Cette commande n'est pas reconnue chez moi

bonjour,

cette commande existe bel et bien, mais il faut l'installer :

sudo -s apt-get install netselect-apt

ensuite : netselect-apt

il génère un sources.list

Are you sure it is Iceweasel that causes the freeze? Does it happen at
completely random times, or when you do something specific?

If it's random, you should try running memtest overnight.

To distribute some mechanism to avoid copy protection such as DRM is
illegal in Japanese law (Unfair Competition Prevention Act) since 2012.

It means that putting libdvdcss package into Debian repository causes
problems in Japan, and most of organization that provides Debian mirror
will _stop_ mirroring for Debian. Maybe libdvdcss is okay in other area,
but not here in Japan.

vore lite tråkigt om dom inte kan ha speglar hos sig.

Re: Old Computers

2015-06-02 Thread Rick Thomas

On Jun 1, 2015, at 5:56 PM, Jose Martinez jomartinez...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hey guys,
I'm about to be blessed with several old PC computers. By old I mean that
some of them will not even have CDROM drives on them. I will probably tear
them all down, mix-and-match parts and make the best system(s) I can from
those parts. This is something I've done before, so the technical aspects
are not a problem. I expect to use the resulting system(s) solely for play
purposes to experiment with and delve into the depths of the system
programming primarily for educational purposes. If any of you remember
Scotty from the original Star Trek series and how he spent his off/vacation
time pouring over tech manuals and playing with gadgets, well that's me!

The question is, will jessie install and run on these old systems? If not,
can I still get a debian distro that will? I expect that the processors on
at least one of them will be at least i386 or better, so I also expect that
jessie will install and run, but that my main problem will be with drivers
 for the legacy peripherals.

I just can't find it within me to throw out what is, other than being old, a
 good usable computer system.

I appreciate any information y'all can send my way.

Welcome to the club, Jose! I do the same sort of thing for old Macintosh
PowerPC machines. It’s actually kind of fun… (for certain definitions of “fun”
 -: )

You may find a distro targeted at so called “embedded” computers that will run
on your hardware. Do a Google search for “debian linux embedded x86”. That
seems to have some useful pointers.

Top of the list is “emdebian”. The Emdebian page says:

 Embedded_Debian

 Change of status
As of July 2014, Emdebian Grip stopped receiving updates to the unstable-grip
distribution. Updates to the jessie-grip suite stopped some months before
that. The last stable release of Emdebian Grip was 3.1 based on Debian
 GNU/Linux 7.1 Wheezy.
There will be no further updates of Emdebian Grip.
This information is retained for historical purposes but can be removed when
wheezy is finally removed from the Debian mirrors (which will happen at some
point before the next stable release after Debian Jessie 8.0).

So you can at least get a version of Wheezy that might work on your hardware.
Jessie looks to be not in the cards. I guess porting Systemd to minimal
hardware was just too hard… )-:

A little further down the list is Voyage Linux, which is a Debian derivative.
I’ve used Voyage. Some of the things they do to make it fit in a very small
footprint are quite creative! I learned a lot when I was doing that work.

Good luck, and have lots of fun!

Rick

Using Jessy with an older linux kernel

2015-06-02 Thread Freek Dijkstra
Hi,

Is it possible to run Jessy software and packages with an older (3.2 or
even 2.6) Linux kernel?

The VPS that my hosting provider offers, uses OpenVZ (or more likely,
it's commercial counterpart, Odin Virtuozzo). OpenVZ provides operating
system-level virtualization (unlike paravirtualization as offered by Xen
or KVM). This means the kernel can't be changed from the guest OS, only
from the hypervisor. So I'm stuck with an older kernel.

I've been successful in upgrading from Wheezy (7) with a Linux 3.2
kernel to Jessy (8) on a test-VPS, and everything seems to work fine.

My production server is still running Squeeze (6.10 with LTS), with a
Linux 2.6.32-042stab092.3 kernel.

While I expect an upgrade will work fine here too, I do like to get some
understanding of the risks.

Which packages would have dependencies on a kernel, in particular
dependencies on a more recent kernel?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Regards,
Freek Dijkstra

could ask your provider to upgrade the kernel.

Why not just upgrade to wheezy and leave it at that?? Ric

Re: Install from writeable USB

2015-06-02 Thread Brian
On Mon 01 Jun 2015 at 17:22:40 -0700, Charles Chambers wrote:

  1. Create a second partition with fdisk or cfdisk.

Done. By default, fdisk created a Type 83 partition. I added
 mkfs.ext2 /dev/sdc2 after physically removing/reinserting the drive
to give it a file system. This causes problems later on. I changed
the partition type to Type 7 (HPFS/NTFS/exFat) and formatted as such
because it mounts when I get to step 6.

Sorry, I omitted the advice to 'mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc2'. This is necessary
to get the partition mounted at the start of the install

1a. Mount the partition and copy preseed.cfg to it.

Done. I also ran chmod 777 preseed.cfg to eliminate any possible
 permissions problems.

 2. Boot into the installer. Select expert mode from the Advanced menu.

Selected advanced options, cursor down to Expert Install. Done.

  3. Press TAB and add file=/mnt/preseed.cfg to end of the displayed
command.

 Done.

  4. Boot the kernel.

 Done.

  5. At the first screen switch to a console (ALT-F2). 'ls -l /dev/sdb*'

should help identify the second partition on the USB stick. Mount
this partition; e.g: mount -t vfat /dev/sdc2 /mnt.

The first screen of the install is to select language, for which there
is an option in preseed.cfg. At this point, the install does not
appear to be parsing preseed.cfg, but I haven't yet customized
 preseed.cfg.

Note the fourth option - Load debconf preconfiguration file. /dev/sdc2
has to be mounted to access the file. The preseed.cfg is not parsed
until these steps are taken. I usually preseed language and keyboard on
the command line for the kernel. For example:

   locale=en_GB.UTF-8 keymap=gb

However, setting the partition type of /dev/sdb2 to Type 7 lets me
mount /dev/sdb2 on /mnt as vfat, so I have some progress.

Good.

 6. Proceed with the install.

What makes it go? The objective is a totally hands off install, but I
exit the console and I'm still on the first screen of the Expert
Install with the process awaiting input.

Just carry on with each main menu entry in turn.

As above, but make sure the third partition starts after the end of the

I tried. Each and every attempt to create /dev/sdb3 ends up with the
tool trying to replace /dev/sdb1. I understand clearly that I may use
space from sector 454656 to the end of the drive, but what tool best
sets up that third partition? I tried fdisk, cfdisk, GNU parted,
 Kparted, and Gparted.

No need to create a partition using all the remaining space. 20M is
enough for your purposes. Here is a record of what I did successfully:

 Acquire::ForceIPv4  true ;

ajouter :
allow-hotplug ethX
auto ethX
iface ethX inet dhcp

X étant le n° du port eth, que l'on trouve ici :
# cat /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

Supposons eth0 :
# ifdown eth0
# ifup eth0
Observes la réponse, et ça doit rouler.
Test :
# ping free.fr
# ifconfig -a
tu dois avoir cette ligne :
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:28:22:c5:9a:30
  inet adr:192.168.0.118 .

Si l'IP est indiqué, c'est bon.

Hope it helps...

Are you sure it froze or it was just Iceweasel hogging the whole system?

I've had firefox do the same. Just run it nekkid, without addons, and

You can find it at:

http://packages.devuan.org/alpha-iso-cd/devuan-jessie-netboot-i386-alpha2.iso

Known issues:

* default hostname = debian (netcfg udeb)
* the name Debian appears in taskmanager in reference to 'Desktop
Environment'
* if 'standard utilities' are left selected in task-select the
installation step fails (dependency conflict between nfs-common and
libdevmapper)
* systemd bits are still installed even though we use sysvinit.

Any other issues, please file an issue against devuan-installer
project in git lab, email me, or try and catch me on irc #devuan

Cheers :D

Re: Instructions for upgrading U-boot on Marvell OpenRD Base computer?

No, the Ultimate and Base are different. I just checked and I was

noticed that even the Ultimate target was removed in Debian's u-boot
 recently:
 http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/u-boot.git/commit/debian/targets?id=ea2f6ce84b7788cda2cb7deb29690cb368451e8c

So if you want to work out why it doesn't build and whether it boots,
 I'm sure Vagrant Cascadian would be interested in hearing from you;
but it's probably easier to stay with the original u-boot unless that
 has problems.

Thanks for the reply, however discouraging!

Currently, I’m running Wheezy on the Base and its sister Ultimate.
I haven’t tried Jessie since the formal release, but I will do that and
report back soon. I gather from what you say about DTB that that transition
does not depend on U-Boot? So I should be able to upgrade to and beyond
 Jessie without problems?

The problem I’m having with Wheezy that makes me think it would be
interesting to try a later U-Boot is that the original Marvell U-Boot (from
2009) is balky when booting from USB hard disks and doesn’t support booting
from SD at all. If I could boot from SD, I would put /boot there and
everything else on the USB disk. As it is, whenever I need to reboot the
machine (I’m using it for experimentation, so that happens fairly often.) I
need to log in to the serial console so I can watch and restart if booting
from the hard drive fails. (Sometimes it fails in a way that requires actual
physically re-setting the Base or even power-cycling it, but that’s a
 different story.)

Can you tell me what the most recent U-Boot version is that actually does
 support the OpenRD Base?

I'm able to get both openrd_base and openrd_ultimate to build (no idea
if it boots) by disabling MMC support with u-boot 2015.04. But then, it
sounds like you're actively looking for MMC support...

Another option might be to move where the stored u-boot environment is
to allow for a larger u-boot binary, but this breaks backwards
compatibility; this may also be an issue for the SheevaPlug and other
marvell platforms:

  https://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/2015/04/msg00023.html
  https://bugs.debian.org/781874
  https://bugs.debian.org/781873

There isn't much traction in upstream u-boot on this, and I suspect
u-boot is basically broken on sheevaplug, guruplug and openrd_ultimate
in jessie, stretch and sid... With no activity upstream, I'm hesitant to
just break backwards compatibility by moving the environment; it might
be better to drop support.

The choices seem to be between not including features, or breaking
backwards compatibility with the environment location, and I'd like to
move in whichever direction gets into upstream u-boot on this, which
currently is neither...

I gather from what you say about DTB that that transition does not

That's correct.

The ideal scenario would be for the boot loader (u-boot in this case)
to pass the device tree information to the kernel. However, since you
cannot upgrade the boot loader on every device, it's possible to
simply append a Debice Tree Blob (DTB) to the kernel image. In
Debian, the flash-kernel tool has been updated to append the DTB when
needed. (For Debian stretch, we also need to add the DTB in Debian
installer so the installer will boot, but I'll make that change this
week.)

Can you tell me what the most recent U-Boot version is that actually
does support the OpenRD Base? If there is such a thing, do you have
a suggested procedure for doing the upgrade?

Get u-boot from unstable, add the target (see the patch I quoted in my
previous email which removed the ultimate target) and build. Make
sure you have a backup of u-boot and know how to use OpenOCD.

I was thinking more along the lines of really old Debian releases,
something that would be contemporary with the hardware.
In view of the kernel problem, you are obviously right. But in
general, I

would rather use something that is security updated. So I was trying to
think of other possibilities.

Lisi
On the other hand, the old releases were updated for all the security
problems known at the time. They may well be immune to newer issues
introduced after the release became unsupported and there may be few
people trying attacks that haven't worked on atypical computers in
over a decade.

And I will probably not use these system(s) on line much if any at all.
So most of the security issues will fixed or not will not really be a
problem in this situation.

I see I've sparked a pretty good discussion on the list. I sure
appreciate all the advice/information it will come in very handy when I
actually have the systems in hand.

There is no -dev option for dpkg-buildpackage.

Re: Instructions for upgrading U-boot on Marvell OpenRD Base computer?

2015-06-02 Thread Rick Thomas

On 06/02/15 13:41, Martin Michlmayr wrote:

Can you tell me what the most recent U-Boot version is that actually
does support the OpenRD Base? If there is such a thing, do you have
a suggested procedure for doing the upgrade?

Get u-boot from unstable, add the target (see the patch I quoted in my
previous email which removed the ultimate target) and build. Make
sure you have a backup of u-boot and know how to use OpenOCD.

Thanks!
I'll do that. Building U-boot (and other Debian packages) from source
is something I have always wanted to learn about. Up to now, I've been
a parametric user of Debian: I know where all the knobs and dials and
switches are and what they all do, but I've never had occasion to build
it myself. You've given me a good excuse to learn! (-:

I've found a couple of web pages that describe using OpenOCD. So, while
that will also be a learning experience, that part should not be a problem.

The thing that has been keeping me from doing this is that nowhere can I
find the exact U-Boot commands to use to burn the new U-boot image to
ROM on the Base. As I understand it, the OpenOCD magic leaves you with
a running new U-Boot copy in RAM. You then have to use it to burn a
copy of the new U-Boot (from a USB stick or via tftp, or whatever) into
ROM. That part is what I haven't been able to find specifically for the
OpenRD Base. I've found instructions for burning on SheevaPlugs and
other Plug devices, and for the CuBox devices, but not for the Base.
Can you help there?

For the short term, I'd like to experiment with something that doesn't
have the potential problem that it was built by a novice builder (me).
Is there one of the 2011 or 2012 pre-built U-boot images I can use for
testing?

And finally, you suggest it's a good idea to have a backup of the
current U-Boot. How do I do that?

Thank you very much for being so understanding and helpful!

Enjoy!
Rick

Re: Instructions for upgrading U-boot on Marvell OpenRD Base computer?

2015-06-02 Thread Rick Thomas

On 06/02/15 13:37, Vagrant Cascadian wrote:

The choices seem to be between not including features, or breaking
backwards compatibility with the environment location, and I'd like to
move in whichever direction gets into upstream u-boot on this, which
currently is neither...

live well,
   vagrant

Is there a pre-built (however old) U-Boot I can use that supports MMC?
I'd really like to be able to use all three sources for booting: MMC (SD
card), USB (USB stick or USB hard drive) and eSATA (hard drive).

I'm using the box for experimenting, so as much flexibility as possible
is highly desirable...

Here's an interesting thought... I don't know how much effort it would
require, or even if it would work at all, but:

Maybe a chain-loader approach; A totally minimal stripped down U-boot
lives in the usual place in ROM. It loads a much more robust U-Boot
from the SD card (which can be as big as 32GB!) Then the big U-boot is
finally used to boot the Linux system from whatever system residency
device you chose -- eSATA, USB-stick, USB hard drive, or even a
different partition on the SD card...

All the minimal U-boot in ROM needs to do is load from MMC, so, once
installed, it can be considered static -- part of the hardware. The
real U-boot lives on the SD card, so (as if by magic) the box becomes
un-brickable. I can keep an SD card with a working U-boot on it in
reserve if I mess up using an experimental version for testing.

What do you think?

Enjoy!
Rick

Ah, found it: it's the kernel's configuration option CONFIG_FHANDLE. I don't
know off the bat which kernel versions support that, but might be 2.6.39-ish.

Of course, if you stay with SysV init, this doesn't concern you.

The answer would be expect some tweaking if your value of 'older' is old
enough, especially if you go with the (default) systemd.

Hi Fred

Potato was the last Debian release without the pool structure that the
Debian ftp archive is using today. It had the structure that
debarchiver is using. When the package was released (I think it first
appeared in the potato release) it was obvious what it was. I guess
after 13 years or so, it is no longer so obvious. :-)

 Dear Lundqvist,

can you explain the meaning of the word 'potato' in the package
 description of debarchiver?

This tool can create a potato like file structure that dselect,
apt-get and similar tools can use for easier installation.

Now I have only 0.9.8 openssl.

I'd recommend to update to jessie instead of trying to bringt decent
openssl to that release. I assume compiling and installing to /usr/local or
/opt shouldn't be an issue. Then you've to link your software with the TLS 1.2
requirement against this copy of openssl. If you really need it, that could be
a way to go.

Keep in mind that LTS support for squeeze will also run out at some point in a
not too distant future.

I think it should be enabled in case it's currently missing.

las configuro con dhcp, uso network-manager

Re: Jessie - Mate - LibreOffice Need larger fonts everywhere

I had no trouble setting font size for menu-bars/drop down
menus/etc.
I wish to use LibreOffice Calc.
Two problems:
   1. I need the text of Help Screens to be large enough to read.
   2. I want to force a specific default Font Family and Font
Size for cells on*ALL* spreadsheets. I can set for specific
  region of current spreadsheet only.

Secondary question:
Any way to force minimum Font Size for any operator input
independent of application?

If you have a high-res monitor with a high pixel density, you
need to tell your desktop manager about it.

I don't have THAT particular problem ;/ I'm using a Lenovo R61
laptop. The Debian Installer chose appropriate pixel density. My
problem is being of tri-focal wearing generation.

It will be hidden in
preferences, probably. For MATE: System:Preference:Appearance,
Fonts Tab, look under Rendering, click Details. At the top will
be Resolution, in dots-per-inch. My 27-inch, 1440p monitor needs
it set to 107 ppi.

Though not addressing my problem, that served as a very useful
diagnostic tool.
I found that increasing DPI by ~50% made LibreOffice's help text
comfortably viewable.

All this caused me to change my search criteria to discover
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Faq/General/020 which says:

The visual appearance of the online help is managed by a
configuration file,

 depending on version:
 LibO_installation/Basis/help/en/defaut.css.
 or
 LibO_installation/help/en/defaut.css.

You can change the font family, size, color and lines in this
file. Save the

modified file and restart LibO (included the Quickstarter).

For my installation of Debian 8.0 the file is:
/usr/share/libreoffice/help/en-US/default.css

Now that Help is legible, that leaves me only to discover how to
force default font size for *content* of all spreadsheet cells to
a suitable value.

If you use Gnome 2 or 3, there is a similar setting. Other
Window managers and desktops probably have a similar setting.

This will not solve all such problems, but most apps will look
better at the correct ppi density.

Mark

Re: Using Jessy with an older linux kernel

2015-06-02 Thread Eduardo M KALINOWSKI

On Ter, 02 Jun 2015, Freek Dijkstra wrote:

Is it possible to run Jessy software and packages with an older (3.2 or
even 2.6) Linux kernel?

It depends.

This version will probably not work with systemd, but an updated
kernel is available: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179343
. You could ask your provider to upgrade the kernel.

No, a la lista se pueden mandar correos sin estar subscrito, de ahí
que no tenga mucho sentido intentar responder a esa persona a través

1/ Selecciona mtp e intenta que algún programa que gestione ese

You could try forcing the drive to a lower speed to see if taxing the
hardware less will avoid triggering the problem.

Make a file /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf and put the single line
  options libata force=1.5G
in it. Reboot. If it works, you can then try with 3.0G instead of 1.5G.

You can find it at:

http://packages.devuan.org/alpha-iso-cd/devuan-jessie-netboot-i386-alpha2.iso

Known issues:

* default hostname = debian (netcfg udeb)
* the name Debian appears in taskmanager in reference to 'Desktop
Environment'
* if 'standard utilities' are left selected in task-select the
installation step fails (dependency conflict between nfs-common and
libdevmapper)

* systemd bits are still installed even though we use sysvinit.

Any other issues, please file an issue against devuan-installer project in
git lab, email me, or try and catch me on irc #devuan

Cheers :D
