ipmasq package and installing
shorewall instead. My server used to be a SuSE7?2 system with the
SuSEfirewall 2 script on it. Quite easy to install but no match for the
debian apt-get and shorewall combo. Try it. It took me 30 minutes
to install, going through a sample config. My ftp connection worked
immediately as did the rest.
SSH didn't work but a simple "ACCEPT loc fw tcp ssh" entry in the
/etc/shorewall/rules file solved that. Wow, very impressive.

Only problem i still have is that when i log on to the system say
on ttys1 for instance, that i get log messages of unauthorized access.
The shorewall faq said this on it:

"16. Shorewall is writing log messages all over my console making it
unusable!
Answer: "man dmesg" -- add a suitable 'dmesg' command to your startup
scripts or place it in /etc/shorewall/start. Under RedHat, the max log level
that is sent to the console is specified in /etc/sysconfig/init in the
LOGLEVEL variable."

But i don't know how to do this.
I think adding dmesg -n 1 to the /etc/init.d/shorewall script would
solve that but i'm not sure.

Another thing i noticed is that there is a K99shorewall and a S99shorewall
link in /etc/rc2.d
No other programs seems to have both a kill and start service link in here.

are you testing it from outside the firewall? my experience, many
things with port forwarding fail to look like they "work" if your
trying to connect from the system doing the forwarding or from
a system that is doing NAT for a machine doing the forwarding.

try connecting to the service from outside the firewall(perhaps another
mahcine on the same subnet as the firewall) to see what happens.
or ask someone you know to telnet to the port and see what response they
get.

portfw timeout

2002-10-28 Thread Thomas Halahan

(apologies if already sent - my mails never seem to arrrive or am i
impatient?)

Hi,

Running 2.2 kernel with ipchains etc.. firewall setup. Have got a simple
firewall and have tried both the ipmasq package and a simple firewall builder
GUI called firestarter (seems pretty good for my requirements).

The problem I am having, after successfully compiling and installing the
ip_masq_portfw module, is that the port forwarding is timeing out (despite
clearly listening for connections on the fw port).

I have an ADSL modem with ip EXT_IP and a machine (not the firewall) with
internal ip INT_IP and have configured port forwarding as seems pretty
standard for a web server as follows

ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L EXT_IP 80 -R INT_IP 8081
ipmasqadm portfw -a -P udp -L EXT_IP 80 -R INT_IP 8081

(tomcat server as the target).

When I issue the commands above I can tell that forwarding has partially
started as my browser pointing to http://EXT_IP:80 continues to attempt to
load the site (before issueing the portfw commands the browser comes straight
back with unable to connect to host).

If I issue a lsmod I can see the module is being used.

I cannot find any logging.

Have played with hosts.allow and hosts.deny.

Finally I tried a "$ telnet EXT_IP 80" and which stayed in a waiting to
connect state.

Any ideas why I might be getting timeouts? Clearly something in the chain is
not passing on reuqests.

Suggestions welcome and very appreciated...

You can have XFree86 create a config file based on the detection of
the devices. Run as root, "XFree86 -configure". It may not find the
mouse correctly, to check the generated config file for that. Also,
you may need to install a few packages to help detect the hardware,
such as discover and mdetect.

The first thing I'd check is to see if the font is installed. Do
"dpkg -l | grep font" and check for defoma, xfonts-base,
xfonts-100dpi, xfonts-75dpi. I don't know what font package that font
comes from, but I suspect xfonts-base.

You can use gtkfontsel to view all the fonts installed.

Re: pcmcia stops working on 2.2.20 to 2.4.19 upgrade

Hi Kevin,

Now you should use yenta_socket and the tulip driver. tulip_cb is no
longer needed.

Hope this helps,

Eric

Kevin Coyner wrote:

I've got an older IBM 560X laptop that I recently put Debian 2.2.20 on.
The pcmcia card that I got to work was a Netgear FA511 ethernet. Once I
got it all working and the pcmcia/ethernet connected to the internet, I
decided to do an upgrade of the kernel from 2.2.20 to 2.4.19. So I
apt-get install'd:

kernel-image-2.4.19-386
kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4.29-386

The DL and install went without a hitch. I made the minor LILO edits
needed, and fired up the new kernel. The system started up fine, except
for the fact that I lost the pcmcia.

So I'm wondering what 2.2.20 had in it that 2.4.19 doesn't?

I've compared lsmod for both kernels, and have found that the following
mods are not present in 2.4.19, but are present in 2.2.20:

tulip_cb
cb_enabler
ds
i82365

While in 2.4.19, I've tried insmod tulip_cb and cb_enabler, but both
generate the error message "can't locate module". I suspect I need
these to get it working under 2.4.19. I also kind of thought they'd be
in the kernel-pcmcia-modules-2.4.19-386 package, but perhaps not.
How/where do I get and install them?

Under 2.4.19, I also check /var/log/syslog and noted the following
entries:

Linux Kernel Card Services 3.1.22
	options :[pci][cardbus][pm]
ds: no socket drivers loaded
cardmgr[224]: starting, version is 3.1.33
cardmgr[224]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices
cardmgr[224]: exiting

Looking for a little help deciphering these clues. Probably pretty
obvious to many, but not so to someone like me that is still climbing up
the curve (and loving it). Thanks.

Kevin

I can't reccomend sophos enough. I've always hated symantec. I don't
know what it is about them that drives chills down my spine but I
just can't stand them.

Sophos is great because they support a diverse selection of platforms,
provide incremental(e.g. 10kb or so) updates, their upgrades are
just plain files, no "smart update" with binary patches to the virus
defs like some other vendors do, so updates are easy to deploy(extract
the files..). for Win32 they have an auto upgrade thing if you have a
Win32 server you can make a "server" install and install the client
"versions" on the clients and have them check for updates ever so
often(default is every 10 minutes). When an update is detected it
removes & reinstalls the product automatically(with or without user
interaction depending on your preferences). It allows the user to
postpone an update if they are doing something(again you can ovveride
this as the admin). You can do a "remote" install without being on
the user's system(win2000 computers need the "remote registry editor"
service or whatever its called enabled for it to work). The software
will automatically disable itself after 3 months of no upgrades forcing
users to upgrade, which I think is good, old AV software is a false
sense of security(it will also send a big warning if you try to run
it after 3 months, after 1 month it warns you to upgrade saying you
have 2 months until the software stops working or something). I came
up with a quick script to update the server nightly and then the clients
would update automatically each night. worked quite well.

Unix side is even easier, no software to maintain, just use the normal
tools to copy the updated files around(no daemons to restart or
anything). Upgrading the package itself, just copy the files over
and run the installer script(its non interactive so can be run
automatically if you wish).

upgrades are available from their website, and they send you a CD
each month. One of the best features is the license, they allow employees
of a company full and unrestricted use of the software on their home
computers. So I put up a website where employees could download the
software and use at home if they wanted. Even freebsd/solaris/linux
versions.

the win32 server-client version also has a "admin tool" where you
can check the status of the workstations and servers to see what
versions are installed, what updates are installed, and the status
of the software(running/disabled/etc).

the only real downside is the auto-upgrade for win32 upgrades the
whole installation rather then just a incremental update. This
uses a lot of bandwidth, on a LAN its not an issue for me, but dialup
users and stuff can be caught waiting for a while while it downloads(*) :)

their sales staff is quite knowledgable, and as another added bonus
they have sworn(more or less) to NOT co-operate with the FBI in
"not detecting" the FBI's trojans. Symantec (& I think Mcafee) said
at one point they would not detect the FBI's trojans(I think they
later changed their views so that they would though). Being a UK
company Sophos doesn't have as much incentive to support the
FBI. Sophos turned me onto amavis back in 2000, and they do have
people that monitor the amavis mailing list(perhaps other lists
too). The product is quite good, well supported under linux.

The price is not bad either, compared to Mcafee at least. I think
when I re-purchased it earlier this year for, 50 users I think,
for their full blown package(server+client), it was about 60% cheaper
then Symantec(on the desktop) and Sophos(on the mail server) was a
year earlier(part of that was major downsizing so we didn't have a
need for as many licenses).

(*) you could come up with your own method to upgrade incrementally
if you wanted I am certain of it, the auto upgrader does not
distinguish between incremental upgrades and version upgrades, everything
is considered a version upgrade. This could be advantageous incase
somehow the software got trojaned, having a new installation may
be "cleaner" in some cases.

the package cannot be loaded with the 0.14.3 main package.

Is there a particular reason why there is not a subversion-tools 0.14.3

soundcore is the only one from that list that has to do with sound. The

No, I just missed that it was the IS department claiming to have
found a vulnerability and assumed it was an outside vendor. ("You
want me to buy your services to fix the problem? OK, but first prove
that there is a problem to fix.") I agree that this technique
wouldn't work in the case you're talking about.

You have my sympathy. In a previous life, I got to deal with a CVS
server that died with no good backups. Fortunately, I wasn't
responsible for admin there, so neither the hardware failure nor the
bad backups were attributed to me. Unfortunately, I was the one who
pushed CVS and used it most heavily, so I got blamed for schedule
slippage when I had to spend time rebuilding the CVS repository
instead of writing code.

> Is there any way to accomplish this? Do I have to give up and simply
> import the entire codebase as if it were a new project?

You're going to have to set up a (hopefully) temporary repository to
use until alpha becomes available. If alpha is completely
unavailable (as opposed to simply not being able to use its CVS
repository), it'll make your life a lot easier if you tweak either
DNS or /etc/hosts to associate alpha's name with the temporary CVS
server's IP address; if you can't do this, you'll need to update
CVS/Root in every CVS-managed directory *of the new master copy*.
("New master copy" being the copy you initially import to the new
repository.)

Then you'll need to import the master copy, check it out on each
development station, and copy all the modified files from the exiting
CVS client trees into the new ones and check them in, which will
start the new version trail. Just be sure not to copy the CVS
subdirectories over to the new tree, since they'll still have version
info from the old tree.

If alpha should become available again and you still want to switch
back to it, you'll need to commit everything to the new repository,
check out a fresh copy from alpha, use `cvs export` to get a current
copy from the new repository without CVS subdirectories, `cp -r` the
exported tree onto the fresh tree from alpha, and commit it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some memories to re-repress...

You obviously don't understand the corporate IT mindset :)--it's not up
to them to prove your system is vulnerable, it's up to _you_ to prove
that it isn't.

If they think it's vulnerable or don't believe you they'll just
blacklist it from the network and you're SOL. They have all the power,
because they control the network (routers/switches/firewalls/etc.)

Of course, given the average level of understanding of these things in a
corporate IT environment I'd be very surprised if many of them would
look at the Debian extended version string and go "oh, yeah, Debian has
a patched version; that's fine" so I'm not sure how much _immediate_
help it is anyway.

But, at least you can point them at the appropriate security alerts and
responses on the Debian web site and have some semblance of an argument
to back you up.

This appears to be the right way to test it.
But I cannot get exim to reject anyone, even with:

sender_reject = *

and host_reject does not offer localpart control. I have been through
the manpage and the exim spec and can figure this out.
More help would be helpful.

I wonder if that is something to do with fsck - I know that on really
large partitions, it can take "bloody well forever", partly due to the
amount of data it appears to need to work through things -
disproportionately longer than some smaller partitions.

Quick and easy way to convince them: "Really? How's about I stand

minutes of banging their head against your server to realize that no,

Umm. I think so. Mine did that too anyway. Not sure how it actually
works.

I expect you're having troubles because of the client - maybe not. But
have you tried connecting to the server by just telnetting in?

-telnet to whatever port icecast is running on, and then type

ADMIN password

(the two enters are mandatory)

If that works, then you know the password setup and encryption is fine,
and there's a problem with your source.

The "normal" wiki? Which is that? There's a lot of wiki's out there...
http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiEngines lists about 50, of which at least 3-4
are part of debian unstable. (PHPWiki, ZWiki, twiki, and the one I'm
using, usemod-wiki, maybe some others too).

I tried zwiki too, but it seemed to be quite a pain to set up, since it
depends on such an extensive framework, with all the zope stuff. I gave
up pretty quickly and settled on the simplest one that I found -
usemod-wiki. It lacks a lot of features that you might want though.

I had this problem with a 2.4 kernel and iptables. Normal FTP uses a
separate connection for data, although if you use passive mode, it will
work over the main connection. If I use a 2.2 kernel with ipchains,
the ip_masq_ftp module, which takes care of the data connection, will
be installed and there are no problems.

I find the documentation on setting up iptables to be somewhat
confusing, but I figure I just haven't spent enough time on it yet.

I have a different problem now however. I configured port forwarding,
but if a client outside my lan tries to ftp from my server, it only
works if passive mode is NOT used.

Re: gtk1 themes and gnome2

2002-10-28 Thread
I "ported" a bunch of gtk+ themes to gtk2 so I could have the same look. I use a
simple sh script to change the .gtkrc file. I know you don't use rpm but if you
extract the files you get the all the themes, use it like a tarball, put them where
you need them. I explain in the .spec files (also there) where the files go and
what I did to "port" them and how I am not the author of the themes, I just hacked
them to work with gtk2. Sorry my bandwith is limited so I only put up these rpm
files.

These themes provide the gtk2 counterparts for gtk1 themes from "gtk-engines"

That sounds like you want to use "IP aliasing":

iface eth0 inet static
address 10.0.1.47
netmask 255.255.240.0
broadcast 10.0.15.255
gateway 10.0.0.1

iface eth0:1 inet static
address 192.168.17.17
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.17.255

This setup will have packets to both local networks (10.0.0.0/20 and
192.168.17.0/24) go out over the wire attached to eth0; packets going
further in the world go via 10.0.0.1.

Any setup more complicated than this involves setting up real routing
tables, and/or having multiple physical interfaces. You can use an
'up' command to add an extra route:

up route add -net 192.168.18.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.17.18

Maximum partition size

2002-10-28 Thread Levi Waldron
Is this an outdated statement from the Debian installation guide?
From: http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-partitioning.en.html#s6.4

"Based on limitations in how ext2 works, avoid any single partition greater
than 6GB or so. "

Strictly speaking, the libgtk1.2 package and its dependencies. More
loosely, APT. :-)

No.

Yes. (Well, and also Glib, since that's a dependency.)

On the Debian archive, along with everything else.

'dpkg --install filename.deb'; see dpkg(8) or run 'dpkg --help'.

For basic application installation, though, lots and lots of things
are packaged in Debian. I'd recommend doing the following:

  (1) Install aptitude, if you don't already have it. Run 'apt-get
  update', then 'apt-get install aptitude'.

  (2) Start aptitude by running 'aptitude'. Press / to search; you
can type in "package-name", or "~dsomething" to search for
"something" in the package descriptions. \ will repeat the last
search. If you find a package you want, press "+" to install
it. Pressing "g" twice will then install the things you've
  selected.

One technique (which I used because at the time I didn't have
sufficient network resources and the BIOS was too old to boot from a
CD) is to pull the hard drive out of the [34]86 and put it in a newer
machine. Run through the install on the beefy hardware (taking care
to install all network, etc, drivers you'll need on the other
machine), then move the hard drive back.
