null password
I am setting up an old SparIPC to run debian linux. The main function of this machine to provide ppp login service. I have a user 'ppp' that I need to be able to login without a password. The authentication is then done with pap. The default shell for 'ppp' is then /usr/sbin/pppd. '/usr/sbin/pppd' is in /etc/shells. I can't seem to figure out how to let this user login without a password. Does anyone know how todo this? Thanks for your help. Bob

sound help
To all, I'm trying to get sound working on my laptop. Windows reports it as a Yamaha Opl3-SAx WDM Driver The sound howto says that the Yamaha Opl3-Sax sound chip is supported. So I went to my misc directory for my kernal modules and saw three opl3 modules. I tried modprobe all of them. The opl3.o module is the only one that modprobed sucessfully. But when I cated /dev/sndstat it came up with nothing. The sound howto talks about how to compile the drivers into the kernel, but I'd like to use modules if possible. I couldn't find any docs on the debian web page for configuring sound. I've configured sound before but it was useing redhat's sndconfig program. So my question is: am I useing the right module, and how do I get this to work. Thanks for all your help. Bob
Re: sound help

More dhcpcd and pcmcia questions
When trying to start dhcpcd from the 'network.opts' file dhcpcd never picks up the network information. When I run /etc/init.d/dhcpcd start it works fine as long as I don't switch networks(see previous post). What happens when I boot the system with 'DHCP=y' in the 'network.opts' file is that the card gets initialized but there is no ip address, broadcast address, or network mask associated with it. Any ideas? Thanks for the help. Bob

RE: debian vs redhat
- who have administered both dists. I have administered both boxes. As mentioned with redhat you can not use both linuxconf and edit the scripts by hand. As far as the scripts with redhat once you inderstand how they are put together you can edit them by hand just as easy as another dist. My biggest reason for making the RedHat to debain switch was because of the package manager. The debian package manager is much nicer, cleaner, and use ful then the redhat package manager. I have also never successfully upgraded a redhat box from one version to another. I always end up reinstalling redhat. When debian made the libc to glibc switch everything went smoothly. RedHat has some to learn. Bob

xircom pcmcia card
Hello, I've got a problem getting my xircom Ethernet+Modem multifunction card working right. The first problem is that I can't get the card manager to automatically load the modules for the card. The second problem is that even when I do modprobe the module. When I run ifconfig it tells me that the device doesn't exist. The strange thing is that about one out of ten times though it does actually work. I've retraced my steps on the few times I've gotten it to work but have not been able to reproduce the results of it working. I'm running kernel 2.2.10 if any one has experience with this card please let me know. It is the one without the doggles on it. Thanks again for your help. Bob
