The use of source cds.
Dear Debian Group, I would like to know exactly what purpose the source cds serve and who would need to use them. I will only be using Debian for things like word processing, email, the internet, etcetera and wouldn't be doing any development or performing any major alterations to the debian distribution. My question then is do you think that I have any need for purchasing the source cds along with the main cds? Thank you for your time, Ry
Connecting to my ISP.
Dear Debian Group, My problem today is that I am sometimes unable to connect to my ISP. Sometimes I am able to connect, but then many times I am not. The difference occurs immediately after the line: -- Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt. Some times the prompt is given and then WvDial connects fine, but then sometimes it is not and the problem occurs. There is nothing that I do differently and when I am unable to connect I am unable to connect for a very long time even when I try over and over many times. I am unsure as to whether it has to do with how WvDial and my modem communicate with my ISPs modem or whether it is the sole responsibility of my ISP. When I connect with my Windows 98 box and its modem I never encounter a problem. I have trouble only with my Debian box and modem. I have written out exactly what appears on my monitor: debian:~# wvdial -- WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.14 -- Initializing modem. -- Sending: ATZ ATZ OK -- Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 C1 D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0 OK -- Modem initialized. -- Sending: ATDT 9702477798 -- Waiting for carrier. ATDT 9702477798 CONNECT 115200 -- Carrier detected. Waiting for prompt. -- Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best. -- Starting pppd at Sun Apr 8 16:34:42 2001 -- PPP daemon has died! Netscape
Dear Debian Group, My question today is whether the complete Netscape Navigatorand Communicatorpackages come on theofficial Debian 6 cd set or whether I have to download them from the non-free directory on the Debian ftp site. Thank you, Ry
Running the Netscape installer.
Dear Debian Group, I am trying to get Netscape on my system. I have the installer on my system configured correctly with the archive file from the Netscape ftp site (it extracted correctly from the /tmp location). The Netscape icons came up as part of the menu and main start bar but whenever I click on them nothing happens (I was told that the installer program downloads Netscape from the Netscape ftp site). I have run the Gtop program and it is not running in the background. What am I doing wrong and how should I fix it to get it working. Thank you for your time and energy, Ry
Installing communicator.
Hello, My question now is: how do I get Communicator on my sytem in order to run apt-get install communicator? Currently when I try to run it it sends back the response: Package communicator has no available version, but exits in the database. This typically means the package was mentioned in a dependency and never uploaded, has been obsoleted or is not available with the contents of sources.list E: Package communicator has no istallation candidate I have the Debian official 6 cd set and have all of them included in dselect (or apt or whatever the base is) from the istallation of Debian when it asked for cds to scan. I'm pretty sure that communicator is not included on any of those cds and so am thinking that I have to download it first via ftp from the Debian ftp archives. Which package would I actually download from there (for communicator) and then how do I get it included in the sources.list. Thank you for your time and energy, Ry P.S. Connecting my browsers to Wvdial and the internet.
Dear Debian Group, I am having problems with my browsers connecting to my internet connection as user: root. I have tried both Mozilla and Lynx (though not Netscape as I cannot get the archive files without an internet connection) and have encountered the same problem with both. When I dial up my ISP with Wvdial, I am able to connect and everything seems to be fine. However, when I try to do anything with that connection through the two browsers they both say that the site is unavailable no matter what the site is (or at least any non-local site, they can access local sites), and immediately too. Its almost like they cannot communicate with Wvdial or something. There is never any activity with the modem at all. I'm pretty sure that it isn't my ISP either because previous to Debian I used SuSE and when I used Lynx and Wvdial under SuSE they both worked fine (they were also both older versions as opposed to the ones I am using now under Debian). Please advise. One the people in your group suggested that it could be that my ISP uses a proxy server and so would require a modification of the Lynx configuration files. It is true that my ISP uses a proxy server but when I did what another person suggested in changing the configuration files it did not fix the problem. I'm also confused that I was able to use Lynx and Wvdial before under SuSE without any tweaking. Thank you very much, Ry
Setting lynx up to deal with a proxy server
Dear Debian Group, My ISP uses a proxy server and so prevents Lynx from working properly (or at least that was a possiblility that someone else suggested). I know for sure that my ISP uses a proxy server as they told me themselves. Please tell me what information I need from my ISP and then where to change it in the Lynx configuration files. Thank you very much, Ry P.S. I'm also curious as to why Lynx doesn't work, only now after I am using it under Debian. When I used it under SuSE (Lynx was also an older version when I used it under SuSE) it worked fine with the same proxy server and ISP without any editing of the configuration files.
running lynx
Dear Debian Group, I am unable to run lynx on the Debian 2.2r2 system I recently installed. After I run wvdial, connect to my ISP, hit cntrl z and then type the command lynx at the command prompt (all as root) I get the following errors (I have also set http://www.debian.org as my start page for lynx during the initial configuration, is it incorrect to have a remote host as my startpage?): debian:~# lynx Looking up www.debian.org Unable to locate remote host www.debian.org. Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host. lynx: Can't access startfile http://www.debian.org/ debian:~# Please advise me as to how to get lynx working. Thank you very much for your time and energy. Thank you, Ry

Creating a Logical Volume Group during the setup of Debian.
Hello, I would like to know how to create a Logical Volume Group on four hard-disks combining four partitions at the time I partition during an installation of Debian 2.2r2. Thank you, Ry
Partition size for / when using a Logical Volume Group for /usr.
Hello, I would like to know what some of your opinions are as to what size I should make the / partition when I have /usr as a separate Logical Volume Group partition. Thank you, Ry
Combining disks in one virtual partition.
Hello, My question for you all is whether or not you can join the partitions of several small hard disks together to form one large-contiuous-virtual root partition. I have quite a few small hard disks but none that are really big enough to be of much service to me. Thank you, Ry
Minimum RAM Requirement.
