According to what I have documented in my Dokuwiki, it was that way used for me to start the process of upgrading from Squeeze to Wheezy, and from Wheezy to Jessie: # aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade -V (change "jessie" to "stretch" on /etc/apt/source.list) # apt-get update # apt-get install apt dpkg aptitude -V (...) Thanks also, Lisi, for your interest. I've tried a different approach, starting with a minimal upgrade using "apt-get upgrade -V", and then upgrading the kernel and udev. Finally a complete upgrade with "apt-get dist-upgrade -V". On that way I can upgrade without problems. Now I have some issues with KDE. For example the latest Dell XPS to claim it has > hibernation working is a 2013 model: > https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Dell/Dell%20XPS%2013%209333 . I'm runninng mostly stable, with some backports and unstable, and vanilla kernels self-built from upstream sources, on a ThinkPad W550s. * WiFi works well, currently with 'firmware-iwlwifi' from backports (ISTR having had trouble with disconnects and / or other flakiness using stable's 'firmware-iwlwifi'). * suspend-to-ram worked out of the box, but only via the Xfce4 mechanisms - the Fn key doesn't do anything. [I have not tried other mechanisms.] [I haven't tried suspend-to-disk, since suspend-to-ram is sufficient for me, although I suppose s2disk is better from a security perspective, insofar as one is using full disk encryption.] * In general, some of the Fn keys work, and some don't: screen brightness up/down work, but mute, volume up/down, suspend, and hibernate don't. * My version of the W550s has a "high DPI" screen: 2880*1620 ('3K'). Support for high DPI in stable is pretty spotty: installation went fine, but the console uses such tiny fonts that it is barely readable. Xfce4, too, needed tweaking to render it usable. In general, you can search the web to find the various tweaks that will improve usability, but it's a pain - the information is scattered, rarely authoritative, and often outdated (and as is often the case, much of the better documentation comes from other distros, such as Arch). * Battery charging control needs the 'tlp' and 'acpi-call' packages (the older 'tp-smapi' software no longer works on recent ThinkPads) - not well documented on ThinkWiki, which seems these days to be geared more toward older ThinkPads (I know, it's a Wiki, and I should update it with all this stuff ...) * This is a big one: support for the integrated Intel graphics (5500) is incomplete / buggy in stable's X packages. I had terrible screen tearing (and possibly other problems), which seem to have gone away with the installation of backport packages. [The machine also has a Quadro K620M, but I haven't tried it yet.] Celejar

Upgrading Jessie to Stretch
Hi all! Given that Stretch is in the final freeze phase, I thought it was a good idea to upgrade my desktop computer from Jessie to Stretch to start getting used to using it. After updating to the latest version of stable and changing "jessie" to "stretch" in sources.list, I started with the usual procedure: updating APT and other utilities, to have available the improvements that have been introduced. # apt-get install apt dpkg aptitude -V But this seems to cause some VLC dependencies to break: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libvlccore8 : Breaks: vlc (< 2.2.4-7~) but 2.2.4-1~deb8u1 is to be installed Breaks: vlc-nox (< 2.2.4-7~) but 2.2.4-1~deb8u1 is to be installed E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. Did this happen to anyone else? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Daniel signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Final thought first: My apt-cache query wandering while pondering this thread landed me at "libpurple0". Am posting a resulting "apt-cache show libpurple0" for listserv posterity because of this snippet that was part of that query result: "Conflicts: network-manager (<< 0.9.0)" I wonder... I wonder if there's something similarly different that could be found by running that kind of search on whatever package names you all are using when you run into those moments of non-functioning. Now my original (not succinct) post Another just thinking out loud moment.. Up front, I realize this might not fulfill the exact feature that's needed, particularly since I'm not seeing Skype referenced, but am forwarding anyway. Maybe it provides something that could be adapted, yada-yada A few weeks ago I tripped over a package called "Finch" while looking for something else. Printing packages
Hi all. In order to print, I used to do: # aptitude install cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsys-client libcupsimage2 cups-driver-gutenprint cupsys-driver-gutenprint gs-esp , but now cupsys seems not to exist any more. Please, what packages now should I install in place of those above? I'm running Sid. More in general, I often face this kind of problem: when I want to re-install a certain package some time later, on another machine, the packages names have changed and I don't the new names. So I have to search hard, blindly, trying to guess, looking here and there randomly... Isn't there, in Debian packages policy, a way to always know what packages have replaced the old ones? Thanks for any help, Rodolfo

I don't know if there's a way to ask the X server whence a font comes from, but with a bit of guesswork... First I checked I've the fonts you note above. Then I query the X server where it looks for its fonts: tomas@rasputin:~$ xset q Keyboard Control: auto repeat: onkey click percent: 0LED mask: XKB indicators: [...] Colors: default colormap: 0x20BlackPixel: 0x0WhitePixel: 0xff Font Path: /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc, /usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled, /usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled, /usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1, /usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi, /usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,built-ins DPMS (Energy Star): Standby: 600Suspend: 600Off: 600 DPMS is Enabled Monitor is On (output edited for readability). Since those DEC fonts are most probably bitmap fonts, and the font description string has an 75 in its dpi field, /usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/ looks like a good candidate. Looking there, I see no "dec", but two "term" (i.e two file names with "term" in them). My apologies, but this is another hit-n-run due to something that HAS to be addressed "elsewhere". I can't remember what i was working on, but I ended up wanting to play in my primary Applications menu a couple weeks ago. I THINK I wanted to *attempt* to delete a duplicate entry that a multimedia program installed on there. Can't remember how I stumbled upon the location, but I found what i needed at: /etc/xdg/menus More specifically in my case at that second, I needed: /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu It was fun looking at that because it shows just the tiniest, tiniest glimpse into what it takes for Developers to do what they do across the entire of Debian development. I tried VERY CAREFULLY altering that file *AFTER MAKING A BACKUP*. Whatever I was doing didn't work, and I got sidetracked so never uncover why it failed. My a-sumption at this second is that it would possibly be that this file takes its head nods from something higher above it. An example that is more commonly known would be where we can manually alter /boot/grub/grub.cfg all day long, but on the next reboot, it reverts back to its former status. In that case, the more permanent alternative we have is alter something like one of my favorite files, /etc/grub.d/40_custom. I THINK I found /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu because I had a mental tickle file already stored about its possible existence. Had I not found it via a "locate" terminal command line search, my next usual step is to "grep" for an unordinary, thus less commonly found, entry off my menu (e.g. PySol Fan Club Edition). Once in a while it takes *me* a grep of the whole hard drive to find something like that. *grin* Hope that... I don't know... either does directly help with this or at least leads to some other fun find for others some day.. :) Cindy :) -- Cindy-Sue Causey Talking Rock, Pickens County, Georgia, USA * runs with duct tape *

Not finding them on google either. Are they part of a debian install? Or does anyone no there origin? Or where to get them?

Re: No sound-inputs but sound recording FMIT
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/fmit https://packages.debian.org/stretch/fmit Here are the two current versions of it and I like it because it gives a little more control in tuning out noise and concentrate in what I want to measure. It is most probably electrical noise and fluctuations of voltage and/or frequency, which may get amplified to look like an unstable wave form. This part may be understood enough to leave it to the sound experts. What is interesting is that a mechanical vibration may actually cause electrical contacts on the whole system to create an instability within that electrical noise. One does not need to be a sound physicist to translate this into an effective microphone. How many pc's don't have panels that act as drums and amplify noise and transform noise into a mechanical vibration? No, there is no onboard mic, there are only two audio inputs front and back, and as I said trying this in 2 other systems with different debian builds had similar results (some noise registering and affected by abrupt vibration). Yes I have pavucontrol installed, pulseaudio and utils. PS Suddenly, the noises in one's head that nobody else hears are recorded by one's only true friend, the PC :)) :))) deloptes: > GiaThnYgeia wrote: > >> I don't see how the previous got linked to a previous thread so I am >> reposting with additional clarification. >> >> OK, I did some testing on an other machine with a testing installation, >> downloaded FMIT (an instrument tuner that will pickup audio input/analog >> and tell you all kinds of stuff about the wave that is fed). >> Same exact behavior, hardware only lists two audio inputs and are both >> unplugged. My solution was to delete the panel and start over ;/
Re: Stretch & Safely Replacing systemd? AntiX
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AntiX [antiX is a Linux distribution, originally based on MEPIS, which itself is based on the Debian stable distribution. It initially replaced the MEPIS KDE desktop environment with the Fluxbox and IceWM window managers, making it suitable for older, less powerful x86-based systems. Unlike Debian, antiX is "proudly systemd-free".[this quote needs a citation] systemd does not support old hardware very well due to its virtualization-based development.] Although I wanted to give it a try their webpage is full of scripts and invisible as html, their forum rejects registration without a verified ISP IP. Questioning their forum admin on why would he require a real IP to participate in such a forum did not result to ANY answer. So, I became an anti-ANTIx fan for all that this intro implies. As I use a non-html editor, txt comes in and txt comes out, I forget that the headers are hidden, but never thought they were included in forward, only in replies. It is good to know that mozilla in providing with a clean email gui does such things. Also if you use reply instead of reply-all or reply-list the headers that are picked up "by the list" are threading the messages. So it is partly the list-laundering activity that creates all the confusion. I'm willing to bet that in interpersonal exchange some of those messages wouldn't be threaded. But I've seen it happen both ways, Re: same-subject unthreaded and Re: different-subject threaded. So it must have to do with some mailing systems stripping headers and some that don't do it, and effective stripping goes two ways.
