Re: non-free software
Hi there, I usually stay away from these types of discusion but I thought I had better step in on this one and provide some possible solutions. Most people seem to want to be able to get hold of the the non-free software however not everyone has access to a connection which is fast or reliable. Like me I prefer to by a CD every now and again and update my system via a CD. I also see the point of Debian in which they only want to put free software on there CD. One solution suggested by someone would be to start a commercial release of Debian. I don't think that that is a very economic way of doing things. What I do suggest is producing another CD in which we get the authors of the software to allows there package to packaged onto a shareware type CD. As the authors of the packages themselfs gave permision to package there software on the CD there would be no legal problems with the CD. It will also allow there software to be distubuted on a wider base. This second CD could then be sold as an extra package or it could be bundled together in a CD pack with Debian. This CD could then also allow commercial companys to place trial or BETA software for Linux on it promoting commercial support for Linux. These are some brief ideas that I have. If anyone feels that this is a good idea please contact me and I will help in every way. At the present point I don't have the equipment to implement things like this. Hi there, I know that I can get Linux to emulate a NT server on ther network using Samba but now my million dollar question can it emulate a Novell server with NDS. If there is a package which can support this please coule you point me in the right direction. Thanks, -- Robert Moody Sysop of Programmer's Test BBS. Gerardo Lamastra wrote: Well, we use a Linux powered server which is tied to the APC SmartUPS 1000 and everything works right. I think you should not have any problem to configure the UPS; the genpowerd daemon is used, with the following command line: /sbin/genpowerd /dev/ttyS1 apc-advanced Thanks that solves a lot of my problems. StarOffice and Debian.
Hi there, I am wondering if anyone knows of a company which sells both the Debian version of Linux and StarOffice. I am asking as it would be easier for me to purchase both at the same time. Any web sites etc. would be very helpfull. Thanks in advance, -- Robert Moody Sysop of Programmer's Test BBS. Re: Netscape 3.04 Bus Error
Hi there, Hamish Moffatt wrote: What files do you have under (from memory) /usr/linux-libc1/X11? Some missing symlinks will stop Netscape from starting properly, with a bus error or segfault. Now thats actually makes some sense. When I orignially installed Linux I had something goes wrong and some important links were not made. I sometimes still get these messages popping up and I manage to create the symlinks to the nessecary files. However everything runs right in the mean time. I was hoping by upgrading the system I would get rid of most of these problems but I have picked them up. Now that I have learn't more about Linux I am able to patch them as they come up. ;) Not a problem I will do a ldd and see what links are missing. If that doesn't help then I will get back to you. Sometimes I just need to be pointed in the right direction. ;) Thanks, -- Robert Moody Sysop of Programmer's Test BBS. Netscape 3.04 Bus Error
Hi there, I was wondering if any of you have come across Netscape 3.04 exiting with a Bus error. It is not a critical problem just every now and again it decides to exit for me. Unix qulifications...
Hi there, This might be a little off topic but it is on the subject of Unix based system and I thought you helpfull Debian users might be able to help me. What I want to know is if there are any Unix based qulifications, similar to Novells CNA, CNE and Microsofts MCSE. If there are could someone point me in the right direction. The reason why I am asking is I have been running Linux for just over a year and the Debian release for more than half of that period, and belive it or not it is growing on me. Leaving College in the next few weeks make me think that maybe I would like to go into the Unix Administation field... Maybe a Linux qualification could be setup. An interesting thought that actually. Does anyone think that will take off? I hope so... XView
Hi there, I have run into a few small annoying problems. At them moment I am trying to figure out why some programs say they can't load certain libarys. In particular on the Open Look side. Everything installs nicely etc. All the libarys are there, but it gives me the following error everytime I try to run cmdtool and a few other Open Look programs. cmdtool: can't load library 'libxview.so.3'. This is just an annoying problem which I never found while I was running under an older version of Slackware. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be a very happy chappy. ;) Thanks again, Robert. -- +---+ | Robert Moody Sysop of Programmer's Test BBS. | | Running well on Debian ver 1.2 Kernel 2.0.27 | | http://www.zsd.co.za/~ptest/ | | e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]| +---+ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
