Life behind a firewall?
I need quick advice on this problem (quick means by 12:00pm EST Fri 15th.). My employer has finally decided to impliment security measures. They are installing some big firewall system, there by rendering my humble Debian and Sun boxes silent. They are masq. IPs and allowing basicly only http traffic. What I know is that the box has three interfaces, external (main IP router connected), Outside (DNS, WWW, mail? servers connected), and Trusted (the rest of the College WAN including my Deb. boxes, and Sun boxes). I've gotten used to having unrestricted access, and don't quite know what to do about this. Losing the server this mail is sent from will be a great loss. How do I cope with the big brother attitude? (it hasn't been my servers that have been attacked). The only connection points I'll have are on the trusted side of the wall. In fact the wall will be on the other end of a WAN connection at our main campus. Basicly advice on dealing with the new network, and possibly cases or arguments to use with admin. One concern is how are my students going to telnet in for Unix practice and assignments? They are not going to allow telnet access through the firewall. Xisp problems
I'm installing Debian on a notebook, and have to connect to several different ISPs in different cities. I would like to use Xisp, but I keep getting xforms not installed when dselect tries to configure it. I can't seem to find anything but xforms0 and xforms-dev. Neither of them seem to satisfy deselect for configuring xisp. Any hints? -- | Canadore College | Phone: 705 474-7600 X6439 Darren Renaud | Of Applied Arts | fax: 705 472-7169 | And Technology | WWW: http://www.canadorec.on.ca Professor| |e-mail: Information | P.O. PGP key server

Email only users, and Bulk User Adds/Removes
Is there a way to establish an email only account? Also is there a way to add or remove a large amount of those accounts (if they can exist)? I'm setting up a system for student email, and have to add or remove 40+ accounts per semester. I'd like to limit the accounts to POP3 only, and prevent those users from accessing telnet etc. | Canadore College | Phone: 705 474-7600 X6439 Darren Renaud | Of Applied Arts | fax: 705 472-7169 | And Technology | WWW: http://www.canadorec.on.ca Professor| |e-mail: Information | P.O. Hardware Compatibilities
Before I mutate my Deb box again... can anyone tell me if a NEC 4 disk CD changer (IDE) will work under 1.3.1 (model # CDR-4300A)? Also whether an Intel EtherExpress 10/100 PCI card is supported. 1.3 Notebook installs
How do I get 1.3 on my notebook? The notebook is a follows: AST Ascentia 810N 488DX/2 66 8MB RAM 540MB HDD DSTN Color LCD 2 Type 2 PCMCIA slots Slot1: GVC (Cirrus Logic) 14.4 modem Slot2: SMC EliteCard 10T Ethernet Card Track ball (psaux detects it OK) 1 serial port (serial detects it OK) 1 parallel port (not detected) I've managed to get the base install completed off of diskettes, and the system boots fine. I've copied pcmcia-cs_2.9.5-3.deb and pcmcia-modules-2.0.29_2.9.5-2.deb to a floppy, and copied in turn to a dir on the notebook. I then did a dpkg -i --force-depends for both packages. All seemed to go well. On restart or even running pcmcia start I get the following errors and the modules do not load. (lsmod shows serial, and psaux only) ./pcmcia_core.o: unresolved symbol apm_unregister_callback_Rb7166c6e ./pcmcia_core.o: unresolved symbol apm_register_callback_R4e72ac41 probe returns the following: Intel PCIC probe: Cirrus CL-PD627x found, 2 sockets with -m returns: i82365 Also modconf can't seem to find the modules, even though the menu item is now there to pick from. my last resort my be to set up a slip connection to another deb box, and hook up a null modem cable (which I've never done either) Thanks Darren Renaud -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Mirror Site Size
I have been mirroring the FTP site for some time, to provide for quick local installs, and re configures. I've recently ran into a capacity problem. the drive that mirrors the FTP site is 690751 blocks, with used blocks at 667032, and 0 available. Is the 'stable, contrib, non-free' now that big? It seems that if it fits on one CD it should fit on that drive. I may have my exclude line in my mirror file botched, but it seems OK to me. Here's the line for dissecting: exclude_patt=(rex/|hamm/|unstable/|development/|experimental/|ms-dos(-i3 86)?/|source/|private/|debian-(bugs|lists)/|binary-(alpha|sparc|m68k)/|Incoming/ |WebPages/|local/|.mirrorinfo) Any suggestions for corrections or removal of items would be great. I have a 1.3 CD on order, but prefer to have the faster access, of the HD. | Canadore College Phone: 705 474-7600 X6439 Darren Renaud| Of Applied Arts fax: 705 472-7169 Professor | And Technologye-mail: Information | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Technology | P.O. Sound
I know this has probably been beat to death, but What happened to module sound support? It was there about a year ago, and I haven't had a need for it till recently, but now I can't seem to find it. Is there a quick method for getting support installed without buying a commercial driver. This is a standard 1.3 install, with an Acer S23 sound card. (it should be SB16 or at least SB Pro compatible) I've looked at the HOWTOs, and even attempted a kernel compile... no luck. | Canadore College Phone: 705 474-7600 X6439 Darren Renaud | Of Applied Arts fax: 705 472-7169 Professor | And Technologye-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Information | www: www.canadorec.on.ca Technology | P.O.
