How can I use pulse as as user on a headless server?

2015-05-01 Thread Klaus Pieper

Hi gurus,

I have a dac attached to a debian server running mpd and output the
sound from the desktop machine to pulseaudio on the server. This works
if I start pulseaudio -D --system which is considered to be a bad
idea. Another disadvantage is that mpd does not work connected to alsa
directly, only through pulse. With wheezy I started pulse with the init
script and everything was fine, I could play mpd via alsa if no other
application was connected to pa. With jessie there is not init script
supplied any more.

How can I autospawn pulse on the remote machine without X? Is there
another solution besides PA?

Thanks,
Klaus

Crackling sound from usb sound device

2013-03-23 Thread Klaus Pieper

Hi,

I have been using an external dac over usb for some months. Since about
two weeks sometimes sound is distorted (irregualar crackles, which
usually diappear after closing and reopening the application, i.e. mpd,
xine, rhythmbox or a stream from firefox, some times).

I am under the impression that this happens since a kernel upgrade a
week ago.

The message cannot get freq at ep 0x1 appeared in the logs before.
Where does it come from and what does it mean?

Any ideas?

Thanks
Klaus

The video device is the builtin camera of the Thinkpad.
I unplugged the USB CD and got the same behaviour (reboot, while mpd is
playing, get the crackle after reboot).

No hardware changes whatsoever in the last weeks.

Re: Recover broken SDHC card

2012-09-07 Thread Klaus Pieper

Is it really broken? Have you mounted the SD card on another computer or
on a Windows system (just in case...)?
Tried the camera and three computers with linux, xp and win7. Linux
seems to recognize the device (/dev/sdb on this machine), so does xp
(there is a drive e:), but it can't be accessed.

You can try with the usual recovery tools (Photorec and/or TestDisk¹) but
the success will depend on the level of damage on the card.

If nothing helps, you can test with the tools provided by the card's
manufacturer (usually for Windows) but that's better than nothing ;-(

¹http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Tried photorec and the tool provided by sandisk, but both can't access
the drive.

Yes. Before multiarch, you had to install the 32 bit Canon packages with
--force architecture (this is what the Ubuntu guy does in his script).

With multiarch, dependencies are resolved properly for the 32 bit branch
after adding the i386 architecture and the Canon scripts (for both the
cnijfilter-mx870series and scangearmp packages) work without any
modification on amd64.

Printer and scanner work fine, scanning with the Canon app.

The scanner now is supported by sane (which was not the case with
stable), there seems to be a problem with the ADF however in xsane and
simple-scan (both hanging).

With LVM you could put anything on logical partitions which can be
created/increased/decreased/dropped as necessary.

You need a small separate boot partition, which can be shared between
both systems.

You might want to create a swap partition, which also is shared, maybe a
  separate partition for /tmp.

hda2 linux 200M /boot
hda3 lvm rest

/dev/vol.group/lenny1
/dev/vol.group/lenny2
/dev/vol.group/swap !!
/dev/vol.group/tmp

etc.

Yours,
Klaus

Can't remove LVM swap device

2009-06-27 Thread Klaus Pieper

Hi,

I have to replace a disk that contains a lvm volume group with a logical
partition previously used as swap device (dev/vg01/swap).

I replaced the swap partition with another one, changed /etc/fstab and
removed the uswsusp package since I noticed that there was an entry for
/dev/vg01/swap in uswsusp.conf.

Still I can't remove the old lvm swap partition. Seems, someone is still
sitting on the old swap device, but I can't find out, who.

groucho:~# lvremove -f /dev/vg01/swap
Can't remove open logical volume swap

groucho:~# grep swap /etc/fstab

groucho:~# cat /proc/swaps

/dev/mapper/vg00-swap partition 2097144 179624 -1

pcnet32; modprobe vmxnet; ifup eth0; ifup eth1; bzw. ifconfig dev ip).

# Start the virtual ethernet kernel service

Re: SID: Netzwerkkarte fehlt.

2006-10-01 Thread Klaus Pieper

etch:~# ifconfig eth1 192.168.16.2
etch:~# ifconfig
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:51:6A:BC
  inet addr:192.168.16.2 Bcast:192.168.16.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
  Interrupt:185 Base address:0x1480

Das 1. Device läßt sich dann auch manuell starten:

etch:~# ifconfig eth1 192.168.16.2
etch:~# ifconfig
eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:29:51:6A:BC
  inet addr:192.168.16.2 Bcast:192.168.16.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
  Interrupt:185 Base address:0x1480

SYNOPSIS
   grub-install [OPTION] install_device

   --root-directory=DIR
install GRUB images under the directory DIR instead of
the root

grub-install copies GRUB images into the DIR/boot directory specfied by
--root-directory, and uses the grub shell to install grub into
the boot

   sector.

Alternative wäre dann irgendwie

mount /dev/soundso /mnt
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/hda

Re: LVM - dead disk

2006-04-01 Thread Klaus Pieper

Hi Chris,

So - I thought I'd try to chroot in from a CD live disk - knoppix was
what I had lying around (4.0) - but that doesn't have lvm or has an lvm
version difference.

The dm_mod kernel module is there, but not the lvm utilities. So, you
simply install it.

modprobe dm_mod

apt-get update
apt-get install lvm2

However, the soft links for the lvm commands are not available, so you
create them.

cd /sbin; ln -s lvmiopversion vgscan; vgscan
etc ..

As an alternative, you could use a debian install cd.

If you're after making experiments with lvm a safer way would be to do
it under vmware. You might want to check out the vmware server beta, but
that's another story, of course.

K.

Some time next week - I'll be sticking three new 250Gb disks into it
and reinstalling from scratch - but - I'd like to attempt to get the
data off if at all possible. Each time something goes wrong you learn a
bit - you know ? :)

So - is there a live cd out there (or an install set or similar) that
will boot far enough to allow me to chroot in and then load the virtual
group? Or is there a better way?

Re: VPN mit sarge Citrix

2006-02-27 Thread Klaus Pieper

Hi Stoebi,

Was macht man in so 'nem Fall?

Watchguard Firebox SSL, with Citrix Secure Access).

Soweit ich begriffen habe, ist vpnc das Standard-Opensource-Produkt für
IPSec.

Was sagt ip addr ???

Welche meinst Du?

net6vpn --status sagt
Connected to ip-adresse as mein user ..

Merci, K.

This may not be your only problem, but it probably is one of them.
You're trying to *read* from your memory stick here, not write to it. If
you want to blank the memory stick, you need to use the prior command:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb

Andrew,

Just wanted to backup the mbr before overwriting it.
dd of=/dev/sdb gives the same error message.

I have another stick which works, so it's not an issue with my setup.

Is there any chance to use the thing again? She does not need the data.

Hda1 is WindozeXP; the rest is Debian Sarge (ext3)

I suppose you have debian on /dev/hda7 and want to use hda6 for backup.
Did you format /dev/hda6 (mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda6)?
What does mount /dev/hda6 /mnt say?

/dev/hda2 is an extended partition, it does not contain a file system,
thus cannot be mounted.

Re: USB stick broken?

Look in log files for what system messages when you plugged in the memory. One
of
them may tell you what device ID the system assigned to the memory. On my
machine

usb-storage: device found at 8
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Vendor: Generic Model: USB Flash DiskRev: 7.78
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Attached scsi removable disk sdb at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi generic sg1 at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0
usb-storage: device scan complete

Also, you can quickly check if memory is bad by plugging it into a friend's Mac
or Windoze computer. If it work there, it will work in Debian, after some setup.

It's definitely not a linux/debian issue, since this stick did not work
in Windoze and another one works on this system.

No X with home brewed Xen kernel

2005-12-17 Thread Klaus Pieper

I can't get X up on a etch system configured for Xen 3.0.
It works with debian's standard 2.6.12-1-k7, with 2.6.12.6 compiled from
the xen sources X hangs on startup, I get a black screen and nothing
happens, can't switch back to the console, can do a soft reboot with
ctrl-alt-del, however.

Matrox G200 video adapter.

Got the same problem with the Xen demo cd.

Any hints will be appreciated.

Install Source Packages

1999-07-19 Thread Klaus Pieper
Hi,

How can I install a tar package and replace a debian package. I would
like to install perl 5.005_03. I tried to remove the old one with
dselect and all the web packages were gone.
So, is there any chance either to remove the old perl stuff and keep the
dependent packages or can I build a deb package from the tar file?

Klaus

File Attributes in /var

1999-07-04 Thread Klaus Pieper
Hi,

After moving the /var directory to another partition using tar cfSp - *
| ( cd /mnt tar xfSpv - ) I got problems because exim could not write
to /var/spool/exim and /var/log/exim.

How are the correct settings?
I changed them to
drwxrwx--- 5 root mail 1024 Jun 24 06:27 /var/spool/exim/
drwxrwx--- 2 root mail 1024 Jul 4 06:47 /var/log/exim/

What's wrong with the tar copy command? I never had any problem with it.

 Hi,

If I get this right you are saying that even though you have a route to the
IBM network the ISDN line to your ISP is coming up when you make a connection
to the IBM network. My guess would be that the client program you are using
is using DNS to connect the IBM host. If you are trying to connect to a
place via a name then DNS will be called: you can put the host you want in
your /etc/hosts file and alter /etc/resolv.conf so that it checks hosts
before the resolver will stop this.

As for the DNS calls it has to be something on your network that is trying to
get out. I'm guessing you might have looked for things. The only thing I
can think of is if the IBM network calls you, if you have tcp_wrappers
running and PARANOID in I think it will do a reverse on the incoming IP
address to try and stop spoofing.

ip-up with 2nd isdn interface

1999-06-25 Thread Klaus Pieper
Hi,

I user two syncppp isdn interfaces ippp0 and ippp1 for dialin at the ISP
(ippp0) and my office (ippp1) respectively.
The first one works fine.
When I ping the ip address for ippp1 dialing works, but the
/etc/ppp/ip-up script is not executed so there is no network setup with
the new IP addresses and ping does't work.

I traces the ip-up script which calls run-parts to execute the scripts
in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d.
I configured the network in isdnutils and can see that isdnutils is
executed for ippp0, but not for ippp1.

Where is the call to the ip-up script?

don't use diald. The isdn subsystem can do the autodialing for you. read the

Network setup

1999-06-20 Thread Klaus Pieper
I have problems setting up my network with isdn, sync ppp, diald.
Debian is 2.1, kernel 2.2.5.

The first time I try to connect to the internet diald does not call;
after isdnctrl dial ippp0 anything is ok, diald redials if the connection
was interrupted because of timeouts.

I suspect problems with the initial routing setup.
I set up ppp with pppconfig; on startup I get error messages from the
route commands in /etc/init.d/network and /etc/device.ippp0 (the route
add -host command fails: Operation not supported by device).

The init scripts generate an ippp0 and a sl0 slip interface (??), both
are set as default gw.
I tried ifconfig sl0 down, but the same as before.

TIA
Klaus
