I've created a Minix and Swap partition and now I need to know how to boot so I can use those partitions I have made. also when activating the partition, how do write it: Activate swap partition: (1) or (/dev/hda1) any help on this? thanks alot in advance. CRC Checksum on Rescue boot
When using the rescue disk to install Debian from floppies I get a CRC error when it begins to decompress the kernel. I have put new memory in it, new hdd, and still the same error. It does use an older I/o card (it's a suped up 486, motherboard had no I/O channels) so could it be that the error is in the I/O card, or somewhere else? Any input would help. Thanks. Some ideas...
Just to ask a favor, I'm creating a End-user Linux site for people who just want to install Linux and run it like Windoze. We're not talking big time compile a kernel daily use, but everyday. I'd like to create it a-la-slashdot where people are the help engines. Basically a post answer situation. Most people don't know how to use mailing lists :) Just an idea so people aren't afraid of Linux each time someone yells RTFM at them, and they go to a certain other OS that is more widely supported. Right now I need general area ideas, and if anyone wants to contribute. Let me know.. Thanks... It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing... got plug and play?
When using isapnp with lspci it says it tries to find the directory /proc/bus/pci/... but cannot. when I then go in to make the directory, I get an operation not permitted error. It's nuts. Re: got plug and play? (more)
upon uninstalling lspci, the error did disappear, but I get this one instead: lspci not found, so PCI resource conflict not checked. I did look at the isapnp webpage on this error, and it says, well if this happens, it probably won't. Any more ideas? It's nuts. Any other way to install PnP devices? or is this an easy fix and it's just over my Linux-semi-newbie head? :) Wild guess... you'r running a 2.0.x kernel? lspci only works with the 2.1.x/2.2.x kernels. Just uninstall the pciutils package and that error will disappear. As for /proc/... - /proc is a virtual filesystem, not a physical one, which makes information from the kernel available. As such, you can't create new files or directories there (though you can write new values to a few of them in order to modify the kernel's behaviour). What you probably want to do in order to get your PnP devices configured is to run pnpdump (as root), in order to create a config-file for isapnp. Then you'll want to view/update it, in order to be sure that all the values are correct. Finally, start isapnp and watch the messages. to further the desktop discussion...
THAT is what is going to kill Linux ... forget the desktop, they need a consistant system interface to avoid the Unix problem. In a small sense Linux does have it's own standard. The linux kernel used by RH is in base form the same as Slink's. Also, if you can program and keep your wits about you, open your source files and lend one distribution to the other. With the open source policy I see it as a way for developers with any crazy scheme to get into the serious developing(that is without assembly), in fact, my school to teach computers and programming throws you in front of a Unix box. The best way to learn another language is to be immersed in it :) I was also proud to here that Dell is now packaging workstations with Linux by request. Everyone seems to be going to the open source policies (Mozilla.org, GNU(FSF), and now Apple OS X Server). As a developer I like it, and of course, will continue to contribute. You CAN target certain software at RH, or SuSE, or BSD but you can do exactly what debian, and other Linux flavors have done in the past (i.e. RPM's, KDE) is take source and apply it to yours. Just some thoughts...use the source Luke... Hoping everyone will speak C++ one day... Jayson Baird [EMAIL PROTECTED]
