Re: Failed to open VDPAU backend for mplayer2.
Good time of the day, Sven. Thank You for Your time and answer. You worte: Do You have any idea how I can make use of VDPAU w/ mplayer2 on my system (testing, video ATI X1100)? You have to build mesa 8.0 or later with --enable-vdpau yourself. However, it's probably not really worth it, since the mesa drivers currently only implement the P part of VDPAU, while the more interesting D part is only possible with the Nvidia blob. A few weeks ago I tried vdpau with nouveau, and while it works, CPU load is not any lower than with other backends. Besides performance I try to remove CPU 100% while paused on video file - problem . Can You prompt me how I can find out the plans on mesa - whither his/her maintainer would compile his/her package w/ that support - particularly and any other package of interest in general? The installer would have offered you a choice of two interfaces. What were they called? How were they described? To set up a wireless interface you have to provide a WEP password. From what you say you didn't, so it appears unlikely the network was enabled with the wireless device. I think using d-i in expert mode has been mentioned. You already knew this as well, but you've been fighting the switch tooth and nail, screaming but I shouldn't _have to_, it works now, mostly. It's the mostly part that is your current problem. Switch to 64bit with its large flat memory space and you'll be much happier. You can also try by getting Firefox 11 (no installation required) with the latest available version of flash plugin from Adobe and check if that works. USB keyboard problems / USB layout / USB xkbmap
OK, let's write it up properly ;) 1.) During Installation of Wheezy, I had to exchange my Logitech K340 with a PS/2 keyboard in order to install Wheezy as the USB-Keyboard did not react in the installer of Wheezy (although it did in the BIOS and also, interestingly, in Squeeze installer - as a test). Installation went fine, except that I would prefer that if one has choosen the system language (i.e. English), the list appearing later for countries to determine such things as currency etc. consists only of English speaking countries. Contrary, the keyboard could be choosen properly as Swiss German. So, after login (I use GNOME/WHEEZY), my old PS/2 worked properly (i.e. no z and y change or Umlaute such as ä, ö...). Then I attached the Logitech K340 USB keyboard, the keyboard works but the language settings don't, i.e. I have obviously a GB layout. The only way to change this so far is to use: setxkbmap ch After executing this commmand, everything works fine - in the terminal as well as in GNOME, meaning I have the proper layout (I know that there are specific problems with Wheezy and USB keyboards known, and it is suggested to activate Legacy support in the BIOS. I have first to check if I have this option in the BIOS at all. Remark: Ubuntu 10.10 does not have all these problems). 2.) My etc/default/keyboard looks ok: # KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE # Consult the keyboard(5) manual page. XKBMODEL=pc105 XKBLAYOUT=ch XKBVARIANT= XKBOPTIONS=terminate:ctrl_ alt_bksp BACKSPACE=guess 3.) The problem seems to be known, if looking here also in ArchLinux: http://www.loggn.de/arch-linux-xorg-deutsches-tastaturlayout-logitech-k340-tastatur-schnurlos/ If this problem is specific to K340, I do not know. So far I know that setxkbmap ch helps to solve it. How can I automatize this command such that I don't have to enter it after every startup ? In ArchLinux, it was put in autostart of openbox. GNOME has also an autostart, there I put it - but seems not to work (maybe I have to check again). Anyway, also this is not a clean solution. There should be a way to fix that properly. Thanks! ssh sessions with pseudo terminal hang when in kernel events thread hangs
Hi, since about December we see machines where interactive ssh sessions hang or logins are no longer possible. The machine itself is still alive and using ssh without pseudo terminal allocation works fine (ssh -T). What we have so far is that this happens on systems with Linux 2.6.32. (Mostly Debian but we've seen this on one RHEL 6.1 system aswell but there the patch level was too far off to open a support case.) Sometimes ssh logins work for a short time, e.g. you see motd and get no prompt or you can execute a few commands and suddenly it hangs. Pseudo terminals are allocated just fine and device nodes can bee seen in /dev/pts/. When it happens we can see one of the in kernel [events/$x] processes to be in state D and the number of context switches and interrupts goes up by factor 6. Most of those interrupts seem to be generated by hpet on the CPU where the events/$x process is running ($x = number of the CPU/CPU core of this system). Has someone seen a similar behaviour? We currently have no idea how and why it happens. It's all Dell Hardware we're running on (R210, 410, 710). To what purpose? There is no harm in letting inetd run vsftpd. Well back in the old days we had the tradeoff between startup time and RAM capacity. Nowdays we have none of that except for high traffic sites with a lot of connections. As rule of thumb I'd say if you don't know inetd and the benefits you might have, don't use it and simply stop it. In the end you're free to choose but it seems that a running inetd causes some confusion from time to time. RE: apt-get will upgrade aptitude will not
To answer most questions asked: Did you first update the packages database? apt-get update aptitude update apt-get and aptitude both use the same package database. Running the 'udpate' for both of them is not required. I just run apt-get upgrade and said there was nothing to do while running aptitude upgrade wanted to do very (I mean *very*) weird things, such as removing a bunch of packages. After updating aptitude database all went smooth... 1) My systems are all Squeeze. 2) ~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib non-free # Squeeze-updates, previously known as 'volatile' deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze-updates main contrib non-free 3) The last time I ran a full-upgrade was when I upgraded from Lenny. I think this system started out as an Etch system years ago. I'd like to think the aptitude full-upgrade (or apt-get dist-upgrade) is only to be used when doing major upgrades. But ~# aptitude full-upgrade The following packages will be upgraded: mysql-common 1 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 69.6 kB of archives. After unpacking 57.3 kB will be freed. Do you want to continue? [Y/n/?]n 4) The command ~# aptitude search ~ahold gave no output so there are no held packages in aptitude. I tested that the last time just before doing the dist-upgrade and I never hold packages unless there is a VERY good reason. But remember the aptitude upgrade gave No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed. 0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. So there is that ... and 1 not upgraded. In that line. For some reason aptitude will not upgrade that 1 component. 5) Aptitude upgrade with the -v (or -vv or -vvv) switch gives not much more info, just: Current status: 0 broken [+0], 1 update [+0], 16431 new [+0]. 6) ~# apt-cache showpkg mysql-common Package: mysql-common Versions: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 (/var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_squeeze_updates_main_binary-i386_Packages) Description Language: File: /var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_dists_squeeze_updates_main_binary-i386_Packages MD5: 562d254c602f89e4390e28f6362283c8 5.1.49-3 (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.nl.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_binary-i386_Packages) (/var/lib/dpkg/status) Description Language: File: /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.nl.debian.org_debian_dists_squeeze_main_binary-i386_Packages MD5: 562d254c602f89e4390e28f6362283c8 Reverse Depends: libmysqlclient15off,mysql-common 5.0.51a-24+lenny5 mysql-server-5.1,mysql-common 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 mysql-client-5.1,mysql-common 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 libmysqlclient16,mysql-common 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 mysql-server-5.1,mysql-common 5.1.49-3 mysql-client-5.1,mysql-common 5.1.49-3 libmysqlclient16,mysql-common 5.1.49-3 Dependencies: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 - mysql-common-4.1 (0 (null)) mysql-common-4.1 (0 (null)) 5.1.49-3 - mysql-common-4.1 (0 (null)) mysql-common-4.1 (0 (null)) Provides: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1 - mysql-common-4.1 5.1.49-3 - mysql-common-4.1 Reverse Provides: So it seems the update is present on my system and ready to be installed, just not by a normal aptitude upgrade.
