Annoying file access behavior

2001-11-14 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Hi all.
I have a bit of a problem. Every time I work with big files (movies,
converting mp3s to wavs for ripping), my system slows down to a crawl for
some time, while it is emptying the buffers. Here's a quick example:
I'm converting mp3 into wav using xmms. The whole song will convert
without any disk access whatsoever, then, after the song is over, the
system basically stalls while the .wav file is dumped to the disk.
This behavior is really really annoying me. Every once in a while,
especially with big files around 50-100M, I have to sit there for maybe
10-20 seconds while system is practically frozen up.
Is there any resolution to this? I'm going to upgrade to the latest 2.4
kernel soon, using 2.4.5 right now.
Please CC me, I am not subscribed.
Thanks,
  Andrei

Using netscape to access weird ports

2001-09-27 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Recently I've had to move my webserver from port 80 to another
port (TimeWarner finally blocked off 80 for all personal accounts). For
some dumb reason I chose 79, and now Netscape gives me security errors
saying that access to this port has been disabled for security reasons.
There gotta be a way to disable that security check in Netscape.ad, I just
can't seem to find the option. Does anyone know which option in which file
has to be removed/modified to allow netscape access to port 79?
Please cc me, I am not subscribed.
Thanks,
  Andrei

xmms problems?

2001-06-27 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Hi all.
Lately I've been experiencing some weird problems on the box. every so
often (rather often, like every 5 min or so), the CPU load would increase
dramatically for a few seconds, and pretty much the whole box would almost
freeze: mouse movement is very incremental, keyboard input is not
accepted. This seems to happen when I'm using xmms 1.2.4-5.
I have glibc2.2.3, 2.4.5 kernel, X 4.0.3
Any ideas?
TIA,

Re: bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

2001-06-09 Thread Andrei Ivanov
As a different post has suggested, it probably is a mixture of process and
file table problem. The best solution would have been to reboot the
system, and then pay close attention to it over the next few days to see
how it goes. Also, as some processes die and before new ones spawn, you
may be able to log into the system. Other than that, I'm not sure what you
can do.

 Hi,

i seem to have a problem with my Debian box.

When i try to login to it using ssh it accepts
the login but then instead of the bash prompt
 i get the following erromsg:

 bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

This has never happened before and i didn't
anything in the configuration since my last remote login.

 What could be the problem?

 imre

I've seen this before, and it has got something to do with too many
processes running on the system, eating up the file descriptor table. We
had a system in the office that had 50-some instances of a process
running, and were getting this message (I believe). Please correct me if
I'm wrong.

Re: [users] Unkillable process

  scorpio 7314 0.0 3.8 2 4876 tty1 DMay10 0:00
  /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla-bin

this is a straight-forward failure of the linux kernel. it's a dead
process, it doesn't listen to anything anymore. there is no way you
can remove it without a reboot. the process is in uniterruptible
sleep state (implying it's doing some kind of i/o), but it's
definitely not interested in handling signals (even SIGKILL, which
you're the kernel isn't supposed to let you ignore). had plenty of
them, never succeeded without a reboot. but what do you care? just
leave them? they aren't eating anything away.

Thanks.
Problem is this:
now that I have a dead mozilla process in the background, netscape doesnt
want to run without manual interaction (when I run netscape as that user,
I'll have to manually kill a process that pops up because netscape saw a
mozilla process already running). It's not bad, but it gets kinda
messy after a while.

Unkillable process

2001-05-22 Thread Andrei Ivanov
'm running a 2.4.3 kernel with 2.2.1 glibc. Every now and then
unkillable
processes popup on my system (usually something that didnt shut down
properly). It was xemacs once (and a ton of different processes that it
runs), which prevented me running xemacs again as that user. Now it's
mozilla .9. I have 2 processes sitting there doing nothing but preventing
me starting netscape as a user. ps aux shows:
scorpio 7314 0.0 3.8 2 4876 tty1 DMay10 0:00
/usr/local/mozilla/mozilla-bin

and I cant kill it with any signal. Short of restarting machine I dont
have any way to get rid of them. Is there a better solution or an
explanation why this happens?

 4.0.x and a 3dfx board?

it _seems_ to work, but framerates are low... not at low as with software
rendering, but low. i also get horrible flicker when polygons are redrawn.

i was told that installing libglide3 would help - it did, but not
enough. i still have the same problems. i also tried the debs of cvs
dri. it did not help at all.

everything worked perfectly with xfree86 3.3.6, mesag3-glide2 and
 libglide2.

 my system is a k6-3 500, 192mb ram, with a voodoo3 2000 16mb agp card.

not on the list, so please cc any replies to me.

I've pretty much followed the docs on DRI and X site about setting up the
Voodoo3 card. Points of note:
1. You need either the kernel tdfx module, or DRI one.
2. DRI ONLY works in 16bpp, not 24bpp (took me a while to get that one).
3. I use xlibmesa3 and xlibosmesa3 libs.

2001-05-17 Thread Andrei Ivanov
irt point 1, i have the agpgart tdfx modules that came with 2.4.4 loaded
 - afaik the dri stuff is all loaded in the x server, not the kernel. am i
 wrong on this point?

 i'm running in 16bpp, and i have xlib[os]mesa3 installed.

From what I remember, you can get dri from both kernel source AND
dri.sourceforge.net
Advantage of kernel being that it's compiled with the kernel together, you
can compile it straight into the kernel, and X wont know the difference.
Advantage of dri.sourceforge.net being that you get the latest DRI
version. But the way it works is that X will have to load dri module when
it starts up. But it doesnt matter where it's loaded from: whether it's
already in the kernel, or it's in hte X modules, it'll work the same.

Re: Video Drivers

 Hello.

I have and S3 Virge card (Diamond Stealth 2000) and would like to
know how to install the proper XF86 server/driver. And where I can locate
 it with apt-get.

It depends which X you have. in stable, you'll have to use either SVGA
server, or S3 (I'd use xserver-svga). In unstable, it's all xserver-common
with s3 driver, I think.
Or just run hte xf86config and it'll tell you which server you need, and
you can then apt-get it.

chipset support.
In X, put in
Load glx
Load dri

xlibmesa3 and xlibosmesa3. The best document you can read on this issue is
the DRi user guide on X's page (http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.3/DRI.html), it
explains how to vefiry you have everything setup.

X keyboard problems

components to 4.0.2 (some apps like gimp1.2 is precompiled for 4.0.2

3.3.6. They both coexist happily, except for one thing...
XKB doesnt work, which means that I dont have delete and backspace
buttons, I have to ^H my way through my typoes.
The message X spits out is this:
cannot open keymap/xfree86 for reading
Could not open XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB
Can anyone please help me with this? I dont know how much code without
typoes I can write :)

took, what extra bits need to be done.

Here's what I did:
1. Install mysql and mysql-dev. Server and client.
2. Get php source.
3. Get apache source
4. Build apache with DSO support (in the README)
5. Go to php tree and follow instructions on how to build php with mod_php
for apache. Basically, compile it from source, with some extra
instructions.
And that works perfectly

 alias midi awe_wave
 post-install awe_wave /usr/bin/sfxload /usr/synthfm.sbk
 options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330

to the /etc/modules.conf file, but executing:

 modprobe -a sound

doesn't install the drivers. At least they are not reportet executing
 cat /dev/sndstat

Make sure that modules are getting build and are where they are
supposed to be.

I'd try to install those modules by hand using insmod.
This is what I do on my box:
insmod uart401.o
insmod opl3.o
insmod sb.o io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
insmod v_midi.o
insmod awe_wave.o

Check hte logs, dmesg: if modules arent getting inserted successfully,
there will be something in hte logs.
Check that devices exist in /dev , if not, MAKEDEV audio.
Check that your user can write to those devices (play around as root first
to get them to work).

There is no Debian hardware list. Such as there is no RedHat hardware

1.7-1.8 Afterstep has a builtin theme support.
You can use that engine, or do it by hand, just untar the tarball, and put

If you will use the theme engine, go to GNUstep/Library/Afterstep/themes
directory, and put your tarball there. Next update all, and under

restart the AS session). Click on it and it should install fine.

Its a PNP, so you need:
1. Install isapnp package.
2. Run pnpdump and create a config file for your card.
3. Run isapnp with that file. Use IRQ,IO, etc settings same as you supply
to your kernel (if possible. pnpdump will tell you).
4. Compile sound support as a module.
5. reboot with your new kernel, and insert sound modules.
I have a small guide written up on how to configure modem with
isapnpits the same thing.

Ethernet-HOWTO suggests and you turn off the PnP mode, and set it to a

I swapped card out of computer, put it into a windows machine, ran the

support into kernel, and it worked perfect.

Re: 3 questions. Please, HELP ME!

2000-04-01 Thread Andrei Ivanov
1. [snip]

 2. My distribution doesn't make some device files, such as /dev/modem,
 /dev/audio, /dev/mixer, /dev/sndstat (I cannot use my SoundBlaster PCI
 64,
and I use my modem with device file /dev/ttyS1 directly). How can I
 workaround this?

Those devices, some of htem, are just symlinks. For example, /dev/modem/
is a symlink to /dev/ttyS1, so if you run ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem, it
will make the symlink for you.
As far as audio goes, to create those devices you need to go to /dev and
./MAKEDEV audio
However, prior to that you have to include sound support into kernel, and
with PCI card I am not sure hwo to do that (I think it is PnP, then you
are sorta screwed.)
Read Sound-HOWTO and Kernel-HOWTO for that. You can find them at
linuxdoc.org

 3. I have the defrag utility. How can I defragment my Linux partition,
since a mounted drive cannot be defragmented?

Well, one way is to unmount the partition (umount /zip , f.e) and defrag
it. If its a /usr or /, then if you really wan to defrag it, then you have
to do some more worka LOT more work. So dont worry about it. How big
is the defragmentation, how many files you have and how big the partition
is?

Re: Memory (RAM) problems?

2000-03-29 Thread Andrei Ivanov
This is normal, and done by kernel to keep memory full all the time, so
access time to binaries is less (so your machine works faster). This can
only be a problem on systems with low RAM (I remember having 48M, and
having it all full.going into swap even when I was just running X
alone). If you don't like it, there are 2 files you can tweak:
/proc/sys/vm/pagecache and /proc/sys/vm/buffermem
Read about them in kernel docs, but with 256M you have nothing to worry
about. Just turn off the swap, and never touch it again.

Re: Oh no, not another AWE64 question

2000-03-23 Thread Andrei Ivanov
I have Awe64 and managed to get it to work. Here is how I did it:
1. isapnp it. WHen you run pnpdump, you'll get 2 files: isapnp.conf and
isapnp.gone.
.gone file will tell you where NOT to put the card. Based on that
information, make hte .conf file appropriately.
I found that my card works perfectly without the Wave-table, so really all
you need to setup in isapnp.conf is the first card entry.
2. WHen this is done, compile kernel, and include everything you need as
modules. Soundcard M, OSS M, SB M, Opl3 synth. M, and low-level
driver Awe64 M.
Maybe I'm mising one or two, I'm doing this from memory.
3. make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install.
4. reboot.
5. Go to /usr/src/linux/modules, and
lsmod to make sure you have no modules installed for sound.
modprobe sound
insmod uart401
insmod opl3
insmod sb param. from isapnp.conf

Also, you may need to go to /dev and
./MAKEDEV audio
Then addgroup user audio.

This pretty much is it.

I realize this is a hard way to do this, but it works for me.

If you are using PS/2 mouse, your mouse is located on /dev/psaux
/dev/ttyS0-4 are serial ports, so you need to know exactly where it is.
Rerun xf86config or XF86Setup and set the right mouse type and device.

Compiling X

2000-03-08 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Hi all. I recently had to build 3.3.6 version for glibc2.0. Went
smoothhowever, after I replaced video card this morning, and reran
XF86Setup, I ran into problems with users starting X (root can do it
fine):
Fatal Server Error:
xf86OpenConsole: Server must be running with root
permissions. You should be using Xwrapper to start server or xdm. We
strongly advise against making server SetUID.

I've recompilied X and turned off all SetUID flags I could find but
nothing seems to work still. And I kinda want to get back into user shell
(for one thing, I can not use netscape and xchat, I'd stay root if not
those things). Any suggestions?

I need to use 3.3.6 b/c of my video card, and only 3.2.11 version is
avaibliel for slink that I use. I dont want to upgrade to potato right
now, until I can get a CD. I don't think I could install 3.3.6 from
potato b/c of the dependencies, unless I upgrade the systemam I wrong
on that?
Andrew

 Why are you compiling X??
 Do you know debian packages?
To my experience they work a lot easier then compiling yourself
Just download the .deb packages you need (or use apt, you want the newest
x but perhaps you don't want to upgrade your whole system to potato or
woody, in that case you should download) and install them using dpkg...

ipchains. Read the IPCHAINS-HOWTO. Or just disable all the services

Re: securing ports

2000-03-07 Thread Andrei Ivanov

Which ports are inadvisable for closing? TIA, John N.

It depends on what you do on the net. For example, some irc servers
(irc.prison.net is one of tehm) require for you to run ident in order to
connect to them.
Obviously, you wnat to turn off useless ports...discard, daytime, time,
finger, etc.
Just go into /etc/inetd.conf and comment out services you don't want inetd
to listen for. Like telnet.if you want to have outside access into
machine, use ssh (port 22).

So really you can have all ports closed off, that can be closed
with inetd, but you will still need ipchains to secure other ports lke
6000 (X).
To see the list of ports open on your machine, netstat or nmap yourself.

Re: set up AWE 64

2000-03-07 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Process of setting up AWE64 is as follows:
1. isapnp it.
2. Compile sound support in kernel as modules
3. make bzImage
4. make modules
5. make modules_install
6. reboot for new kernel
7. modprobe sound
8. insmod uart_401
9. insmod opl3
10. insmod sb with parameters from the isapnp file, as the card has been
initialized.
11. Try it. I found that my card worked without adlib module and anything
else, with just those modules

Re: LILO

1999-11-02 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Please help...I just re-installed Debian completely from scratch after
having some problems with xwindows. I am dual booting using Boot Magic.
Everything went real well this time. However, now when I want to go into
Linux, Lilo hangs at boot up and won't do anything. What has happened,
and what do I have to do to fix this? I do have my boot disks. Also, I
would like to know how to get Netscape going. Finally, I have my modem
and ethernet working. Had to add the drivers. Yeh. But now I want to get
Netscape. Thanks for your help. Ray Ferrari.

What happens at the boot? Do you get LI and then it hands, or what? Send
the lilo.conf file so we can take a look at it.
Netscape : just download files off the archive for navigator, and it will
work fine.

Re: mouse

1999-10-31 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Very simple. Get the COM port where the mouse is from Windows. Then just
follow a simple formula : Com1=/dev/ttyS0, Com2=/dev/ttyS1 and so on. That
is the serial port that you put in when xf86config asks you for mouse
port. For protocol you select Microsoft Serial (or something like that,
it's #1 there, I think).

You go back into linux. By default thesystem will detect unclean shutdown

Re: Configuring X

1999-10-24 Thread Andrei Ivanov

 Hi,
Due to the advice of a few wise individuals, I continue to make
slow, but steady progress in getting Debian 2.1 installed on my IBM
390E laptop. I am a newbie and am currently trying to get X Windows
running. I have tried both xf86config and XF86Setup and still am having
 problems.
(A little background): My video card is a NeoMagic 256AV with
2.5meg of memory. My screen is capable of 1024 X 768 resolution at 60kHz.
When I try to start X Windows, I get a fatal server error: No
valid modes found. Can anyone give me some advice regarding what to do
next? Or, is there by any chance someone out there running Debian on an
IBM 390E that can give tell me how they have configured X?

No valid modes found means that you are trying to push X into running
resolutions that it thinks your card can not handle.
I'd suggest you start at the bottom level , something like 640x480 and
work your way up.

Re: Looking for monitor sync settings

1999-10-23 Thread Andrei Ivanov
During xf86config it says that I may find info on my monitor by reading
/usr/doc/xserver-common/monitors.gz I do not know how to look at this file.

cd to that directory, then type gunzip monitors.gz
Then you can view the file.
If you can't find any info on the monitor on the net, I sugest you start
at the bottom and work your way up the settings. Like, choose most
conservaative settings for hsync/vsync.
Also, check the server you are running. What video card do you have?
You could start with SVGA server, if your card is compatible with it.

Do I want or need x on my computer? I am interested in running spreadsheet
and database programs like star office or similar.

Yeah, for StarOffice you will need X. It's generally a good idea to have
it on a computer.

Re: Configuring LILO in Debian

1999-10-23 Thread Andrei Ivanov
Is it possible to go in and configure LILO to add dos as a
boot: option? If so, can someone tell me how to do this?

Here is a lilo file I use:

boot = /dev/hda
root = /dev/hdb2
install = /boot/boot.b
map = /boot/map
vga = normal
delay = 50
ramdisk = 0

read-only
default = linux

image = /vmlinuz
label = Debian
alias = linux

image = /boot/vmlinbackup
label = backup

other = /dev/hda1
label = MS
table = /dev/hda

The last 2 blocks are responsible for loading different OSs( backup kernel
and windows). You can just change this around a little and dos loading
would work for you.

Re: netscape, arena etc in root

1999-10-19 Thread Andrei Ivanov

After installing the system from zero for the 4th time, I made the
mistake of running a few browsers as root from root, so I ended up with
a few arena. lynx and so on directories there, which I deleted thinking
contained only cache or so. Any way, now they run with trouble, i.e.,
 don't run good.
 1. What exactly shoud I do, and how?
 Thanks,
 Antonio

Reinstall them. You can not reconstruct the .directory by hand, at least
it's not an efficient way.

Re: hdparm - hard disk tuning

1999-10-17 Thread Andrei Ivanov
 Hi

Has anyone had any experience using hdparm to increase the performance of
your ide hard drives? Does it work and are there any drawbacks? Is there
any software which can measure hard drive performance?

I've used it, and it worked well.
I think I've maxed the performance out on my drives. The drawbacksI am
not sure. My drives are at least 4 years old and working fine.
hdparm -tT device measures the speed of your hard drive transfer rate
(-t is read to memory, -T read to disk cache)
