Re: Math Package to Solve Linear Equations?
There are several matrix languages that support array data and provide matric inversion as well as solvers, including: Matlab/octave, IDL/gdl, S+/R. Of these, the S+/R language is the most modern. It is written by and for statisticians, but offers much the same linear algebra capabilities found in Matlab/octave and IDL/gdl. If you aren't already familiar with Matlab or IDL then I recommend R. The documentation is excellent and it is very widely used. Whilst I agree with the R recommendation, the 'documentation is excellent' bit I strongly disagree with. I count on one hand open source projects with 'excellent' documentation, although this a subjective subject. I have recently been introduced to R and forced to learn it after many years C++, and have found the experience quite (pleasantly) eye-opening, but not through the documentation - rather through a colleague mentoring me. R has huge applicability far beyond statistics, yet all the beginner docs I have read over-stress its (very capable) statistical functionality and provide only very rough guides to its expressive abilities and its wide applicability outside of statistics. It might not sound like it, but this is really a strong vote for R. I just think the docs are too biased towards to stats, thats all. Re: Accessing software programs from disk
Hi Purple Penny, Many thanks for your kind response - my mail was actually a bit of a late night drunken rant :( - you know, you regret it once you've hit the 'send' button... Also, I felt a bit bad as it wasn't really helping your cause much so apologies. Yes, it's a paradigm shift going from Windoze to Linux - I just got frustrated as I was fairly comfortable with previous versions of Debian, but little bits and pieces have changed - the sum of the parts being enough to make tasks I used to be able to do happily different enough that they wouldn't work without digging around in the docs or asking on this list (which is very good BTW). One little example is the way a program called xconsole worked - I have problems with a cheap wireless network card (acx100 - don't ask...) that keeps giving transmission errors so I like to have the xconsole open as it reports me when it starts giving those problems. There's been a small change in how it works from the previous versions of Debian to Etch, and it caught me out...I hope you get my drift as to why I got a little frustrated. On the other hand, the wireless card was a little easier to set up under Etch than Sarge. So swings and roundabouts I guess. It's like having to relearn everything again which takes time. You know what I mean - kind of like when going from Windows 95 to Windows XP - trying to find all those things that have changed places between one version and another. Anyway, yes Linux is much more fun than Windows if you like learning new things - and there's always another level deeper you can go if so desire giving the potential for absolute control over the computer and great flexibility of what you can do. I like Debian because I know (knew...?) it enough to be able to use it - never quite an expert though! I don't hate it at all despite my rant - just having an argument with a good friend :) Stick at it - it pays back the time you invest in it. I have CCed this to debian-user but cut your reply, hope thats OK - glad the apt-cdrom add suggestion worked! Best wishes, Martin violet penny wrote: ... Etch install - worked it out all automatically! Great - but I want (need?) to know wtf is going on behind the scenes so I can tweak stuff the way _I_ want. I'd rather it was hard to configure for _every_ aspect but have control than easy to configure in some aspects and hard in others. xconsole 'can't open console' (etch) - why not?
Hi, Am trying to run xconsole as normal user as I have done on other versions of debian. When I try to run it on an etch box it pops up as expected but with the message 'Can't open console' in it. Now, on my sarge box, which is due for an upgrade, it runs fine. I noticed on sarge /dev/console's group is tty but on etch it's root. So I changed the group of it to tty, but still no joy. So I added myself to group tty (probably silly - it doesn't need that on sarge), but still no luck. I can't see why it can't open the console - can anyone suggest what the problem is as I'm a bit stuck? Thanks, Martin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. etch - how to relax security of xconsole and Xnest
Hi, When I try and run 'xconsole' as a normal user, I get the error message Couldn't open console'. When I try to use Xnest to get a root x login (gdm), I get the error message 'System administrator is not allowed to login to this screen'. I understand the need for secuity, but would like to be able see xconsole as a normal user and Xnest into localhost as root occasionally. I did man xconsole - nothing relevant came up; also man console_ioctls - nothing relevant came up. I have also reduced my x security so that root can remotely login via gdm from other machines on the local net - specifically via xdmcp from either Exceed, XWin32 or even Xnest from cygwin on a windoze box. Trouble is Xnest on the lcoalhost can't... Can anyone help with these two niggling problems? Thanks, Martin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Second, read this: http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html. As 'help I just updated my kernel and now stuff is broke', really doesn't help anyone, epseicially you. How are we to advise you on that? Anyway, did this happen in the transition from sarge to etch? or after the etch upgrade? What kind of network card do you have? Any reason you were doing this through dselect rather than apt-get or aptitude? Maybe even a 'aptitude update aptitude upgrade' may solve some of these issues for you as well.. For your video problem, you can try : dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver that might clear that up. But, in order for anyone to help you, you're going to have to give us some more info. Thx Jeff OK - understood the problem now. The problem was I _didn't_ upgrade the kernel - a did an update (via dselect with apt sources) and 'automatically' got a latest kernel image installed, _prepending_ it to my grub\menu.lst so it became the default. I am a bit behind the times - my kernel only ever got 'updated' when _I_ chose it and built it from scratch using kpkg (or was it kernel_pkg?). You know what I mean... This prevented my network card from working as its an acx100 thing ('specially compiled' (as a module I think from befuddled recollection) with acx100 package). The X resolution problem was booting up without having the monitor connected - X appears more 'windoze' like now and seems to 'auto detect' monitor capability - none attached, lowest res used. When monitor attached (have switch between different boxes) it brings up expected resolution. I'm happy with that as I remember configuring X in the old days with bizarre crappo video cards and cheap monitors with little documentation on their horiz/vertical refresh rates...that was fun :) :( With regards to your response, for which I am grateful: First thing, take a deep breath. How are we to advise you on that? Sorry - i said 'update' as it thats what I did, not _upgrade_. Yes, I am aware everything will be fine (and it kind of is now)- with more time investment since the goalposts have moved since earlier versions of Debian which I cut my teeth on. Any reason you were doing this through dselect rather than apt-get or aptitude? How do I get a list of packages installed/availbale through the apt interface? If I can I will happily move on from dselect which I know and is easy to use and anyway uses uses apt sources. Again, down to cutting teeth on older verisons of debian... I accept a a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and sincerely thank you for your response which was of use and informative. I am merely surprised that doing an 'update available packages' in dselect automatically installed a new kernel image and made it the default boot option in my grub menu.lst. Now fixed. cfdisk and fdisk with slink hang writing partition to SCSI disk...uh-oh
Hi, I've come into an old DEC Prioris HX590DP server which has an aha2940/2940W scsi card, scsi disks a scsi CD and a scsi tape. Installing slink progresses to partiton a hrad disk, but when writing the partition table, cfdisk just sits there saying 'Writing partition table to disk...', and the machine cycles through resetting the disk, tape and CD time and time again. Using fdisk came up with 'Calling IOCTL() tyo re-read partition table' (or something similar) and again just hung. It is annoying that debian can't install/partition the SCSI and that no error messages are generated. What's going on? (I've resorted to installing RH (6.0 or 6.1) which seems to be coping OK (still indstalling...but got through the partition bit and now throwing packages on) hmmm). Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 20:09:16 -0400 This is a guess based on your description of what happens. It almost sounds like you may have, at one point, had this line in your lilo.conf file... boot=/dev/hda1 and the rest of the file was the same as it is now. That would have installed lilo in the boot sector of /dev/hda1, and it may still be there, even though you have since installed Lilo in the MBR (/dev/hda). So when you choose win95, it turns things over to the Lilo boot sector in /dev/hda1 which then gives you the same menu. Linux would still boot normally in that case, but choosing win95 would keep looping you back to the same boot sector in /dev/hda1, and give you the menu again. Have you tried booting from a Win95 floppy disk and see if you can access that partition from a DOS prompt? Because if what I'm suggesting did happen, your Win95 boot record is overwritten with Lilo, and you won't be able to access your C drive. Actually, I hope I'm wrong for your sake. dhcpcd (0.70) under Debian - some problems...
Hi, I have Debian 2.1 (dual boot with another OS...) sitting on a network here at work. Under win95, dhcpcd always gives me the same IP address, but when I boot under Debian, it always gives me a different IP which is annoying as it makes it hard to find by others and myself on the network. Can I get dhcpcd to give me a) the same address each time or preferably b) the same address I get when I boot into win95? Also, when installing the dhcpcd .deb, it would exit with a config error: Error: Post installation script exited with -1 but no more info, and wouldn't work. To get it to work I went into /var/lib/dpkg/info/ and ran the dhcpcd.postinst script I found there directly and it worked fine... But dselect marks it as a failed config and everytime tries to re-install it, thus re-breaking it (I've put it on 'hold' now). Anyway I can found out what the trouble is as the error message is pretty un-informative. Finally, I want to upgrade to a 2.2.x kernel as there a dual processor machine here I want to use - I believe there are some issues with dhcpcd 0.70 and 2.2.x kernels? Are there any easy workarounds so I can use dhcpc and 2.2.x kernels on our internal network? Ta Martin __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I for one would no longer to be able to get the list. I access the internet through a firewall. The policy is restricted viewing only of some newsnet news groups. \dev\psaux: operation not permitted and keyboard layout changing
Hi, I've recently got a new 'old' computer (a p60) withy 2 ide channels instead of one where my secondary debian system used to live. So after recompiling the kernel to add pci bios support for the new 'old' p60, i threw the disks from the older 486 into the p60. Everything is fine and it works a charm bar acouple of things. 1. The p60 has a ps2 mouse (at least, that's the connector type), but gpm won't coinfigure it (it just gets stuck at trying ttyS0-ttyS3 at various baud rates for ever), and when i try to force it to use \dev\psaux i get an 'operation not permitted' error (\dev\psaux exists - crw-- or something similar). Same problems under X to - the server crashes with the 'operation not permitted error'. I remember when setting up debian, the process guides you through what mouse you have - but it's changed now and I don't want to have to re-install Debian just to get the ps2 mouse working! 2. I was using a spanish layout keyboard (don't ask - the secondary system was a mish-mash of scrounged bit's and pieces), but now I have a UK layout one (with a ps2 style connector...), and I don't where to change the default keyboard setting. Re: X-windows (ATI 3D Rage II)
At the X-Free86 web site they said to run X -showconfig I did and it said that I am using version 3.3.2.3 / window system (Protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300). The release date is July, 15 1998 it OK. I ran ls -a and didn't see any file for X. I tried dpkg --status XF86Config it said not installed and no info available. So I don't know if I am looking in the right spots or not but I can't find a XF86Config file to look at. I also don't know how to find the output of X. I know this isn't much but it's all I can muster at the moment. XF86Config is a (text) file for your X configuration. It's at: /etc/X11/XF86Config - copy that file into a mail and post it. At a command prompt (without X already running) type (exactly): X xerrors.txt 21 and press enter. When that's finished, you should have a file in your current working directory called xerrors.txt. Mail that to. That'll tell us what X is getting from your configuration file, and what it's 'auto probing' for itself. Make sure you read: http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/LDP/gs/node7.html#SECTION0070 This explains all about XF86Config and other stuff that you need to know about before trying to get X running. Subject: Re: g++2.8, egcs, gcc 2.7.2, etc. - *very confused* To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Martin Waller) Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 16:30:50 +1100 (EST) Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org From: Jiri Baum [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello, Over the weekend, I downlaoded V 1.20 onto /usr/local/. Did the same last night. I tried compiling it and after finding out that I needed all the OpenGl stuff and isntalling that to (V. annoying by the way - had even to edit some of the source code to get rid of those probelms) I left the source as it was, but added some softlinks, like /usr/include/X11/GL - /usr/include/GL Me to, but I had to edit out some refs. to a /GL/GLw/ directory included file - the header file was actually under /GL, and Glw doesn't exist on my system. But then I got the make error message: In vbglcnv.h:51:Invalid storage class specifiers decalared in friend functions Get rid of the word static on that line. This is what i eventually did, after finally gettinbg a clue as to what it meant. I didn't have a clue what this meant even after viewing the two friend functions alluded to. storage class means auto, static, register or extern; there are two modifiers, const and volatile. In this case, there's only one storage specifier on the whole line (unless there's something in macros), so that had to be what it was complaining about :-) Getting rid of it fixed the problem. I hope it didn't break anything (but FREEdraft compiled and ran okay, so I guess not). But try compiling the vopengl stuff - all the makefiles are set up for windows, even though I downloaded the X version of V. Do you know what's happened to the V mailing list? It just says it's moving on the V site. Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put g++2.7.2 on. (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515). Eeventually, I did get it to compile with egcc and g++ (2.8). I had to edit the Config.mk to use CC=egcc instead of CC=gcc so as not to mix and match g++2.8 and GCC2.7.2. I didn't want to do that, because FREEdraft claimed to use fancy exception-handling that 2.7.x doesn't grok - and that's why I was getting V. There's also a way on the ftp site a way to compile V without the OpenGL stuff. But hell - if it's there why not play. (I'm on a HAMM systen still - it took me 4 goes to get a successful upgrade from bo to that, so I'm not ready to slink it yet). slink isn't released yet, anyway. Indeed, but it is clear from this list that many people with time to spare are upgrading anyway... I think I've got what's up with the different compilers now, but since compiling free source is such a typical Unix tradition, I feel that the documentation on what's going on should be more widely publcicised, like in the general info about installing/upgrading to HAMM. g++2.8, egcs, gcc 2.7.2, etc. - *very confused*
Hi, I am stunningly confused about the whole c and c++ suite thing that's going on (I'm still in HAMM - it's *not * the __register_frame_info stuff!). Here's my story and a plea for a clear explanation of what's what and what I need to compile kernels, c++ toolkits and stuff. Over the weekend, I downlaoded V 1.20 onto /usr/local/. I tried compiling it and after finding out that I needed all the OpenGl stuff and isntalling that to (V. annoying by the way - had even to edit some of the source code to get rid of those probelms), the compile seemed like it would work. But then I got the make error message: In vbglcnv.h:51:Invalid storage class specifiers decalared in friend functions I didn't have a clue what this meant even after viewing the two friend functions alluded to. Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put g++2.7.2 on. (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515). Well, of course no end of conflicts came up (had to remove libdbm++ and stuff), and further more I had to leave some 2.8 thing installed (libg++2.8? libstdc++2.8? libstdc++2.8-dev?libg++2.8-dev? - can't remember as at the time I was in a frenzy of confusion). Eventually I got the downgrade done, and of course the makefile for v complained about there being no g++, so I changed the definition in the file to g++272, and hallelujah! the thing worked. Phew. What a marathon that was and how pleased i was myself to have got the v library compiled after *so many* problems. Back in the old days, with a 1.2.13 kernel and v 1.14, it was easy! So, please help me - why couldn't egcs g++ compile v? Is that version (like some others it would seem...) broken? Or is v using some non-standard c++ shit that breaks on 'modern' compilers? I suspect egcs I am afraid but understand nothing. Would upgrading to the version referred to in the __register_frame_info FAQ work or what (I'm on a HAMM systen still - it took me 4 goes to get a successful upgrade from bo to that, so I'm not ready to slink it yet). Please help. I love linux, and debian is the dist. I've chosen (i'm happy with that), but it just seems there is so much undocumented stuff that can hgo wrong and it takes a great mental effort and lateral thinking to get the stuff i want working! Sorry for the ramble - if you've got this far thanks, Martin __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Re: g++2.8, egcs, gcc 2.7.2, etc. - *very confused*
Read /usr/doc/gcc/README.Debian . I did but was still confused :( Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put g++2.7.2 on. (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515). g++2.7.2 is intended only for compiling code that cannot be compiled with EGCS gcc. It's not supposed to be easy to install or use. is v using some non-standard c++ shit that breaks on 'modern' compilers? That's more likely. I suspect egcs EGCS has proven itself to be a very good C++ compiler so far. OK - then I'd like to understand the error message that came up ('Invalid storage class specifier in friend function declarations').
