Grub : error the symbol 'grub_env_find' not found

2010-01-30 Thread yann
Bonjour,

http://prdownload.berlios.de/supergrub/sgd_cdrom_1.21.iso.gz

http://www.linuxpedia.fr/doku.php/expert/grub2

Chapitre Récupération en cas de problème.

Bonne chance.

Je me
retrouve avec la touche up qui devient print-screen, la touche page-up qui
devient un slash… Les touches affectés sont les suivantes :
- les quatre flèches de direction
- page-up/page-down
- home/fin/inser/suppr
shift droit fonctionnent parfaitement)

dig  www.cualquiersitio.com.ar
dig  www.cualquiersitio.com.ar

servidor? o ¿Me falta configurar algo?

;; Query time: 92 msec
;; SERVER: 80.58.0.33#53(80.58.0.33) servidor dns que me ha devuelto
la consulta
;; WHEN: Sat Jan 30 11:45:40 2010
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 94

; (1 server found)

;; SERVER: 8.8.8.8#53(8.8.8.8)
;; WHEN: Sat Jan 30 11:47:12 2010
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 94

WICD
ha sido dividido ahora en:

i A python-wicd -
wired and wireless network manager - Python module
i wicd -
wired and wireless network manager - metapackage
p wicd-cli -
wired and wireless network manager - scriptable cli client
v wicd-client -
i A wicd-curses -
wired and wireless network manager - Curses client
i A wicd-daemon -
wired and wireless network manager - daemon
i wicd-gtk -
wired and wireless network manager - GTK+ client

Se for útil:
debian lenny, atualizado, openbox

lógica do software. Eu conheço poucos programas com essa
característica.

I use a wild mix of Grub legacy and Grub 2 on my two boxes and it works

Sorry I should have checked before pointing you there.
Make sure to backup any important files (like configuration stuff in /etc)
before you start to fiddle with these things.

Disclaimer: I'm by no means a downgrade expert ;)
Perhaps you could temporarily get the X packages from debian testing in
 order to downgrade?

If you really want the previous version: I think if you inspect the
dependencies of the last working version of the xserver-xorg
package you should be able to find out which packages can go with that
 (use dpkg --info for that).

The specific packages I downgraded too, if I recall correctly, were the
 following
(i cannot give any guarantees that these actually are the right ones,
 sorry,
and perhaps you need a different video driver, etc.)

 xserver-common_2%3a1.6.5-1_all.deb

Hi,

before going the (hard) downgrade way, did you try using the free
radeon driver (or whichever is relevant for your card). I fixed a
computer crippled by the same problem yesterday, running an Ati
HD2600XT, and the result is so nice that the owner doesn't want to go
back to fglrx ! I just removed the xorg.conf file and rebooted, fixed.

Of course your luck will depend on how well supported your hardware is,
but even without 3D acceleration it would be a workaround, I read that
Ati is about to release a new driver, maybe this one will finally catch
up with xorg and kernel development (for now...).

Yes I am using the free driver now but the performance is poor. Actually
I get a strange behavior:

with metacity as compositing manager -- I have fast window movements and
fast scrolling in applications like iceweasel, but windows resize is
very slow, as is workspace switching (takes between 1 and 2 seconds,
which is the thing I hate most)

with metacity as NON compositing manager -- workspace switching is
instant and resize is fast, but movement and scrolling is terribly slow
(you can see the frames being redrawn one by one)

Also, as I understand it, one of the problems is that part of the
graphic calculations are delegated to the CPU, which would explain why
since the upgrade the fan is almost constantly spinning while before it
was resting 80% of the time (same environmental conditions of course).

I hope it will be a fast release. I know that downgrading can be a real
pain, and I honestly don't even know where to find the packages I need,
I was actually thinking about installing a lenny system to fall back on
whenever things get broken like this.

Thanks everybody for the replies, I'm still unsure on how to proceed.

When I install lenny should I let the installer proceed with its own

current grub2?

Or should I install the lenny loader in its own partition and chainload
it from grub2 after booting back in my current system with (I guess) a

Will lenny bootloader installer see my other system and allow boot from

Lee Winter lee.j.i.win...@gmail.com writes:

In the discussion above you persist in mixing the sort function with
the sort command. They are not the same, so please be more careful in
your descriptions of what it is you want to accomplish.

To sort with a function, such as is found in many programming
languages, you should create a data structure containing the value to
be sorted (the key) and any audit/trance information you need about
the position of each item prior to the sort. After sorting such data
structures with the language's sort() function you will be able to
identify where each value started and ended.

To sort with a command, such as is found in many command-line
envoronments, you should create lines of text, each containing the
value to be sorted (the key) and followed by any audit/trace
information you need about the position of each item prior to the
sort. After sorting the text lines with the command-line
environment's text sorting utility you will be able to identify where
 each value started and ended.

The above descriptions answer the question you asked. But it appears
to me that the answer you need is related to a different question.
What do you need to do with the values after they are sorted? If you
have both the initially ordered list and the sorted list, why do you
care where things started as long as they are where they need to be
 when you are done?

Thanks for your answer, Lee.

Sorry if, after having read my text, you think that I am mixing the
sort function and the sort command. It was not my intention, as they
are different things, both to you, and to me.

I am here sorting with a _command_, this one being `sort'. Your idea
of appending to each key, e.g. a number, is great. I had not thought
about it. The question is now: how to append to lines some text? Okay,
generating numbers so that n_1 n_2 ... n_n is not difficult, but
how can I redirect them to each line of a flux using bash?

The problem is not so complex. I have files with names which are only
constituted by numbers. Each file contains exactly one e-mail, but the
`Received' field of each e-mail is not linked to the name of the
file. For example, if I have three files, say `1' , `2' and `3', each
containing an e-mail with headers, displaying only the `Received'
field on each could give, for example:

File 1 - Received 2 Jan 2009
File 2 - Received 7 Sep 2005
File 3 - Received 3 Feb 2009

Once I have sorted the dates, and as the global `cat *' takes account
of the order between numbers in the set of the integers (i.e. `cat *' is
equivalent to `cat 1' and `cat 2' iff the current folder only contains
`.', `..', `1' and `2'), I can then sort the dates. Before the
sorting, the n-th date is related to the n-th e-mail's headers'
`Received' field. After the sort, it may have completely no
link. Consequently, I need to know which e-mail was received first,
and consequently which date was moved at the beginning of the
list.

I hope I have been clear. I now need to be able to append increasing
number to each line of the flux _before_ the sorting. Do you have an
idea about how to implement this in bash?

Thanks.

That's another option. Install it in the partition, your old MBR and

need for a rescue disk, your boot loader is still there) and add an
entry for your new system. Either chailoading, or booting directly.

Lenny can use Grub2, yes. The installer let you choose between old grub
and new grub.

But you can follow many paths:

1/ If you already have Grub (or Grub2) installed in your system, you can
choose not to install Grub for Lenny. Just add the corresponding entry
for Lenny to boot in the current grub/grub2 menu so it can start the
system.

2/ If you want to install another Grub (I'd recommend it), you can:

a) Install it in the MBR - you will *overwrite* your current bootloader,
if any, located in the MBR.

b) Install it in the first sector of a partition - this is my preferred
solution, as it does not touch the MBR at all and you can have as many
grubs as you want :-)

I, personally, like having MBR clean (just generic code, no bootloader
at all) and having Grub installed into partition(s) -each system holding
with its own Grub-. This way I can mark the desired partition the
computer will boot by just marking it with the boot-flag. I know, it's a
bit messy O:-)

All other websites can be browsed fine - at least I can browse
everything OK and send and receive emails. The machine's a gateway
server and runs iptables but I've checked that it makes no difference
by downing the iptables rules and trying with masquerading only.

I can browse the website happily from my mobile phone. I can't work
out what it might be. Here's a couple of error msgs I saw:

Hi Folks
thanks for the advice - I do know the website is running fine out there - I just
can't access it from my LAN. From my mobile phone, fine. But not from my lan.

And those are the outputs from useful cmds above but I can't see any problem.

Actually it's impressive to see users of other OSs turn their eyes round

If you like 3D stuff, you'll get it with the Nvidia driver. But I see
exactly what you're saying. You'll see no difference when you code in vi.

Could it be that the problems of the Nvidia driver not working have
their reason in a non working xorg.conf file? What is it's content? As
the driver installer suggest his own version, and from my experience
this works extremely well (screen, mouse with all buttons c.), this
could also be the source of the problem AFAICS.

I always let the nvidia installer replace my xorg.conf, so that's not
the problem in my case. I had suspected the headers against which I
was compiling, but I tried both the headers package and the configured
source and had the same problem, namely the Nvidia splash screen
appearing for a few seconds (meaning that the driver is working?) and
then the server crashing. Maybe there's something hanging around on
my system that's interfering, but I don't know what. Anyway, it's
working now with the 190.53 driver (installed using the nvidia
installer) and the 2.6.26 kernel, so I'm happy for now!

You need to modify the whitelist of the source code of s2ram to allow your
machine to suspend and resume without any special options. Normally the
recompilation and reinstallation of uswsusp is inevitable, but I found
this trick works without a recompilation:

 echo '/usr/sbin/s2ram -f -a 1' /usr/local/sbin/s2ram
 chmod 755 /usr/local/sbin/s2ram
 hash -r
 hibernate-ram

As for combining suspend to disk with suspend to RAM, with
uswsusp, you should use s2both. You can also call s2both from the
hibernate script (with all its richness of options), resorting to
the ususpend-both.conf method. Please note that s2both works only
if s2ram works in your system. There is no way to force it to
work if your laptop model is not whitelisted in s2ram, including
the above and similar tweaking, because s2both duplicates s2ram's
functionality instead of calling it. You have to modify the
whitelist source code to allow your machine for s2ram to suspend
and resume without any special options.

See Suspend to RAM
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Suspend_to_RAM
for instructions about how to whitelist your laptop in the local
copy of s2ram and how to report that your laptop suspend to ram
properly so that it is whitelisted in the next uswsusp release.

I assume that you are using the default GNOME desktop.
The way it's *supposed* to work is that the FIRST TIME
you open a root terminal since starting the GNOME desktop
it will prompt you for the administrative password. On
the pop-up window where you are prompted for the administrative
password is a check box labeled Remember password.
By default, the box is checked. If you uncheck the box,
it will prompt you for the administrative password every time
you open a root terminal. This is the safest procedure.
But if you leave the box checked, it will only prompt the
first time. Subsequent openings of root terminal will be
granted access without supplying a password. If you logout
of the GNOME desktop and then login again, it will prompt
for the administrative password again. Just make sure
that you uncheck the box marked Remember password and it
 will prompt you every time.

OK, the password issue is solved. Now I open a root terminal
and it asks for the password, I enter it
and the root terminal terminates. Never a dull moment in Linux.
However, I can just su in a regular terminal so no big deal.
And it asks for the root password elsewhere. So Thanks a lot.

 Thank you,
 Norm

You're obviously new around here, so let me clue you in on how
things are done around here.

Rule number 1: always reply, as
well as post, to the list: never to an individual. The only time
you should send an e-mail to an individual is if you feel compelled
to say something that you wouldn't want seen in public. But be
careful about that. You're asking for free help; so flaming
somebody is counter-productive to your goals. If you are not
subscribed to the list and want a reply sent to your personal
e-mail as well as the list, explicitly request that in your post.
Otherwise, we will post only to the list and if you neglect to
check back on the list, you will never see our replies. I will
CC you this time, but after that I won't unless you request it
on each post.

Rule number 2: do not top post. Instead, use the usenet style
of quoting. For more information on that see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_posting

I spent a fair amount of time re-formatting this message in
usenet style. Don't make us do that.

Rule number 3: Keep lines of ordinary text prose to under 80
characters long. Actually, it's better to keep it somewhat
shorter so that the greater than signs used for quoting and
nested quoting won't later extend those lines past 80 columns.

Rule number 4: use plain text only, not HTML.

Rule number 5: always say Thank you when someone helps you.
You got that part right. And if it weren't for that I might have
ingored your subsequent post.

For additional rules, see the Debian Mailing list policy:

http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/

OK, now that we have these logistical issues down (I hope) we
can get on to the problem.

OK, the password issue is solved.
 Thank you,
 Norm

You're welcome.

Now I open a root terminal
and it asks for the password, I enter it
 and the root terminal terminates.

Hmm. I've never seen this before. Forgive me for asking a dumb
question, but you didn't click on the Cancel button instead of
the OK button, did you? That's exactly the behavior I would
expect to see if you clicked on the Cancel button. It works
fine for me if I simply hit the Enter key after typing the password
or if I click on the OK button. I wouldn't ask this question,
except that you have already shown a propensity for not paying
too much attention to what is on the screen (like the check box
for Remember password). :-)

(II) RADEONHD(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel

And further in the file:

(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable

But the agpart is loaded:

panoramix:/home/jkr# lsmod | grep agp
amd64_agp 6814 0
agpgart24733 3 ttm,drm,amd64_agp

Does anyone has any idea of how to get (hardware) acceleration working?

I just did another update, here it is:

Note that I have aliased apt-cache policy in my .bashrc
as policy.

It seems that wicd has migrated to squeeze/testing since we started this
discussion. One thing I have noticed in the last 4-6 months though is
that there seems to be more packages entering testing that fail
apt-listbugs then there used to be.

So to test that, I tried apt-listbugs, which I recall had it's own bugs

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  python-urwid{u}
The following packages will be upgraded:
  wicd
1 packages upgraded, 3 newly installed, 1 to remove and 12 not upgraded.

That is version 1.7.0-2.

As I am not having a problem with my current version, I won't upgrade
wicd for a while. You, on the other hand, can do an aptitude update and
then safe-upgrade and, it might have been fixed. I say might because it
just migrated and I am leery of packages coming into testing, as I
mentioned above.

Thanx a mil Wayne

It depends on your laptop. We can't figure that out for you. You

I would not put all 3 dists in sources.list. That could/would cause
quite some mess. testing/unstable is bad enough but you should be
 careful using it.

I thought if you set up apt-pinning in /etc/apt/preferences that
should be possible without any major problems?

You've got to remember a few things when running a mixed system:

1. Debian policy is to maintain the ABI for libraries that keep the same
SONAME, but sometimes packages headed for unstable/experimental break this,
usually unintentionally. If it is an important library, this can really mess
with your system stability (i.e. lack of crashes).

2. Downgrades are not supported, and can't really be. Once you've pulled in a
package from testing/unstable you can't go back, and as that package has new
version released, it may gradually need more dependencies from
testing/unstable. For some packages you can PURGE and then reinstall a lower
version, but doing the purge can be difficult if you have other packages that
depend on it. I've done some normal package downgrades before, but I got
lucky and they worked; I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

3. Just because a package says it will work with the libraries in stable
doesn't always mean it will. Humans do the packaging and they make mistakes.
Since most packages are uploaded to unstable (and migrate to testing/stable
through other means), they are tested against a pure unstable system. Even
packages that are uploaded specifically to testing (rare) or stable(-proposed-
updates), aren't tested on a mixed system, but rather a pure testing or pure
stable system.

4. apt-listbugs is your friend, particularly when you are upgrading a package
from stable - testing or testing - unstable. You don't have to let every
bug hold you back, but you should be selective about which bugs you install.

5. apt-cache policy is invaluable in making sure your /etc/apt/preferences
file is provided the level of mix you want.

In short, you are in potentially dangerous and completely unsupported waters.
The mix of testing/unstable is fairly well tested and documented in
apt_preferences(5). Using stable + backports is very safe, even without
pinning (backports pins itself to priority 1). Using unstable + experimental
is how experimental was designed (it doesn't have every package) so it is as
safe as using experimental packages ever is.

Something like my stable/backports/testing/unstable/experimental mix is well
beyond unsupported, at least in theory. In practice it has been no harder to
maintain that any other Debian system, and I've been able to use the same
resources I ever did.

I recommend it for advanced users that are comfortable working with the
interactive dependency resolver in aptitude, but with the warnings above in
mind.

 I use sysfs.conf:

If you have the cpufrequtils package installed, then just edit

I don't have the cpufrequtils package installed.

The cpufrequtils package adds programs which directly set

you don't need to use the /sys filesystem manually.

I don't think it's a good idea. Because if in your example sendmail is

When security is a concern, and it should, configure IPTABLES after

It depends on what you'll be using the system for.
I have Debian Samba PDC with DHCP and DNS: I really don't want this to
update just like that. Everything depends on it.

If it's your local desktop, it doens't really matter. But then you don't
have to automate it because you can do it at logon or whatever.

Thank you for the answer. So this is a bad idea for the tasks I agree
with you, I didn't see the things this way. But for the base system

too? Why would it be bad idea to have the new packages (which now have

one of the 3 priorities) automatically proposed respectively for install

Sometimes, it will stay disconnected (the above reconnected). I need to

 when I was running pptp.
 * * * *
Your new post indicates that you now know to use ifup.

 You're welcome.

As for your new problem, it looks like your DHCP server is set up to
hand out 1 hour leases. If the DHCP server is built in to the router,
as is often the case, that comes down to reconfiguring your router.
You want a fairly long lease time. You also want a fair amount of
time between when a lease is released (or when connectivity is lost)
and when that IP address is made available for reuse.

Of course, much thanks for all the informative replies!

This one probably hits it. The question is how to reconfigure? I have found no
configure http or anything else. This router is a WAN to ethernet and two VOIP
phone channels made by Audiocodes. No information. The provider is Linux-
illiterate. (A separate box xlates ADSL to the WAN cable.)

If you are not using avahi, run
invoke-rc.d avahi-daemon stop
and check whether you still have this problem.

I do not know why I have avahi. Seems to come with recent KDE/HAL stuff. One
more useless daemon but I doubt the cause of the problem. It just sits on the
DHCP calls.

BTW, the new format 3.0 (quilt) that several packages have already

Once I have clicked, I can hear sound, and sometimes see an image from
the flash being played, but nothing more. The whole Iceweasel becomes
unresponsive, and I am obliged to kill the process. If I do not kill
it, it begins to stall completely, and freezes.

Any idea?

|
|Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian

|New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular

b) Install it in the first sector of a partition - this is my

My preferred solution too. An additional bonus is that you get rather
robust, self-contained partitions: they don't depend on any Grubs
residing on other partitions, so are completely impervious to you
reformatting other partitions, or installing new systems on them, or
whatever. In fact, as you rightly point out, even in the remote case
that all your partitions save one get somehow borked, you just have to
enable the surviving partition and the

computer will boot by just marking it with the boot-flag. I know,
it's a

It may be a bit messy, but is also very clean and simple to maintain.

That's a question I'm very much interested in too. I've always been

is still a trade secret for AMD. So the messy, buggy, tainted fglrx

Actually, for day-to-day use, toggling the boot flags may be a bit
impractical ... If you only have a smallish number of partitions, it
may be more practical to add a couple of chainloading stanzas to your
various Grubs, so that you can call any Grub (any partition) from any
other Grub (partition). At least that's what I do.

Well I dropped all the rules from iptables and that made no difference.

What would be in /etc/hosts that might cause problems with this one site (I
visit 25 or so sites everyday)?

Just got this:

127.0.0.1 localhost isengard.localdomain isengard
192.168.0.2 isengard.localdomain

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Truth be told I can't remember what inspired me to put those IPv6 lines in there
but I assume they are beneficial :)

What should I be checking out as far as the DNS provider is concerned?

As for other programs that might affect it, no I don't think there are any.

One of the previous replies mentioned:

By the way, it seems the domain name has not defined an alias for www
so when you query for it, it cannot resolve:

s...@stt008:~$ host www.trade2win.com
Host www.trade2win.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

So that could be contributing but I don't know why just my connection is
affected.
