Xterm question.....

2002-11-14 Thread Urban Gabor
Hi,

may be, this question is quite newbie. My xterm uses
xterm-debian setting, and I can't use backspace. How can I
solve this?

BTW I would prefer a personal CC as well, my mail provider
hangs sometime

Version control mailing list announced

2000-09-22 Thread Urban Gabor
Hi,

I have spent some time helping newbies to get around RCS for home or school
development projects, and I started
using CVS a few month ago for learning it. I was using ClearCase at my company
for two years and helped a lot of
new colleges to start with it. I realized that version control has some
features which are not depending on the tool
you use. My mailing list tries to help people in these general problems.

My other goal would be to help people to chose the most suitable versioning
tool for their projects.

If anyone of yua is interedted, please visit the following URL:

The term is set to 'xtern-debian'. What did I miss? I am
not on the list, send me back to freemail.hu

Ethernet question

2000-05-12 Thread Urban Gabor
Hello,

I have and Ethernet card in my HP Kayak, and the M$ NT
recognises it as:
HP Ethernet with Lan Remote Power.

I'd like to install slink, can I use the card as generic
Ethernet?

Thanx

dselect vs apt

1999-11-18 Thread Urban Gabor
Though it might be a lamer question, I would like to know the major
differences between dselect and apt. I do not upgrade my boxes via ftp, I
allways (more or less :-)) ) wait till the new release is assembled in CD
images. Why would I switch to apt?

Re: New release over due

1999-11-15 Thread Urban Gabor
IMHO using linux gives you the opportunity to update only if you do want
it. I am running hamm at home, slink in the office, and I am content with
them. You can have the lates packages one-by one, but I guess it is very
rare when you are forced really to upgrade.

BTW people with slow TCP/IP connection may find it very complicated to
download all packages directly from the NET. But they may find some
magazines with suplemental CD sets.

An other point. I do nothing for Debian (only answering some questions,
and helping some friends here), so I am happy to have such a good distro.

S3 Virge AGP

1999-10-11 Thread Urban Gabor
Hi,

I've an S3 Virge GX2 with AGP, and it seems to me, that causes some
stability problems in my Slink box. Which X server is recommended?
Is XF86-S3V 3.3.5 compatible with my card?

SQL engines

I am to write a home application for Linux that uses an SQL database. I

Which is the best solution and why? (The database is planned to be about

Re: the dselect debate

1999-07-21 Thread Urban Gabor
On Mon, 19 Jul 1999, Chris Dion wrote:

I'm new to both Linux in general and the debian distribution

easy to use and quite powerful. That's not to say that the interface

source available? If so, I'd like to take some of the suggestions and
concerns voiced on this list and have a go at improving the tool.
That's assuming my programming skills are up to the task ; )

 Thanks in advance,

 Chris Dion

I agree to that oppinion. My first encounter with dselect was very
tedious, but I could set up a systems in a few hours. I should admit, that
kept a dselect description by my hand for all the time.

I think, most new user find dselect interface outmoded, but that's only
psichology..

Re: Suggestion for Newbie Guide Lines

1999-07-20 Thread Urban Gabor
This idea should be very wellcome, since the larger portion of Linux
newbies has never seen a working Unix. (I myself was lucky enough to work
on AIX for 4 years as a user before I atempted my first Linux install..) A
10 pages-or so description of the most important commands and tools could
ease the life of the newcommers. The learning curce can be very steep in
that case too, when no install problems are to be overcome.

Re: Just my opinion

1999-07-14 Thread Urban Gabor
IMHO Texinfo and info is not so bad. I use emacs but read the info files
through the program info. The main advantage is that anyone can produce
very cool printouts, and no need for an overfancy web browser.

Installing Linux can be a very big challenge, but I do not want to
overstate it. My very first Debian install was bo, all in 3 hours. (No
net, no X, all dev stuff.) It went nice. My second install was hamm for a
friend, it was about 4-5 hours because he had some tricky hw gadgets. (No
net, X, important development stuff.) Most recently (last december) I
installed hamm for myself. It lasted for 5 hours, because I made some
wrong decision concerning hw settings. Though I must admit, I had 5 years
of user experience with IBM AIX.

Re: BE MORE SIMPLE!!!!

1999-06-10 Thread Urban Gabor
I do not want to continue the line, but I could not withold some comments:

The moral from the original rather rash message can serve very good the
whole Linux/Debian community. It is indeed very hard to convince people to
use Linux when the starting informaiton is filled with jargon. The users
coming from the M$ world are definitly used to be lazy in brains. I meen
no disrespect, but M$ makes you forget thinking. (Cf the subscription! :-)
)

I would suggest an other install description with step-by-step texts of
what to do. And redesinging Debian web site can help a lot.

Re: Separate list for newbies

1999-05-21 Thread Urban Gabor
I would advocate against it. My reasons are:

1. It would be a bad policy to isolate newcommers. How could we persuade
others to join the Linux (Debian..) community if we immadieatly throw them
into a secondary position.

2. One CAN learn much just scanning the mails. Newcommers too.

3. This 'joined' list makes us feel one gang, and is is definitly very
good.
