Tjena,

Just nu så vet vi inte - vi har en call-for-papers ute - men tar gärna
emot andra förslag. Vi hade exempelvis ett Debian bug-squashing-party
som var populärt innan pandemin.

Hi Klaus,

thank you but dist-upgrade had the same result.

'~# rm -R /var/lib/apt/lists/*; apt update; apt upgrade' worked.

Still don't know what was wrong...

Thank you very much!

Btw:

Question about changed logout behavior.

2019-01-21 Thread Johan T-Katiska

Hi there, since starting using testing a month or so ago my xsession
behavior (I pressume) seem to have changed. I get logged out
automatically after exiting 'X'. I actually read that one person
experienced the same thing about a week ago. Debian user, used testing
and within the same time-frame as me.

I can't remember where but first-hand guesses: reddit, stackoverflow or
something like it. I've looked for it again, but can't find it. Sorry.

I'm not really sure where to go next and I'm I suspect that it's an
intentional change in some package. I guess next in line would be that I
need to configure something and lastly a bug. I still have no idea what
package is involved however.

I've scraped the bottom of the barrel regarding search engines,
conf-files, etc. I've guessed and read any leads I could find. Initial
culprits I suspected: xsession, bash as login shell, systemd-logind and
my login scripts. I stopped when I reached threads and the like over a
decade old.

My scripts are basic and I don't do anything fancy. See bottom for an
edited outline of my '.xinitrc' file. My dot-files sets system editor
and a few basic standard things. 'shopt' rules. Right from the
documentation.

I use 'dwm', my routine is to start 'X', from the command-line after
login with the supplied 'startx' script. I don't use any scripts to
start 'X' automatically and the reason is that I tend to do a little
manual housekeeping at logout. Sometimes before I start 'X'. Definitely
if I'm troubleshooting. Sometimes I want to start 'X' briefly and
logout again. So I want the previous behaviour.

The 'unclutter'-part refers to this, not the repo one:
https://github.com/Airblader/unclutter-xfixes.

My scripts contain program options, output redirections and things that
would clutter '.xinitrc'. If they don't execute they fork to the
background or get killed off. Basic stuff. Nothing that deals with the
'xsession' itself that I can deduce by myself.

```
/* Display settings */
xrdb ~/.Xresources
xset r rate 350 40
slstatus &
~/.fehbg &
nm-applet &
/* Needed to do automatic backups, also stopped working btw */
/usr/lib/deja-dup/deja-dup-monitor &
numlockx &
~/uptime.sh
~/touchpad-conf &
/* One thing I think might be related to session itself, starts
redshift at night if conditions are met */
~/redshift.sh
/* 'unclutter' maaay be be dealing with the session in some way */
unclutter -b --timeout=6 --jitter=350 --ignore-scrolling
gtk problem after update
Hi
After an update of debian testing several days ago some applications crash.
Its clearly a gtk error.
for example mousepad:
(mousepad:4203): Gtk-WARNING **: 10:33:25.001: Could not load a pixbuf from
This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be
found.
/home/jods/.local/share/icons/Papirus-Dark/16x16/actions/image-missing.svg:
I googled reinstalled some applications, tried some stuff but nothing seems
to work.
Anybody an idea?
thanks
Until there is no more space. I used ncdu. And also did
ls and finds for big files and/or directories . But I can not find a file
Who changed
2017-01-03 Thread Johan DS
Hi
I use the who command in my .zlogin for counting how many times I'm logged
in.
who | awk '$1 == "'$USER'"' | wc -l
previously the output was something like
user tty1
user pts/2
so user was 2 times logged in
However the who output seems to be changed in:
NAME   LINE TIME IDLE  PID COMMENT  EXIT
   system boot  2017-01-03 15:56
user - tty1 2017-01-03 15:58 01:521067
   run-level 5  2017-01-03 15:59
   pts/22017-01-03 17:22 14868 id=ts/2  term=0
exit=0
Does anybody knows an alternative so I can count my loggins again
Thanks
Sedan ska man ju inte glömma att Android är Linux. Det handlar väl mest om
[OT] Skänkes SUN E450
2013-12-28 Thread Johan Björklund
Hejsan,
ursäkta spammande, men jag hoppas någon entusiast är intresserad av en
gammal SUN-server.
Det är en Sun Enterprise E450 som önskar få ett nytt hem. Servern är 10+ år
och var i gång till november, men har mest blåst varmluft de senaste åren.
Körde Debian så klart.
Specifikation:
CPU: 4x SunSPARC IIe @ 450 MHz
RAM: 4GB
HDD: 4 st interna. iaf två är 72GB SCSI2. Finns gott om plats för
ytterligare diskar om man hittar ett bakplan.
Därtill en fullbestyckad Sun D1000 extern disklåda med, vad som verkar,
36GB Ultra160-diskar (har inte varit inkopplad på länge).
Medföljer en konsollkabel så man kan komma åt servern på serieporten
(9600,8,N,1), men en USB-seriell behövs.
Allt som allt väger detta runt 100kg och enda villkoret för att få allt
detta till skänks är att du kommer och hämtar och bär ut detta från min
lägenhet i Årsta, Stockholm. Jag bor på 1:a våningen så det är inte många
trapport att forcera, däremot en liten bit att bära fram till lastplats.
Om du fixar bärhjälpen men har problem med transport kan jag vara
behjälplig att transportera det hela inom Storstockholm.
Med hopp om att slippa köra denna server till skroten.
Johan Björklund
Hi,
Is there a preferred way to install Debian 7
from DVD to an external (USB) hard disk ?
Euh... just install it on that disk? ;-)
The whole external hard disk is to be used instead of the internal hard disk.
Ok, no problem.
This is to  experiment with the new release (and discover fish hooks like
graphics that don't work) while leaving the internal hard disk with the
production Debian 6 on it completely alone.
Sensible.
One then boots from either the external hard disk or the internal hard disk.
Yes and no, but read on.
To set this up, at what stage in the install process does one actually put the
new release on to the external disk ?
When it asks which disk to set it up to and whether you want to do the
partitioning yourself (manual) or guided.
Does one need to also tell the install program where to put grub ?
or does it do that automatically ?
You just stated above you have a production version of Debian on the internal
disk, so it has Grub already. The new installation on the external disk just
needs to be added to the existing Grub config. The installer should do that for
you.
Is there any other special configuration one needs to do to properly
put the new release on to the external hard disk ?
Not that I know of.
It is vastly preferable not to unplug the internal hard disk or otherwise
disrupt the functioning system.
No, the installer needs to access the Grub config on that disk. Unplugging it
would also change the name of the disks (sda, sdb, etc) and might interfere
with the installation or later on with running it, although it should not when
using the default disk labels.
Of course the internal hard disk will be backed up before the attempted install
...
Yes, please do so. ;-)
Good day,
Here is a script that I use to migrate from debian to any other OS.
But modify it to suit your circumstances.
Been doing it for years.
By just changing you can do the reverse.
From thunderbird to thunderbird is the same just change the hidden file
names for the systems.
After the transfer when you first time start thunderbird it will check
your additions etc.
rsync -av  /media/johan/trans-3/sam-all/home-all/.icedove/
/home/johan/.thunderbird/
I play around with about five different OS'ses and do this from my
master OS.
Like firefox, gnucash, all other files I would like to transfer.
Do this with scripts.
I use 3.7, installed from experimental, and it works well for me. I am
I considered installing 3.8 from experimental, but that one seems to
http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch08.html#idp0176
I _think_ you _might_ want to try booting to a live-cd, and run
something like
VBoxManage convertfromraw /dev/sda/ vboximage.vdi
Then try to boot the vboximage.vdi disk in vbox.
When I used it, I did roughly:
dd if=/dev/sda of=diskimage.dd
VBoxManage convertfromraw diskimage.dd vboximage.vdi
I have only tried it once, but it worked much better than I had expected
(yes, I was more pessimistic than I should have been).
From https://wiki.debian.org/skype:
First, you will have to enable Multi-Arch:
# dpkg --add-architecture i386
# apt-get update
Then, download the i386 package as above and install:
# wget -O skype-install.deb http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-deb
# dpkg -i skype-install.deb
If you then proceed with
# apt-get -f install
quite a few i386 packages will be installed.
With priority up to 100, the packages from experimental will not be
As packages from experimental are experimental and may break your system
But that is the i386 version of course and I never managed to get out of
that hole trying to install it.
I also tried and failed installing lsb-core:i386. lsb-core depends on a
bunch of packages providing binaries, like python and make, and, as far
as I know, multiarch does not allow co-installation of binaries, but
only libraries.
My conclusion would be that you would need python and python:i386 at the
other i386 packages.
Short answer: You cant. You had the same things installed before, and
they were just hidden inside of ia32-libs.
Acroread is now a multiarch-package, as it says on the deb-multimedia
website, and the amd64 package for acroread is gone. The point of
multiarch is to allow installation of the 32-bit package belonging to
the i386 arch and using that acroread on your amd64 system.
The i386 package of acroread has dependencies on lots of other i386
libraries. Previously the 32-bit acroread was packaged in an amd64
package with dependency on ia32-libs. ia32-libs was a very large package
containing all of the 32-bit libraries that acroread depended on.
In the new world you can remove the large and unmaintanable ia32-libs
and instead install well-maintained packages from i386.
Hope that is clear enough.
Did you ensure that the line starting with GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in
/etc/default/grub reads
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet
and put a # at the beginning of the GRUB_GFXMODE line
then run update-grub2 again (as root or using sudo)?
Did you remove the line uvesafb mode_option=1400x1050-24 mtrr=3
scroll=ywrap (or similar) from /etc/initramfs-tool/modules
then run update-initramfs -u (as root or using sudo) again?
(I had a typo in the first mail, and I may have one again, but the above
should describe undoing the edits from the guide.)
I would have expected that your installation would boot normally again
after that.
Good! Now you know exactly what edits to what config files that you need
I reboot after it and start with a previous kernel version number -
the number ends with 486, not 686 - with Rescue Mode. It started and
after Ctrl+D - when it needs - it booted the gui succesfully and
everything worked well.
So it sounds to me like there is no problem with your system as a whole,
just the boot config for the 686 kernel.
I would like to start the computer with the newest available kernel
version number, what ends with 686, and what were the default when I
started the system before, but it doesn't work and give me the error
screen what I mentioned before.
Please give me help to repair this to boot the computer normally as
before it was happenned.
I would:
Start the system the way you can, via rescue mode.
Undo the edits you made before. It might be enough to replace
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset
video=uvesafb:mode_option=1400x1050-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap
by
CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet
Run the same update-initramfs and update-grub commands as you did when
following the guide.
Hope it helps
If you have a recent CPU/GPU from intel, you might want to search for
ivy bridge linux random freeze and see if that can describe your
The 3.5 kernel works much better for me.
When I looked at the links for the standard install CDs, though, I see
That seems to be the simplest solution, if you have a working monitor.
So you have a working computer, but without monitor, and you want to
know its IP-address? I assume your laptop is connected to the same
router as the monitorless computer.
I would have two suggestions.
1) Log into the router, and see what IP-addresses have been given out
recently, and try connecting to them.
2) Install zenmap on the laptop, find the IP-address range the router
uses (mine uses 10.0.1.*, most I have used use 192.168.0.* or
192.168.1.*). Run a quick scan with zenmap on that range of
IP-addresses, and see which ones have an ssh-port open.
Then try to connect to those.
printer driver Samsung SCX4623f
2012-05-15 Thread Johan Scheepers
 Good day,
Got  a Samsung SCX 4623f printer.
It seems that Debian 6.05 does not have a driver for it.
Debian 7 testing, ubuntu 12.04, linux mint 2012.04, installs it
automatically.
What would be the way to install it.
1) Samsung unified driver ?.
2) Something from the repo' s?
Thanks
 I would be glad to help in terms of testing.
 Thanks a lot for your help.
However, I think that this prove that the non-proprietary ATI driver
I am always a bot surprised by advice like the ones in this thread. I
I am aware that for web-browsing, and other similar activities, using
I typically run programs and scripts without having a good estimate of
RAM-bound, so I try to guess how much I can do within the memory I have
It is not uncommon for me to misjudge the need by a factor of 2 or 3,
and in those cases, I have programs being killed left and right unless I
have enough swap-space.
I would say that being careful with swap-space is important when one has
too small a hard drive, but I have plenty of drives space these days.
Not having my jobs killed is more important to me than saving a few tens
I have just above 40 GB on my current desktop, and when I had influence
over a computer with 64GB RAM, it had quite a bit of swap space.
This is the message I get.
I am inside a corporate LAN with a proxy server whose address is ns14:8080.
Cannot write to `fp10.sha512.amd64.pgp.asc' (Permission denied).
As Curt wrote, it seems that you can not write the output file.
To verify that it is not network related:
wget
http://people.debian.org/~bartm/flashplugin-nonfree/fp10.sha512.amd64.pgp.asc;
tries tio fetch and write to file, which does not work, as you tried before.
wget
http://people.debian.org/~bartm/flashplugin-nonfree/fp10.sha512.amd64.pgp.asc
-O - will try to fetch the file and print it to standard output, so
that you see it on screen. I expect that to work without problems.
Is this a special setup with special write permissions?
My interpretation is that the installation scripts fails to write a file
that it wants to save to disc for later use.
What is the standard best way of setting this new window manager as yours?
It certainly won't exist in any of the lists on the login page, since
debian could not know about it.
So, i googled around, and there's this page
 http://www-rohan.sdsu.edu/doc/debian/ch-X.html
which recommends just making an executable file
 /home/USER/.xsession
and putting in a sequence of commands there---which
could just be the path to your window manager.
I tried this, and . . . . it works.
But i feel a little uneasy about this, like this is not a best practice,
or some newer release of debian may break it.
My internet suggests to look in the /usr/share/xsessions folder, and
create a new file there. The files there appear to be .desktop files,
whose format should be defined be the internet somewhere (a
freedesktop.org-related format, I believe).
I have not tested this.
I think gnome uses its own configuration system rather than debian's.
I think it goes something like this:
Open gconf-editor (install it if it is not already installed). Find the
correct place to edit (I do not have a gnome2 installation here). It may
be desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager, as
suggested by the internet.
You could search for required_components and I think you should find
the right place.
You should see that windowmanager is set to metacity. Change it to
whatever you like (wmaker, I guess).
At least that procedure worked for me when I switched form metacity to
compiz. There is also the command line way. As I have never used it I
will not propose it, but the internet hints at gconftool-2 -s
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager xmonad --type
Finding upgradable packages by priority
Hi,
I run testing and after 5 days without upgrading, I have around 100
upgradable packages. Normally, I upgrade when reaching the (arbitrarily
chosen) number 100, but I would like to have a better way of deciding
when I want to upgrade something.
What I would like to have is a way of finding upgradable packages where
the upgrade has a priority that is medium or high priority. The
intention is to make it easier for me to find out what important
upgrades are available, and decide based on that if when I want to upgrade.
I assume this kind of search would require downloading the changelog for
each upgradable package, and looking at all entries that are more recent
than the installed version, then returning a match to the search if any
of those versions are marked priority=meduim or above.
Does anyone know of a way to accomplish what I want in an automated fashion?
I would recommend debian testing, wheezy (to become debian 7), even
It might require more knowledge, but if your aim is defined as playing
Too tecnical for me
Yup, it also works here (wheezy). But IIRC, bootlogd fails at a random
Debian Bug report logs - #564149 mailto:564...@bugs.debian.org on
squeeze.
Seem to be not working in wheezy too
Works in Wheezy.
I thought it was too until I did
wtopa@dj:~$ ls -l /var/log/boot*
-rw-r- 1 root adm 6.9K Jan 12 13:07 /var/log/boot
-rw-r- 1 root adm 6.8K Jan 12 10:50 /var/log/boot.0
-rw-r- 1 root adm 2.0K Jan 10 14:39 /var/log/boot.3.gz
-rw-r- 1 root adm 2.0K Jan 10 13:35 /var/log/boot.4.gz
wtopa@dj:~$ cat /etc/default/bootlogd
# Run bootlogd at startup ?
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes
I am seeing the same on sid! ??
wtopa@dj:~$ cat /media/sid/etc/default/bootlogd.dpkg-old
# Run bootlogd at startup ?
BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes
UPDATE
Fount the problem.  Even though dpkg -l bootlogd said it was installed.
some how back in January the bootlogd executable had been removed.
Aptitude was able to purge/install the package and the log is now
working in wheezy
The Sid is somewhat different.  I moved the weird bootlogd.dpkg-old to
bootlogd and restarted that service and it is now working.  I think(?)
the problem(s) occurred during the upgrade to bootlogd version
2.88dsf-22, which broke initscripts and sysvinit-utils.  Anyway a
reinstall on sid fixed it.
Wayne
Wheezy. I installed bootlogd and now there is information in /var/log/boot.
But nothing about the firmware failure/missing.
Thats is the info I am looking for.
More suggestions please.
Thanks
Johan S
hi,
I tryed the testing cd (20 feb).
When I look at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/, I see
only netinstall CDs, and if you used one of those, it would not contain
a GUI on the CD. When installing with a network connection, it should
have installed (offered to install with default answer yes) a (gnome)
desktop.
I think you can get the standard gui installation by running tasksel
--new-install in your installed system. It should show you a selection
of categories, and you can choose which to install software for.
I hope that for the final release, we  get the GUI (gnome) in the first cd.
I definitely expect you will.
Have you been disappointed by the 1.8 version as well?
Not sure - my current installation is Squeeze, and I have 1.6.4. My
previous install was Sid, and I probably had 1.8 on it before I stopped
using that machine.
1.8 is not yet in debian, sid still has 1.6.5.
In any event, I'm currently pretty happy with
Liferea (1.6.x), although it's kind of sluggish (perceptible lag when
moving to new item / feed, very slow startup, serious application
unresponsiveness while updating all feeds).
My opinions exactly, but I am looking forward to 1.8, when it enters the
debian archive.
I, too, shared the OP's
frustration with the dearth of good, fast GUI RSS readers; I use
liferea, but its performance is disappointing.
Have you been disappointed by the 1.8 version as well?
I have not tried it, but from what I understand it was written with this
problem in mind.
From the liferea blog:
When you upgrade to 1.8 you might be searching for new features and be
a bit disappointed. The thing is that we put our development focus into
performance improvements and removing bottlenecks
From a comment in the corresponding debian bug (#651913):
After testing the new version, I can confirm it is faster and more
responsive than the previous one (1.6). The upgrade also seems to go
smoothly.
(I guess from the above description that you are using gnome as your
I have been refused adding a printer, and the reason was that I was not
Apart from that I have no advice, other than that if you describe what
Also, I have (sometimes) had more luck using the webinterface, which you
I mean linux as opposed to debian/kFreeBSD. It seems that freebsd is the
reason it has not migrated to testing yet. See
