I don't understand the question. Aptitude doesn't need X. It's an
ncurses/command-line app. Usually, I run it (curses interface) from a

I think they meant synaptic, not aptitude. The point is exactly that,

Hi Martin,

Were the errors, underlined above, the actual on screen errors as
printed? If so then it is sloppy coding and a bug should be filed.

If not, but caused by mistyping on your part, then could you please in
future either:

1) cut 'n' paste errors into your email client.
or
2) use the script program or redirection and then read the program
into your email program.

If you are using mutt + vim, then from within vim while you are
composing your mail:

 * move the cursor to where you want to type the errors produced

 * press esc to get in command mode

 * type :r filename
where filename is the file either from using script or from using
   redirection.

Mistakes in transcribing error messages can only lead two confusions.
:-)

The errors were 'cut'n'pasted' - thats how the errors appears. I musts
admit I hadn't even noticed the missing 'n' in 'enhancement'. I think
'sloppy coding' is a bit strong for a simple typo like that tho, don't
you? At least it reported an intelligible error. The problem is now
fixed however (follow rest of thread).

Then the vnc is running under 16bits depth, that's why ;-).

Ah yes - that was it. I installed xscreensaver, which then comes
available in gnome, and had to change the xvnc startup in inetd.conf to
use -depth 24 from the default 16 (didn't set the depth previously).

Thanks - I was actually after the 'poltyopes' screensaver I've seen on

Before we can answer that, you must tell us how many screen saver
packages do you already have installed.

Hi Ron,

package gnome-screensaver 2.14.3-3 (etch).

In gnome, 'desktop | Preferences | screensaver shows screeensavers
'Cosmos', 'Floationg Debian', Floating Feet', Pictures Folder', 'Pop

I hope that's sufficient information.

This will give you (amongst the noise) a list of other screen savers
to install:

$ apt-cache search screensaver|sort

Ok - I actually used '/ screeensaver' in aptitude and installed
xscreensaver which has the particular one I'm after in. After some
tweaks to my Xvnc server sratup as per the other branch of this thread,
all is sorted.

Thankyou for your valuable input.

Don't top post.

:( sorry

The first things to do:

Run aptitude interactively (no command args)
Select options, tell it not to include recommends.

Then, go down the list of all packages and if its one that you
yourself don't specifically want installed, then mark it as
automatic. Continue going down the list. When you think you
have it all good:

hit 'g' to see what aptitude would like to do.

If its wrong, fix it (marking things manuall, install,
whatever), then it 'q' to go back to the main screen. Then hit
'g' to see if its correct.

When everything in the first 'g' screen is correct, hit 'g'
again and it will clean out any cruft build-up you have.

Then you can continue to use aptitude as your package manager
and it will keep the system tidy.

Doug.

OK - thanks

Re: Math Package to Solve Linear Equations?

2007-10-07 Thread Martin Waller

There are several matrix languages that support array data and
provide matric inversion as well as solvers, including: Matlab/octave,
IDL/gdl, S+/R. Of these, the S+/R language is the most modern. It is
written by and for statisticians, but offers much the same linear
algebra capabilities found in Matlab/octave and IDL/gdl. If you
aren't already familiar with Matlab or IDL then I recommend R. The
documentation is excellent and it is very widely used.

Whilst I agree with the R recommendation, the 'documentation is
excellent' bit I strongly disagree with. I count on one hand open
source projects with 'excellent' documentation, although this a
subjective subject.

I have recently been introduced to R and forced to learn it after many
years C++, and have found the experience quite (pleasantly) eye-opening,
but not through the documentation - rather through a colleague mentoring me.

R has huge applicability far beyond statistics, yet all the beginner
docs I have read over-stress its (very capable) statistical
functionality and provide only very rough guides to its expressive
abilities and its wide applicability outside of statistics.

It might not sound like it, but this is really a strong vote for R. I
just think the docs are too biased towards to stats, thats all.

FWIW,

Martin

Have you looked at the release notes? Perhaps:

OK - thanks. This just takes me to section 5.14 - default editor...I
know you're trying but that doesn't help much ;)

It seems the bits of documentation I can find on the debian site don't
match up with etch. I cannot undertsand that and will not comment.

Release Notes for Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (etch), Intel x86 - Issues to
be aware of for etch

5.3 XFree86 to X.Org transition

I'm not transitioning - install from scratch on an old machine.

Also, /etc/X11/xorg.conf and $ man xorg.conf.

Post errors from /var/log/ for more help.

The best I can do to determine my (PCI) card is read what's on the
card/chip which says:

MATROX - MGA 1164SG-A

I tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, which asked lots opf questions
many of which bore no semblance of what xf86config used to ask. In
particular something about a PCI Bus ID...

I took the defaults when prompted as I knew not what else to put.
xf86config in woody/sarge worked fine with this card - I know its old
but c'mon...even shitty windows can provide a driver for it.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log output as follows:

Did you try dexconf?

I did now. It just did nothing - no error message, no output of any
kind, nothing.

Changed nothing. Thanks for suggestion,. but given the above, and
without wishing to cast doubt on the quality of dexconf, something
don't work somewhere!

Man page for it gave no clues either.

Is it just me or was it easier when stuff wasn't dumbed down to
'attract windows users'? I was never very quick, bit when I had to find
out I could - I mean at least the docs were up to date so RTFM was
actually a useful suggestionif only I could find it (or an uptodate
version)!

Right - got X working (dunno how - just ran through dpg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg again with same inputs and suddenly it gives me something)
but with crappo resolution.

Here's my Xorg.conf: (what dpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg wrote):

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type man /etc/X11/xorg.conf at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: Accessing software programs from disk

2007-09-14 Thread Martin Waller

Hi Purple Penny,

Many thanks for your kind response - my mail was actually a bit of a
late night drunken rant :( - you know, you regret it once you've hit the
'send' button...

Also, I felt a bit bad as it wasn't really helping your cause much so
apologies.

Yes, it's a paradigm shift going from Windoze to Linux - I just got
frustrated as I was fairly comfortable with previous versions of Debian,
but little bits and pieces have changed - the sum of the parts being
enough to make tasks I used to be able to do happily different enough
that they wouldn't work without digging around in the docs or asking on
this list (which is very good BTW). One little example is the way a
program called xconsole worked - I have problems with a cheap wireless
network card (acx100 - don't ask...) that keeps giving transmission
errors so I like to have the xconsole open as it reports me when it
starts giving those problems. There's been a small change in how it
works from the previous versions of Debian to Etch, and it caught me
out...I hope you get my drift as to why I got a little frustrated. On
the other hand, the wireless card was a little easier to set up under
Etch than Sarge. So swings and roundabouts I guess.

It's like having to relearn everything again which takes time. You know
what I mean - kind of like when going from Windows 95 to Windows XP -
trying to find all those things that have changed places between one
version and another.

Anyway, yes Linux is much more fun than Windows if you like learning
new things - and there's always another level deeper you can go if so
desire giving the potential for absolute control over the computer and
great flexibility of what you can do.

I like Debian because I know (knew...?) it enough to be able to use it -
never quite an expert though! I don't hate it at all despite my rant -
just having an argument with a good friend :)

Stick at it - it pays back the time you invest in it.

I have CCed this to debian-user but cut your reply, hope thats OK - glad
the apt-cdrom add suggestion worked!

Best wishes,

Martin

I used to like Debian because it was free of such stuff - once
learnt, you could always use it. Even if at first it was a paradigm
shift. Yeah, there's that apt-get shite, but once you got it it
was constant.

But now, well, I sympathise with you - there seems to be too much
pressure to conform with people's 'windoze' expectations of things
being 'automagically' updated, things getting updated 'for you',
'for your own good'. Too many changes to too many key aspects of
the system to be able to keep up with unless your some college
student with no real-life mundanities (is that a real word?
wotevah...) to sort out every day.

Complexity was never an issue for me, just change for the sake of
change, and I can't help Debian has somehow lost it's way. Just my
upgrade from sarge to etch seems to have brought so many changes
into my system without me being able to control them. I want to be
in control - that's what I hate about windoze (lack of control or
choice).

Two examples - update available packages using dselect front end to
apt - new kernels automatically get installed! Never used to
happen. I don't want that by default - never had issues with it in
previous Debian versions.

2nd eg - X - used to be a pain to set up, but you knew what the
'bejeezuz' was going on once it was set up. Etch install - worked
it out all automatically! Great - but I want (need?) to know wtf
is going on behind the scenes so I can tweak stuff the way _I_
want. I'd rather it was hard to configure for _every_ aspect but
have control than easy to configure in some aspects and hard in
others. With that I lose two ways - I lose control in some aspects
and the other aspects they keep f***ing changing every upgrade.
Smells like s**t to me - eat windoze!

Expect flames - talk to the hand.

Once a debian advocate, now an ubuntu-maybe (hurts). I gotta deal
with 'Redhat Enterprise 64 bit' (F**k!) for my new job, so perhaps
I shouldn't complain but, well, it's the thought that counts.

I just get the feel something's changed for the less-good with
Debian. Maybe thats just the way Linux is evolving.

Why doin't I have StringDefs.h in X11 include? (etch)

2007-09-12 Thread Martin Waller

Hi,

Trying to compile something that requires X11/StringDefs.h, but I get
an error sayinf StringDefs.h can't be found.

A find cannot locate it anywhere on my system - have I missed some
important X!! dev package or something? Other includes appear to be
present in /usr/include/X11...

?

apt-file search StringDefs.h

after

aptitude install apt-file -s

has helped me a lot of times when searching for stuff like this

Thanx! That's a useful tip. To answer my own question in the meantime
via sepearate methods was that I was missing xorg-dev (which I wrongly
thought I had already installed)...

xconsole 'can't open console' (etch) - why not?

2007-09-11 Thread Martin Waller

Hi,

Am trying to run xconsole as normal user as I have done on other
versions of debian.

When I try to run it on an etch box it pops up as expected but with the
message 'Can't open console' in it.

Now, on my sarge box, which is due for an upgrade, it runs fine. I
noticed on sarge /dev/console's group is tty but on etch it's root. So
I changed the group of it to tty, but still no joy. So I added myself
to group tty (probably silly - it doesn't need that on sarge), but still
no luck.

I can't see why it can't open the console - can anyone suggest what the
problem is as I'm a bit stuck?

Thanks,

Martin

etch - how to relax security of xconsole and Xnest

2007-09-09 Thread Martin Waller

Hi,

When I try and run 'xconsole' as a normal user, I get the error message
Couldn't open console'.

When I try to use Xnest to get a root x login (gdm), I get the error
message 'System administrator is not allowed to login to this screen'.

I understand the need for secuity, but would like to be able see
xconsole as a normal user and Xnest into localhost as root occasionally.

I did man xconsole - nothing relevant came up; also man console_ioctls -
nothing relevant came up.

I have also reduced my x security so that root can remotely login via
gdm from other machines on the local net - specifically via xdmcp from
either Exceed, XWin32 or even Xnest from cygwin on a windoze box.

Trouble is Xnest on the lcoalhost can't...

Can anyone help with these two niggling problems?

Thanks,

Martin

Hi,

No idea whats gone wrong - I did a get updates thing using dselect
whilst installing some other software and find loads of my
configurations have changed.

I guess its a result of this: http://www.debian.org/News/2007/20070817

First, my /boot/grub/menu.lst has been dicked around with:
- originally I had two options - multi and single user mode (Debian
GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-4-686)
now I have four with kernel 2.6.18-5-86 options higher up the
list...this stopped my network from working unless I select the now
not default option I wanted originally. I remember some operating
system called Windows that dicked around with configuration files
without asking - I avoid it wherever possible.. Don't tell me Debian
has gone this way? *rolls eyes*.

Does this mean my kernel has been updated automatically? Please no.

Secondly, OK so I can delete that crap from my menu.lst or select the
other oirignal options - but now my X sessions all start up in
640x480 (gnome) and I can't change the resolution!

I'd got all this set up nicely, and a simple update dicks around with
stuff and screws up my system - how can this be possible?

I guess I need 'educating' in how Debian operates now, and how to
'undo' the bad side effects I'm suffering, but if I can't resolve
this stuff I'll switch distros. I've only just updated from
Debian3.1 where I never had such issues - I'm upset and confused.

Thanks for any help,

Martin

First thing, take a deep breath. It will be fine. Second, read this:
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html. As 'help I just
updated my kernel and now stuff is broke', really doesn't help anyone,
epseicially you. How are we to advise you on that?

Anyway, did this happen in the transition from sarge to etch? or after
the etch upgrade? What kind of network card do you have? Any reason
you were doing this through dselect rather than apt-get or aptitude?
Maybe even a 'aptitude update aptitude upgrade' may solve some of
these issues for you as well..

For your video problem, you can try :
dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver

that might clear that up.

But, in order for anyone to help you, you're going to have to give us
some more info.

Thx
Jeff

OK - understood the problem now.

The problem was I _didn't_ upgrade the kernel - a did an update (via
dselect with apt sources) and 'automatically' got a latest kernel image
installed, _prepending_ it to my grub\menu.lst so it became the
default. I am a bit behind the times - my kernel only ever got
'updated' when _I_ chose it and built it from scratch using kpkg (or was
it kernel_pkg?). You know what I mean...

This prevented my network card from working as its an acx100 thing
('specially compiled' (as a module I think from befuddled recollection)
with acx100 package).

The X resolution problem was booting up without having the monitor
connected - X appears more 'windoze' like now and seems to 'auto detect'
monitor capability - none attached, lowest res used. When monitor
attached (have switch between different boxes) it brings up expected
resolution. I'm happy with that as I remember configuring X in the old
days with bizarre crappo video cards and cheap monitors with little
documentation on their horiz/vertical refresh rates...that was fun :) :(

With regards to your response, for which I am grateful:

First thing, take a deep breath. It will be fine. Second, read this:

my kernel and now stuff is broke', really doesn't help anyone,

Sorry - i said 'update' as it thats what I did, not _upgrade_. Yes, I am
aware everything will be fine (and it kind of is now)- with more time
investment since the goalposts have moved since earlier versions of
Debian which I cut my teeth on.

Any reason you were doing this through dselect rather than apt-get or
aptitude?

How do I get a list of packages installed/availbale through the apt
interface? If I can I will happily move on from dselect which I know and
is easy to use and anyway uses uses apt sources. Again, down to cutting
teeth on older verisons of debian...

I accept a a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and sincerely thank
you for your response which was of use and informative.

I am merely surprised that doing an 'update available packages' in
dselect automatically installed a new kernel image and made it the
default boot option in my grub menu.lst.

Now fixed.

Best wishes, a friendly interaction is always a pleasant one,

Martin

Help! Update screwed my box up 'automagically'!

2007-09-01 Thread Martin Waller

GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-4-686)
now I have four with kernel 2.6.18-5-86 options higher up the
list...this stopped my network from working unless I select the now not
default option I wanted originally. I remember some operating system
called Windows that dicked around with configuration files without
asking - I avoid it wherever possible.. Don't tell me Debian has gone
this way? *rolls eyes*.

Does this mean my kernel has been updated automatically? Please no.

Secondly, OK so I can delete that crap from my menu.lst or select the
other oirignal options - but now my X sessions all start up in 640x480
(gnome) and I can't change the resolution!

I'd got all this set up nicely, and a simple update dicks around with
stuff and screws up my system - how can this be possible?

I guess I need 'educating' in how Debian operates now, and how to 'undo'
the bad side effects I'm suffering, but if I can't resolve this stuff
I'll switch distros. I've only just updated from Debian3.1 where I
never had such issues - I'm upset and confused.

Thanks for any help,

Martin

ASDL with potato? FreeSWAN with potato?

2001-10-15 Thread Martin Waller

Hello,

Two (well 3 I suppose) questions.

Can I get ASDL with British Telecom to work under potato, and if so how?
Otherwise, how hard is ISDN to get working?

Secondly (or thirdly I suppose) has anyone got FreeSWAN to work under
potato? Say if I install it myself?

ah1542 scsi CD probs, deb potato

2001-03-15 Thread Martin Waller

Hello,

I've swapped a scsi cd I had (working fine, btw) in an old machine to a
newer one.

Trouble is, when booting from the deb potato rescue floppy I get the
following:

scsi0: Adapatec 1542
scsi: 1 host
aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
aha1542.c: Trying device reset for target 0
aha1542_out failed(2): aha1542.c: Unable to abort command for target 0
sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
.
.
(this then repeats)
.
.
Vendor: Model: Rev:
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

This cycle repeats through the other 6 possible ids, and at the end says:
scsi: detected 7 SCSI disks total

Then the whole thing repeats again...

aarrgghh!

I had this working before in the other machine - WTF can the problem be?

Thanks for reading this far if you have!

I did a little Woodage for the Helix-GNOME install. I'm still mostly
Potato.

Here's what I did:

1) Change the stable to unstable lines to /etc/apt/sources.list and add
deb

it.

2) apt-get update
3) apt-get install task-helix-gnome
4) Change the unstable lines in sources.list back to stable. (Except for
the

helixcode entry.)

Upgrading X (without buggering up desalect?)

2000-04-11 Thread Martin Waller

Hello,

I have a nice new 8MB Savage4 Pro. XFree 3.3.2 does not support it - I need
a newer version of X. Seems Debian's getting a bit behind the times of late

So, does this mean I have to upgrade X manually, and if so, will this screw

cfdisk and fdisk with slink hang writing partition to SCSI disk...uh-oh

1999-10-27 Thread Martin Waller

Hi,

I've come into an old DEC Prioris HX590DP server which has an aha2940/2940W
scsi card, scsi disks a scsi CD and a scsi tape.

Installing slink progresses to partiton a hrad disk, but when writing the
partition table, cfdisk just sits there saying 'Writing partition table to
disk...', and the machine cycles through resetting the disk, tape and CD
time and time again.

Using fdisk came up with 'Calling IOCTL() tyo re-read partition table' (or
something similar) and again just hung.

It is annoying that debian can't install/partition the SCSI and that no
error messages are generated.

What's going on?

(I've resorted to installing RH (6.0 or 6.1) which seems to be coping OK
(still indstalling...but got through the partition bit and now throwing
packages on) hmmm).

sounds like you may have, at one point, had this line in your lilo.conf

if the above is the case an easier way is to uninstall lilo as follows:

lilo -u /dev/hda1

this will restore the saved boot sector from /boot/boot. of the device
specified with the -u option.

Subject: Re: LILO won't load win95, but no error...??
Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 20:09:16 -0400

This is a guess based on your description of what happens. It almost

sounds like you may have, at one point, had this line in your lilo.conf
file...

boot=/dev/hda1

and the rest of the file was the same as it is now.

That would have installed lilo in the boot sector of /dev/hda1, and it
may still be there, even though you have since installed Lilo in the MBR
(/dev/hda). So when you choose win95, it turns things over to the Lilo
boot sector in /dev/hda1 which then gives you the same menu.

Linux would still boot normally in that case, but choosing win95 would
keep looping you back to the same boot sector in /dev/hda1, and give you
the menu again.

Have you tried booting from a Win95 floppy disk and see if you can
access that partition from a DOS prompt? Because if what I'm suggesting
did happen, your Win95 boot record is overwritten with Lilo, and you
won't be able to access your C drive.

Actually, I hope I'm wrong for your sake.

Tom

dhcpcd to give me a) the same address each time or preferably b) the same
address I get when I boot into win95?

Also, when installing the dhcpcd .deb, it would exit with a config error:
Error: Post installation script exited with -1

but no more info, and wouldn't work.

To get it to work I went into /var/lib/dpkg/info/ and ran the
dhcpcd.postinst script I found there directly and it worked fine...

But dselect marks it as a failed config and everytime tries to re-install
it, thus re-breaking it (I've put it on 'hold' now). Anyway I can found out
what the trouble is as the error message is pretty un-informative.

Finally, I want to upgrade to a 2.2.x kernel as there a dual processor
machine here I want to use - I believe there are some issues with dhcpcd
0.70 and 2.2.x kernels? Are there any easy workarounds so I can use dhcpc
and 2.2.x kernels on our internal network?

Re: M$CHAP with PPP

I had problems connecting to my provider with chap (but whether its the same

Ok, my chap-secrets file is set up like this...

   ntdomain\\username isp password
   isp ntdomain\\username password

I do know that the ntdomain must be given. Even logging in with Win, you
get repeated authorization dialogs until you enter the correct NT domain.

In my /etc/ppp/peers/isp file I have:

   hide-password
   noauth
   connect /usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/isp
   debug
   /dev/ttyS1
   115200
   defaultroute
   noipdefault
   -am
   user username
   remotename isp
   ipparam isp
   usepeerdns

Note that I had to include the -am option in the above because when my side
of the connection sent an LCP packet requesting asyncmap negotiation
(usually

the first thing sent), the other side dropped carrier.

Finally, /etc/chatscript/isp is:

ABORT BUSY ABORT 'NO CARRIER' ABORT VOICE ABORT 'NO DIALTONE' ABORT
'NO DIAL TONE' ABORT 'NO ANSWER'

   '' ATZ
   OK-AT-OK ATDT*70,ispphone
   CONNECT \d\c

I'm at a loss to figure out anything else to do. I have logged in using
Win dial-up, so I know the username/password/ntdomain are correct. Any
ideas?

Hello,

I managed to break the motherboard of my main pc, so I'm setting up netscape

Can I turn this dns helper thing off so I can set up my mail and news

That's normal - I don't know enough to tell you why, but when linking X
libs, x11 goes last, Xt next and then Xm first (or Xaw for athena):

-lXm -lXt -lX11

That's the way it is and it is documented in various basic intros to X

(see http://www.rahul.net/kenton/xsites.framed.html for loads of stuff on X

My test case, at first it appeared to fix the problem but my main app was
still broken. I noticed by reading the straces of the application runs that
on
my test case that worked I had -lXm before -lXt, and the main app had -lXT
-lXm

on the compile line. Both cases compiled cleanly, without warnings

the

app would run sucessfully.

Is this a problem with the loader/linker or Lesstif or in XFree?

Yes, this is intended. You unpack it when you need it (with tar xfvz )
and it is also easier to handle by the packages manager.

It you install the rpm package, it will create these directories, as

I am looking to start writing c/c++ programs under debian.
The question is what utilitys are availble to maintain and write
projects.

Make, Imake, autoconf

also are there any online ducumentation about the options.

Probably...possibly lots. Do a search and there'll be hits a plenty I
fancy.

I also interested about how to write graphical programs (not neseserily
complicated ones, just to display images) and i was wondering how to do
it under linux/X11.

Steep learning curve.

Also is there some way to get help about functions (something like
clicking on a function in borland c) through some external program.
How do i get a list of available functions and library's, and what
function is in each library?

manpages for c functions

Try some X libraries for c++, like Vgui, Qt, wxWindows, etc. V is
completely free and works under Winows to (free for that as well).

Help with PAP!

1999-03-11 Thread Martin Waller
Helllo,

I am now connecting to a different server from my ISP for X2 V.90
dialup.

Previosly, to dial in all I had to do was change
/etc/chatscripts/provider with my username and password and the number
to phone (there was no PAP/CHAP authentication).

Now allegedly there is some sort of PAP authentification required, and
no script is run (so no expect: ogin stuff).

Under NT 4.0, the settings I use are don't run a script, dynamic DNS
server (but have their IP adresses) and accept any authentication
including clear text. This works.

I'm confused about what to do with Debian (ham) however - shoudl I not
be running my chatscript? If I just change the dialup number, name, etc
in /etc/chatscripts/provider when I dialin I get garbage after expect:
ogin

{}{#}}{*^###

type stuff.

How should I connect now there's PAP authentication and no script being
run at the providers end?

Confused,

Martin

I for one would no longer to be able to get the list. I access the

Why not organize as a newsgroup

\dev\psaux: operation not permitted and keyboard layout changing

1998-12-22 Thread Martin Waller
Hi,

I've recently got a new 'old' computer (a p60) withy 2 ide channels
instead of one where my secondary debian system used to live.

So after recompiling the kernel to add pci bios support for the new
'old' p60, i threw the disks from the older 486 into the p60.

Everything is fine and it works a charm bar acouple of things.

1. The p60 has a ps2 mouse (at least, that's the connector type), but
gpm won't coinfigure it (it just gets stuck at trying ttyS0-ttyS3 at
various baud rates for ever), and when i try to force it to use
\dev\psaux i get an 'operation not permitted' error (\dev\psaux exists -
crw-- or something similar). Same problems under X to - the server
crashes with the 'operation not permitted error'.

I remember when setting up debian, the process guides you through what
mouse you have - but it's changed now and I don't want to have to
re-install Debian just to get the ps2 mouse working!

2. I was using a spanish layout keyboard (don't ask - the secondary
system was a mish-mash of scrounged bit's and pieces), but now I have a
UK layout one (with a ps2 style connector...), and I don't where to
change the default keyboard setting. Under X i do, but the base system.
Any one able to help me?

Thanks,

Martin

it said not installed and no info available. So I don't know if I am
looking in the right spots or not but I can't find a XF86Config file to
look
at. I also don't know how to find the output of X.

I know this isn't much but it's all I can muster at the moment.

XF86Config is a (text) file for your X configuration. It's at:

/etc/X11/XF86Config - copy that file into a mail and post it.

At a command prompt (without X already running) type (exactly):

X xerrors.txt 21

and press enter.

When that's finished, you should have a file in your current working
directory called xerrors.txt. Mail that to. That'll tell us what X is
getting from your configuration file, and what it's 'auto probing' for
itself.

Make sure you read:

http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/LDP/gs/node7.html#SECTION0070

This explains all about XF86Config and other stuff that you need to know
about before trying to get X running.

OK, I called IBM (I'm using an Aptiva 2137-E24). My monitor is SVGA,
she said
the chipset is ATI (I found more detailed info in Windows, it is an ATI
RAGE
II + 3D graphic controller); the RamDac she said was 24MB but after
looking at
the drop down menu (while trying to configure x-windows) I think she
was
referring to the amount of SDRAM my computer came with; the clockchip
she said
was an overlay chip and couldn't provide any additional info; the video
Ram is
2MB SGRAM. The monitor is a G42 (M/T 6540) color 14 inch crt. So that
is the
monitor info I don't know if that is enough to go by. The closest
chipset to
mine seems to be Ati Mach 64 3D Rage II, Internal RAMDAC which I tried
and
ended up with a black screen. I also noticed when going through the
set up of
my mouse (it is a PS/2 I set it to /dev/psaux) that by default it sets
to a 3
button mouse and I only have two buttons, I couldn't figure out how to
change
that. I didn't receive any more error messages so I can't add to that.
Hope
this isn't too convoluted.
Thanks,
Kent

Don't despair, it sometimes takes a while to configure X properly,
but
 you'll get there.

Firstly, what information do you have about your computer hardware?
Have you recently bought the computer? You should try and find out
what kind of graphics card it has, what chipset the graphics card
uses
etc etc. Sometimes the graphics card is an actual card that is
inserted into the bus on the motherboard of your computer. Other
times, the graphics chip is built into the actual motherboard itself.
In either case you need to find out what kind of chipset it is. This
will tell you which xserver to use. The most common type of xserver
that is used is xserver-svga, so it is most likely you will have to
 use this one.

You also need to know what kind of mouse you have. Is it a two
button
mouse or a three button mouse? Is it a serial mouse?

What kind of monitor do you have?

the instillation program it tries to bring the the x-windows up but
it
can't and says there was errono=111

What other information does it tell you? It might tell you what
chipset
it detected and other information. Does it describe anything else
about
 the error?

See what information you can find out, and then get back to this
list.
Hopefully either I, or someone else on the list, will be able to help
 some more.

 Cheers,

 Mark.

Hello,

 Over the weekend, I downlaoded V 1.20 onto /usr/local/.

Did the same last night.

I tried compiling it and after finding out that I needed all the
OpenGl
stuff and isntalling that to (V. annoying by the way - had even to
edit some
of the source code to get rid of those probelms)

I left the source as it was, but added some softlinks, like
/usr/include/X11/GL - /usr/include/GL

Me to, but I had to edit out some refs. to a /GL/GLw/ directory included
file - the header file was actually under /GL, and Glw doesn't exist on
my system.

But then I got the make error message:

In vbglcnv.h:51:Invalid storage class specifiers decalared in friend
 functions

Get rid of the word static on that line.

This is what i eventually did, after finally gettinbg a clue as to what
it meant.

I didn't have a clue what this meant even after viewing the two
friend
 functions alluded to.

storage class means auto, static, register or extern; there are two
modifiers, const and volatile.

In this case, there's only one storage specifier on the whole line
(unless
there's something in macros), so that had to be what it was complaining
about
:-)

Getting rid of it fixed the problem. I hope it didn't break anything
(but
FREEdraft compiled and ran okay, so I guess not).

But try compiling the vopengl stuff - all the makefiles are set up for
windows, even though I downloaded the X version of V.

Do you know what's happened to the V mailing list? It just says it's
moving on the V site.

Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of
problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put
g++2.7.2 on.
 (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515).

Eeventually, I did get it to compile with egcc and g++ (2.8). I had to
edit the Config.mk to use CC=egcc instead of CC=gcc so as not to mix and
match g++2.8 and GCC2.7.2.

I didn't want to do that, because FREEdraft claimed to use fancy
exception-handling that 2.7.x doesn't grok - and that's why I was
getting V.

There's also a way on the ftp site a way to compile V without the OpenGL
stuff. But hell - if it's there why not play.

(I'm on a HAMM systen still - it took me 4 goes to get a successful
upgrade
from bo to that, so I'm not ready to slink it yet).

slink isn't released yet, anyway.

Indeed, but it is clear from this list that many people with time to
spare are upgrading anyway...

I think I've got what's up with the different compilers now, but since
compiling free source is such a typical Unix tradition, I feel that the
documentation on what's going on should be more widely publcicised, like
in the general info about installing/upgrading to HAMM.

g++2.8, egcs, gcc 2.7.2, etc. - *very confused*

1998-12-07 Thread Martin Waller
Hi,

I am stunningly confused about the whole c and c++ suite thing that's
going on (I'm still in HAMM - it's *not * the __register_frame_info
stuff!).

Here's my story and a plea for a clear explanation of what's what and
what I need to compile kernels, c++ toolkits and stuff.

Over the weekend, I downlaoded V 1.20 onto /usr/local/. I tried
compiling it and after finding out that I needed all the OpenGl stuff
and isntalling that to (V. annoying by the way - had even to edit some
of the source code to get rid of those probelms), the compile seemed
like it would work. But then I got the make error message:

In vbglcnv.h:51:Invalid storage class specifiers decalared in friend
functions

I didn't have a clue what this meant even after viewing the two friend
functions alluded to.

Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of
problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put g++2.7.2
on. (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515).

Well, of course no end of conflicts came up (had to remove libdbm++ and
stuff), and further more I had to leave some 2.8 thing installed
(libg++2.8? libstdc++2.8? libstdc++2.8-dev?libg++2.8-dev? - can't
remember as at the time I was in a frenzy of confusion). Eventually I
got the downgrade done, and of course the makefile for v complained
about there being no g++, so I changed the definition in the file to
g++272, and hallelujah! the thing worked. Phew. What a marathon that
was and how pleased i was myself to have got the v library compiled
after *so many* problems.

Back in the old days, with a 1.2.13 kernel and v 1.14, it was easy!

So, please help me - why couldn't egcs g++ compile v? Is that version
(like some others it would seem...) broken? Or is v using some
non-standard c++ shit that breaks on 'modern' compilers? I suspect egcs
I am afraid but understand nothing. Would upgrading to the version
referred to in the __register_frame_info FAQ work or what (I'm on a
HAMM systen still - it took me 4 goes to get a successful upgrade from
bo to that, so I'm not ready to slink it yet).

Please help. I love linux, and debian is the dist. I've chosen (i'm
happy with that), but it just seems there is so much undocumented stuff
that can hgo wrong and it takes a great mental effort and lateral
thinking to get the stuff i want working!

Sorry for the ramble - if you've got this far thanks,

Martin

Read /usr/doc/gcc/README.Debian .

I did but was still confused :(

Being naive enough to try anything, and having heard of all sorts of
problems with egcs and g++, I decided to scrap g++2.8 and put
g++2.7.2 on.
 (I had egcs 2.90.29, dated 19980515).

g++2.7.2 is intended only for compiling code that cannot be compiled
with
EGCS gcc. It's not supposed to be easy to install or use.

 is v using some
non-standard c++ shit that breaks on 'modern' compilers?

That's more likely.

 I suspect egcs

EGCS has proven itself to be a very good C++ compiler so far.

OK - then I'd like to understand the error message that came up
('Invalid storage class specifier in friend function declarations').
Here's the code up to the friend functions decls. where the
aforementioned error message is generated:

Also, is there a way to change the default xdm background (i.e. the
login screen)? The greyish default is kinda nasty.

 Thanks!

Can't resolve host names _inside_ firewall!?

1998-11-27 Thread Martin Waller
Hi,

After figuring out that my dhcpcd problems were due to a corrupted file
in /var/run/some dhcpceth0conf type file, I now find I can't resolve
hostnames/addresses _inside_ our firewall (it's fine for sites outside
on the internet).

I know littela botu networking so am not sure where the problem is, but
under win95 (yuk), winipcfg gives:

my hostname
the address of 2 DNS servers
a node type of 'hybrid'
The 'NetBIOS Resolution Uses DNS box is ticked
My IP address
subnt mask
default gateway
DHCP server
Primary WINS server (same as DHCP server)
Secondary WINS server

Any clues as to why I can't resolve host names inside the firewall? It
means I can't get apache to work (get a 'can't resolve address for
hostname' error in /var/apache/error.log), and to get Xwin32 to work
so colleagues can log in via X (inside firewall), I have to put their
hostname and address in /etc/hosts/ to allow them to log in, or I get
similar 'can't resolve hostname' errors in /var/log/xdm-errors.

Please help a new-ishbie!

Martin

dhcpc- not getting anything

1998-11-25 Thread Martin Waller
Hi,

After a broken upgrade, I re-installed Debian2.0. With 1.3, I'd
installed dhcpc and it like worked right out of the box i think.

For my re-install, i set up the base system and said | was on a network
and filled in all the info.

Then, I installed dhcpc thinking it would like get all that info
automatically for me and ignore the /etc/init.d/network file. Bu it
isn't getting ignored, and if i take everything out of
/etc/init.d/network, dhcpc, although it gets run, won't grab anything
like my host ip address and stuff. It worked before without any
twaeking - what do I need to do to get it to reun properly?

(ip interface is eth0)

where should I put things for rc.local?

I want to set up ip masquerading, but the docs all talk about other
dists and puting things in their /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.

Where should I put stuff that normally you'd just bung in rc.local for
Debian?

my modem keeps 'hanging itself up'!?

1998-11-22 Thread Martin Waller
Hi,

My modem is behaving oddly suddenly - it keeps getting reset or
something after about 10mins or so, making big-ish downloads a pain.

It's happened under NT as well as Linux, especially in the evenings
(UK).

Under Linux I get (in ppp.log and in the console) (something like...)
'Echo requests failed 4 times'
'serial connection appears to have been terminated'
'NO LINE'

Also, last night, it seemed to happen after ~6 mins, then ~3 mins, then
1min until whenever I dialled up I got 'NO LINE', as if the errors came
faster and faster.

It seems to happen when ftp-ing (but that could be a coincidence) and
before the modem get's reset, the tone on the phone is just a long
continuos montonous beep (like you get when you're cut off...).

So, whats the prob.? Hardware? (it's worked fine for years - a standard
14.4 internal) Software? (happens more under Linux it seems, esp. after
upgrading from bo to hamm [but could be coincidence?]), ISP provider?
Telephone line?

How can I find out what's causing the problem?

Please help,

Martin

There was a dialling tone tho'...

But when it hangs

Your still using your old 14.4? I'd try a new modem. They have some
really nice 56Ks for alot less than you paid for that 14.4 back in the
day.
