Es una Intel, supongo que tendrás activada la aceleración 3D (puedes 
comprobarlo con glxinfo | grep -i render).

 Y antes de tener el inconveniente que me obligó a reinstalar todo,
 andaba.

 Eso es lo que me pone frenético.

¿Te funcionaba la misma versión de GE que tienes ahora con la misma 
versión que tienes ahora de Debian? Si es así es que te falta algo por 
instalar.

Mira a ver si ejecutando gksu googleearth te dice lo mismo.

Depurar aplicacion desde entorno grafico.

Buenas tardes a todos.

Hace algún tiempo, alguien publico en la lista un método, o paquete
que permite depurar los mensajes que produce una aplicación gráfica,
desde el mismo entorno gráfico.
Sin necesidad de iniciar la aplicacion desde consola.

El detalle, es, no encuentro el enlace en los archivos de la lista,
evidentemente, mi memoria me falla y no planteo las palabras
adecuadas.

¿Alguien tendrá una luz al respecto?

Cómo compartir archivos en la red

Hola lista, por adelantado me disculpan por pedir ayuda aquí, ya he
lanzado mi necesidad en Linux Mint Español y no me responden. Conozco que
Debian es el Padre de Mint.

Estoy usando Linux Mint 12. Dispongo de una red local donde pude inir las
estaciones Mint 12 a mi dominio Ubuntu server 10.04. Estuve tratando de
compartir algunas carpetas en diferentes estaciones mint y no puedo
acceder desde otras PCs.

Tratando de conseguirlo me fui al menú de inicio Mint:

All applications -- Personal file Sharing

Me sale una ventana donde la opción -- Compartir archivos en la red
(Share public files on network) está tenue, o sea deshabilitada.

Sin embargo en esta misma ventana las otras opciones: -- Compartir por
Bluetooth y -- Recibir archivos por Bluetooth (Están habilitadas)

Pudiera alguien explicarme qué hacer, o sea lo que quiero es que desde
otra estación de trabajo que esté en el dominio (llámase windows o linux)
pueda acceder a mis carpetas compartidas dentro de mi red local.

Se aceptan todas las sugerencias.

Los mensajes de las aplicaciones iniciadas sin terminal se guardan en
~/.x-session-errors

Como quieres compartir con máquinas windows, debes probar la samba... ¡Ojo!, 
no me refiero al baile:

Es posible que si instalas Samba en el Mint te aparezca habilitado lo de 
(Share public files on network).

Sucede que a veces, y no estoy regañando a nadie, damos por hecho que las  
personas tienen un cierto nivel de conocimiento y entonces cuando les  
aconsejamos hacer algo pues no nos entienden. Sumemos a esto que no tengo  
internet, así que tengo mi cacharrito(P-III con lenny) en casa y la  
conectividad un poco lejos, en el hospital universitario donde trabajo.


Me aconsejaron hacer dos cosas:

1. Instalar console-setup.

2. dpkg-reconfigure console-data.

Primero probé con la segunda pero resultó que cuando reiniciaba permanecía  
la fuente pero no el mapa seleccionado.


Luego, después de haber instalado el paquete console-setup, el cual me  
aconsejó Carlos Zuniga, pero infiriendo por la noche, hacer lo siguiente:


dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

es que llegué al resultado tanto anhelado  :)

Así que os dejo una breve nota para los que vienen detrás, si porque  
seguramente muchos hispanos aquí tienen lenny instalado, con los acentos y  
la eñe funcionando muy bien en X, y en su consola pero... a que no les  
funciona igual en modo texto, eh?  :)

dpkg-reconfigure console-setup

con esta herramienta se puede configurar todas las características del  
teclado para trabajar en modo texto. Para ello se deben hacer varias  
selecciones, para algunas de las cuales dejé las por defecto:


1. Modelo del teclado: Generic 105-key (Intl) PC
2. Origen del teclado: USA
3. Capa del teclado: USA - Internacional (con teclas muertas)
4. AltGr key replacement: No AltGr key  //por defecto
5. Compose key: Sin tecla modificadora //por defecto
6. Codificación de la consola: UTF-8   //por defecto
7. Grupo de caracteres que debe ser soportadas por la consola: Latino1 y  
Latino5 - Europa Occidental y lenguas Turcas  //por defecto

8. Cara de la fuente(font face) para la consola: Terminus  //por defecto
9. Tamaño de la fuente para la consola: 14
10. Consolas virtuales en uso: /dev/tty[1-6]  //por defecto

Estos pasos me permitieron configurar un teclado AOpen inglés de 107  
teclas para trabajar en español.


Anteriormente había usado la herramienta console-data(dpkg-reconfigure  
console-data) pero cuando reiniciaba la PC se perdían las configuraciones.


Qué os parece?  ;)

pues eso, que cuando ejecuto el comando lo hace y me informa que lo

pero cuando reinicio la pc vuelve como antes: ni tilde ni eñes  :(

Esta es la salida,

y nada más. Y en verdad lo hace, solo que no retiene el nuevo mapa  
cuando inicia, y sin embargo si retiene el cambio que hace en la fuente.



y debajo el mapa, algo como un iso...

y no pone ningún error.

Y en verdad hace un cambio pues cuando pruebas los acentos y la eñe,  
antes de reiniciar, los tiene, pero cuando inicias nuevamente mantiene  
la fuente pero no retiene el cambio del mapa.

Saludos, hace poco me he instalado la última versión de OpenSUSE y he  
tenido la ocasión de probar GNOME 3.
El resultado ha sido horrible y estoy totalmente de acuerdo con Linus  
Torvalds (a los 2 minutos me he instalado Xfce).
En Debian Squeeze estoy genial con GNOME 2, pero ¿se sabe si en Wheezy se  
incluirá ya GNOME 3?

xawtv sin audio imagen con saltos al ver pantalla completa en debian wheezy

Buenas tardes Debianeros:


Tengo intalado en mi equipo de escritorio sin acceso a internet debian
wheezy, es un equipo con 512 de ram y  athlon 1.2 Mhz de nucleo
sencillo, le tengo xfce4 y la tarjeta de television bien configurada.
quiero ver la television y grabar programas de forma automatica con cron.

Le instale xawtv y tvtime, con los dos veo la tv, pero con xawtv no me
aparece el audio por ningun lado, le doy a mute, reviso el mixer, pero
se que esta bien porque con tvtime se escucha perfecto.
Como hago para que se escuche el audio?.

la segunda parte de mi pregunta es porque al dejar la imagen en tamaño
mayor 720 o pantalla completa la imagen empieza a ralentisarce y va
como a saltos, lo digo porque antes estaba funcionando perfecto con un debian
etch y xawtv funcionaba a pantalla completa de forma fluida y con
audio, pero por inquieto me dio por cambiar a wheezy y me complique la
vida.
La pregunta es: será porque no esta bien configurada la tarjeta
grafica o me falta algún parametro por configurar de los programas con
los que veo
la televisión, ya que me pasa lo mismo con xawtv y tvtime ?


si se debe a la configuracion Gráfica, tengo una tarjeta Nvidia riva
TNT2, funciona la parte grafica, pero no se como indicarle a Debian el driver
a usar, he leido que con nouveau funciona.

como se que driver  esta usando ?

como le indico que driver use, por ejemplo nouveau o nv en /usr/share/X11/,
tengo xorg 7?

Tengo wheezy en una notebook y en una de las actualizaciones migro a *eso*
¿cuál es la necesidad de arreglar algo que no estaba roto? :-P

Bueno, cuestión de gustos. Yo pienso lo contrario de Linus. De hecho
después de probar el Gnome 3 de Debian no vuelvo atrás.

En wheezy, la testing actual, lo que hay ya es Gnome 3, por lo cual

Corroborar como usuario de hace ya 20 años con Linux y de hace varias 
semanas con Gnome 3 y en concreto con Gnome 3.2 en Testing que están 
llegandos los paquetes no termino de ver este modelo de shell para 
una persona que trabaje sus 8 horas.


Otro más en el club de Xfce. La próxima imagen Debian que descargue va a 
ser la que lleve el escritorio Xfce,, que creo que la he visto en la web.

Esto, aunque no lo creas, no es ninguna credencial, y tu opinión no gana
peso por decirlo ni desde luego quita mérito al trabajo de los
desarrolladores de gnome, que aunque la mayoría no llevarán 20 años con
linux, es poco creíble pues linux apenas tiene 20 años de vida, seguro
han aportado mucho mas que opiniones y valoraciones personales.

Estou tendo problema com uma vmware linux a onde a placa de rede não
esta sendo reconhecida.

A um bom tempo atras montei um servidor LAMP, kernel versão 2.4.xx,
para um cliente. Infelizmente o disco rígido deste servidor começou a
apresentar problema de badblock. Como a versão dos softwares deste
servidor são muito antigas, kernel versão 2.4.x, mysql versão 4.x e
php versão 4.x, não me arrisco a querer fazer a atualização dos
softwares pois vai dar problema. Para isso resolvi virtualizar o
servidor e deixar os softwares com as versões antigas. Para fazer essa
virtualização fiz o seguinte.

1 - conectei um segundo disco rígido no servidor;
2 - dei o boot no servidor através do cd do Ubuntu Rescue Remix;
3 - executei o comando ddrescue e criei um arquivo com a imagem do
disco rígido com defeito, ddrescue /dev/hda /mnt/img/server.IMG;
4 - desconectei o disco rígido do servidor com problema e conectei no
servidor novo;
5 - criei uma máquina virtual do zero;
6 - executei o comando ddrescue no sentido inverso, da imagem para o
disco rígido virtual, ddrescue /mnt/img/server.IMG /dev/sda;

Todo o processo ocorreu com sucesso exceto a placa de rede. O servidor
esta subindo normalmente mas infelizmente a placa de rede não esta
sendo reconhecida/carregada. Eu estou imaginando que o linux virtual
não esteja reconhecendo a placa de rede ou o módulo referente a essa
placa de rede virtual não esta sendo reconhecida. Alguém por acaso
teria alguma ideia do que pode esta ocorrendo?

do xen hypervisor deixar de ser free ou  vir a ser uma solução de
nível baixo? Seria mais cômodo e inteligente eu passar a adotar o
Citrix Xenserver que é uma versão free que a própria Citrix
disponibiliza? Há o risco de um dia a Citrix deixar de
disponibilizar a versão free do xenserver? Pergunto isto pois me
preocupa muito a idéia de eu implementar uma das duas soluções
aqui na empresa e depois de eu estar com um ambiente maduro e
consolidado de virtualizaçõa e não poder mais contar com as
soluções da xen tanto citrix quanto hypervisor que é
disponibilizado nos repositórios do Debian. Outra coisa e por
falar em Debian... sou um usuário satisfeito da distribuição
Debian  e me alegro muito em saber que tudo que pretendo fazer já
encontro pacotes estáveis em seus repositórios. Alguém aqui da

wheezy, mas eu removi os pacotes debian da sun.

 nao recomendo usar o ESXI da vmware , apesar de ainda utilizalo, mas por
 exemplo fazer backup das maquinas virtuais e um parto, tem que achar um
 software que faça, porque para essa versão a vmware se oferece se tu
 comprar o vcenter, eu tambem recomendaria o uso do KVM , conheço outros
 administradores que tem os ambientes todo virtualizado com essa suluçao,
 inclusive em cluster.

Estou escrevendo esta mensagem de um netbook com Debian SIND com LXDE,
conectado pela Claro 3G pré-paga

Vamos lá:

1) faça o modem ser reconhecido
2) ajuste o wvdial
3) faça a conexão e seja feliz

Mande a marca/modelo de seu modem que eu mando a receita completa,
incluirdo o arquivos de configuração necessários. Tô viajando esta
semana mas estarei no Serpro na sexta, se preferir leva pra lá qua
gente faz a bagaça funcionar antes da festa da ASES

 de cd não é a mais completa.Será que existe um pacotão que tenha
 incluído os pacotes necessários para a configuração da internet
 3G?Estou fazendo está pergunta pois eu não tenho como acessar internet
 que não seja o meu aparelho de telefone celular e se este pacotão
 existir seria bem mais fácil de fazer o download.

Vc já viu se não tem nenhum script qnd vc conecta o modem, eu passei
por isso com um modelo mais novo da Huawei, no novo não funciona a lá
windows, mas tinha um script lá que não tive saco para botar para
funcionar. No mais velho que eu uso ele funciona de boa, o debian
wheezy reconhece e o mobile broadband funciona de boa após umas
configurações iniciais no network-manager. A operadora é TIM

O NetworkManager não gerencia modems. Quem faz isso, e muito mal, e o
ModemManager, que se integra, e muito mal, ao NetworkManager.

Utilizo o Debian 6 Squeeze com um Nokia 5230 para fazer o acesso ao 3G
da Claro. Ao parear o celular ele já da opção de usar o celular como
modem e o network-manager já disponibiliza a interface de configuração,
onde defino a o País e a Operadora.

Depois do primeiro pareamento já fica uma opção Claro Default como
redes disponíveis, daí é só parear e conectar diretamente selecionando
essa rede para pode utilizar o 3G.

Uso o Gnome E não instalei nenhum pacote específico para que funcione.

Conforme meu email tenter dizer que a Citrix como decisão estrategica pode não dar continuidade ao desenvolvimento do Xen como uma solução para produção corporativa, deixando o protudo atual "como esta". Lembra da novela RedHat? ele era free deixou de ser, a empresa percebeu a perda de clientes a conectiva entrou na história, mas muita gente ficou de cabelo em pe na epoca deste reboliço.Não sou defensor do VMWare, mas tambem sou gerente de TI e sei o que é ter superiores que não entendem nada da area tecnologica presionando pela solução que ira economizar $$$ para a empresa, solução essa que claro, voce mesmo apresentou em alguma reunião, apenas como uma alternativa a ser analisada, ainda sem prazos. hypervisor deixar de ser free ou vir a ser uma solução de
nível baixo? Seria mais cômodo e inteligente eu passar a
adotar o Citrix Xenserver que é uma versão free que a
própria Citrix disponibiliza? Há o risco de um dia a Citrix
deixar de disponibilizar a versão free do xenserver?
Pergunto isto pois me preocupa muito a idéia de eu
implementar uma das duas soluções aqui na empresa e depois
de eu estar com um ambiente maduro e consolidado de
virtualizaçõa e não poder mais contar com as soluções da xen
tanto citrix quanto hypervisor que é disponibilizado nos

sou um usuário satisfeito da distribuição Debian e me

Muito obrigado Srs. Felipe e Jaques!

Pelo que estou observando, acredito que devem ter poucas pessoas que tenham
implementado virtualizações com o Debian rodando o Xen-hypervisor do
próprio repositório. Estou muito reticente em implementar o Xenserver da
Citrix mas andei lendo algo sobre o XCP e vou ler mais sobre o KVM. Algum
dos senhores já implementou algum server com virtualização no Debian?.

 nao recomendo usar o ESXI da vmware , apesar de ainda utilizalo, mas por
 exemplo fazer backup das maquinas virtuais e um parto, tem que achar um
 software que faça, porque para essa versão a vmware se oferece se tu
 comprar o vcenter, eu tambem recomendaria o uso do KVM , conheço outros
 administradores que tem os ambientes todo virtualizado com essa suluçao,
 inclusive em cluster.

Se o seu não for reconhecido por driver nenhum, tente fazer 
modprobe cdc_acm e depois echo idVendor idProduct  
/sys/bus/usb/drivers/cdc_acm/new_id, se reconhecer, vai aparecer o no 
final do dmesg. Também vale o mesmo para o módulo do kernel usbserial, 
que cria /dev/ttyUSB0.


Reconhecido, pode usar o pppd para conectar ou o wvdial, 
ambos em modo texto.


Em modo gráfico tem os discadores, kppp ou gnome-ppp, devem ter 
outros.


Se tiver o pacote netwok-manager em conjunto com o 
modemmanager, quando criada uma interface GSM o modemmanager criar uma 
entrada no D-Bus, o qual o netwok-manager fica monitorando e cria um 
meio de configurar o modem de forma fácil.


Uso o Gnome com que já instala os pacotes modemmanager, 
network-manager e network-manager-gnome (applet), onde este último cria 
um ícone na área de notificação e permite gerenciar os network-manager 
para qualquer rede, com fio, sem fio ou GSM, muito prático, simples e fácil.


O grande segredo está em definir a APN, que para o caso da 
Claro 3G linha de dados pós-pago e pré-pago (usa-se apenas no modem ou 
celular para navegar, não usado para falar), é 
bandalarga.claro.com.br, já para linhas de voz (usa-se no celular para 
falar), seja pós-pago ou pré-pago, é claro.com.br ou 
java.claro.com.br, dentre outras variações que funcionam. Para outras 
operadoras tem seus segredos também, procure na internet que tem de rodo 
isso.


No caso do network-manager, usando chip de dados escolhe-se 
Claro 3G e usando chip de voz escolhe-se Claro Padrão que ele 
configura a APN de boa.


Nos discadores, seja wvdial, kppp ou gnome-ppp, tem que 
introduzir a linha de inicialização (init):


AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,bandalarga.claro.com.br

Primeiramente eu gostaria de agradecer aos colegas China, P,J, e ao
xará Leandro Stein, muito obrigado mesmo.Quanto ao modelo do meu modem
é o seguinte, é um HUAWEI  Mobile Broadband E1553, com relação às
configurações a serem feitas eu acredito China que vou ter um pouco de
dificuldade pois alguns pacotes como Wvdial por exemplo não são
instalados por default (pelo menos a release que eu estou utilizando
não vem na instalação default) e é justamente por isso que estou a
procura de uma pacote que contenha estes softwares como o próprio
Wvdial e afins já que estou conectado a partir do meu celular
entende?!Bom, de qualquer forma eu vou continuar pesquisando e
testando algumas alternativas portanto se alguém souber de alguma
coisa por favor me informem, desde já agradeço a todos.

PS: China eu também estou fora da empresa está semana, se até semana
que vem eu não conseguir resolver eu vou aceitar a sua ajuda sim,
muito obrigado.

debian e com essa versão de kernel?

Bom vc segui direitinho a documentação? Tipo instalou os headers?

Tipo eu uso no debian wheezy(testing) e com a versão 3.1.0-1-686-pae
do kernel e o pacote do repositório debian está funcionando
normalmente, os pacotes que eu tenho instalado além dos headers são
esses:

$ dpkg -l | grep virtualbox

Também quero essa ajuda, apesar de já ter conseguido instalar o meu modem 1
vez, da claro também, o problema, é que me empolguei tanto que esqueci de
fazer as anotações dos pacote necessários...nunca me perdoei por isso

so lembro que fiz a instalação de vários pacotes, os que eu me lembro foram
o GCC, binutils, e outros pacotes debiancomo eu consegui ?
simpleseu pluguei meu modem 3g num Ubuntu que tinha aqui no trampo.
como o PC estava em rede, ele automaticamente ja mostrou os pacotes e ja
fez o processo de instalação automatico tipo, eu nao lembro a versao do
Ubuntu (caramba, que ki eu tenho na cabeça man ?) dai que ki eu
fiz...so fiz apt-get install PACOTES no meu notebook que tava ao lado
usando a mesma rede.kkkdepois disso funfou que é uma
beleza. mas como disse antes, nao anotei nada observação: Ele
instalou o software que vem com o modem, o MobilePartner, o software que
faz a conexão e etcnão usei wvdial e variantes


Obrigado e no aguardo pela ajuda de como instalar esse modem :D (o meu
modem é E173, mas acredito que seja similar o processo de instalação, pois
é da mesma fabricante).

aptitude autoupdating.

Good time of the day.


I have put to cron auto update of a system by aptitude.

As parameters I set safe-upgrade and 'yes' to all questions - so that
packages might be installed itself in case of config. questions, etc.

Now I think it will not be secure in case there is a problem w/ public
key of a maintainer - it probably will accept BAD key also.

So, my question is, What is the proper way of at one hand to get
automation of upgrade process, at the other - to remain the upgraded
system safe?!

Run netstat as root to see the PIDs and program names of everything,
otherwise it will only show you that data for processes you own.

If you also use the -n flag, it will run much faster as it won't do DNS
or service name lookups. Some of the service names may be misleading
anyway, as they are looked up from a file. The program name is more
useful.

So I have done, but shows empty results. Whereas tcpdump - traffic
present.

Strange disk performance issue

Hi list,
hoping for help, I'm experiencing a strange performance issue on debian
squeeze. The host is running 2.6.32-5-amd64 on a Xen enterprise cluster,
filesystem lies on a NetApp storage mounted using ISCSI. Other virtual
hosts on that cluster does not have the same performance problems.

As soon as I start to copy i.e. a 2GB file local or to a remote host,
the iowait is rising and the host feels jerking.

sar reports %iowait  60

Activating block_dump for a minute (echo 1  /proc/sys/vm/block_dump)
shows me that the process causing the iowait is jbd2 which is part of
the ext4 filesystem.

Any ideas howto tweak the fs for better performance?

--inet so you are looking at network sockets rather than unix
sockets, -a shows both established connections and listening
processes, -p shows PID and process name.

What do you mean? It certainly tells you what has a current
connection, and what is listening. If there are no current connections
it will not show anything, although you could maybe use -c to
get it to repeat every second. It is true it does not show individual
packets, but you don't need that to know what program is sending.
What output do you get from it?

The problem is it does not tell me anything - being run under root
(sudo). This is all I get:

netstat --inet -ap -n

Active Internet connections (servers and established)

Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address   Foreign Address
State   PID/Program name

The ones that mention localnet.domain are DNS queries
ICMP6 is the IPv6 version of ICMP (Ping and other control messages)
IGMP is used for multicast control
and finally, 6881 is the port for BitTorrent

OK. But how I can find the processes IDs?

For I have closed all the user's network app.s - still the machine
connects to Internet - sends queries to DNS, bittorrent - while the
user does not ask for it any more.

So, I gonna find out who does all this work.

Why tcpdump habitually uses a dot to separate the port number
(or service name, like .domain) instead of the standard colon, I
don't know.

That's OK - I recognize it. :)

If you want to see the port number instead of the service name
(e.g. 53 instead of domain), use the -n (numeric) option on
tcpdump (and netstat for that matter). If you don't know a port
number, google port yyy.

The general rule of thumb is to automatically update only workstations
and test servers, never production servers.

There is no way that automation can know whether it is wise to apply a
particular update immediately, to wait a while, or not do it at all in
cases of serious error. While errors (in Stable, at least) are extremely
rare, the cost to a production server could be enormous.

My preference is to run a simulated update early in the morning and
email the result to me. I decide later whether to carry out the
update or not. I don't believe that is part of an admin's job that can
or should be automated away.

clipit copy-paste problem.

Good time of the day.


I experience problems w/ clipit - I want it to make ready to be pasted
everything I select w/ mouse - but clipit does it so not always - how I
can solve this?

I'm new using it - I just try to use another that from KDE clipboard -
since I moved from KDE to LXDE and KDE's clipboard was hanging often.

Or may You can recommend another one for my situation?

You do realise that bittorrent is a peer-to-peer service, don't you?
It is a server as well as a client, and I don't think you need to look
any further.

particular update immediately, to wait a while, or not do it at all in
cases of serious error. While errors (in Stable, at least) are

So, in case of workstations, we have no options besides these two:
either risk or manual update - these are the options?

For production servers I have a small script** that alerts me via e-mail when there are new updates
to install. I run this script nightly on at least one production server per type server I have. In
the weeken I run it on alle servers just to make sure I do not forget to update a server.

On the first production server of a certain type I run the script manualy to see which prompts, if
any, there are. If I see no strange things I can fire the automated update script on the other
servers. HOW you do that is different per situation. I have a small enough number of servers per
type that I can simply have a small script on my Windows workstation that does a remote launch using
the plink command (from the PuTTY suite) per server.

Can I remove gnome-keyring?

There is currently a bug in gnome-keyring which keeps throwing up an
error message about no socket to connec to. I don't know why I have
this package, given that I don't use gnome (or any other desktop
manager). Will anything dreadful happen if I remove it?

Are you running Stable, Testing, or Unstable?

What does your /etc/apt/sources.list file look like?

If you are running Testing or Unstable, from my experience, meta
packages are broken from time to time due to the constant changing of
individual packages...such as the devs uploading one package that is
newer than the rest so the meta breaks until they upload the entire
group.

apt-cache rdepends gnome-keyring will tell you the reverse dependencies 
for the package.

 Will anything dreadful happen if I remove it?

If it is installed because of a required dependency coming from another 
package you can't remove it without pain :-)

If the package came through a recommended dependency and you nor other 
program or libray are making use of it, there should be no problems to 
remove it.

I don't know how it got there. But wajig show-remove indicates that
nothing else will be removed so I guess it will be all right.

If an application does not behave as it should, I would report it. Try to

Copying of web pages by Firefox

article which I clicked on. KDE loaded firefox (which is my
default browser), but instead of giving me the web page, it
copied the web-page of the link into
/var/tmp/kdecache-sian/krun/13950.0.iu.html
Unfortunately, most of the links in the page are reference a file
in /var/tmp/kdecache-sian/krun/ which I do not have.

How can I prevent Firefox copying the web-page? And why does it
do it?

I might note that the newsgroup is soc.culture.esperanto and the
web page is in Esperanto using UTF-8.

Disappearance of the Debian menu item in KDE menu

When I first loaded Debian wheezy from a NETINST CD and after
packages were downloaded, the KDE menu had a Debian menu item which
gave me access to those programs which did not appear in the
KDE menu. For example, xkill.

That menu item has disappeared. In the menu editor, the item
appears, but there is nothing in it.

How do I get the Debian menu item back?

That's a weird place for Firefox to save temporary files :-?

From what kind of client (newsreader) did you load the URL? Maybe you 
have to instruct your reader how to handle http://; protocol and links 
inside it or maybe is just the URI source (.html) was embedded in the 
message and thus the newsreader thought it was a file to be save 
somewhere...

Try to load the newsgroup messages with another nntp client to see if you 
can mimic the same behaviour.

OEM Install

Is there a way to install a server installation to be an OEM
installation.  For example, I'm going to start to have many VM instances
of Debian and it would be a more simple task to install it once, OEM it,
and then copy the VM image then to do an install over and over again.
These VMs will basically be the same and adding packages is rather
simple if I need to.

Ext4 isn't the source of the problem but simply the messenger in this
case.  Try the deadline and noop elevators and see if that helps.  The

  Squeeze system with vsftpd with default umask, 077.  
  A script file, blah.sh for example, is put to the 
  system.  The file arrives with permissions 600.

PROBLEM
  Each time blah.sh is put on the system, chmod 700 blah.sh 
  can make it executeable.  The ftp client does not 
  provide SITE CHMOD.  What alternatives to the interactive 
  chmod are available?  Is this a job for ACL?

Is there a constraint that you must use ftp?  Because it is terrible
for this context of PUTting a file.  It sends passwords in the clear
for a start and therefore is completely insecure.

This would be much better for rsync over ssh.  Start using rsync using
the -a option to preserver everything including permissions.

about aptitude and apt-mark, but both come from non-essential packages.

I am not aware of a dedicated program utility to do this that is
always available.  However $EDITOR and editor are always available and
they work.

To unmark a package as automatically installed.

  # editor /var/lib/apt/extended_states

Then find the package that you wish to change and take one of two
actions:

1) If the package is already listed in the file then modify the
   Auto-Installed: setting.  It would only be in there if the package
   had been installed as an automatic dependency and so normally that
   would be flipping the 1 to a 0.  It would be possible to remove the
   entry completely.

2) If the package is not already listed then it is known to be
   manually installed.  Create an entry to mark it as automatically
   installed.

Using Debian Wheezy updated to today.

I get this message if I try to start any KDE applications:

KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being 
   recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake 
   component, this usually means you tried to call i18n 
   related functions before your main component was created. 
   You should not do that since it most likely will not work

So I have purged everything that I know has any connection with KDE.

However, there are still 201 processes working and four users and I
don't recall this activity previously.

Funny, I liked KDE but in the last few years it has turned toxic for
me. So many things went wrong with it again and again, I spent more
time fixing than doing. But I must still have some KDE things on my
machine.

Have used FVWM for the last few years.

How can I find any applications that I have which come from KDE so I
can get rid of them.

ETHNO has FTP and SSH.Send but not rsync.  SSH.Send requires 
painfully more time than FTP does.  To obtain rsync, the client 
system would have to be changed.

These systems are inside a VPN used only by me.  No concern for security.

that is while aptitude | apt-get | ... is running?

I guess /var/lib/apt/extended_states is not officially documented, so
its very unlikely but possible that it might change or disappear in the
future?

Ew...  That could be scary!  The short answer is that I don't know.
Certainly an official package would no be allowed to do it.  But would
it work?  I don't know.  Maybe.  I think that postinst time is at a
completely different time from when apt edits that package so it would
probably interlace acceptably.  That would change this suggestion hack
into a serious hack.

Can I ask why you want to do it in a package postinst?  I assumed you
had just wanted to diddle the status of a package or two without
actually removing and reinstalling the package.  But now it sounds
like you want to do something more extensive.  Perhaps it would be
better to do using cfengine, puppet, chef, shell script or other tool.
(I use one of the other tools.)  This just doesn't seem like something
that would work out well in a package.  Sounds like something that
most people might recommend puppet and similar for instead.

Right.  Use of it is entirely within the confines of the apt program
until the authors there decide otherwise.  But the file exists and is
a text file and Unix is all about hacking text files and so I have
hacked on it.  But that doesn't make it the right thing to do.  You
would be completely on your own about it.

That gave me a screen saying, Installing packages, and then stopped
with no action, 0% completed.  Running it with the -t option gave me,
debconf-apt-progress -- aptitude -q -y install task-desktop,
but didn't give me any hints as to what's wrong (at least no hints that
I could take).
