How can I use pulse as as user on a headless server?
Hi gurus, I have a dac attached to a debian server running mpd and output the sound from the desktop machine to pulseaudio on the server. This works if I start pulseaudio -D --system which is considered to be a bad idea. Another disadvantage is that mpd does not work connected to alsa directly, only through pulse. With wheezy I started pulse with the init script and everything was fine, I could play mpd via alsa if no other application was connected to pa. With jessie there is not init script supplied any more. How can I autospawn pulse on the remote machine without X? Is there another solution besides PA? Crackling sound from usb sound device
Hi, I have been using an external dac over usb for some months. Since about two weeks sometimes sound is distorted (irregualar crackles, which usually diappear after closing and reopening the application, i.e. mpd, xine, rhythmbox or a stream from firefox, some times). Re: Recover broken SDHC card
Is it really broken? Have you mounted the SD card on another computer or on a Windows system (just in case...)? Tried the camera and three computers with linux, xp and win7. Linux seems to recognize the device (/dev/sdb on this machine), so does xp (there is a drive e:), but it can't be accessed. You can try with the usual recovery tools (Photorec and/or TestDisk¹) but the success will depend on the level of damage on the card. If nothing helps, you can test with the tools provided by the card's manufacturer (usually for Windows) but that's better than nothing ;-( ¹http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec Tried photorec and the tool provided by sandisk, but both can't access the drive. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
Re: LVM - dead disk
Hi Chris, So - I thought I'd try to chroot in from a CD live disk - knoppix was what I had lying around (4.0) - but that doesn't have lvm or has an lvm version difference. The dm_mod kernel module is there, but not the lvm utilities. So, you simply install it. modprobe dm_mod apt-get update apt-get install lvm2 However, the soft links for the lvm commands are not available, so you create them. cd /sbin; ln -s lvmiopversion vgscan; vgscan etc .. As an alternative, you could use a debian install cd. If you're after making experiments with lvm a safer way would be to do it under vmware. You might want to check out the vmware server beta, but that's another story, of course. K. Some time next week - I'll be sticking three new 250Gb disks into it and reinstalling from scratch - but - I'd like to attempt to get the data off if at all possible. Each time something goes wrong you learn a bit - you know ? :) So - is there a live cd out there (or an install set or similar) that will boot far enough to allow me to chroot in and then load the virtual group? Or is there a better way? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Was macht man in so 'nem Fall? Re: USB stick broken?
Look in log files for what system messages when you plugged in the memory. One of them may tell you what device ID the system assigned to the memory. On my machine usb-storage: device found at 8 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning Vendor: Generic Model: USB Flash DiskRev: 7.78 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Attached scsi removable disk sdb at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Attached scsi generic sg1 at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 0 usb-storage: device scan complete Also, you can quickly check if memory is bad by plugging it into a friend's Mac or Windoze computer. If it work there, it will work in Debian, after some setup. It's definitely not a linux/debian issue, since this stick did not work in Windoze and another one works on this system. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi Steve, both problems (nameserver lookups without any user activity and ns lookups when connecting to the mainframe) disappeared after putting the dummy ip addresses for my host(!) for ippp0 and ippp1 into /etc/hosts. Klaus Steve George wrote: Hi, If I get this right you are saying that even though you have a route to the IBM network the ISDN line to your ISP is coming up when you make a connection to the IBM network. My guess would be that the client program you are using is using DNS to connect the IBM host. If you are trying to connect to a place via a name then DNS will be called: you can put the host you want in your /etc/hosts file and alter /etc/resolv.conf so that it checks hosts before the resolver will stop this. As for the DNS calls it has to be something on your network that is trying to get out. I'm guessing you might have looked for things. The only thing I can think of is if the IBM network calls you, if you have tcp_wrappers running and PARANOID in I think it will do a reverse on the incoming IP address to try and stop spoofing. I traces the ip-up script which calls run-parts to execute the scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d. I configured the network in isdnutils and can see that isdnutils is executed for ippp0, but not for ippp1. Where is the call to the ip-up script? Klaus

I tried isdnctrl dialmode ippp0 auto, but dialmode setting not in kernel, which is 2.2.10. I can`t find it in the options. Klaus

You need wish to make xconfig. What do I have to install for my wishes to become true? Klaus
Network setup
I have problems setting up my network with isdn, sync ppp, diald. Debian is 2.1, kernel 2.2.5. The first time I try to connect to the internet diald does not call; after isdnctrl dial ippp0 anything is ok, diald redials if the connection was interrupted because of timeouts. I suspect problems with the initial routing setup. I set up ppp with pppconfig; on startup I get error messages from the route commands in /etc/init.d/network and /etc/device.ippp0 (the route add -host command fails: Operation not supported by device). The init scripts generate an ippp0 and a sl0 slip interface (??), both are set as default gw. I tried ifconfig sl0 down, but the same as before. TIA Klaus
Linker Error Building New Kernel
I installed Debian 2.1 and tried to recompile the 2.0.36 sources. During the link phase I got lot's of unresolved references.
