Anti virus and Firewall
Hi all Debian people, Firstly i am very new to Debian so please excuse me for my lack of understanding. I have recently got a Dedicated server box for my gaming Clan and have had Debian 5 64bit installed on it. Now as we will eventually be using the server for our web site for forums, Emails, sending and receiving files and all other aspects web site related, fast redirect downloading system for game server maps, mods etc., ftp, Big brother bot game server software and game servers of varying games. I am looking for any suggestions regarding Anti virus and firewall software that is suitable with your Debian 5 64bit operating system. Wanting to add as much security as possible to our server to reduce any problems we may encounter. I would like any suggestions as to the best software that can be used either paid for or freeware if you would be so kind. Kind Regards Martin

Hello, When compiling kernel 2.6.13.2 with new nvidiafb I get no console video (blank screen). compiling with no rivafb (no module) get the same as making rivafb in /etc/hotplug/blacklist. I'm olso reciving an error message from chkrootkit but refering to a lkm trojan, for what I have seen its seems to be an error from chkrootkit. Autoactualizacion Debian
Hola, alguien conoce si existe algun comando en debian que te permita actualizarte de manera casi automatica o automatica en el momento que salgan las actualizaciones, o ya de perdida que te avise de actualizaciones criticas y cosas asi? me refiero a algo asi como el informador grafico de fedora up2date o el autoactualizador yumd (segun se hace eso), bueno en realidad la autoactualizacion en debian es algo casi imposible con debconf, aunque si solo vas a actualizar, en teoria no necesitas modificar los parametros del programa actualizado verdad??. Resulta que se tienen dos maquinas una llamada A y otra llamada B, las dos maquinas estan conectadas por red LAN, por razones del destino la maquina A tiene que estar todo el tiempo prendida mientras que la maquina B bien puede estar apagada o prendida de manera indeterminada, no se puede hacer ninguna otra conexion entre ellas mas que ssh, no se permiten otros programas de comunicacion ya sea por dentro de ssh o por fuera, las dos maquinas manejan X, bien, ahora hay una aplicacion grafica en A que yo mismo escribi (no se vale suponer que puedo escribirla en modo texto) la cual se encarga de monitorear cosas de vital importancia, esta aplicacion simplemente no debe de cerrarse nunca, el simple hecho de cerrarse o colgarse implica miles o millones de pesos/euros/dolares/etc... (supongamos que no se cuelga muy seguido) esta aplicacion necesita constante monitorizacion de una y solo una persona (yo/encargado/etc) la cual tambien tiene que estar en dos lugares constantemente para atender asuntos ajenos: en donde esta la maquina A y la maquina B. Ahora viene la pregunta, es posible que esta persona estando en la maquina B pueda establecer una sesion ssh y sin tener que matar a la preciada aplicacion y la pueda abrir/importar/jalar en la terminal remota? y una vez que se necesita estar en donde esta A mover/regresar/importar esta aplicacion de nuevo a A. LVM en sarge
hola, estoy interesado en instalar sarge sobre particiones LVM veo que en el disco de netboot ya trae esta opcion, me atrae mucho puesto que esto supone un maximo aprovechamiento del espacio en disco, Tengo experiencia en LVM de instalaciones que hice en fedora (en un pasado distante), funcionaba muy bien hasta que en una actualizacion ya no reinicio y no hubo ningun disco de rescate en la tierra que pudiera recuperar mi informacion :(, finalmente quede aterrado del los problemas potenciales que tiene, ahora que debian lo soporta de manera stable me gustaria que me contaran que tal jala y sobre todo si existen herramientas suficientemente potentes para poder recuperarse de fallos graves y no tan graves Otra pregunta, no me queda muy claro cual es el fin de los grupos de volumenes (GV), se que al hacer los volumenes puedes hacer cualquier particion y modificarla segun se necesite pero entonces los GV?, sera para tener varias distros en el mismo particionamiento de LVM? y sino, es posible despues de particionar un disco completo con LVM instalarle otra distro en una particion y que lilo o grub los puedan cargar?, que tal guindorks? bueno gracias por adelantado -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Mirroring problem with sarge

In any case im intrested in configuring correctly the gpg verification but i couldnt make out where to get the key to put in the ~/.gnupg/pubring.gpg file. Since now thx for the help. Sips, se puede, tanto por bluetooth como por usb. Lo más fácil es sincronizar contra evolution porque ya hay un plugin hecho, yo lo tengo contra un ldap que me resulta más comodo después porque no uso evolution como cliente de correo. Mirate la web del multisync y del synce, creo que andaban las dos por sourceforge. Mosix and Open Mosix package in sarge/sid
Hi, ppl This mail is just to find out if anyone knows what happend with the *mosix packages in the feuture releases of debian, sarge and sid. Mirror with some errors..
Hi ppl Im using debmirror to mirror debian with the following options debmirror -a i386 -s main,contrib,non-free -h ftp.debian.org -d stable / -d testing /home/debian/debian/ --nosource --progress This shuld mirror the main, contrib and non-free for the architectures stable and testing, without the sources. The problem is that when the mirror is compleat the dists/stable/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz is somehow deleted so I cant use the mirror. Does anybody have a clue of what could be wrong?? Strange behaviour updating Sarge
Hiya all, I move some machines to sarge to see how it does as production server, after a while updating apt-get update; apt-get upgrade, a use dselect to add some packages, then I notice that some package not within those i select to install or its dependencis where to be install or even remove. I did some aditional testin and the same happend in others machines. I allways thought that doing apt-get upgrade was exactly the same as apdating with dselect or aptitude, but it seams that those package managers take into consideration more things than apt-get does. Whats the correct method for keeping update a testing or unstable install, dselect/aptitude, apt-get or a mixture of the both. considering u have kdm installe, as root run dpkg-reconfigure kdm Set it as the default session manager. If u havent install kdm use dselect or aptitude select and install kdm. Hi ppl, got to put a dvd rw and cd-rw working in the same computer, i have allready a cd-rw working but have no clue where to start with the dvd rw, i have install the dvdplusrw package, by the way im runing woody, but the docs are not as clear as I need them. In some places it talks about a kernel patch but in others it claims that it can be done without one. Does any one knows a good howto to go streight to the dvd rw config, I only need it to write data no video o anything else. Problems updating sid

The problem is that i cant compleat an update becouse the iptotal program does not compleat the update, when i try to remove it the apt spit the following # apt-get remove iptotal Leyendo lista de paquetes... Tienes que usar el kernel bf24 con eso te reconoserá el scsi sin duda. De no ser así vas a tener que compilar tu propio kernel con los drivers para la tarjeta scsi que usas ese equipo. DAT-bandare..
Hej, har ett scsi-kort inmonterat nu, ett Tekram DC395UW. På det sitter en DAT-spelare från Seagate. Kör 2.4.18-kärnan under Deb 3.1. Jag har fixat in stöd i kärnan och jag kan se den fint. Kör jag mt -f /dev/st0 status får jag detta: drive type = Generic SCSI-2 tape drive status = 620757504 sense key error = 0 residue count = 0 file number = 0 block number = 0 Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x25 (unknown). Soft error count since last status=0 General status bits on (4101): BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN ..och det är ju finfint det antar jag. Om jag manipulerar bandet genom mt offline eller liknande så fungerar det fint. MEN..jag måste göra nåt galet vad gäller CPIO och TAR för att fixa in och ut data på bandet.. Kör jag t.ex find /backup -print | cpio -oc /dev/st0 så tar den det jättebra bara filerna bara är typ 2-3 st och väldigt små. Då får jag tillbaka prompten och bandaren svarar fortfarande på mt. Är det större filer, säger +5megg så kommer aldrig prompten tillbaka och bandaren är oresponsiv på mt och annat, markerat som busy, och en reboot är det enda som hjälper. Alla sorters varianter på KILL fungerar inte på cpio eller tar när den väl hängt sig. Om jag försöker lista sakerna på bandet efter jag läst dit små filer (som fungerar) så får jag faktiskt ut en lista. Jag kan också ta tillbaka dem. Men så fort det är någon slags mängd på grejerna så skiter det sig. Några förslag? Mer info som behövs från mig för att kunna uttala sig? TIA, UnKnown
Messup with apt-get dselect and sid
Hi people, got a little problem, I inherit a computer on my shob its a testing machine so it originally had sid installed upgraded from woody. The problem is that im not the only admin and the other one only use apt-get to install and remove packages, I, on the other hand, only use dselect to install and remove, and apt-get to update and upgrade. The problem is that when ever I use dselect to install something a bunch of thing drop to be installed which I didnt ask for. I belived that there was no problem using both apt-get and dselect, and that dselect would respect whatever apt-get would do, and with apt-get u wouldn't mess the things when u install a package. Ok: The problem was rather simple, the sistem depends on the imap to access the mail. After checking the horde imp apache apache-ssl and posgresql, I look to the simple and restart the inetd to reinciate the daemond. And magic works out. Thx to all for the help. Eso es algo raro a mi no me ha pasado algo igual, te recomendaría que revises el /etc/passwd y el /etc/shadow Por lo general para cambiar una password solo ejecutas el comando passwd desde el usuario al que le queres cambiar la passwd y con eso está borra la vieja y pone la nueva. pb souris avec switch ecran
Bonjour a tous ! Je dispose d'un unique ecran 15 que je partage avec mes machines par un switch Qui s'occupe d'ailleurs aussi du clavier et de la souris. Tous mes systèmes sont sous woody. Quand je suis en interface graphique sur un poste que je switch sur un autre et que je repasse au premier, la souris ne veut plus fonctionner. Je suis obligé de passer sur une console et de revenir sur ma blackbox pour que la souris fonctionne. Ce n'est pas vraiment pratique... Le clavier lui par contre fonctionne parfaitement ... SCSI y libc6 problemas para instalar.
Hola todos: Estoy instalando un nuevo server este es un ibm xSeries 220 y viene con 2 discos SCSI de 36Gb cada uno, El tema es que no consigo instalar linux primero se me tranca al bajar los datos en particular la libc6_2.2.5-6_i386.deb Tampoco he tenido suerte en hacer el sistema booteable creo que es por el scsi ya que me informa que lilo no se pudo instalar por tratar de instalarse por encima del cilindro 1023 y me recomienda crear un /boot por debajo de ese cilindro. Tienes que editar el archivo /etc/network/interfces ahí tenes la configuración de las interfaces, el man es bastante claro, pero cualquier cosa a las órdenes. Hola gente: He instalado el Open Office y casi todo anda bien, el tema es que cuando ejecuto el writer desde un usuario que no sea root se levanta el programa y luego de un rato se cierra. mientras que los demás componentes funcionan sin problemas. A veces da un mensaje avisando que se van a guradar los cambios, pero por lo general no avisa nada. Se agradese cualquier idea. Saludos, rak

Lo de los acentos ni pude verlo aun, si bien no tendría que haber problemas con una versión de oo en español y el debian castellanizado. Mutt no muestra acentos ni e~nes
Amigos debianeros, Cada tanto me pasa, que en mi Debian Unstable, el mutt no me muestra los acentos ni las eñes correctamente. Mientras estoy escribiendo este mensaje, funcionan todos los caracteres ASCII extendidos... áéíóú ÁÉÍÓÚ Ññ Pero al momento de leer los correos, me muestra cualquier cosa. Sí, es cierto, tengo configurado mutt para que utilice vi como editor, así que es vi quien me deja escribir esos caracteres, pero mutt no me los muestra bien. Winmodem conexat, no funciona el minicom ?
Hola gente: He instalado los drivers que vienen para los winmodem comexat HCF en el kernel 2.4.19 todo parese estar bien, los drivers se cargan y todo eso. Pero, y es que siempre hay un pero, no consigo que el minicom o el gkermit se comuniquen con el modem. El minicom no responde a los comandos de consola solo al ctrl-a-z y ninguna funcion me conecta a la linea. Sin embargo parese que el modem se inicializa correctamente, no tengo respuesta al AT Lo del gkermit ya es más grave, lo ejecuto y no doy con las opciones correctas para que se conecte al modem. Si alguien conose algún otro modo de prueba se agradese. Saludos, rak

Ok: a mí me pasó algo similar hace poco, y lo resolví recompilando el kernel, en realidad pasé de los 2.2 al 2.4.19, se que puede pareser medio jodido pero es bastante facil. Pero antes que nada averigua que tarjeta de red tenes, y fijate que draiver usan comparandola con el ethernet howto. No saques el loop device o lo ya que algunos procesos lo usan. Si queres probara antes hace un modprobe del modulo de la tajeta ej: Si tenes una tajeta dvicom haces modprobe dmef Pero primero averigua que tarjeta tenes. Yours its really one of the most intresting introspections that I have read on any of the debian lists. To beging with most of the people complayns on how hard is to work with debian compear with redhat or suse. Most say that it is a distro for gurus, or geeks who like dark and hiden knowledge, to do stuff that could be acomplish with a click under oder distros. If I may give you an advice from my ignorance. YOU are the ferst one who cares for what you are lerning, what is really amazing from my point of view. And if you have all that doubts inside the best thing you can do is to lose them, get other distro, try suse, redhat, mandrake, lindows, or even slackware, one of the rougest. And if you really feel that you are still not so shure tray the linux from scrach how to. It's gona take time but I think it worth the eford. Hola de nuevo: Tengo un problema algo raro, tengo que configurar la tarjeta de red en mi máquina y el kernel no detecta bien la tarjeta de red. Al principio pensé que era problema de la tarjeta realtek 8029 así que probé con otras 2 SMC drivers tulip y Dvicom. Pero no funcionaron tampoco. Al hacer un lspci -v obtengo que la tarjeta está configurada en el irq 0 y que probablemnte no funcione. Probé recompilar el kernel y tampoco funcionó. ¿Alguna idea? Saludos, rak

Hola, No estoy seguro pero da la impresion que no tenes bien configurado el XF86Config o XF86Config-4 depende de la distro. Tendrías que reconfigurarlo o si eso no anda revisarlo a mano. Si mandas el archivo de repente se te puede dar un amano. Hi, sebastaan The mrtg contacts the gateway in your case 192.168.1.254 asking for the statistics on trafic, normaly any router like Cisco or similar has the user public define to give away that information. Ok yo ando con m´as o menos el mismo problema que tu, y hasta ahora as´i me van las cosas. Primero tienes que averiguar que tipo de modem es hay dos, winmodems y de los de verdad, por lo que veo y no estoy seguro de eso tienes un winmodem. Estos son algo entreverados de configurar, como parte del trabajo del modem se hace por medio de tu cpu vas a precisar consegir los drivers para ese modem en particular. Te recomiendo que revises el winmodem howto en el Linux documentation proyect www.tldp.org ah´i vas a encontrar mas ayuda. Si el tuyo resulta ser un modem verdadero, cosa que dudo, es m´as facil y tendr´ias que ver el modem howto en el mismo lugar. Espero te halla servido de algo. Suerte y a las ordenes. Hola gente: Hace poco que instalé linux en la máquina de casa y tengo algunas dudas en como configurar la tarjeta gráfica, es una G-Force 2 MX 400. Estuve en la página de nvdia y bajé los archivos, del driver para el kernel y el glx. CUPS configuration
Hi, Is there a tool to configure printers in cups. I know about kups but this tool is not in the debian archive and I would prefer stay without kde libs. Ideally I would like a tool detecting available printers on the intranet (like kups do). Otherwise what is the best way to find and/or configure printers with cups? Problemas con Amavis-Sendmail-uvscan
Hola lista: Bien me he encontrado con algunos problemas, tengo un sistema corriendo sendmail, hace unos meses le agregamos el amavis para revisar los correos y usamos como antivirus el uvscan de mcafee. Esto nos está generando algunos problemas. Uno de ellos y el más preocupante es que se están acumulando mails en el mqueue algunos de ellos llevan vaios días olvidados ahi. Como general mente uso el exim ignoro si esto es problema del sendmail o se debe al amavis. Por otro lado proximamente estaremos migrando a otro equipo donde pienso instalar woody y como mta exim. pero sigo con el problema del amavis, alguien conoce otro agente que pueda recomendar? los filtros del exim son bastante potentes pero se les escapa el klez y afines, y sería un desastre si se empiesa a propagar nuevamente sobre los usuarios, se han hecho alguna actualización sobre eso. Hay algo mejor que el amavis para usar de filtro sobre exim, o alguien conoce alguna forma de conectar el uvscan directamente sobre los filtros del exim??? Gracias por su tiempo, rak
Grub problema con el menu
Hola gente: Estoy tratando de instalar hurd por lo cual instalé el grub en mi máquina. Hasta ahí todo bien, pero caundo reinicio la máquina no consigo que aparesca en menú y tengo que bootear igresando los parámetros a mano. Cree un archivo menu.lst en el directorio /boot/ pero doy con la tecla sobre que hacer ahora, probé con setup (hd0,1) segun la geometría de mi disco, dice que encuentra los archivos del kernel y tambien el menu.lst. Disculpen la molestia pero se me estaba empezando a secar el cerebro así que antes de que eso pasara desidí pedir ayuda. Desde ya mil gracias, rak

Hola lista: Tengo una máquina que se ha colgado varias veces, despues de un par conseguimos obtener el mensage que quedaba en consola ide0 : reset timed-out, status=0x80 busys hda: status timeout :status=0x80 busys hda: drive not ready for command end_request=i/o error, dev 03:02 (hda), sector 799536 este mensaje se repite varias veces, cambiando el númnero de sector. la que no se visualiza nada, una especie de zona muerta por la que ni
siquiera el ratón puede pasar. Además segun muevo el ratón por la pantalla
o por encima de iconos y ventanas se dibujan trozos de estas
aleatoriamente por el resto de la pantalla. Si paso el ratón por esos
dibujos virtuales estos se borran apareciendo en cualquier otro punto de
la pantalla. Muy extraño.
¿A alguien más le ha pasado algo como esto con el XFree86 4.1 ?
Tengo una SiS 6205 y 2 Mb de Memoria de video.
