Actually I get a strange behavior: with metacity as compositing manager -- I have fast window movements and fast scrolling in applications like iceweasel, but windows resize is very slow, as is workspace switching (takes between 1 and 2 seconds, which is the thing I hate most) with metacity as NON compositing manager -- workspace switching is instant and resize is fast, but movement and scrolling is terribly slow (you can see the frames being redrawn one by one) Also, as I understand it, one of the problems is that part of the graphic calculations are delegated to the CPU, which would explain why since the upgrade the fan is almost constantly spinning while before it was resting 80% of the time (same environmental conditions of course). Fwd: Does lenny use grub2?
Thanks everybody for the replies, I'm still unsure on how to proceed. When I install lenny should I let the installer proceed with its own grub and put it in the master boot record? Will this overwrite the current grub2? Or should I install the lenny loader in its own partition and chainload it from grub2 after booting back in my current system with (I guess) a rescue disk? (not really sure if this is how chainloading works, bear with my ignorance) Will lenny bootloader installer see my other system and allow boot from it as well? -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Lee Winter lee.j.i.win...@gmail.com writes: In the discussion above you persist in mixing the sort function with the sort command. They are not the same, so please be more careful in your descriptions of what it is you want to accomplish. To sort with a function, such as is found in many programming languages, you should create a data structure containing the value to be sorted (the key) and any audit/trance information you need about the position of each item prior to the sort. After sorting such data structures with the language's sort() function you will be able to identify where each value started and ended. To sort with a command, such as is found in many command-line envoronments, you should create lines of text, each containing the value to be sorted (the key) and followed by any audit/trace information you need about the position of each item prior to the sort. After sorting the text lines with the command-line environment's text sorting utility you will be able to identify where each value started and ended. The above descriptions answer the question you asked. But it appears to me that the answer you need is related to a different question. What do you need to do with the values after they are sorted? If you have both the initially ordered list and the sorted list, why do you care where things started as long as they are where they need to be when you are done? Thanks for your answer, Lee. Sorry if, after having read my text, you think that I am mixing the sort function and the sort command. It was not my intention, as they are different things, both to you, and to me. I am here sorting with a _command_, this one being `sort'. Your idea of appending to each key, e.g. a number, is great. I had not thought about it. The question is now: how to append to lines some text? Okay, generating numbers so that n_1 n_2 ... n_n is not difficult, but how can I redirect them to each line of a flux using bash? The problem is not so complex. I have files with names which are only constituted by numbers. Each file contains exactly one e-mail, but the `Received' field of each e-mail is not linked to the name of the file. For example, if I have three files, say `1' , `2' and `3', each containing an e-mail with headers, displaying only the `Received' field on each could give, for example: File 1 - Received 2 Jan 2009 File 2 - Received 7 Sep 2005 File 3 - Received 3 Feb 2009 Once I have sorted the dates, and as the global `cat *' takes account of the order between numbers in the set of the integers (i.e. `cat *' is equivalent to `cat 1' and `cat 2' iff the current folder only contains `.', `..', `1' and `2'), I can then sort the dates. Before the sorting, the n-th date is related to the n-th e-mail's headers' `Received' field. After the sort, it may have completely no link. Consequently, I need to know which e-mail was received first, and consequently which date was moved at the beginning of the list. I hope I have been clear. I now need to be able to append increasing number to each line of the flux _before_ the sorting. Do you have an idea about how to implement this in bash? (not really sure if this is how chainloading works, bear with my ignorance) That's another option. Install it in the partition, your old MBR and boot loader are intact. Then you boot in the old system normally (no need for a rescue disk, your boot loader is still there) and add an entry for your new system. Either chailoading, or booting directly. But you can follow many paths: 1/ If you already have Grub (or Grub2) installed in your system, you can choose not to install Grub for Lenny. Just add the corresponding entry for Lenny to boot in the current grub/grub2 menu so it can start the system. 2/ If you want to install another Grub (I'd recommend it), you can: a) Install it in the MBR - you will *overwrite* your current bootloader, if any, located in the MBR. b) Install it in the first sector of a partition - this is my preferred solution, as it does not touch the MBR at all and you can have as many grubs as you want :-) I, personally, like having MBR clean (just generic code, no bootloader at all) and having Grub installed into partition(s) -each system holding with its own Grub-. This way I can mark the desired partition the computer will boot by just marking it with the boot-flag. But I see exactly what you're saying. You'll see no difference when you code in vi. Could it be that the problems of the Nvidia driver not working have their reason in a non working xorg.conf file? What is it's content? As the driver installer suggest his own version, and from my experience this works extremely well (screen, mouse with all buttons c.), this could also be the source of the problem AFAICS. I always let the nvidia installer replace my xorg.conf, so that's not the problem in my case. I had suspected the headers against which I was compiling, but I tried both the headers package and the configured source and had the same problem, namely the Nvidia splash screen appearing for a few seconds (meaning that the driver is working?) and then the server crashing. Maybe there's something hanging around on my system that's interfering, but I don't know what. Anyway, it's working now with the 190.53 driver (installed using the nvidia installer) and the 2.6.26 kernel, so I'm happy for now! But if you leave the box checked, it will only prompt the first time. Subsequent openings of root terminal will be granted access without supplying a password. If you logout of the GNOME desktop and then login again, it will prompt for the administrative password again. Just make sure that you uncheck the box marked Remember password and it will prompt you every time. OK, the password issue is solved. Now I open a root terminal and it asks for the password, I enter it and the root terminal terminates. Never a dull moment in Linux. However, I can just su in a regular terminal so no big deal. And it asks for the root password elsewhere. So Thanks a lot. Thank you, Norm You're obviously new around here, so let me clue you in on how things are done around here. Rule number 1: always reply, as well as post, to the list: never to an individual. The only time you should send an e-mail to an individual is if you feel compelled to say something that you wouldn't want seen in public. But be careful about that. You're asking for free help; so flaming somebody is counter-productive to your goals. If you are not subscribed to the list and want a reply sent to your personal e-mail as well as the list, explicitly request that in your post. Otherwise, we will post only to the list and if you neglect to check back on the list, you will never see our replies. I will CC you this time, but after that I won't unless you request it on each post. Rule number 2: do not top post. Instead, use the usenet style of quoting. For more information on that see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_posting I spent a fair amount of time re-formatting this message in usenet style. Don't make us do that. Rule number 3: Keep lines of ordinary text prose to under 80 characters long. Actually, it's better to keep it somewhat shorter so that the greater than signs used for quoting and nested quoting won't later extend those lines past 80 columns. Rule number 4: use plain text only, not HTML. Rule number 5: always say Thank you when someone helps you. You got that part right. And if it weren't for that I might have ingored your subsequent post. For additional rules, see the Debian Mailing list policy: http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/ OK, now that we have these logistical issues down (I hope) we can get on to the problem. OK, the password issue is solved. Thank you, Norm You're welcome. Now I open a root terminal and it asks for the password, I enter it and the root terminal terminates. Hmm. I've never seen this before. Forgive me for asking a dumb question, but you didn't click on the Cancel button instead of the OK button, did you? That's exactly the behavior I would expect to see if you clicked on the Cancel button. It works fine for me if I simply hit the Enter key after typing the password or if I click on the OK button. I wouldn't ask this question, except that you have already shown a propensity for not paying too much attention to what is on the screen (like the check box for Remember password). :-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. That could/would cause quite some mess. testing/unstable is bad enough but you should be careful using it. I thought if you set up apt-pinning in /etc/apt/preferences that should be possible without any major problems? You've got to remember a few things when running a mixed system: 1. Debian policy is to maintain the ABI for libraries that keep the same SONAME, but sometimes packages headed for unstable/experimental break this, usually unintentionally. If it is an important library, this can really mess with your system stability (i.e. lack of crashes). 2. Downgrades are not supported, and can't really be. Once you've pulled in a package from testing/unstable you can't go back, and as that package has new version released, it may gradually need more dependencies from testing/unstable. For some packages you can PURGE and then reinstall a lower version, but doing the purge can be difficult if you have other packages that depend on it. I've done some normal package downgrades before, but I got lucky and they worked; I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. 3. Just because a package says it will work with the libraries in stable doesn't always mean it will. Humans do the packaging and they make mistakes. Since most packages are uploaded to unstable (and migrate to testing/stable through other means), they are tested against a pure unstable system. Even packages that are uploaded specifically to testing (rare) or stable(-proposed- updates), aren't tested on a mixed system, but rather a pure testing or pure stable system. 4. apt-listbugs is your friend, particularly when you are upgrading a package from stable - testing or testing - unstable. You don't have to let every bug hold you back, but you should be selective about which bugs you install. 5. apt-cache policy is invaluable in making sure your /etc/apt/preferences file is provided the level of mix you want. In short, you are in potentially dangerous and completely unsupported waters. The mix of testing/unstable is fairly well tested and documented in apt_preferences(5). Using stable + backports is very safe, even without pinning (backports pins itself to priority 1). Using unstable + experimental is how experimental was designed (it doesn't have every package) so it is as safe as using experimental packages ever is. Something like my stable/backports/testing/unstable/experimental mix is well beyond unsupported, at least in theory. In practice it has been no harder to maintain that any other Debian system, and I've been able to use the same resources I ever did. I recommend it for advanced users that are comfortable working with the interactive dependency resolver in aptitude, but with the warnings above in mind. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/\_/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

As for your new problem, it looks like your DHCP server is set up to hand out 1 hour leases. If the DHCP server is built in to the router, as is often the case, that comes down to reconfiguring your router. You want a fairly long lease time. You also want a fair amount of time between when a lease is released (or when connectivity is lost) and when that IP address is made available for reuse. Of course, much thanks for all the informative replies! This one probably hits it. The question is how to reconfigure? I have found no configure http or anything else. Re: Does lenny use grub2?
Dne, 30. 01. 2010 13:21:40 je Camaleón napisal(a): b) Install it in the first sector of a partition - this is my preferred solution, as it does not touch the MBR at all and you can have as many grubs as you want :-) My preferred solution too. An additional bonus is that you get rather robust, self-contained partitions: they don't depend on any Grubs residing on other partitions, so are completely impervious to you reformatting other partitions, or installing new systems on them, or whatever. In fact, as you rightly point out, even in the remote case that all your partitions save one get somehow borked, you just have to enable the surviving partition and the computer will boot by just marking it with the boot-flag. I know, it's a bit messy O:-) It may be a bit messy, but is also very clean and simple to maintain. -- Regards, Klistvud Certifiable Loonix User #481801 http://bufferoverflow.tiddlyspot.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
