Re: DOS client with SAMBA
Hi, I want to know if that tcp/ip dos client disk made on WIN NT CDROM can be used for SAMBA client? Yes, it works. At least I have used it with versions of Samba up to 2.0.8. But I see no reason for which it should not work for newer versions as well. Cleto -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Antivirus for Sendmail
Hello, Does anyone know of a decent product for Sendmail that will scan emails for viruses? Is a virus scanner even a good idea to try an implement? I haven't read much on them, but my employer has been bothering me about it for some time now. Any products that anyone would suggest (that work with Debian, of course :)? Thanks! I use AntiVir Mailgate on several Debian dial-up servers, and it works very well. You can find more about it on http://www.hbedv.com Cleto
Re: Virus Filter for Debian Mail Server
Hello, Can anyone recommend a program that will parse email messages for viruses going in and out of my Debian email server? We use AntiVir MailGate for Linux together with sendmail on several mail servers, both on leased-lines and on dialup connections, and it works very well. You can find it at http://www.antivir.de/. Hope this helps. -- Cleto

Apple G4 with MacOS 9.1 unable to connect to Debian 2.2 box
Hello, I've run into a weird problem trying to have a PowerMac G4 with MacOS 9.1 connect to a Debian Linux 2.2 box (kernel 2.2.18). A friend of mine has a small network of Macs, with several releases of MacOS, all connected to a Debian 2.2 box acting as firewall / IP masquerading server for Internet connection. Netatalk is installed and working as expected, even on the G4. What does not work at all is the TCP/IP connection between G4 and the Debian server. Only a tiny fraction of packets is detected by tcpdump when using ping. But ping works from and to the G4 for all other systems. All IP addresses used internally are static and belong to the 192.168.1.0 Class C, with the Debian systems' Ethernet interface configured as 192.168.1.1. Oddly enough, when I substituted the Debian box with a similar FreeBSD server, the problem disappeared. Does anyone know if this problem is due to a flawed TCP/IP stack in MacOS 9.1? Any hint is welcome. Cleto

Is there any way to make LINUX as server and acces it form DOS as client One way is to use Samba on the Linux box and MS Client 3.0 on the DOS client. HP JetDirect and Debian
Hello, I am experiencing a strange problem with an HP JetDirect J2552A (firmware A.3.0.16) printer server installed in an HP DesignJet 750C plotter. I can telnet to the plotter and configure it from a Debian 2.0 box, but I can not send anything to it. I have tried *everything* reported in the Printing-HOWTO, included the small Perl script to directly access the JetDirect through port 9100, but without success.. The Debian box has LPRng installed on it, and the spooling software works perfectly. I have read on the Bug Tracking mailing-list that LPRng seems not to be able to talk to networked printers, but I am not sure if that applies to my case as well, since even direct TCP connection does not work for me... What really drives me nuts is the fact that the same plotter works without any glitches if accessed from two NT 3.51 boxes via Microsoft's LPR service... One more thing: When I use lpq on the networked plotter, in addition to the info from LPRng I get the following line: JetDirect lpd: no entries. So it seems that at least *something* is understood by the JetDirect. Does anyone have an idea what else I could try? Thanks in advance for any help! Cleto

Re: Greenbush?
Hello, Funny you should mention this as I ordered two weeks ago as well and have not received anything. I have been assured by [EMAIL PROTECTED] that my order shipped and must have gotten lost `; ( . He (only minutes ago) sent me an e-mail indicating that a replacement order was packaged and moments away from going to the post office. I encourage you to e-mail directly to the above address and to put PLEASE RESPOND in the subject as that seems to get their attention. Anyone else had any experience with Greenbush? I'm sorry to have to say this, but I recommend *not* to order from Greenbush, since they seem to have quite a lot of problems... I ordered a Debian 1.3.1 CD set several months ago and *never* got anything from them, even if my credit card was charged and Mr. Wade assured me he had regained control of his operation after firing a bad employee responsible for the mess... As far as I can tell I am not alone in having had negative experiences with Greenbush. Cleto
Problem running Debian 2.0 on an ATT Globalyst S10 server
Hello, Sorry for the slightly off-topic question, but I am not sure to what extent it can be Debian 2.0-related... I have managed to install Debian 2.0 on an older ATT Globalyst S10 server, which ran NetWare 3.12 for a couple of years. The first strange thing was that I had to use the tecra resce disk, because the standard one failed to terminate the boot process. Then, after I got the system up and running, I compiled a custom 2.0.34 kernel with support for the built-in Adaptec 7870 (BIOS v.1.11, dated 1994), and that's when I started observing the following two problems: - Random reboots at boot time (just after the Loading Linux.). That didn't happen with the kernel used for the installation. - The internal Wang DAT Model 3200 tape is never recognized by Linux, even if it shows up in the initial devices list shown by the Adaptec BIOS. The system currently has 4 SCSI devices in it: - one 1GB Conner HDD (ID #0) - one Quantum Fireball SE 4.6GB (ID #1) - a TEAC CD-ROM drive (ID #2) - a Wang 3200 DAT tape drive (ID #3) The Adaptec controller is at ID #6. The SCSI chain is terminated at the CD-ROM drive. I have browsed DejaNews looking for definitive answers, but without much success... Am I definitely out of luck with this particular setting? Could the Adaptec BIOS be too old? What else could I try? Thanks for any help! Cleto
Re: pcmcia install help
Hi, I happened to experience problems similar to yours while trying to install a NE2000-compatible Ethernet PC Card, and I solved them by downloading the source package for pcmcia-cs_3.0.0 and compiling it on the notebook. (I used Win95 to download it to the notebook, and then copied it to the Linux partition... But you can also use diskettes, of course ;-) The sources compiled just fine on the completely Debian 1.3.1-based (libc5) notebook. Just follow the instructions contained in the README file in /usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs. Please note that you also need a full kernel source tree in order to compile the pcmcia package. Cleto On Tue, 21 Apr 1998, Michael Stutz wrote: Now I am thoroughly confused. I installed pcmcia-cs_2.9.6-2.deb, which I found on my Debian 1.3.1 CD, and it complained that the actual modules were missing. The only pcmcia module package I could find on the CD were pcmcia-modules-2.0.29_2.9.5-2.deb and pcmcia-modules-2.0.30_2.9.5-3.deb; I tried installing both of them and it didn't work; both requires a difference pcmcia-cs pagackage (2.9.5-2, while the one I have is 3.0.0-5). There is also the question of whether or not it will work on this kernel, which is 2.0.32. So I went to www.debian.org and downloaded pcmcia-modules-2.0.32_3.0.0-5k5.deb. Well, that package is dependent on pcmcia-cs_3.0.0-5.deb, so I downloaded that, and then I got the error that it needed libc6. Now, I have no idea what I should do to get Debian working. I'm ready to conclude that you cannot install Debian on a laptop that uses a pcmcia modem as its primary interface to the world. I would really love it if somebody proved me wrong. Pioneer DRM-602X multi-CD player and AHA-2940AU with Debian 1.3.1?
Hello, I'm trying to get a Multi-CD player Pioneer DRM-602X to work on a Debian 1.3.1 system (kernel 2.0.33 custom-compiled using make-kpkg) with an Adaptec 2940AU SCSI controller, but without luck... The various CD-ROM drives get different LUNs at boot-up, but then I get timeout errors while trying to mount the CDs. The SCSI chain also contains a Samsung SCSI HDD (ID 0), a SCSI CD-ROM drive from MediaVision (ID 1) and an HP DAT C1533A streamer (ID 2). As far as I can tell, termination is OK, as is the external SCSI cable. The kernel SCSI options also seem to be correctly set. Any idea on how to make this thing work would be greatly appreciated! I'm sorry for being slightly off-topic, but a search on www.dejanews.com and www.reference.com didn't produce any useful results... Re: SCSI controller
I'm thinking of buying a SCSI for my computer. However, I have no experience in this field. I'd like to buy some that works well with Linux. What do you think of Adaptec and Western Digital? Only BusLogic (Mylex) is guranteed to work properly under Linux. Yes, I can confirm that. All BusLogic boxes I've put together never ever had a single problem with the SCSI subsystem. If you want / need a critical-mission grade machine, go with Mylex. But Adaptec's AHA-2940 and its variations (UltraSCSI and Wide) aren't *that* bad either -- although it is true that there is no official support from Adaptec. German CHIP Extra Magazine with GNI/Debian 1.3.1 CD-ROM
Hello, I've just picked up a copy of the latest issue of the German magazine CHIP Extra (Issue 1/98), which comes with a CD-ROM containing Debian 1.3.1 and the Beta version of StarOffice 4.0 for Linux (They call it stable, but I could not check that -- at least not yet). Subjects covered range from Why Linux? to Linux as a Mail, News and Proxy Server -- everything from a Debian perspective, of course. Highly recommended to German-speaking Debians or would-be Debians. The cost is DM 19.80. Some information, although mostly in German, can be found at www.chip.de Cleto P.S.: I have *no* connection of *any* kind with the publishers / editors of CHIP. Strange Behaviour with ALS100-based Sound Card Loaded as Module
Hello, I'm experiencing a strange problem with my ALS100-based SB16-compatible PnP sound card: Although isapnp is detecting and configuring the card correctly, and the sound module loads as expected (i.e. cat /proc/sndstat reports the expected configuration), I can only play MIDI files right after the boot. If I play WAV or AU files, I get a DMA timeout error. It is only after rerunning isapnp that everything works as expected! Does anyone have an idea why this happens?
