Missing library libXamwM.so.0

2000-03-29 Thread Alan Tam
Hi,
I am setting up siag-3.3.2 to work on my 2.1 box with
2.2.14 kernel.
I have done ./configure, make, make install. When I
run the program siag, pw, or egon it complains about
error in loading shared libraries
libXawM.so.0:Can not open shared object file:No such
file or directory.

I've looked into the slink and frozen packages of
xaw-wrappers, xaw3dg, xaw3dg-dev or xaw95g none of them provide
the above library.

Could someone pls tell me where to get it, or get
siag running ?

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.
Can you tell me more about how you worked around it
by changing some of the macros in the a2ps config files ?

I changed a2ps-site.cfg in the following ways:
 change DefaultPrinter: | #{lp.default}
 to DefaultPrinter: | #{lp}mydefaultprintername

I also changed that printer to be level 2 postscript. Read
 the comments in the file...

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your reply.
Can you tell me more about how you worked around it

Temporary, I reinstalled the lprng package but could
not print in kde (console, netscape wordperfect 8 is ok).

Thank you.
Alan

 Hi dear Debian gurus,

I am a home user running slink (Debian 2.1).

I've installed the cups 1.0.5 deb package which overwrites my
 original lprng package.
But when I try to print something like
lpr ~/.bashrc it says lpr: error -- no default destination
 avaiable

I found that it would work if you put the printer name in
the options to lpr. It would never work with the printer
defaulted. I worked around it by changing some of the macros
in the a2ps config files to always use the printer name. Not
a general fix, but it worked for me.

Cups 1.0.5

2000-03-01 Thread Alan Tam
Hi dear Debian gurus,

I am a home user running slink (Debian 2.1).

I've installed the cups 1.0.5 deb package which overwrites my
original lprng package.
But when I try to do
lpr ~/.bashrc it says lpr: error -- no default destination
avaiable
then I go through the web for cups related docs and I found
http://cups.sourceforge.net.

Then I followed the steps
1. [bash] lpstat -o Enter == nothing comes out
2. [bash] cupsd Enter == [1] 523 (I've tried a few times, some are
629, 1003)
3. [bash] lpstat -o Enter == [1]+   Exit 98cupsd(I've win98
on the same disk)
what is that mean ?

Issued the command again lpr ~/.bashrc same error message.

Then I try to add the printer by doing
[bash] lpadmin -dHewlett Packard Deskjet 660C -vparallel:/dev/lp1
-mdeskjet.ppd
it responds with: Authentication required for root on localhoist...
UNIX Password:
then I entered my root login password. It then responds with:
lpadmin: set default failed: The requested
resource was not found on this server.
and jumped back to the command prompt.

How to get cups up and running ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Kernel: Make config errors (First time compile)

1999-04-19 Thread Alan Tam
Hi,

I think you are installing the old hamm (2.0) package. The current
package is
slink (2.1). Nothing wrong with the old ones just a reminder.

If you prepared to use kernel-package, it depends on perl, dpkg,
dpkg-dev,
fileutils, libc6-dev and if you install ncurses3.4 may be the libncurses3.4-dev
is
required.

Enjoy!

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 kernel-source-2 2.0.34-4
 libc6-dev 2.0.7t-1
 make 3.76.1-8
 ncurses3.4 1.9.9g-8.8
 patch 2.5-2

but I thought the kernel-package was required to install with kpkg, I'll
upgrade that one ... if there's anyone else you might think of, please let me
 know.

Re: file system vfat

1999-04-15 Thread Alan Tam
Hi,

The kernel comes with Debian was not configured with vfat support.
During
boot time mount is processed before kerneld, therefore you can't mount vfat file
systems before kerneld is processed. After login (before login, kerneld is
processed) then you can mount the vfats.

To have the vfat support at boot time compile your kernel with answers
to make
config (or make menuconfig | make xconfig) as follows:
fat fs support y
msdos fs supporty
vfat fs supporty
nls codepage 437 m
nls iso8859-1 m

Re: Which Kernel?

1999-01-31 Thread Alan Tam
Hi,

Use the latest kernel 2.2.1 at http://www.kernel.org which supports
shared
parallel ports.

The program which compiles the kernel under Hamm is gcc make which is
included in the Hamm packages, that means you don't have to download newer
versions of software.

I am new to Linux as well, my answer may not be right.

Enjoy !

pain. I know I can use a 2nd lpt port, but I figure compiling a kernel is
 easier than fidlling with IRQs.

My question is which kernel to get that. I think both 2.1 and 2.2 support
shared parallel ports. Also, where would I get the source and does hamm
compile these kernels or do I need to download newer versions of software.

Re: Printer Setup

1999-01-30 Thread Alan Tam
Hi Craig,

That is the default printcap settings when you first install lpr or
lprng.
You have to run magicfilterconfig--force to replace that printcap which
is
mainly for dot matrix printers not for ink jets.

The Netscape printings clearly indicates that nothing has been
processed through the
gs postscript filter.

After you do magicfilterconfig--force your printcap should look more or
less like
Bob's email at Thu 11:27

Good luck

Dosemu help

1999-01-07 Thread Alan Tam
Hi , folks;

I installed the dosemu_0.66.7-13.deb with raw config.sys and

After I boot to drive A (executing dos -A with a Win95 bootdisk in

Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: WP8 - Lots of Joy and some grumbles

1998-12-19 Thread Alan Tam
Hi Richard,

Here maybe a bug in Wp8, but I am not sure, because I'm new to Linux.
In the command window xterm I run the command less
/usr/doc/dosemu/README.txt to view the contents. There are some headings for
each
paragraph listed (something like) in bold characters. On the other hand if I
view it
with Wp8 all those bold headings are not converted. Instead, it turns out to be
square
boxes.
The README.txt file is originally in gzipped format (README.txt.gz of
which I
gunzipped it for Wp8 to read) while I choose ascii text format from the popup
dialog
box for convertion.
Any idea to solve this problem ?
Yesterday I saw an email complaining Wp8 more or less the same as I do.

I am using Fvwm95 as my window manager, running Debian 2.0.34.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your response.

I actually thought that I shouldn't extract the file in Win95 system.
So the file I downloaded yesterday from Download.com is a whole named
guilg00.gz 23M
in size.

This time I learm to get smart by copying the file from Win95 system
to Linux
system and extract it according to the Download.com's web page (gunzip, then
tar -xvf
and run Runme). Perfect as the name implies.

Thank you.

I wouldn´t extract the file onto a vfat partition, as you don´t have

A detailed setup procedure is most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Martin Bialasinski wrote:

 Hi,

I did the download from ftp.funet.fi (actually any www.cdrom.com

I got the multipart version, and also run into the problem, that Runme
said there is nothing to do.

The problem is, that the files havo to be all lowercase.

 gunzip GUI*

 #convert the filenames to lowercase
 mmv GUI* gui#1

 tar xfv gui00

Then you may want to unpack the other gui* files as well, but the
installer should be able to do this also (I am not sure, so I would
like to hear from people who tried this).

 ../Runme

The installation is GUI based from this point. You may want to run the
 installation as root.

To do this, either start X as root (or log in as root through xdm) or
 run ssh -l root localhost.

WP8 looks quite nice so far, but I usually use LaTeX and Lyx, so I
have to take a deeper look to evaluate it.

To run it, you need the debian packages libc5, xlib6 and xpm4.7.
Check if you have them installed with dpkg -l libc5 xlib6 xpm4.7

using the right disk. I have Debian 2.0 official, both the Binary and
Source disks say the same thing when I boot them up and try to install
from cdrom. Can you use either, or?

I'm fairly new myself, so don't take my responses as gospel. I'm not sure
if you can use the Source CD for an initial install; I think you want to
 use the Binary.

I went through the steps and
everything seemed to go ok until I tried to partion the drive. I
followed the instructions in the book. I select [New] and [Primary]
then I can't change the size of the partion, it lets me make a 6149.89
MB partion but then can't go on to make a swap partion. The 6149.89 MB
is my whole HD so maybe that is why I can't make another. At any rate I
noticed the numbers lock isn't on and the numbers just don't work. I
entered [US] when choosing a keyboard.

I haven't yet figured out how to get the numlock to default On (that's
low priority for now). You can us the numbers above the qwerty keyboard,
or just press the NumLock key to turn on numlock.

I don't think I'd use one partition for the system, although the system
doesn't really care. It's just that later you might find it more useful if
you've modularized the system some. I'd probably allocate 200MB for the
root, maybe 300 if you want to be generous. Then maybe 64 or 128MB for the
swap (you can't use more than 128MB for a single swap partition, I
believe, and I think 64 would be more than adequate). The rest of the
drive I'd probably evenly divide into partitions for /usr, /tmp, /var, and
/home. Others would probably say this is overkill.

If you have [an] existing partition[s], you may need to delete them first
to make room for the scheme mentioned above (or whatever scheme you decide
on). Be aware that partitioning will clean your drive of any existing
 data.

Then when you create a new partition, don't let it use the entire space.
One of the questions that cfdisk (or fdisk) asks is how big you want the
partition (it automatically puts in 6149.89M for you, assuming it should
use all the available space. Erase this and type in the size you want
(such as 200M). I believe you can specify the size in megabytes by typing
a number followed by M, but I'm not sure of the exact syntax. I think the
on-screen hints will indicate how to do that.

Once you've got the partitions created, you'll need to choose the Write
option to actually write the changes to disk.

  #2. While I'm at it. I have a blank 6.4 gigabyte 2nd IDE HD that I am
trying to install Debian on. Most of the literature I have read talks
about partioning in limited space. I was thinking I could make the 1st
partion (root) 1000 MB and the swap 100 MB, I have 64 MB Ram. Does this
sound reasonable? Will that make the rest of the HD dead space?
  Thanks,
  Kent

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but again, a root partition of
 1000MB seems awfully large.

Re: XFree86 Problem

1998-12-08 Thread Alan Tam
Hi Jeff;

Last night I've done a few things -- install the XFree86 X windows
system; run
the make xconfig; and finally compiled the kernel.

Get the basics of XFree86 from Debian
1. xbase
2. xfntbase
3. xlib6g
4. xserver-vga16 or xserver-svga or xserver-s3 which ever suits your
video
card
Install the xlib6g and any dependencies that is necessary, then the
xfntbase,
xbase, xserver-( ).
When you come to the xserver install get ready with your monitor data
and run
the SuperProbe to check for video card chipset and memory.
When you come to the run the preinstalled script for XFree86, I just
answer
no and I do the XFree86setup myself.
Finally it turns up with
Selected card definition
Identifier : Winfast 3D S600
Chipset : S3 ViRGE
Sever : XF86-svga
Do NOT probe clocks or use any Clocks line.
And then what follows is I don't select any RAMDAC (actually, I don't
know
what it is) or set any Clock chip; and lastly I end up with the program saying
your
XF86Config is in /etc/X11/XF86Config and that is it, all done.
But when you go through the steps go slowly one after one read the
questions
carefully and then answer them. You may need xfnt75 and xfnt100 package as well.
The main difference between you and me is that I haven't run the preinstalled
script
provided by XFree86. Try this out yourself and it's full of challenge. I feel
satisfaction when I run the startx command and compiled the kernel.

Jeff Browning wrote:

Is this correct? If not, how am I supposed to install xfree86?

Re: A few questions

1998-12-08 Thread Alan Tam
Hi Jeff;

Answer to Q1.
I re-run XF86Config setup program.
Initially I've been trying to setup X from xserver-vga16, then I go 1
step up
setting the server to SVGA by ' dpkg -i xserver-s3v.deb '. It just installs
and
ask you whether your want the SVGA server to be default or not. I said y then I
have a
SVGA server. But when I run startx the same screen size comes out except
the default colour is a bit different.
Then I go to the /etc/X11 directory and renamed XF86Config and
newserver.xserver-vga16 to some other file name and rerun the dpkg -i step. Now
it
asks me if I would like to configure XF86Config. Why, because it does not
detect the
original XF86Config file created last time so it asked for a new one. Now this
time
there is a pretty graphics screen, it is more easier to do the configuration.
Do the
mouse config first and when you come to the resolution part choose 800 x 600 24
bit or
if you have enough video ram in your video card then choose 32 bit colour.
That is your default.
After finishing config it will automatically start the X window, and by
exitting it there is a line saying XF86Config created. Done.
When you start startx again you have a 800 x 600 screen size and looks
more or
less the same as Win95.

Answer to Q3.
Debian has a Netscape installer program get it from there.
Attached here is a documentation about Netscape that I copied some days
ago
from the Web. Go and have a read, it should help you.

Other questions ? I don't know the answer. Some other gurus may help.

 2. Are there any nice, small, graphical web browsers that support a

X windows (or X or X11 or X11R6, all names for the same thing) is the
displayserver that creates windows on a graphical screen. You can run it by
itself, but normally don't since there is no easy way to control the windows
 you create.
A window manager is usually started after X, it puts frames and titles on
the windows, allows you to easily move or resize them, and gives pop-up
 menus
for various functions. The window manager is what gives the look and feel
to the display. Common window managers are mwm (Motif) and fvwm2. There is
 also
an fvwm95 that gives the look of Microsoft Windows 95, and several others
 such
as fvwm (the predecessor to fvwm2), olwm (with the old Sun OpenLook look),
 and
 cde/kde.
I believe the X HOWTO goes into most of these in pretty good detail and
may help you decide which ones you might want to try out.

Re: Using CFDISK - Help Required Urgently

1998-11-20 Thread Alan Tam

Boot your Linux and go to cfdisk.
Highlight the /dev/hda5 and at the bottom of the screen there is the
selection tabs.
Select type and press Enter, then you will see a lot of file systems
supported by
Linux, select Linux Swap numbered 82 and then Enter. Switch to write
and confirm
with yes, then you have a hard disk with /dev/hda1 as Linux native
with 335.18Mb
and a Linux swap with 0.50Mb.
Nothing will be done if you don't confirm the "yes" to write option.
Since your hard disk is not large enough, only 1 primary partition
for all the files in
Linux is OK (such as the root directory /, user directory /usr, as
well as /home,
/var, /tmp will all go into 1 partition).

Re: Dj660c-filter and stepping

Hi Bob,

My answer to your question is no and yes.
No, I don't have gs installed by the time I learn the command. When I
read the
/etc/magicfilter/dj550c-filter I found 2 lines that goes with gs, then I know
for
PostScript printing it requires GhostScript. At first, I don't know what are
the difference between gs and gs-aladdin package. I downloaded 2 and installed
2 by
typing gs the screen freezes at a white blank page. After I studied the dpkg
--info of these 2 packages I realized that they are in conflict to each other
from there I selected gs-aladdin instead of gs.
Now I have gs (aladdin) installed, but doing ' gs ' or ' gs
Tutorial.ps ' or
' gs -sDEVICE=cdj550 Tutorial.ps ' I got
Unknown paper size:(A4).
Unrecoverable error: stack under flow in dup.

From the install.txt.gz file of gs-aladdin, it says ( in the Unix

Hi Bob,

I have installed gs-fonts as well. I don't know how to use dselect (and
apart from that there are a lot of questions being asked about dselect), I use
dpkg
instead.
Dependency is not a problem for me since the Debian site manage the dependencies
very well and on installation the packages will remind me if I get something
missed
out.
Now I've tried ' man -t printcap | lpr ' it works well and also
' lpr Tutorial.ps ' (the tutorial file in /usr/doc/lprng-doc)
All worked well.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.

 Alan,

There is a bit more to it than typing 'gs something.ps'. You should print
practically everything using the magicfilter entry. Just type 'lpr
 filename.ps'.

gs-aladdin is a newer version than plain gs (it has a slightly more
restrictive license). It is pre-compiled in the Debian package.

Did you also install gs-fonts? If you use dselect or apt-get, you will
avoid (or at least minimize) dependency problems.

Hi Joseph,

Thank you for your suggestion. I've solved my printing problem from
the hints given by Bob and
Hernan.

There is a dj550c-filter in the magicfilter package from Debian and
replace the last command with '
default text ' as instructed by the installer and that is it. It works fine
now.

Wondering if someone could help me.I'm trying to change over from Win
95 to Debian, which would be fine if I could actually get the latter
installed. I'm using a Cheapbytes CD, and BIOS is set up to boot from the
CD drive. I press ENTER at the boot prompt, and a lot of technical info
flashes past on the screen, before everything comes to a complete halt. No
bootlog, since I can't actually get that far, so excuse my vague explanations!

I did manage to write down what was on screen at the time:

Ramdisk driver initialized: 16 ramdisks of 4096K size
loop: registered device at major 7
 hda: SAMSUNG VG34323A (4.32GB) gq033, 4124MB w/496KB cache, VHS=525/255/63
hdb: CD-ROM 24x/AKOx, ATAP CDROM drive

 ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
 ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x3f6 on irq 15
 Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
 FDC is a post-1991 82077
 md driver 0.35 MAX_MD_DEV=4, MAX_REAL=8

At which point everything just stops. No reboot, no error message. I left
it for 10 minutes one time, and nothing happened.
 My setup is:

 AMD K6 2 300
 Samsung 4.32 GB IDE HD
Western digital 1GB IDE HD (that I want to put Debian on)
 M1614TA IGB IDE HD
 Philips 24x CDROM
 Soundblaster clone
Cirrus Logic 5436 PCI display adapter
 Samsung Syncmaster 3 monitor

No SCSI cards/HDs, and I don't have any of the hardware mentioned in the
boot help options. I checked the Linux Hardware Compatability FAQ, and I
don't seem to have any hardware that could cause a problem as far as I
know. What am I missing? Why does it stop straight after the md driver
line? It's probably something really obvious that I'm overlooking...I'd be
 really grateful for any help.

 At the moment, 2.0 .

I keep hearing about debian 2.1...

We've just entered a code freeze for 2.1, meaning that we hope to release
2.1 in the not too distant future.

and where can I find a list of supported hardware and package version
  information??

Start at the website: http://www.debian.org .

Command `man' not available

1998-10-15 Thread Alan Tam
Hi Dear Debian Users,

I am a newbie to Linux. I just dowloaded the Debian 2.0 floppy
base installation set a few days ago. These includes
1. resc1440.bin5.
base14-1.bin9. base14-5.bin
2. drv1440.bin 6.
base14-2.bin 10. install.txt
3. fips15.zip7. base14-3.bin
4. rawrite2.exe 8. base14-4.bin

The installation process is smooth and booted OKay.
When I tried to use the command man by typing man whoami at the
$ prompt, the system respond with:
bash: man: command not found
then I looked at the /bin and /usr/bin with ls, there is no man !

Where is the man command as it was described in the
Debian Tutorial | Chapter 4 | The Basics | 4.1 The command line and man
pages on
http://www.debian.org/~hp/tutorial/debian-tutorial.html/ch-basics.html#s-basics-commandline
?

Thanks for your reply in advance.
