upgrading Xfree86
Hi, I am running Debian 2.1 and have X version 3.3.3.2 which doesn't seem to fully support my Trident Providia 9685 video card, so I wanted to upgrade to X version 3.3.3.1. Can anyone please tell me what line I should add to my apt-get source file so that I can run an upgrade of X? Thanks for any help. Shawn Nguyen
wine with windows NT
Hi, Has anyone been able to get wine to work with windows NT? If so, can you help me with the setup? Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated. Shawn Nguyen
wine configuration
Hi, I just installed the potato version of wine and have put my window mount point into fstab in order to run the wineconf program. Unfortunately I keep getting an error saying Cannot read ./wine.ini and I don't know how to fix this problem, can anyone help me? Thanks for any help. Shawn Nguyen
printing in balsa
Hi, I've finally gotten gnome to run with enlightenment beautifully but I can't seem to print in Balsa, am I missing some kind of configuration that I need to do in order to get the printing to work? If anyone can help me with this I'd really appreciate it. Shawn Nguyen
printing in kde kmail
Hi, I am running slink and have kde desktop setup and running nicely. However, I can't seem to get any printing done in it. It seems that when I print in kmail or with the kde web browser I get a whole bunch of ascii characters output into my printer and subsequently printed. I have no clue as to how to even begin to fix this because the documentation for kde doesn't say much about printing. I am using apsfilter as my printer filter and it works great with all the other program on my system that doesn't have anything to do with kde like netscape and wordperfect and etc. Anyway, does anyone have any idea what I should do in order to correct this problem? Any clue would be appreciated. Shawn Nguyen
gnome working correctly?
Hi, I've gone ahead and upgraded my gnome installation to the potato deb from the web site and have discovered that it produces a slew of error upon exiting from X windows with gnome running. I'm running the exec gnome-session in the file /etc/X11/window-managers and also in my home directory within the file .xinitrc. Gnome comes up fine and all but gmc appear to be buggy when running, when I try to exit gmc, well everything is frozen solid. In any case the error says it can't find the Help file Null or something like that. Even without gmc problem when I am exiting gnome I get all kinds of messages from X window about gdk and other things. Has anyone experienced the same sort of things or am I the only one? Also, I finally got KDE to run perfectly by using the line /usr/bin/X11R6/kde in /etc/X11/window-managers instead of from my home directory .xinitrc file. I think I might be doing something wrong but it works since it hasn't given me any more error upon exiting as it was doing before like gnome. I wonder if anyone will ever churn out the new deb with the new gnome stuff. I am guessing that when they call it version 1.06 that it is a stable release instead of all these alpha and betas prior to it including what I am running now which is .99 I guess I will have to start learning about debian development. Thanks for any insight into the gnome situation above... Shawn Nguyen
KDE
Hi, I am trying to install KDE but running into problem. What's happening is that when I run make it says it can't find the command g++ to compile. This is during the Qt compilation. I tried to install g++ but I'm getting a weird conflict a sort of catch 22 if you will. Apparently g++ depends on libstd-2.9-dev which depends on libst-6-dev (or something like that) but libst-6-dev conflict with libstd-2.9-dev. What's going on here? Am I doing something strange or do I have to overcome this apparent weird conflict somehow? Thanks for any answer at all. Shawn nguyen
Xfree86 and Hard drive disk space
Hi, I have seen a lot of messages lately on this list about the Xfree86 version 3.3.3.1 as being better because it seems to fix a lot of the bug in the previous version. I was wondering if Debian is looking to update their Xfree86 debian package to this newer version, when I looked in potato it doesn't look like that has been done. Also, is there some kind of utility on Debian that I could use to check my hard drive space? I know about the utilities to check my RAM but haven't been able to find anything about hard drive. Thanks for any help. Shawn
irc help
Hi, I am using Zircon IRC to try to hook up to irc.debian.org but I can't seem to get there. Is there something special that I need to do in order to open the link to irc.debian.org? Does it work? Shawn
error running make
Hi, I downloaded imwheel 0.9.5 and ran the make command and got an error. I was wondering if you knew what I am missing. It looks like when it's trying to look for some X library and other stuff. jax.h:6: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory jax.h:7: X11/Xutil.h: No such file or directory jax.h:8: X11/Xresource.h: No such file or directory So of course it doesn't let me install imwheel. Am I missing something that it needs? Any help would be appreciated. Shawn Nguyen
[Fwd: star office]
---BeginMessage--- I just have a question. I used the SVGA server but X frozed on me. Do I have to set that line down below in order for it to not freeze? The weird thing is that when I use the S3 server it doesn't freeze X, it only freezes StarOffice. So I went back to my S3 server. Also, I discovered that using the SVGA server I could only use 8bpp color in X. Meanwhile I am using 32bpp in my S3 server, is this correct if you use SVGA??? If so, I don't know that I would want to use SVGA since it deprecate my color by so much. In the meantime I am able to use StarOffice, however, I can't use mail, that's all that's wrong with it. I can use everything else as far as I can tell anyway. Maybe I should try their fix. Has anyone experienced anything weird when using this fix with their S3 server??? Any advice would be appreciated. Shawn Daniel Mashao wrote: On Tue, 30 Mar 1999, Shawn Nguyen wrote: I am using an S3 graphics card. I guess I'm out of luck huh? Thanks for the info though even though I find it kind of strange that that would be the case. I guess I should do some research to see if there's any kind of fix for this problem. No you are not out of luck. There are two things you can do. Both of them easy. 1. Use the SVGA drivers instead of the S3 drivers for X11. 2. (The simplest) Define a variable in your start-up files eg. .tcshrc of .bashrc. setenv SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50 true or export SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50=true and everything will be fine. How do I know, because they mentioned this some where in their installation documentation and I too have an S3 Virge card. You will love this Star Office its faster and better than 4.0 and now I feel like I want to buy a copy. With 4.0 I felt like it was so useless I was glad I did not cough up some money for it, but I am going to buy the Windows version just so I can get my hand on their manuals. /--/ Daniel J. Kensington Scroll Mouse
Hi, I've got a kensington scroll mouse and was wondering if there's anyway to get it to work at all in X? If not, is there a mouse out there that I could buy which would let me use that feature on it in X? I guess I am too used to using the scroll mouse and I find it a little more than irksome to keep having to manually scroll through web pages and such. I guess my laziness has got the better of me. Thanks for any advice at all. Shawn
Star office S3 server fix
Hi, Does anyone know where I can download the S3 video server fix? I've been trying to look for it but didn't have any luck looking on the star office site. Thanks, Shawn
star office
Hi, I am having some problem with Star Office 5.0, could someone shed some light on the situation? Apparently when I try to update the mail box Star Office start to freeze up my computer. What's happening is that my CPU is being overloaded when Star Office does this updating of the e-mail. I have a K6 AMD 300 MHZ with 64 MB of RAM, I wonder if that's not enough for something as resource hungry as Star Office? Shawn
security issue
Hi, I have a question regarding security issue with Debian and Linux in general. By now everyone has probably heard about the new Mellissa virus. I know that this doesn't affect Linux because it is related to M$ products only. However, I just wondered if anything of this sort could happen to a Linux system? I know that Linux in general is actually quite secure, but what makes it so? Just some information about Linux security issue would be appreciated. Thank you for any kind of info. Shawn
Installing Slink
Hi, For those who aren't aware of it. When upgrading or installing from Hamm to Slink you start with the binary disk 1 to boot-up on a new installation. After getting the system running, use dselect to install the rest of the system. In slink, you have to put the 2nd CD in first and then do Access, Update, Select, then install. You have to put the 2nd CD in first so that all the packages can be picked up by dselect. If you put in the first CD as I did the first time around, dselect will only pick up 1150 packages which is incomplete and you don't get to switch CD during installation if you do this. On the other hand if you put the 2nd CD in first then use Install in dselect it will tell you to put in whatever CD is needed when it does the installation of the packages. Shawn
staroffice question
Hi, I am thinking about getting Star Office for my Debian Box but I had a question. I noticed that there is a Star Office 5.0 edition available from the star office site. Do I have to download the older version (3.1) of Star Office in order for it to work with the Debian Installer? If anyone has any experience with this I'd just like some advice. Thanks in advance for any help. Shawn
Netscape problem
Hi, Awhile back I saw something on here about a netscape problem I am getting now. I guess I should have saved that message. Anyway, it's got to do with netscape not being able to open the libXpm.so.4 library or soemthing like that. Does anyone knows what I need to do to get it to run? Thanks a lot for any help. Shawn
Debian 2.1 Installation a mess
Hi, I just got my slink CD in the mail. Unfortunately it is not going very well. I think that I am doing it right. 1.) Boot up from 1st CD. 2.) Install base and set up everything fine. 3.) Get to install the rest of the system in dselect. 4.) Put 2nd CD into CD-ROM drive. 3.) Update. 4.) Put 1st CD-ROM in drive. 5.) Install. 6.) Put 2nd CD-ROM back in. 7.) Install. 8.) Dselect return message, installation OK. 9.) Try to set up system i.e. 10.) Finds out that GPM can't be set up because doesn't look like serial module is running. 11.) Tried to set up X, same problem, since the mouse doesn't work. Apparently, there seems to be some kind of new changes to the serial deal that I don't quite understand I guess. I remember on Hamm that when I boot up my system it would try to look for my serial ports, it's not doing that in slink it seems like. This seems silly, I must be doing something seriously wrong here. HELP??? Thanks, for any advice. Shawn
gnome installation
Hi, Thanks for the help on the gnome installation. I guess I just had to restart the system. When I did so, everything seemed to have worked fine. Shawn
Printer Setup
Hello, Thanks for the advice on magicfilter. I really tried to use it but I gave up. I went and downloaded the APSFilter package instead from the web and used it to set up my HP laserjet 1100 printer. I finally got it working. I wished that debian had included this package, or at least incoporated the driver filter from it. It seems that this package had more filters for more printers. Shawn
Gnome Installation
Hi, I've just installed gnome on my system but nothing seems to be happening. I am running the WindowMaker Manager. The tool box shows some gnome stuff like the gnome panel but when I click on it nothing happens, it's the same with everything else. Does anyone know where I can get information as to how I can do a correct install of gnome. I have the gnome use guide printed up but it doesn't cover installation. Any advice would be of great help. Thank you. Shawn
printing problem
Hi, Well, I guess I was wrong about resolving my problem with my printer. I tried the HPLJ4L filter and it worked, unfortunately not quite as well as I thought. Apparently it prints up very nicely. Only problem is that when it gets to the end of the file it cuts off the last page. Here is what happens: I tells it to print a four page document and it prints the first three pages rather nicely. But on the fourth page the printer stops and I have to manually press the power button once and release it for it to print the last page. However, it print this last page with some text missing at the end. I don't think that the filter I have is cutting it. Does anyone knows of a filter for my HP LaserJet 1100, or failing that can anyone help me to write a filter for this filter so that I will be able to finalize my debian setup. At least until I try something more adventurous next time. Thanks for any advice. Shawn
Printer Setup
Hi, I am trying to set up my printer on Debian, I've got Hamm. I've tried to used the Magicfilter package and got the printer to print. But it seems to be cutting off some of the text at the top and bottom and also the printer will not automatically feed paper, I have to press the button in front to get it to start printing. I am sure this has got something to do with the fact that I am using an incorrect filter for the magicfilter package. I have a HP Laserjet 1100, has anyone have any luck setting this printer up? If anyone knows what printer to use, etc. in magicfilter I would appreciate any hint. Thanks for any advice. Shawn
Re: Printer Setup
Thanks for the advice. I used the ljet4l filter and it seemed to have done the trick. I guess I will have to wait for the filter for the 1100 filter to get release at a later date to have it be more specific for my exact printer. I wish I knew what I was doing so I can write one myself and contribute it to debian development. Well, after about 3 weeks of hard work and maybe 40 to 50 install of Linux (I kept switching back and forth between Debian and Red Hat) I think I have finally gotten the hang of things. Thanks to everyone on the group that have answered all of my questions. Oh, and I definitely think Debian is a great Distros because of the flexibility that it presents (lots of packages). Config are simple once you figure it out. Shawn Bob Nielsen wrote: The Laserjet 1100 is a very new printer and there is no driver written especially for it. The ljet4 or ljet4l filters are probably the closest. There is a site listing ghostscript drivers for various printers http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/printer.html, but this does not yet mention the LJ 1100. apt-get question
Hi, I've heard a lot about apt-get in slink but I have a question about it. In hamm, it was such a task to install a package in dselect because it rolls through every single package on the dist. Does slink resolve this problem and more specifically, is apt-get the resolution? Thanks, Shawn
Re: apt-get question
Yes, I mean that after selecting install, it check every single packages. David Gaudine wrote: I've heard a lot about apt-get in slink but I have a question about it. Does slink resolve this problem and more specifically, is apt-get the resolution? What exactly do you mean it rolls through every single package on the dist? If you mean what it sounds like, you only have to roll through every package if you don't know the name (or part of the name) of the package, otherwise just type /searchstring (and then \ to continue the same search) Or do you mean the fact that after you select install you have to wait while it checks the list internally? I admit that was a problem when I ran debian on a slow system that did everything from network drives. -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] /dev/null
Bootup path?
Hi, I was looking in my Hamm Dist. for the file which has all the path to look for executable program when it bootup. Can anyone help me? Also, when I tried to install Netscape it told me to install motifnls which I did but afterward it said that I have to set my XNLSPATH environment variable to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/nls does anyone knows what this is all about? Slink and Hamm?
Hi, Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am new to Debian, what is the slink and hamm dist. everyone is talking about. I think that I have the hamm version because when I installed Debian on my CD it says /hamm/hamm or something like that. Is there some kind of significant differences between the two and if so what are they? I guess I am just wanting to be informed. Thanks for any explaination. Shawn
Book on Xwindow
Hi, Does anyone know a good book for Xwindow? I looked up O'reilly and they seems to have two of them. One for MIT version and one for Motif. I have no idea which one I should get so if anyone can recommend a book I would appreciate it. And also, if you could clarify about that MIT and Motif situation. Thanks. Shawn
