Re: compartir carpetas debian windows
This is a very good solution for my particular use case. I had actually used profiles before, but not so satisfactorily. But that was some years ago, and may have been due to my general ineptness. My only modification on the solution is to use 'xhost +' instead of giving extra privs to the new user. This is all on a very isolated lan so hopefully no holes there. It has the advantage that i'm certain that information from one firefox cannot possibly leak into the other. And one side effect, which i think can sometimes be an advantage, is that the downloads cannot mix either. dan

Luis!

Darn 'beep' stoped working after installing Stretch in place of Jessie
Hi folks, I installed (fresh install instead of an upgrade) Debian Stretch on my laptop. The installation is full success without any problem except a little one - 'beep' does not produce a sound neither from CLI nor from a bash scripts. I had Jessie installed on the same laptop before and it worked just fine. I checked everything I possibly could: pcspkr module loaded, alsa does not have any muted channels, tried to use it as a user and as a root. No clue why it does not work any longer in Strech. Any suggestions? Thanks.

The above standard threat models are pretty much what the average person should worry about. Full disk encryption with a strong, unique password should be sufficient to prevent casual snooping or theft. Caveats to the above threat models: 0. Nothing is preventing anyone from taking a raw copy of the encrypted data, and later decrypting it. Assume that any data that is taken from you *will* be accessed one day, whether encrypted or not. 1. If the manufacturer needs access to your OS for whatever reason (a plausible example: they replace the wifi hardware and want to test it), they will want a login. They may, and probably will, refuse warranty service if they can't log in. Full disk encryption will likely be a bad idea; if they have access to your encryption key, the entire disk is open. A possible substitute is to set up eCryptfs to encrypt your /home partition, and set up a technician account for the warranty service explicitly. Alternatively, wipe/replace the hard drive and give them a bare bones OS install with just enough functionality for them to test. 2. Full disk encryption will keep a casual thief from accessing your data. No guarantees against a persistent thief, or worst case a three letter agency with a vendetta. But for this reason alone, full disk encryption is a good idea if you have anything even remotely worth taking (like passwords, pictures). 3. Carrying a laptop is not recommended if dealing with border officials. In fact, you should assume that your laptop will be forcibly taken by a border official (whether legal or otherwise), along with any other electronic device you may have. A "burner" laptop and phone is recommended when crossing borders. I do not recommend Truecrypt or similar, as border officials know all about Truecrypt, and will likely ask you to log into your "real" login. 4. If a government official wants you to provide the decryption key (whether such request is legal or not), and you refuse, you will probably be punished. Be prepared to lawyer up, and be prepared to have a bad time. Goes without saying, perform regular backups of your data using whatever method you are most comfortable with.

on non-running OS find all installed pkgs
The hosts in this query are both on vbox vms. One not running but with OS disk mounted on a different host. How can I get a list of all debian pkgs installed on the OS that is not running? That is, when I have the debian OS disk mounted on a different HOST. Is there something in var (or anywhere else for that matter) that can be used to get all installed pkgs?

Here are some good steps up in quality: Use a good USB microphone array like the Blue Yeti http://www.bluemic.com/products/yeti/ -- this has two microphones inside and can typically produce much higher quality recordings of voice and instruments than anything plugged directly into your PC's mic port. These are typically cheaper retail. This is the best value improvement. Or you can go higher. Use a USB microphone receiver (also known as a pre-amp/mixer) to connect normal music-quality microphones to your computer. For $50 to $100*, you can get 1 to 4 good inputs. If you want to make professional-sounding recordings, it's easier with something like this. * but you can spend incredible quantities of money on microphones, and some people do. -dsr-

When I do not like Google, Apple or Microsoft ... what mobile phone should I exactly buy today? I spent days with SailFish ... it is not at the level of the big players. What has FSF or any of you (moral preachers) done to help us have an alternative? I stop before I get cynical. In fact the mass does not care and your idea boycoting ... what? qualifies you as naive. Naive is also the idea that we can relay on GPL2 or GPL3 from the 80s and 90s. I would like to see more education, Enlightment coming from FSF and community in fact I see more and more closed source devices, while the community is (mostly) stuck in the FSF dream of the 80s and 90s in lack of focus and unity. This is my personal opinion. The mass however moved forward and the young people are getting more and more pragmatic. If you don't win them for your cause, you are lost. So I think in future we will see more and more violations of the kind and less and less responses to them. Recently I found out that when ideology stands higher than pragmatics the whole thing affected dies ... numerous examples like communism or democracy in our modern understanding.
