How do I remove/unload isapnp?

2000-09-22 Thread STrandahl
I suspect that isapnp may be conflicting with the 5.9c ALSA drivers I'm
trying to load. How do I configure the system so that I save my
configuration files, but isapnp doesn't run?

I'm hoping that ALSA can't configure the drivers because isapnp already
activated the card. However, if I'm wrong, I don't want to lose the work I
spent configuring isapnp.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Help! xdm not starting at boot

1999-08-27 Thread STrandahl
I was able to stop xdm from running at startup by:
1) running Debian setup from the CD and pressing ALT + F2 on the first screen
2) mounted my root drive so I could move and copy files
3) moved /etc/init.d/xdm to my home directory for temporary storage
4) unmounted the root drive
5) rebooted the machine
6) reconfigured X using XF86Setup
7) copied the xdm file back to /etc/init.d

Thanks for your help,
Steve T.

Help! xdm not starting at boot

1999-08-26 Thread STrandahl
I have xdm configured to start when the system boots up. I changed my X
configuration and now the system is in a loop trying to start X and failing.
I am able to boot from my Debian CD, but don't know what to do when I get
there.

How can I:
1) prevent xdm from trying to run at startup OR
2) get in and edit the X configuration file manually -- ideally, I would like
to restore the backup XF86Setup created. Unfortunately, I didn't write down
its location and I don't know where to copy it.

Re: Setting up Debian with sound

1999-07-23 Thread STrandahl
I have sound! I am now able to play a CD through the speakers on my PC. I
currently have a working boot diskette with sound compiled into the kernel.
I had several problems which turned out to be due to bad diskettes. The next
step will be fine-tuning the process. As you suspected, I learned quite a
bit during the whole process.

Thank you for all your help and encouragement
Steve

From the docs, it appears that my sound card has a good chance of working.
I'm going to give compiling the kernel a shot (since I don't have spare $
lying around). I'm going to try to find the kernel package on my Debian CD.

I haven't found any reference to RTFineM in the documentation. You mentioned
it in your initial response. Please let me know what I need to do in that
regard.

Thanks,
Steve

Setting up Debian with sound

1999-07-12 Thread STrandahl
I have set up hamm on my IBM Aptiva (model 2153-E2U). I would like to get
the built-in sound card working, but it appears I will have to recompile the
kernel. Since I am a LINUX newbie, this is not a trivial task.

My question is basically this - Is there an easier way and if not, has anyone
gotten this to work on this hardware? I would hate to spend days on this
only to discover that the sound card is not Sound Blaster compatible enough.

Thanks!
