Merci d'avance. De rien. J'espère que cela te sera utile. Favor não responder SPM, ERA Copacabana Temporada ... ou Longa
Prezado(a)s: 1.
Re: DVB-T tuning problem
Thanks linuxlover. I investigated it a bit deeper, and I found several problems and only one little advance. First, I used gnome-dvb-setup and tried to find channels. As I already stated, my region/antenna is not listed on its lists, so I put no information about my country or antenna and it, theoretically, perform a full scan on all the frequencies. It didn't work at all, no channel was found. Then, I tried with scan, but I have the problem that I don't have an input file for scan, so I avoided it at the beginning. As linuxlover stated, I tried with dvbscan, but it has the same problem for me, it needs an input file (different file than scan AFAIK). At the end, I discovered w-scan package, and the w_scan tool. It is able to generate as output the input for scan, dvbscan or a VDR channels.conf directly. I tried first using w_scan -ft -c ES -x for generating an input file for scan/dvbscan (it is intended to work with gnome-dvb-daemon if you put that file on the right directory). The three tools perform an scan, but theynever return me a valid VDR channels.conf (empty files) or was unable to find nothing (gnome-dvb-setup). At the end, I tried to generate the VDR channels.conf using w_scan -ft -c ES vdr_channels.conf. Then, I tried to use that file is gnome-dvb-control [1], but no channel was added and I was unable to see TV through Totem [1] https://live.gnome.org/DVBDaemon/UserGuide P.S. I'm trying gnome-dvb-daemon because I'm interested in adopting this package and I want to know how it works before ITA it. Also you can modify the 'hosts' file on your work computer (/etc/hosts in Linux and c:\windows]system32\drivers\etc\hosts in windows) and put the name of your home computer there. With second approach you'll be able to resolve the name on your work computer only. -- Best regards, Valery Mamonov.

Hi Lisi, What kernel version are you running? 2.6.32-5-686 Thanks for your reply, Lisi there is also another bugreport by me from earlier times. But I guess, this reason might be in older kernels, too. At the moment I am running kernek 3.5 from experimental with no errors at all. However, I think, it is a kernel bug, and is fixed since kernel 3.5. Here is my old bugeport, which is closed (and reopened by the bugreport you already know): http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=687046 At the moment, i know no other solution, than to switch to a running 3.2.0 kernel (see in my bugreport, which ran for me), or use 3.5 from experimental. I will be installing debian-squeeze to its own hard disk (sdb) in a dual boot set-up. The installer ask you, if you want to keep your Win-installation. My partition scheme (that I have not set-up yet and based somewhat on the above link) will be as follows: 1st Partition -- Boot Partition /boot-- Type: Primary -- 500MB -- Ext4 journaling file system -- Location: Beginning Second Partition -- Root Partition / -- Type: Logical -- 15000MB -- Ext4 journaling file system -- Location: Beginning 3rd Partition -- Home Partition /home -- Type: Logical -- 6MB -- Ext4 journaling file system -- Location: Beginning SWAP Area Swap -- Type: Logical -- 2000MB -- Ext4 journaling file system -- Location: Beginning If there is no serious reason I always partition swap + / (all in one root) The experience showed me that overpartitioning is time-consuming later. It depends on the intended usage of the computer how high is the risk of repartioning later. E.g. for a development workstation 10 GB for /usr was to small at Debian Sarge times, because of many large packages installed. Also there was a need to repartition and reinstall my 5 years old netbook (dual boot) to have all in one partition of 60 GB. More on port forwarding(ssh, netcat and amule!)
Hi debianer! I post a question about port forwarding yesterday and got quick reply, big thanks! Now I still have sth. not clear and it can be described as: I have a laptop in my home, which is connected to my router. Yesterday, I succeeded in open a ssh port(22) on router, and start ssh server on my laptop. Now I can access my laptop from office by ssh USER@my_home_external_ip. Also, scan port by using netcat from office: nc -vz my_home_external_ip 22 gives me: Connection to my_home_external_ip port [tcp/ssh] succeeded! Today, I tried to open another port on my router, let me call it 1234. And I set amule on my laptop to use port 1234 for both tcp and udp. Fortunatelly, I got a High ID as expected. And then I got confused. I tried to scan port 1234 from my office: nc -vz my_home_external_ip 1234 it says: nc: connect to my_home_external_ip port 1234 (tcp) failed: Connection refused However, after I remote access my laptop, launch amule on it, netcat now can: Connection to my_home_external_ip 1234 port [tcp/*] succeeded! It seems that, not only on the router, but also I should open a specific port on my laptop, otherwise netcat will not be able to connect from outside my home. I wonder why this happens and what is the mechanism behind it. Is it possible to open a port in debian, without launch certain software so I can netcat from outside to my home laptop? Hello, A port number identifies a process running in your machine, then is implicit that a process must be running and listening on that port. When your netcat try to connect it will probably receives an ICMP packet advertising the Connection Refused or an TCP segment with the flags RST set on. Hope this can help you. Re: Running 32bit OpenGL program with amd64
lee writes: Alberto Luaces writes: lee writes: Francesco Pietra writes: Hello: I would like to continue to use a 32bit graphical program based on OpenGL. It worked well on i386, requiring libXm.so.3 (from libmotif3). Is it conceivable to simply add libXm.so.3 (taken from my dismissed i388 PC) to ia32-libs? If you're running stable, it might work if all dependencies are fulfilled. You could try it out ... In testing, 32bit support is broken, and ia32-libs seems to be deprecated in favour of brokenarch. I had no problems using multiarch in testing and installing the required :i386 packages. I've been using a 32bit application which stopped working when the NVIDIA drivers were updated last time. Correct. The same happened to me. The reasons why it stopped working are unknown, Not quite. The *nvidia-glx-ia32 packages where emptied/obsoleted. See for example http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 . and apparently I would have to switch to brokenarch before having a chance to get it working again. There's no way to tell which i386 packages would need to be installed, and since it doesn't work anyway, there's no point in trying to find out. Yes it is. If you have installed the typical 64-bit .deb package that is actually a 32-bit binary with the ia32-libs package dependency, you can just quickly install the real 32-bit .deb. Then apt-get or aptitude will pull the :i386 dependencies for that :i386 package. This can be done for example, for skype or the Humble Bundle games. If your package is not installed as a .deb file, you would be on your own as well recollecting the appropriate libraries in 32 bit. Nevertheless, you can track which ones are required with the command 'ldd' and the Debian packages page (http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages) This is not a specific multiarch advice, anyway. However, I had to use the nvidia drivers from experimental in order to have working 32-bit OpenGL libraries. I have tried that at least three times now. It doesn't work, causes dependency problems and is difficult to fix once it's messed up. The only tricky part at the time of this writing is to select the right nvidia drivers if you are using them. But as I said, now there is available at the experimental repository a new version that fixes the multiarch problem for OpenGL. Just take care of installing the exact same version of drivers and libraries among the multiple solutions offered to you by the conflict resolution tool in apt-get/aptitude. 32bit support is totally broken, brokenarch totally sucks, and I'm majorly pissed and don't trust Debian anymore. It seems unlikely that the problem will be fixed before the next release is out, and I find it amazing that they will leave the users of stable with this problem and have them find out that their 32bit software doesn't work anymore after the upgrade. If it wasn't such a pita to do it, I'd already have switched to something else. I think the opposite. I see all mature enough, and I expect that tiny details like the one I described will be ironed out before the release. The concept is simple: activate multiarch → install 32-bit software by means of 32-bit .debs. The wine package for wheezy in amd64 has a nice documentation on how to activate multiarch. -- Alberto -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Try playing a sound with paplay and then playing it again within 20 seconds. If you hear garbage the second time, then it's probably a pulseaudio problem. If you don't hear problems, then it probably IS a VLC issue. 2. I can't purge the package with aptitude purge pulseaudio since the package pulseaudio is a dependency on gnome-core. If you need Gnome without pulseaudio, try removing the gnome-core package, but add everything it depends on. In answer to your other question, though, Pulseaudio is a networked sound server. It has a lot more capability than ALSA does such as the ability to stream audio over a network, the ability to (fairly) easily manage multiple sources AND sinks (that is, you can replicate 4.0 surround sound using two sound cards, or even two computers). Based on the Wikipedia article, all DHCP messages to the client are sent to the broadcast address. This makes sense, since the UDP protocol used by DHCP runs on top of the IP protocol, and the client does not have an IP address until the DHCP negotiation is completed. So, what is the use of this option? Under what circumstances should the server not broadcast its messages? In a DHCP request, a client can choose to say that it does not need responses to be broadcast. There is a broadcast bit in the DHCP request that the client can turn off. The always-broadcast option for the DHCP server says that the server should ignore the unset broadcast bit and always broadcast the response. How does the client receive a unicast response, you ask? The response will still have the client's hardware address (MAC address). So the response will reach the client's interface. It seems, though, that this functionality is not often used. Clients always seem to set the broadcast bit, even if they will be able to receive a unicast response. I had a problem recently, where some random malfunctioning device on a network was seeing random DHCP responses intended for someone else and assigning the offered address to itself. I had to patch dhcpd to ignore the broadcast bit and always send a unicast response (a never-broadcast option). It worked surprisingly well. Thanks! I had the reverse problem. My android device (apparently android's dhcp client is buggy) would not receive the dhcp assignments even though the server would send them. Had the malfunctioning device requested an address in the first place? I think in any case it should not happen, because -I think- the DHCP packets include a 'transaction' field, by means of which a client can distinguish whether the packet is intended for it or not. So, UDP packets can be sent to MAC addresses? I was confused because in the Wikipedia article, IP addresses where shown in the headers. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Based on a disk capacity of 80 gigs, are the allotted partition sizes acceptable? Any suggestions please ? It depends on what you want to use the computer for. If you (mainly) use it to learn programming in C/C++/Object C, you're not like to need a lot of space on /var and probably no /opt partition, for example. Ok I'm reading this again and again. Awesome info here. Thank you. I have no idea what /var and /opt actually stand for or what they are used for but I continue to study? You may want to take a look at the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard[1]. This standard defines what files go where --- with Linux, you don't have the total mess you get with windoze so you just know where to find what. /opt is for optional files that belong to some application (and don't exactly fit in otherwise) while /var is for variable data, like log files, spool files, caches, databases. I don't know why they have files for the web server under /var --- the FHS probably has some reasoning about that somewhere ... [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard To give you some numbers: swap10GB [1] /2GB including /boot /usr12GB /var 2GB /tmp 2GB /homethe rest of it Wow! Excuse my enthusiasm but you really explain this well! I appreciate the amount of time you spent explaining this. Swap 10 gigs ?? I'm reading on. You're welcome :) That kind of swap just makes sense to me. It isn't so much that it would actually hurt you; it doesn't leave you stranded like only 2GB would, and it gives you time to do something in case you're about to run out of memory. swap10GB [1] /3GB including /boot /usr15GB /var 4GB /tmp 4GB /homethe rest of it [1]: There's a recommendation to have swap partitions at the very beginning of the disk because it's supposed to be faster. I'd make I need to place /boot at the beginning of the disk because I am using two hard drives in a dual-boot. For booting windows and Debian. /boot will be at the beginning of the 2nd drive (sdb). Hmm I don't know what speaks against having a swap partition first and then /boot, or against going without a separate /boot partition. IIRC, the reason to put /boot onto a separate partition was that some BIOS' were not able to access/address a partition if it was larger than some limit or further than some limit away from the beginning of the disk. Another reason can be that a partition on a RAID might be inaccessible during boot, so using a partition for /boot that isn't on RAID can be a (very ugly) workaround. Are there any particular reasons for a /boot partition being needed at the beginning of a disk for instances in which several OSs are installed (on several disks)? This drive will be 100% devoted to debian. I will then change the boot order in BIOS to have sdb drive boot. This will display a menu asking which OS to boot (windows or debian). See the end of page 2 on this link please: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/07/23/dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7-on-a-computer-with-2-hard-drives/ I've never tried that ... Re: Running 32bit OpenGL program with amd64
Alberto Luaces alua...@udc.es writes: I've been using a 32bit application which stopped working when the NVIDIA drivers were updated last time. Correct. The same happened to me. Yeah and it's impossible to get it working again : The reasons why it stopped working are unknown, Not quite. The *nvidia-glx-ia32 packages where emptied/obsoleted. See for example http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 . That doesn't mean that's the reason why it stopped working. and apparently I would have to switch to brokenarch before having a chance to get it working again. There is no Debian package for this 32bit application. What would that help me without knowing why the application doesn't work anymore? It seems reasonable to assume that it has something to do with the NVIDIA drivers --- if I could, I'd just go back to the previous version. The package management doesn't know anything about unstable or experimental anymore because that lead to problems, so it doesn't present any solutions. If I download and install packages manually, it causes dependency problems, and I might have to do so indefinitely once I started doing it. It's not a tiny detail when an important feature suddenly disappears without any warning and without any way to get it back. It's also not a tiny detail when you're suddenly supposed to give up amd64 and switch to brokenarch. It would be easier to re-install and use i386 instead of amd64, but I don't like the idea of turning my system back about a decade because Debian is totally messed up now --- and it's about as much work as switching. The concept is simple: activate multiarch → install 32-bit software by means of 32-bit .debs. The wine package for wheezy in amd64 has a nice documentation on how to activate multiarch. I don't have any use for wine and the two or three times I tried it over the years, wine didn't work anyway. Last time it couldn't even run notepad. Anyway, the concept sucks and is anything but simple. So what do I need to install --- packages from testing only, of course --- to get things working again? Recall that all ethernet communication (layer 2) is done using MAC addresses. Also recall that point-to-point links do not use ARP. A little more specifically, if the IP-MAC translation entry is not in the cache, the host will issue the ARP request. If the address is not on the local LAN, the host will issue an ARP request for the appropriate gateway. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: [OT] dhcpd and always-broadcast

It may have requested an address. Truth be told, I did not investigate the matter further after I hacked my way around it. So, UDP packets can be sent to MAC addresses? I was confused because in the Wikipedia article, IP addresses where shown in the headers. Remember, the client does not actually have any IP address assigned to its interface. So, it will not care at all what shows up in the UDP header's destination field. The MAC address is used by the intermediate switches to guide the packet. The clients network interface will of course pick up the ethernet frame because it has its MAC address on it. Meanwhile the DHCP client is waiting for packets to show up on UDP port 68, and it does not particularly care what the destination IP address is set in the UDP header. -- regards, kushal -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
