Not parseable as a System.map?

2002-05-05 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I am getting the following error messages,

bash# ps
Warning: /boot/System.map-2.2.5-15 not parseable as a System.map
Warning: /boot/System.map not parseable as a System.map
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
...

when I run top or ps (the message also shows up at boot time). Can anyone tell
me what went wrong and do I fix it? Thanks!

Best wishes,
Chip

Hi,

On my machine,

bash$ file /boot/System.map-2.2.5-15
/boot/System.map-2.2.5-15: ASCII text

This problem came up after I had to restore my backup install to eradicate some
hacker's backdoor software.

One possibility might be that something went wrong when installing a
kernel. Installing the kernel again might solve it. You might want to
take notes of the actual steps you follow in order to install the
kernel so that if the problem will not get solved it will be easier
to find whether it was the problem and if it was, what was the
 offending operation.

How do I install lilo?

2001-10-11 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
HI,

I have a quick question. I have a new HD that I used to backup my linux
system to part of the drive (the drive also contains NT 4.0). After
duplicating the entire HD, I was thinking of making it bootable to linux.
Question: how do I install lilo now that the HD is not booting into
linux? Can I use Tom's boot disk and run lilo from there? How do I give
the command so that it correctly install lilo onto MBR? Thanks!

scp not connecting.

Hi,

I have a problem using scp. After installing rp-pppoe to activate my DSL

The following command will not get connected

ssh -l account host

but the following can

ssh -P -l account host

Ftp works, but I don't think it's a good idea to use ftp. The following
command did not get me anywhere

scp -pr [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/dir/file .

Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Re: What is Passive mode anyway?

So, may I ask a related question? I am trying to use ssh on a

SSH and ftp not working.

2001-03-08 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I recently installed RP-PPPoE and was able to get connected using my DSL
modem. However, I am having a problem. Netscape and telnet works fine,
but not ssh (ssh works if it's connecting to localhost, but not the
internet) and ftp (although ftp under netscape works fine). Can anyone
tell me what might cause this problem? Thanks!

I have a desktop at home that has RedHat 7.0 installed RedHat 6.0

other kernel image as

image=/chopin/boot/vmlinuz

I have no problem switching between rh6 and rh7, with no error messages.
I thought I should be able to get around this problem using the same
logic on this laptop HD, but I have been out of luck so far. Why is it
still complaining about a wrong System.map?

Using DSL connection.

2001-02-18 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to use Verizon DSL modem from Linux. I
have this modem connected to a 3Com ethernet hub, which connects to 3
machines. Verizon DSL has software for PC and Mac, and both work. Each
machine would get its own IP address. Not sure if this should be the
case, or Verizon just doesn't block a second (and beyond) machine to get
connected at the same time and get an additional IP address. In any
case, there is no software provided for Linux. I tried to set
up the network configuration the way I did on the PC, but obviously it
didn't work out. I was wondering if there is a way to use the DSL
connection, or I am stuck with a modem? Thanks!

 Have a look at
   info file utilities file permissions
 or do
   man chmod

(chmod 0600 /dev/hda7 [or whatever your swap partition is] should do the
 trick).

 Chip,

I don't know what's wrong, but a typical way to deal with this is to boot
using a generic rescue (install) diskette. (Win98 doesn't understand Linux
so whatever it may report is suspect.) A Debian install floppy has to work
whether your CD will boot or not.

When presented the main install menu don't follow the normal sequence, but
choose instead to mount your existing swap and ext2 partitions. The first
warning that proceeding may lose data on your disk can be ignored, but don't
choose to install Linux to a particular partition or then you will lose your
data there. Pick partition disk to proceed into cfdisk to check that things
are as you want there. You will probably want to quit cfdisk without any
changes. Mount your partitions. Then select from the install menu that you
want to make Linux bootable and follow the normal sequence for installing
LILO. With any luck you are on your way.

Total time to put things right is about five minutes, if you have a rescue
diskette. It may take longer if you have to create the diskette from the CD.
To do that you will need a machine that will boot to MS-DOS or Linux. Extra
difficulty if you must boot a win98 box into MS-DOS with no real mode CD-ROM
drivers. Copy the boot directory off the CD onto a FAT16 partition in
Windows first if you have to go that route.

 Cheers,

 Robin

  Hi,

  Here's what I have

  /dev/hda1 400+M ext2/opt

month ago.) But /etc/lilo.conf still has this windows information up
until yesterday, so I thought I'd modify it and try to add /dev/hdb
and see if that makes CDROM a bootable device.

After reboot, the first message displays reads

  120 MHz Pentium Processor
  External Cache: 256K Enabled
  Invalid partition table

I tried to boot from a rootless diskette (floppy module and CDROM module
share the same drive bay), and run lilo from there, but there an error
  message returning that said:

  install = /boot/boot.p
  image = /boot/vmlinuz

halted. I then pulled out the multibay carrier (to replace with another HDD),
but
apparently, there is something funny going on (even though it said the system
has
halted), the LCD display went crazy. Anyway, that must have been a grave
damage,
as now I can no longer boot the computer. From BIOS setup, I realize that all
HDDs
are not being recognized. Even floppy diskettes are not being read.

Can any one tell me what has happened? Is it possible to fix this problem? I
appreciate any help. Thanks!

Mounting CD-Rs that have multiple filesystems.

1999-07-11 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
OK, here is what I am trying to do. I have some CD-Rs that are burned
partially for two times: the first time an ISO9660 CD-R and the second
time Mac HFS. I tested them on Macs and PCs. They will only mount the
ISO9660 CD-R on most PC CD-ROMs, but not all. They will also mount the
ISO9660 CD-R on all Macs, but I can mount the Mac HFS portion on a Mac using
Toast. My question: how can I mount the ISO9660 CD-R on my linux box,
avoiding the complaint that it has multiple filesystems, or is it
possible? Thanks for any help!

Swapping between floppy and cd-rom module.

1999-06-19 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I have a minor problem swapping floppy and cd-rom module on my Compaq LTE
5200. I can only make either /dev/fd0 or /dev/hdb recognized, but not
both at the same time. Sometimes, it takes several boots for the
transition to take effect. That is, when I switch from one module to the
other, there is a period of time when neither is being recognized, and
then all of a sudden, after some boots, it is finally recognized. Can
someone tell me how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Re: Locale?

1999-06-10 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
I think I locate source of the problem of mine. I installed xcin crxvt
and had to add the following to .profile in root:

set convert-meta off
set output-meta on
stty pass8
stty cs8 -istrip
export LC_CTYPE=ISO-8859-1

Both are not working due to fonts problem, so what I do is to comment out
the last line (and no more complaint now) before I can figure out a way to
get xcin to work.

Repartition swap?

1999-06-06 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

Is there a way to repartition the swap space? I think I don't need that
much swap, and want to squeeze out some extra partition for filesystem.
The whole filesystem is on an extended partition (the primary partition
is a DOS system) and I did not create logical drives of it, so the whole
HD looks like hda1, hda2 (hda5=filesystem hda6=swap). I don't know if
I can do it from DOS, since fdisk will not tell hda5 from hda6). I
don't know if I can do it from Linux, since after I delete hda6, and
recreate a partition, I cannot seem to create two partitions on the same
space. Anyway, am I out of luck?

CD-ROM floppy swap problem.

Hi,

I was using a TEAC 4X IDE CD-ROM on a Compaq LTE 5200 notebook without
problem to mount it, until I decided to test if I can mount the floppy.
So, I swap the module, and found the floppy cannot be mounted. So, I

CD-ROM and floppy problem update.

1999-06-06 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Well, I don't know how and why, but I am now able to mount the floppy
module on the system. Strange thing is, I can only mount the Debian boot
disk as a msdos disk, although I have to mount a Redhat boot disk as ext2
disk. I also note, I can read, write and execute on my DOS partition,
just like another filesystem. Is this normal, or I am having some
problem with my system? But, again, my CD-ROM is not mountable at this
point. Am I stuck here?

guobiao16.pcf.gz
taipei16.pcf.gz

do it. Would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance!

PS/2 vs Serial mouse.

1999-06-05 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I have a question regarding using a Logitech cordless MouseMan Pro PS/2
mouse on a Compaq LTE 5200 notebook. Although it is a PS/2 mouse, I can
only hook it up to COM1 to get it to work in X. If I plug it into PS/2
port, the cursor won't move. I assume it's because ttyS0 is taken by
COM1 and not PS/2 port. Can anyone tell me if this is the case, and
which one is for PS/2, or will the mouse work as a PS/2 mouse? I am
using MouseMan as the mouse protocal. Thanks!

X windows manager?

1999-06-05 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I finally get an X server to run, but still seem to have a lot to work
out. It seems that I am assigned a windows manager (or none at all) that
is not so desirable. The xterminal in X has no title bar, so the window
cannot be dragged and moved. I tried to copy .xinitrc under the home
directory, and tried to assign fvwm95 as the windows manager, but it
didn't seem to work. Would appreciate any help.

Also, I am using an external monitor for a notebook. Every time I quit
from X windows, the monitor will blink every few seconds. Did I do
anything wrong to cause this?

Lastly, I seem to have a virtual desktop in X. Is there a way to change
the setting so that I can fit everything within the full screen? Thanks
in advance!

Re: X windows manager?

1999-06-05 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Thanks for your help. I am now using fvwm as the windows manager. I do
have some more questions.

1. Regarding the screen blink. It blinks every 2-3 secs (sometimes
longer), forever, unless I reboot. I am not sure if it's normally, since
I never have the same problem on other machines. I do notice that
there's an error message starting X (host unknown) as well as closing X
(don't know what it really mean).

2. Which file should I edit to let fvwm start xclock and xearth etc. for
me when X starts? Also, is there a way to add a scrollbar and to reverse
the background color of the xterminal by default, so that I don't have to
do it manually each time I open an xterminal?

Thanks!

Well, depending upon what system you are using: Here is how I have it in
 hamm.
 There is a file called window-managers , it's in /etc/X11
Install the desired wm and enter a path to it into that file.

That ought to take care of that.

Also, I am using an external monitor for a notebook. Every time I quit

No, it should be ok. Thats X shutting down.

You can turn the virtual desktop off in a number of ways:
 1. Run xf86config and turn it off there. When you get to modes section,
just change the order to what you want, and answer no to the question
whether you want virtual desktop or not.
 2. Edit XF86Config directly.
Scroll down to Display subsections and comment out the Virtual Dektop
 lines.

Netscape 3.

1999-05-22 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

Can anyone tell me where I can find Netscape 3? I remember older
versions of Netscape are stored in an archive, accessible via browsers,
but can't remember the URL now. Thanks!

Logitech cordless mouse user?

1999-05-21 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I was trying to use a Logitech TrackMan Live! on X windows, but cannot
seem to get it work so far. If there were success on this mouse, please
tell me what setting I should choose it get it work. If this mouse is
not yet supported, I'd like to know if other Logitech cordless mice had
any success at all (such as cordless MouseMan Pro). Thanks!

Cannot launch WordPerfect.

1999-05-21 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I am having a problem running WordPerfect for Linux. Specifically, it
says can't load library libXmp.so.4, which seems to be a symlink to
libXmp.so.10. Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Where is netscape?

1999-05-21 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi,

I installed netscape 4.5 base, communicator 4.5 base communicator
spellchecker (which requires the previous two installed). But now I
cannot find netscape. It seems that everything else is there but
netscape. Did I miss anything? I actually remove them and reinstall
them again; same thing.

Best wishes,
Chip

Re: Cannot launch WordPerfect.

1999-05-21 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
But I already installed it. To make sure I did not mess up anything, I
remove xlib6 and libc5 and reinstall them again; same result.

Cannot launch netscape

1999-05-21 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi all,

I downloaded and installed netscape binary, but when I tried to run it,
it said 'unknown command. I am positive that /usr/X11R6/bin is in the
path in .profile, but still, I tried /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape again. This
time it told me there is no such drectory or file, which is obviously not
true. I suspect my X windows has some problems. Since I cannot launch
WordPerfect either. Also, the prompt shows bash-2.01# instead of just
#. And, there is no bar around the x terminal for me to scroll or drag
around. I also tried to set fvwm95 as the windows manager, to no sucess
so far. Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Re: X server crash.

1999-05-07 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
My real problem is, I called CTX, which is the manufacturer of the
notebook, and they honestly told me they didn't know what they put in
their notebooks themselves. They even suggest that I open the notebook
to try my luck. Does any one know the probability of ruining the display
if I take this risk? Thanks!

Just like it says: you have no valid modes. Fortunately for you it's not
crashing, just exiting with an informative error message. :-) It could be
because you put in the wrong values for your card/monitor
(hsync/vsync/etc.) or it could be that you need to add some new modes.
Most likely the former. I'm not sure how laptops work here so maybe the
 debian-laptop people will know.

Unfortunately I can't tell you what values to use; it just depends on the
 card, etc.

You're using the 'generic' chipset driver, which means X isn't grokking
your hardware, which means even if you get this going it's gonna be pretty
slow and low quality. If you can find an appropriate card-specific driver,
it may well be able to figure out the hardware better and find a usable
 mode.

If you haven't tried using xf86config, give it a whirl; go through slowly
and answer all the questions accurately and it should work. (I missed the
start of the thread, so disregard if you already tried that...)

Mount floppy?

1999-05-06 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Hi all,

I have a newbie question. I was wondering if I can copy defrag onto my
boot disk, boot from there, unmount the HD, and do defrag. If this is
the case, how can I mount the floppy? Is it

mount -t ext2 /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

or

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

or anything else?

Thanks in advance!

Re: X server crash.

1999-05-06 Thread Fu-Dong Chiou
Thanks for the info. I did used xf86config, repeatedly, but didn't seem
to set up everything correctly. Here's what I think is crucial, but not
sure how to do it correctly:

1. hsync in kHz: I choose 31.5: standard VGA, 640x480 @ 60 Hz, as mine is
a 640x480 STN LCD capable of 256 colors (although the manual says it can
use external VGA monitor of three types (640x480, 31.5kHz; 900x600,
35.5kHz for 256 colors; 1024x768, 35.5kHz for 256 colors).

2. vertical sync range: here's the puzzle. I have no idea what to do. I
chose 50-70, 50-90, 50-100, none worked so far.

3. identifier for monitor definition: no clue what to do.

4. vendor name of monitor: CTX, I suppose.

5. model name of monitor: no clue what to do.

6. server: I choose XF86_VGA server.

7. VRAM: 1024K.

8. video card definition: no idea.

9. vendor name of video card: no idea.

10. model name of video card: no idea.

11. clockchip setting: I ran X -probeonly, and got 28.32 28.32 28.32
28.32

The results: no mode found. I am sure it's one or more of the settings
that is not set correctly. Would appreciate any help! Thanks!

No modes found means screen modes you specified are not valid for the
 particular video card+monitor combo.
Basically, what you want to do is change the order of modes (in
xf86config, when you get to modes screen), so that smallest modes come
 first.
I have more detailed procedure on my page, URL below.
