Missing library libXamwM.so.0
Hi, I am setting up siag-3.3.2 to work on my 2.1 box with 2.2.14 kernel. I have done ./configure, make, make install. Re: Cups 1.0.5
Hi Jim, Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me more about how you worked around it by changing some of the macros in the a2ps config files ? Temporary, I reinstalled the lprng package but could not print in kde (console, netscape wordperfect 8 is ok). Thank you. Alan Hi dear Debian gurus, I am a home user running slink (Debian 2.1). I've installed the cups 1.0.5 deb package which overwrites my original lprng package. But when I try to print something like lpr ~/.bashrc it says lpr: error -- no default destination avaiable I found that it would work if you put the printer name in the options to lpr. It would never work with the printer defaulted. I worked around it by changing some of the macros in the a2ps config files to always use the printer name. Not a general fix, but it worked for me. jim

Cups 1.0.5
Hi dear Debian gurus, I am a home user running slink (Debian 2.1). I've installed the cups 1.0.5 deb package which overwrites my original lprng package. But when I try to do lpr ~/.bashrc it says lpr: error -- no default destination avaiable then I go through the web for cups related docs and I found http://cups.sourceforge.net. Then I followed the steps 1. [bash] lpstat -o Enter == nothing comes out 2. [bash] cupsd Enter == [1] 523 (I've tried a few times, some are 629, 1003) 3. [bash] lpstat -o Enter == [1]+ Exit 98cupsd(I've win98 on the same disk) what is that mean ? Issued the command again lpr ~/.bashrc same error message. Then I try to add the printer by doing [bash] lpadmin -dHewlett Packard Deskjet 660C -vparallel:/dev/lp1 -mdeskjet.ppd it responds with: Authentication required for root on localhoist... UNIX Password: then I entered my root login password. It then responds with: lpadmin: set default failed: The requested resource was not found on this server. and jumped back to the command prompt. How to get cups up and running ? Thanks in advance. Alan

Hi Richard, Here maybe a bug in Wp8, but I am not sure, because I'm new to Linux. In the command window xterm I run the command less /usr/doc/dosemu/README.txt to view the contents. There are some headings for each paragraph listed (something like) in bold characters. On the other hand if I view it with Wp8 all those bold headings are not converted. Instead, it turns out to be square boxes. The README.txt file is originally in gzipped format (README.txt.gz of which I gunzipped it for Wp8 to read) while I choose ascii text format from the popup dialog box for convertion. Any idea to solve this problem ? Yesterday I saw an email complaining Wp8 more or less the same as I do. I am using Fvwm95 as my window manager, running Debian 2.0.34. Thanks in advance. Hi Martin, In what directory or file system should the guilg00.gz ( I downloaded it in a whole unit ) resite. Last time I got the Demo version in Win95 file system ( downloaded by Netscape through Getright ). After finished downloading I boot to Linux and mount the vfat file system to access the file. From there I extracted the file and run the Runme command, it compliants that a file is missing. So the installation was failed. A detailed setup procedure is most appreciated. Thanks in advance. Alan Tam Martin Bialasinski wrote: Hi, I did the download from ftp.funet.fi (actually any www.cdrom.com mirror should have it by now I guess). You may want to run the installation as root. To do this, either start X as root (or log in as root through xdm) or run ssh -l root localhost. I have Debian 2.0 official, both the Binary and Source disks say the same thing when I boot them up and try to install from cdrom. Can you use either, or? I'm fairly new myself, so don't take my responses as gospel. I'm not sure if you can use the Source CD for an initial install; I think you want to use the Binary. I went through the steps and everything seemed to go ok until I tried to partion the drive. I followed the instructions in the book. I select [New] and [Primary] then I can't change the size of the partion, it lets me make a 6149.89 MB partion but then can't go on to make a swap partion. The 6149.89 MB is my whole HD so maybe that is why I can't make another. At any rate I noticed the numbers lock isn't on and the numbers just don't work. I entered [US] when choosing a keyboard. I haven't yet figured out how to get the numlock to default On (that's low priority for now). You can us the numbers above the qwerty keyboard, or just press the NumLock key to turn on numlock. I don't think I'd use one partition for the system, although the system doesn't really care. It's just that later you might find it more useful if you've modularized the system some. I'd probably allocate 200MB for the root, maybe 300 if you want to be generous. Then maybe 64 or 128MB for the swap (you can't use more than 128MB for a single swap partition, I believe, and I think 64 would be more than adequate). The rest of the drive I'd probably evenly divide into partitions for /usr, /tmp, /var, and /home. Others would probably say this is overkill. If you have [an] existing partition[s], you may need to delete them first to make room for the scheme mentioned above (or whatever scheme you decide on). Be aware that partitioning will clean your drive of any existing data. Then when you create a new partition, don't let it use the entire space. One of the questions that cfdisk (or fdisk) asks is how big you want the partition (it automatically puts in 6149.89M for you, assuming it should use all the available space. Erase this and type in the size you want (such as 200M). I believe you can specify the size in megabytes by typing a number followed by M, but I'm not sure of the exact syntax. I think the on-screen hints will indicate how to do that. Once you've got the partitions created, you'll need to choose the Write option to actually write the changes to disk. #2. While I'm at it. I have a blank 6.4 gigabyte 2nd IDE HD that I am trying to install Debian on. Most of the literature I have read talks about partioning in limited space. I was thinking I could make the 1st partion (root) 1000 MB and the swap 100 MB, I have 64 MB Ram. Does this sound reasonable? Will that make the rest of the HD dead space? Thanks, Kent I'm not sure what you're referring to, but again, a root partition of 1000MB seems awfully large. -- Kent West [EMAIL PROTECTED] KC5ENO - Amateur Radio: When all else fails. Re: XFree86 Problem
Hi Jeff; Last night I've done a few things -- install the XFree86 X windows system; run the make xconfig; and finally compiled the kernel. Get the basics of XFree86 from Debian 1. xbase 2. xfntbase 3. xlib6g 4. xserver-vga16 or xserver-svga or xserver-s3 which ever suits your video card Install the xlib6g and any dependencies that is necessary, then the xfntbase, xbase, xserver-( ). When you come to the xserver install get ready with your monitor data and run the SuperProbe to check for video card chipset and memory. When you come to the run the preinstalled script for XFree86, I just answer no and I do the XFree86setup myself. Finally it turns up with Selected card definition Identifier : Winfast 3D S600 Chipset : S3 ViRGE Sever : XF86-svga Do NOT probe clocks or use any Clocks line. And then what follows is I don't select any RAMDAC (actually, I don't know what it is) or set any Clock chip; and lastly I end up with the program saying your XF86Config is in /etc/X11/XF86Config and that is it, all done. But when you go through the steps go slowly one after one read the questions carefully and then answer them. You may need xfnt75 and xfnt100 package as well. The main difference between you and me is that I haven't run the preinstalled script provided by XFree86. Try this out yourself and it's full of challenge. I feel satisfaction when I run the startx command and compiled the kernel. Re: A few questions
Hi Jeff; Answer to Q1. I re-run XF86Config setup program. Initially I've been trying to setup X from xserver-vga16, then I go 1 step up setting the server to SVGA by ' dpkg -i xserver-s3v.deb '. It just installs and ask you whether your want the SVGA server to be default or not. I said y then I have a SVGA server. But when I run startx the same screen size comes out except the default colour is a bit different. Then I go to the /etc/X11 directory and renamed XF86Config and newserver.xserver-vga16 to some other file name and rerun the dpkg -i step. Now it asks me if I would like to configure XF86Config. Why, because it does not detect the original XF86Config file created last time so it asked for a new one. Now this time there is a pretty graphics screen, it is more easier to do the configuration. Do the mouse config first and when you come to the resolution part choose 800 x 600 24 bit or if you have enough video ram in your video card then choose 32 bit colour. That is your default. After finishing config it will automatically start the X window, and by exitting it there is a line saying XF86Config created. Done. When you start startx again you have a 800 x 600 screen size and looks more or less the same as Win95. Answer to Q3. Debian has a Netscape installer program get it from there. You can run it by itself, but normally don't since there is no easy way to control the windows you create. A window manager is usually started after X, it puts frames and titles on the windows, allows you to easily move or resize them, and gives pop-up menus for various functions. The window manager is what gives the look and feel to the display. Common window managers are mwm (Motif) and fvwm2. There is also an fvwm95 that gives the look of Microsoft Windows 95, and several others such as fvwm (the predecessor to fvwm2), olwm (with the old Sun OpenLook look), and cde/kde. Hi David, Use your browser (Netscape) to download it and save the page as *.txt. But normally Linux is an image file, if you save it as a text file you can't boot your system in text format. Re: downloading kernel image
I had the same problem before. After that I used Getright (in Win95) to download it or as Bob said use an FTP client if you are familiar with the FTP software. Re: Dj660c-filter and stepping
Hi Joseph, Thank you for your suggestion. I've solved my printing problem from the hints given by Bob and Hernan. There is a dj550c-filter in the magicfilter package from Debian and replace the last command with ' default text ' as instructed by the installer and that is it. It works fine now. Thank you. Re: Dj660c-filter and stepping
Hi Bob, Thank you for your info, but the command ' man -t printcap|lpr ' didn't work. With your hint I tried ' man printcap|lpr ' it works. Printing perfectly without any stepping at all. Thanks anyway. Since I am new to Linux, I don't know the command style in Unix/GNU/Linux. Now I know the symbol '|' means piping. In Dos I usually use 'type printcap lpt1' and that will print to the printer. Thank you. A question on how to eliminate the stepping effect when I issue the command man printcap /dev/lp1 The reason you are getting the stepping is that this is going as raw data to the printer, not through any filter. You need to pipe it through lpr, not send it directly to /dev/lp1. The ghostscript printer compatibility page (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/printer.html) indicates that the cdj550 driver (which is called by dj550c-filter) is the correct one to use with the 660C, so you should use the dj550c-filter in magicfilter. To print a man page, use 'man -t printcap|lpr'. From the Printing-HowTo, there is an example #!perl #The above line should really have the whole path to perl #This script must be executable: chmod 755 filter while (STDIN){chop $_; print $_\r\n;); #You might also want to end with a form feed: print \f; Should I leave the STDIN as is or replace it with lp1 or something else ? The easy way is to let magicfilter do the work for you. Bob Bob Nielsen Internet: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tucson, AZ AMPRnet: [EMAIL PROTECTED] DM42nh http://www.primenet.com/~nielsen
