Default font in URXVT

2004-12-17 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
I want the default font of urxvt to be xft:Bitstream
Vera Sans Mono:pixelsize=17 (which works fine when I
pass that to the -fn argument).

I put the line

URxvt*font: xft:Bitstream Vera Sans Mono:pixelsize=17

in ~/.Xdefaults as suggested from other resources
online but doesn't seem to work. When typing urxvt
still opens urxvt with its own default font.

Am I missing something here ? TIA

Forward all mail in mbox to new email address

email those to myself.

Thanks for the tip on the the bounce feature in mutt.
It is what I want except if if I tag all the one I
want then bounce ends up giving a 'big' message
contains all those mails instead of individual one.

Matlab performance on Linux vs Windows

2004-11-27 Thread Thanhvu Nguyen
Hi, I hope my question is not too off topic here since Debian is a popular
choice in scientific computing lab and therefore hopefully someone will
have experience with Matlab running on it. Also since I am considering
getting Matlab 7.0 on my Debian home machine so probably this is the right
group to ask in.

My question is about the Performance of Matlab running on Linux vs on
Windows. I have seen Matlab 6.5 running on Linux *twice* as slow as on
Windows, e.g a 30 minute routine runs on Matlab 6.5 Windows take an hour
or more on Matlab 6.5 Linux (same machine specs of course)

What's your experience ? how is the performance of Matlab 7.0 on Linux vs
Windows ?

Thanks in advance,

It happens as well when you launch nautilus from xfce4 or when you
have a gnome session opened and you open another one by VNC or NX.

So it is still a bug similar to the previous one although not as
severed. It's not completely fixed. I don't use the Gnome environment,
I just use some of its apps, including Nautilus.
I found a work around, that is start gnome-setting-daemon before
entering wmaker. That will fix the problem but the fonts setting (e.g
size) are now followed the gnome-settings that are set via
gnome-control-panel, no longer default gtk. Anyway I'll just continue
to wait for the nautilus bug to be completely fixed.

Icon bug in Nautilus (SARGE) still not fixed ?

2004-10-02 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
Back in mid June, there was a bug in Nautilus from Sarge which broke all
the icons. I was told by other Sarge users that it already had been
fixed but till now that problem still happens to me. My Sarge system is
up-to-date, it only uses packages from the official Debian apt
repository. The Nautilus version is 2.6.3b-4 . I use Window Maker as
the main window manager and calls Nautilus from WMaker.

Anyone else can acknowledge this problem ?

Depends: xscreensaver-gnome but it is not going to be installed

E: Sorry, broken packages

That's because I uploaded gnome-utils for powerpc, but it had broken
Build-Depends and so didn't build on i386. I just made another upload
which should fix this problem. Give it a day or three to hit the

wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd,

(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use

in dmseg, my cdrw is under hdc but it is actually scd0. So could the
zip drive has some other names under /dev ?

in dmseg, my cdrw is under hdc but it is actually scd0. So could
the zip drive has some other names under /dev ?

You shouldn't need to recompile anything. Just try:

 mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip

substituting /mnt/zip for wherever you want to mount it of course. The
 4 is the important part.

Hello, it still gives the same msg .

# mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /zip
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd4,
or too many mounted file systems
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

Any other ideas ?

Re: Lite On 40x Burner

2002-10-15 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen

don't know about the 40x but the 16/10 works fine I don't really
use this Liteon drive that much to say how reliable it is. Also have a
12/10 Plextor and this one is extremely solid under Linux cdrecord.

Compiling OpenGL on Debian

Hello,

I am trying to compile opengl code and have the following errors

gcc -Wall -I/usr/X11R6/include/ -o cube -L/usr/X11R6/lib cube.o -lX11
-lXi -lXmu -lglut -lGL -lGLU -lm
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.a(glxext.o): In function `__glXGetCurrentContext':
glxext.o(.text+0x1a): undefined reference to `pthread_key_create'
glxext.o(.text+0x31): undefined reference to `pthread_getspecific'

- seems like there's some problem with pthread(?) - anyone programs
openGL ? what do I miss here ?

thanks

Making a bootable rescue CD from a rescue floppy disk

2002-06-28 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
Hello,

My system has just been installed on a HD connected on a Promise66
controller card,a boot floppy has been created at the end, also lilo
was installed in the mbr.

The problem is my Motherboard and the IDe controller, it refused to
boot from either the floppy drive or the Hard drive, it only can boot
via the CD rom. I do not know how to fix this, it is always like this
eversince I bought the Ide controller.

So I am thinking that if I can copy the image from my floppy disk to
the cd, then it's possible that I can boot to the system. But I am
not sure how to copy the content of the Debian boot floppy to a CD and
make that cd bootable.

Any one has any idea on how to do that ? Or any idea why the IDE
controller refuse to boot from its drive and also ignore the floppy
drive.

Thanks in advanced.

Re: How stable is dual head, twin view feature ?

2002-06-25 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
Hi,

but you can tell the Matrox driver that the LCD is there
vs a monitor and see if that cleans it up.

I am not sure what the option to tell it's an LCD is.

What does your config file and your log looklike?

My kernel (2.4.18) is compiled and configured manually, I did enable
dri and matrox (mga.o) support in the kernel as modules. But I notice
that they are never needed - lsmod claims that they aren'tunused.

mga 102480 0 (unused)
agpgart15776 1

But anyway, I am using the mga drivers from Matrox. In my XF86Conf4.
I have these 3 lines that I am not really sure what they do

Section Module
# LoadGLcore # is this needed for matrox ?
Loaddri #
# Loadglx

I have problems with the glx, according to Matrox readme,
it should be on. But when I enable it, I can't start X.

Here's a portion of the X log

(==) MGA(0): Backing store disabled
(==) MGA(0): Silken mouse enabled
(**) MGA(0): DPMS enabled
(II) MGA(0): Using overlay video
(==) MGA(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) [GLX]: Calling GlxExtensionInit

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

- From this, I can tell that DRI is disabled - why?
and something with GLX that crashed the server.

Samba with WinXP

2002-06-11 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
Hello,

I have problem with connecting to the samba server on my Debian box from
a WinXP machine.

I can connect to the samba server from all my other Linux box but I just
can't connect to it from an XP machine. I can see the Debian Samba
server listing in the XP's WorkGroup place. I got a message account
not authorized to log in from this station when I try to connect.

Is there any different setting in WinXP , some registry edit etc ?

Making /home not accessible by outsiders

2002-05-30 Thread ThanhVu Nguyen
Hello during the installation I choose yes when the installer ask if I
want to make user directory accessible by other users (that was the
default). Now I changed my mind, because even /root is readable by
others ...

is there a way to reverse what I have chosen ? reconfigure something ?
Or may be a chmod command that would do the trick ?

thanks

Fetch the sysklogd package ('apt-cache show sysklogd | grep ^Filename:'
shows you the file you need to get from your local Debian mirror) and
install it with 'dpkg --force-confnew sysklogd_1.4.1-10_i386.deb' (or
 whatever the filename is).

This will restore all sysklogd's conffiles to their defaults.
