Write protected mailbox, mutt

1999-11-09 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I did ask this a while ago but never got any real answers
so I will try again with some more information.

I am using fetchmail, exim, mutt to handle my mailing and
I have one .forward file to redirect all my debian list
mails to its own mailbox.
Lately I have been having problems that this mailbox is
write protected and I can not delete any mails.
I used to believe this was caused by exim locking the mailbox
because I could sometimes delete mails.
But now I use fetchmail like this:

slayer:# fetchmail -avK

So what I am asking is really how I can have write access to
my mailbox.

.
My .forward looks like this

# Exim filter
if $h_Resent-From: matches debian-user*
then seen save /home/jocke1s/Mail/debian-user
endif
if $h_From: matches Nvi
then seen save /dev/null
endif

It is located in my home dir

-rwxr-xr-x 1 jocke1s jocke1s 200 Sep 8 2001 .forward
.

My Mail dir looks like this:

drwxrwsr-x 4 jocke1s jocke1s 1024 Jun 21 05:24 Mail

and my mailbox like this:

-rw--- 1 jocke1s jocke1s 1290654 Jun 21 05:24 debian-user
That is how the file is created by the .forward file.

Kernel panic VFS ...

1999-10-22 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I did something stupid today :(
While recompiling my kernel to add scsi support for my cdrw I accidently
forgot some ide stuff and now I can't boot.

VFS: Cannot open root device 03.05
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

This has been discussed before on this list and I pretty much know
what I did to mess it up.

I have 2 debian partitions the one that works are on hda2 and the one
that messed up is on hda5.
I have some old vmlinuz + System.map in /boot

Could anyone guide me thru this so I can get my hda5 debian to boot again ?
Can I fix it from this (hda2) partition or do I have to use a rescue disc or
something and recompile or what ?

Hoping for some help!

garbled characters in vim

1999-09-22 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I am trying to get swedish characters to work properly on my debian box.
I have it working perfectly in rxvt and in vim (if I start it from
inside mutt, as now when I am composing this).

BUT!
If I start vim from an ordinary rxvt shell It displays escape sequences
å is \xe5
ä is \xe4
ö is \xf6
some other strange chars
´ is \xb4
¤ is \xa4
£ is \xa3

all other characters work. I hope the above is readable!

Also inside Mutt when I read mail all those chars are displayed as ? signs.
But if I cat the mail in /var/spool/mail/ it shows those chars correctly.

So might this be 2 separate problems or are they connected ?

I have been messing around with all sorts of things concerning language support
and I am a bit lost so If someone could set me on the correct path I would
be very grateful.

$: env
LANG=C
LESSCHARSET=latin1

$: cat .inputrc
set meta-flag on
set output-meta on
set convert-meta off

$: XF86Config

Section Keyboard

   XkbGeometry pc
EndSection

$: /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
setenv LANG C
setenv LC_CTYPE iso_8859_1

...

Hmm echo $LC_CTYPE isn't showing anything.

Thats what I can think of information vise. I also did som changes to locales
but I don't think anything really happened there. Tried to follow a red-hat
howto but couldn't find /usr/lib/kbd/keytables/ .

pr command

1999-09-19 Thread Jocke
Just a quick one.

I have some vague memory about a mail on this list a couple of weeks
ago about printing with margins(indentation) but I can't find it
again.

So my question is how to use pr (or some other text reformating
program) to add margins to my text output (for printing).

The pr -o command works nicely but when I print long lines the
text efter the linebreak will not be indented. Like this:

This is a very long line that will now be cut by the printer and print
on the
next line without being indented.

So did anyone solve this ? (with a text reformater, not a2ps)

Sorry to answer my own mail but here is one quick solution I hacked in gawk.

gawk '{
match($0,/$/)
if (RSTART=75){
printf(%5s%s\n, ,substr($0,1,75))
printf(%5s%s\n, ,substr($0,76))
}
else printf(%5s%s\n, ,$0)
}' $1 | pr -f

A solution without needing awk/gawk/perl etc would be nice.

ACARD scsi help

1999-09-14 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I installed a scsi card a week ago that I was told was a ADAPTEC 2904 card.
Well I couldn't get it to work and finally! *blush* checked the small paper
inside the plastic bag it came with and It is really an ACARD AEC-6710S

Ok I think and recompile (2.3.16) and adds acard lower level drive support.
Reboots and get the following message. (I have a HP 6200C scanner hooked to it)

aec6710x_detect:
ACARD AEC-671X PCI Ultra/W SCSI-3 Host Adapter: 0 IO:e400 IRQ:11.
ID: 0 HP C2270A 3828
ID: 7 Host Adapter
scsi0: ACARD AEC-6710/6712 PCI Ultra/W SCSI-3 Adapter Driver V1.0
scsi1: scsi host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi: 2 hosts.

-snip-

SCSI bus is being reset for host0 channel 0.

...
Now the booting hangs.

So can any scsi gurus help me here or should I just return the card and
try with another card (maybe an Adaptec that I had first in mind) ?

Or can I get this to work ?

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Recompiled 2.3.16

What now?!

No idea what to do next :(

Is there any newbie guide to using scsi or something similar to get
me started.

My boot message doesn't find any scsi devices at all
csi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hmm some more info. Did some changes and compiled Adaptec
as module instead.

Now my bootup finds 1 scsi host

scsi : 1 host.
scsi : detected total.

But I have no idea whatsoever what to do next.
my /proc/scsi/scsi file says Attached devices: none

find-scanner -v give a long list of

find-scanner: checking /dev/sg0... failed to open
find-scanner: checking /dev/sg1... failed to open

find-scanner: checking /dev/sgy... failed to open
find-scanner: checking /dev/sgz... failed to open
find-scanner: done

Loading aic7xxx.o with modprobe says
/lib/modules/2.3.16/scsi/aic7xxx.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

Could anyone help me out here ? Or give me some pointers to
what to read and in what order.
My goal is ofcourse to be able to scan.
xsane seems like a nice program when I try to start it it just
says xsane: no device available

xcdroast and audio

1999-08-29 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I can mount both my cdrom and my cdrw with data cds.
When trying to mount an audio cd I just get
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/scd0,
or too many mounted file systems

my fstab looks like
/dev/scd0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/scd1 /cdrw iso9660 noauto,ro,user,defaults0 0

I also can burn data cds without any problems but when I load an audio cd
I can burn a .cdr to disk but when I try to listen to it it just sound
strange (random noise and beebs and stuff).

Might this be a problem with my sound setup or did I do something wrong
with cdroast/mounting etc ?

I can play for example wav files. My gtcd doesn't find any cd when I try
to play one directly. Any ideas ?

Sound programs

1999-08-18 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

Just some small wonderings concerning sound configurations.

I have a Soundblaster Live that I can play .au files on
by piping (AS ROOT ONLY) $ cat sound.au /dev/audio
Been reading the Howtos and understand that I need some
more things installed. Is there a list of a basic
working sound package (mixers, cd-player, mp3 etc) for
debian. I am running WindowMaker and got hold of
wmcdplay, wmsoundserver, wmsoundprefs. If I try to
startr wmsoundserver I get segmentation fault and
wmcdplay says: unable to open cdrom device '/dev/cdrom'.
In addition to this I also have the following installed
xmms, playmidi, xmix, tracker, sox, tcd, sound-recorder.

So how should I proceed. Its all just a big mess at the
moment.
Running Debian unstable. 2.2.10 with emu10k1.o in
/lib/modules/2.2.10/misc
I can load it as root (do I have to do that ?)

Any suggestions on where I can find some more information
other than the 2 sound related HOWTOs would be much
appreciated.

You don't want to exec the commands, just enter:

 mutt
 rxvt
exec fvwm2 (or your preferred window manager)

You should also probably just put these in .xsession, as I believe
both .xinitrc and .xsession are run by startx, but other *only* run
 .xsession.

OK I am running xwm. Can that mess things up ?

I put my lines in .xsession and included
exec windowmaker
as the last line.

If I log in from xwm with no change as wm
I just bounce right back out to xwm login again.
And if I choose a wm in xwm my commands wont
be executed.

Any ideas ?

lpr indentation etc

1999-08-10 Thread Jocke
Hi again,

Some more printer troubles.

Been spending quite some time trying to get my printer
to work. Now I can print very nice post script files
using gs-aladdin *smile*

I dont know how to put it together with lpr though.
Anyone got any ideas ?

I have an EPSON Stylus Color 740 and currently tried
to set up apsfilter with epson as driver selection.
Doing this I get a printcap file but I can only get
raw to work on an ordinary text file. ?!!! Why ??

raw|lp5|epson-a4-raw|epson auto raw:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/epson-raw:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/epson-raw/log:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/epson-raw/acct:\
:if=/var/lib/apsfilter/filter/aps-epson-a4-raw:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:

All other entires in printcap file, for example

lp|lp4|epson-a4-auto-color|epson auto color:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/epson-a4-auto-color:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/epson-a4-auto-color/log:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/epson-a4-auto-color/acct:\
:if=/var/lib/apsfilter/filter/aps-epson-a4-auto-color:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:

just prints some error messages. Starting with

Unrecoverable error: rangecheck in .putdeviceprops
(1488)op_array(564)0 . etc etc

I suspect this is because epson is the wrong filter when
running the apsfilterconfig ?

Does anyone got a filter for the 740 color printer ? Or
where can I get one ?

more:
Since raw works and I can print .ps with gs command
I can live with it for a while but I could never imagine
it would be this hard to get a working printer.

Another example that someone might be able to help me with
is how I can get some indentation with the lpr -Praw fil.txt
command ? I have tried:
lpr -Praw -i 16
lpr -Praw -i16
lpr -Praw -p
putting :pr=pr -o 5 -t -j -f -e in the printcap file.
pr -o 5 -t -j -f -e fil.txt | lpr

but no indentation whatsoever *sigh*

-

I am using lprng and apsfilter
Been trying this for quite a while as I said and did find
some .upp filters on the net. Never got them to work very
well though.
hmm what else...
I tried magicfilter but I must have screwed something up since
no filters (that I can see anyway) are installed (/etc/magicfilter/*).

So if anyone feels like helping please :) do.
Anyone know of a resource like How to set up a nice simple
perfectly working printer environment for a single user home
debian linux machine please let me know.

Please ignore the whining tone at some places.

Looks good to me but!!!
when I reboot I get the following:

from xconsole:

kernel: Loaded 8488 symbols from /boot/System.map-2.2.10.

..
..

and in the console before X is started it complains about
can't locate module (or something similar)
for alot of modules.

and later when running for example pon I get
modprobe: can't locate module char-major-6

I have in /usr/src

printing again

1999-08-06 Thread Jocke
I am sorry to ask again but I am really stuck here.

If anyone has a working system with an
epson stylus color 740 printer I would be very
grateful for some help.

I would like something like 4 settings.

1: draft text mode
2: high quality text
3: draft pictures
4: high quality pictures

I really hate asking for help but I can't really
get it to work and a working printer is pretty
high on my list.

lprng
gs-aladdin

apsfilter or magicfilter ?

I did find some .upp files from Installing the Epson stylus
color 740 under Redhat Linuc 5.2/6.0 web page.

But the page really describe setting it up using RH printtool
and rhs-printfilters package so I am not sure how to convert
this to debian.

I guess that the 3 .upp files (720x720 plain paper, 1440x720dpi Inktjet Paper
and 360x360dpi Plain Paper) should be put somewhere in the ghostscript
dir ?

I guess that printing problems are a quite common newbie thing (at least
if you count the number of help! posts on the net) and I am wondering If
I might not have missed something? Is there a Debian printguide somwhere ?

Any help would be appreciated

printer help

1999-08-04 Thread Jocke
Hi all,

I can't get lpr to work properly. I guess I am just
unexperienced so some hints and advice would be
appreciated.

I have a pretty slim potato setup.
gs-aladdin
lprng
magicfilter
-
printcap file:
lp|epson|EPSON STYLUS color 740:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/epson:\
:sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\
:if=/etc/magicfilter/stylus_color_720dpi-filter:\
:af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

printer EPSON STYLUS color 740

when trying to print a .ps file with
lpr some_file.ps I just get lots of form feeds and strange
output after a while

when trying a ordinary text file nothing happens.
The job is in the que for a while but nothing prints.

As root I can print with cat some_file /dev/lp0

-
If I do lpc start I get
Printer: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: started

What extra info can I give ?

Would appreciate som input on this.
