Paul , please provide details of what happens when you attempt to
remove aptitude. Preferably, copy and paste the console output
including the initial command line used.

$ sudo aptitude remove aptitude

give to me an error message about that that tasksel is a broken

After I remove aptitude and tasksel and install these again (with
apt-get), I can to remove flashplugin-nonfree and install it again.

Now iceweasel works fine. :)

aptitude purge flashplugin-nonfree hang

2008-06-15 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

My System is Debian GNU/Linux Etch and Half.

I have installed flashplugin-nonfree and it works well with iceweasel
so far.

Then I edit /apt/sources.list
---
deb http://www.backports.org/debian etch-backports main contrib non-free
---

and setup apt to can use deb packages from Debian Backports.

I edit the /apt/preferences file:
---
Package: *
Pin: release a=etch-backports
Pin-Priority: 200
--

Then I made an upgrade and I think then was upgraded
flashplugin-nonfree too.

Now I have flashplugin-nonfree version 1:1.4~bpo40+1.

The iceweasel crash when I try to open a webpage:
http://www.hobbielektronika.hu/cikkek/nullarol_a_robotokig_-_pic_mikrovezerlok_i_resz.html?pg=1Submit=%3E%3E

That was yesterday. Today iceweasel can't open at all this web page.

I can't to purge nor remove flashplugin-nonfree with aptitude.

Aptitude hangs at this task.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Any advices will be appreciated!

Now, when I have finally installed GRUB on the sda so I can to boot

Netinstall CD in rescue mode.

I run a shall in the rescue mode on the root partition of the Debian
Etch system (on the sdb). There I chroot target/ , mount /usr/ and run
grub:

grub root (hd1,0)
grub setup (hd0)
grub quit

Another tip is to type something like root ( + tab, it will give
you all of possible devices, then complete the name of one device
and use tab again, GRUB should then tell you which file system is on
that disk which might so help you.

The tip that you wrote down abowe is helpful.

migrating Debian GNU/Linux Etch to second SATA drive

2008-05-08 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

I tried to migrating from the first to second SATA drive My Debian
Etch OS with Gparted.

I copied the /, /usr, /var, swap, /tmp, /home partitions of the system
to the second SATA: sdb with Gparted.

Then I tried to set up grub to boot this Debian system from the first
SATA drive sda, and did the following:

- boot the install CD of the Etch Netinstall
- at prompt use expert
- ...
- detecting disks
- did not disk partition
- run a shell

Here I follow the mini howto:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Reinstalling_GRUB

cd /
mount -t ext3 /dev/discs/disc1/part1 /mnt
# this is the / partition of the sdb
mount -t ext3 /dev/discs/disc1/part2 /mnt/usr
# this is the /usr partition of the sdb
mount -t proc proc /mnt/proc
mount -t sysfs sys /mnt/sys
mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
chroot /mnt /bin/bash

grub-install /dev/sda

Error: /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc does not have any
corresponding BIOS drive.

I can't here as root to use nano because of the bterm error. I did the
following to get some editor, namely mcedit:

TERM=xterm
export TERM
mcedit /etc/fstab

I can to use here mcedit, but with difficulties. Still can to edit
fstab, however.

But, I can't to install grub to boot sdb root from the sda MBR.

Any advices will be appreciated!

Use installation CD of the Debian.

Boot with it typing at boot prompt: rescue.

Choose the .../part4 where is your

When came to the Rescue operations, choose to run a shell on this

Here you mount if you have to your /usr partition with: 'mount /usr'

Run the command: 'grub-install /dev/sda' and 'update-grub'.

Then Ctrl + Alt + Del and remove your installation CD and reboot.

You should now to get the Grub menu.

I think that that this geometry isn't compliant with the other OS

for root. Maybe you should also try etherwake?

Maybe I don't understand the description of wakeonlan:

print listed is Generic Printer, and trying to print to it does not
make a job appear in the KDE Print Jobs dialog. Needless to say,

In the Help of Openoffice menu there is an answer:
You must use spadmin from the command prompt,

bootcd, boocdwrite, kernel with CD support built in

2008-01-26 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

I want to use bootcd to write my Debian system onto a CD.

That CD want then use to install this system on my old Toshiba laptop.

The laptop requires other kernel, then my Pentium 4 machine.

I think I must to build a custom kernel for this pourpose.

I red man bootcdwrite and there stand this:
It is important that the kernel can access the cdrom on the system,
where you want to boot from the CD, without having to load any modules.
(Because to load modules from CD, the kernel must have access to
CD before).
If this is not the case you have first to create a new kernel with
CD-support built in.

I have installed 2.6.18-5-686 SMP linux-image.

I searched in config-2.6.18-5-686 file for the CD support line, but
not shore whether
I finded it.
Is it the following lines?

CONFIG_IDE=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=m

Symple method to transfer some packages from Desktop system to laptop Debian Etch system?

2008-01-26 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

I have a Desktop Debian GNU/Linux Etch with network connection,
and a laptop with installed only Debian GNU/Linux from netinstall.iso,
but laptop has not network connection.

I downloaded this netinst.iso and I want not to download any more
CD iso files.

Is it a method how to copy some more debian packages from
my desktop Debian Etch to laptop Debian Etch, say with USB drive?

I can't use apt-zip on laptop system because the netinst.iso CD does
not have apt-zip package.

The bootcd application can write only the whole system to laptop, but
I want not this to do.

Are there any other symple method to transfer some packages from

Any advice will be appreciated!

My crystal ball tells me that your drive is mounted with the `noexec'
option (this is the default for user-mountable devices). You need to
mount /media/usb0 with the `exec' option, like this:

 # mount -o exec /media/usb0

You need to be root to to this, but you can also specify the `exec'

I am using usbmount, so I must edit usbmount.conf. Yes, there was a noexec

 Then execute

installing packages from iso file

2008-01-21 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

I installed Debian Etch on a PC box with netinstall CD.

Now I want to remove CD driver from this box.

But I want before that to copy the netisntall.iso file
to HDD on that box.

So, when I have removed the CD drive, I want that,
that apt can use this iso file to install some packages.

How can I do that?

I try Google, but cant find a solution.

I think I must first to mount these netinstall.iso with
loop device:
mount -o loop -t iso9660 netinstall.iso /mnt/iso

but this is not the right way because I want to automate
this, so I think I must edit fstab for this issue:

/dev/lo /media/cdrom0 iso9660 loop0 0

Then I must run 'apt-cdrom add', so I run it:

LANG=en_EN sudo apt-cdrom add

Success!

Well, I think I find a solution, but what do you think,
am I right?

  1. Place your second harddisk to another bus (or plug it on over an
usb-sata adapter) OR Remove in ~ /etc/mdadm the second disk.

can't you just remove the second disk from mdadm and be done? I guess
you should turn off the raid portions of the boot by

 update-rc.d -f mdadm-raid remove

I've not tested this, so buyer beware.

Before that it is good maybe to edit fstab like bellow.

If I mark too many packages, it happen that that aptitude can't

If what you asked for really worked, then you would loose the main
benefit of aptitude: keeping track of shifting dependancies and cruft
controll. Everything would appear to be automatically installed.

I just want to reinstall everything installed on that system with one
command.

It is cut, not awk.

Vá: awk FIELDWIDTHS howto?

2008-01-09 Thread Paul Csanyi
2008/1/9, Daniel Mahoney [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I think I'm missing something here. Why are you doing the FIELDWIDTHS
thing when you can just split on whitespace? Won't something like:

 aptitude search ~i | awk '{print $2}'
 give you what you want?

No.
The records for awk are like these lines, derived from
'aptitude search ~i' :

...
i cpio- GNU cpio -- a program to manage archives
i A cpp - The GNU C preprocessor (cpp)
i A cpp-4.1 - The GNU C preprocessor
...

So, (from the abowe example)
in the 1. record:
the 1. field is 'i', the 2. field is 'cpio', the 3. field is '-', etc.

in the 2. record:
the 1. field is 'i', the 2. field is 'A', the 3. field is 'cpp', etc.

in the 3. record:
the 1. field is 'i', the 2. field is 'A', the 3. field is 'cpp-4.1', etc.

So the command here:
aptitude search ~i | awk '{print $1 $2 $3 $4}' \
foltelepitett_debian_csomagok

give to me these:

i cpio - GNU
i A cpp -
i A cpp-4.1 -

and the command:
aptitude search ~i | awk '{print $2}' \
foltelepitett_debian_csomagok

give to me these:

cpio
A
A

So, why don't works FIELDWIDTHS as I would to expect?
If I give to awk { FIELDWIDTHS = 4 32} why give to me these:

cpio
A
A

with command:
aptitude search ~i | awk '{ FIELDWIDTHS = 4 32}\
{print $2}' foltelepitett_debian_csomagok

Your Xorg.0.log looks fine to me. So what exactly happens when you

When I type startx then it runs and on the end I get a blank screen

This was yesterday.

Today I purge the wdm, xserver-xorg, and install xserver-xorg

Paul, if you want help, you need to be patient. THe behavior above is
normal. Your X was working, you just didn't have a WM set as the
 default, or setup in ~/.xinitrc.

  This was yesterday.

Today I purge the wdm, xserver-xorg, and install xserver-xorg
  but without wdm again.

why did you purge it? it was working.

I try now to get X Window with startx, but without success.

Again, in *what way* are you not having success? you Xorg.0.log again
looks ust fine. You are still facing the same problem as above.

Please answer the following questions and I'll help you.

WHat window manager do you want to use?

I want to use Window Maker.

What is the output of (as root):

 update-alternatives --config x-window-manager

There is only 1 program which provides x-window-manager
(/usr/bin/wmaker). Nothing to configure.

you'll need to just press enter to keep it as currently set.

Do you have a ~/.xinitrc or ~/.xsession file? if so, what are the
 contents?

I have not .xinitrc

less ~/.xsession is:

#!/bin/bash

##[Desktop Entry]
#Encoding=hu_HU
#Name=Window maker
#Comment=This session logs you into Window Maker
#Exec=/usr/bin/wmaker
## no icon yet, only the top three are currently used
#Icon=
#Type=Application

okay. interesting, my understanding is that *should* just work, but
 regardless here is one solution:

create a new ~/.xinitrc file and put in it the following:

 exec /usr/bin/wmaker
 x-terminal-emulator

save the file and try startx.

you *should* get a working wmaker session and if wmaker somehow fails,
you'll instead get whatever the default x-terminal-emulator is in a
 bare X session.

Either way, based on the logs you've sent, and the information you've
provided, you should be up and running.

Yes, my problem is solved, thanks to you! :)

I want to upgrade my kernel, but in the repository can't find
subsequent linux-image.

What can I to do to get and install subsequent kernel on Etch
than linux-image-2.6.18 on debian way?

Any advices will be appreciated!

You are aware that Debian Stable kernels are continuously updated with
security patches, yes? Is there other functionality you need in later
 kernels?

I have ASUS P5N-E SLI NVIDIA motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and MSI
nVidia NX7600GT videocard.

When I use nvidia driver, the X Window freeze and I can only to reset my
PC box.

I search for solution and find here advices, but not the solution:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498

I did the following from there:
boot the system with pci=nommconf idle=poll maxcpus=1 kernel parameters
I edit the grub/menu.lst like:
# kopt=root=/dev/md2 ro pci=nommconf idle=poll maxcpus=1

Is it OK?
I don't know how to make certain that these parameters are set up indeed?

I edit xorg.conf like in the Section Device:
Option NvAGP 0
to see if this eliminates the instability, but did not.

So, my system crash frequently. I hope so that I can somehow to solve
this problem.

Wich Debian system with Intel Core 2 CPU: i386 or amd64?

2007-12-23 Thread Paul Csanyi
Hello!

I have installed Debian Etch on my hardware with Intel Core 2 CPU.

In the repository I have linux-image-2.6.18-5-amd64 and now I have it
installed.

I think I can use it with Debian Etch system, and don't must download and
install the debian amd64 distribution, right?

For what reason should I download and install debian amd64 distribution?

unless you are doing memory intensive calculations or have a lot of
memory (I would say that probably 3+ GB although some say more), you're
probably better of with the i386 distribution.

OK but I try to use Debian Etch i386 arch with linux-image-2.6-amd64.
I think I must use this linux-image because of my Intel Core 2 CPU.

So I try to install nvidia driver for my nvidia card (from lspci)

Check out the gEDA package. It includes an PCB board

Or try KiCAD.
It is easier than gEDA because of the GUI that KiCAD uses.

AFAIK kino can only use dv files, so in converts any imported
files to dv before processing. your problem now seems to be, that
 you can't write in /dfat32/Iskola/SketchUp video folveteleim/
please check weather it is mounted read-only, has the wrong
permissions or has no free space left.

Now I have moved the SketchUp_folvetelem.mov file in my
/home/username/Kino/ directory and try to import it from there
in to the Kino, but get the same error message:
Failed to load media file /home/csanyipal/Kino/sketchup.avi.dv

The /home/ directory have 7.21 GB free space left,
it is mounted read/write, and
/home/username/Kino/ have usual permissons: 755.

Are there some application that can to convert avi, or mov
format in to the dv format?

Yes, on my Debian Etch system apcupsd start at boot.

 I edited the
 /etc/default/apcupsd

 to

 ISCONFIGURED=yes

mine is already setup with that line.

I have the file here:

/etc/init.d/apcupsd

and I can run it as root with

# /etc/init.d/apcupsd start

or restart, or stop

If you have the Debian GNU/Linux Etch system, you should to reinstall
apcupsd with

# aptitude reinstall apcupsd

command!
