Debian Win95 files...
I have Win95 and Debian 1.3 on the same hard disk on my Amd 586 with Doc's Boot as an MBR. Being still pretty new to Linux, here's a question... I downloaded Netscape the other day for Linux, but had to use Winbloze to do it 'cause I _still_ haven't got ppp working... anyway, can I access the Win95 drive with Linux to retrieve Netscape? If so, how do I do that? I suppose I somehow need to set up Debian to recognize the Win95 partition...just not sure how to go about it don't want to trash everything! (I've been known to do that!!) Any suggestions? Debian Pgp question...
I have used Pgp for quite awhile with Win95, and thus have already made my secret key id number, etc. I would like to get pgp set up with Linux as I would like to move to using Debian exclusively. Anybody out there familiar with this issue of how I would use my same 1028 bit key (created under Dos, MIT pgp...2.6.2) without having to revoke the existing key a create a new one? Re: divide the list in beginners and advanced
Here, Here!! I for one would ask that we not divide the list I picked Debian as my first try with Linux after looking at all the distributions. I probably jumped in over my head (as you can tell from the questions I post... :-) everything I read said Debian was not the best choice for a newbie to start with. I have always been impressed with the amount of support for Debian, and for that reason, this is the path I took. I would hope someday to be in the position to pass it on and help others out. Sometimes when I'm going over the list I find answers to other questions that I had, somebody else just happened to ask them before I did! I always manage to learn something here, even reading the more advanced stuff... If I ever get my act together, maybe someday I'll even try to take on the maintenance of a Debian package... -- Steve Morrill Reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] PGP Pub key id: 0xF2459FCD Debian LINUX Where I really want to go today! -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Question re:Debian and ppp...
I have Debian 1.3 (from the Boot magazine cd) installed on my amd 586, and most things are working well...got XFree86 running, starting to learn my way around but still doing a lot of thrashing, and have rtfm'd til the wee hours. I'm trying to get a ppp connection to my ISP going and have run into some problems. I think I've got all my ppp files setup up correctly, using pon and poff, modem's dialing out, everything looks good until; (When I do a tail -f /var/log/messages, this is what I see...) When it appears the ppp link is up (like when it says Connect: ppp1, I try starting lynx, I get cannot access startfile http://www.oro.net; (my ISP) When I try ping, I get network is unreachable... Can anybody tell from this log if I've actually made a ppp connection? (Sorry if this is a _really_ stupid question...I'm real new at this!) The tech support guy at my ISP said I didn't need to do anything special to start ppp...but he did tell me I needed to do this from Xwindows...He's a umsdos linux'r. Oh yeah, and they're not using PAP. Oronet is using Debian linux for their server, btw! Also, I'm not on a network, I'm just a standalone box dialing into my ISP. Should my machine name be the same as my ISP username? or does it make a difference? Debian, xfree86 and netscape...
Sorry all, if this is too far off topic... I've got debian 1.3 up and running on my amd 586, can get thru to my isp via minicom and on the 'net with lynx. I just got netscape ver 3.04 installed, but I've missed something.. I startx, connect to my isp using minicom, but can't get netscape to connect. Is this a ppp issue, or as usual, something simple I've overlooked? Doh!! Of course you're right...(that large whooshing sound you heard must have been my brain fart) Guess I'll keep thrashing at this one. I'll put up with some of the spam, and as for misdirected mail, welll... being a complete Linux newbie, I've probably submitted my share. But I've learned a lot from the folks on this list. Question re: ViewSonic 15G S3 video card...
Hello all... I have a ViewSonic 15G monitor and an older JAX 8241 video card with an S3 805 chipset. I've got the boot magazine disk version of Debian installed on my 586 and so far everything's working great, except for I'm trying to get XFree86 up and running and am beating my brains out here trying to come up with the correct modeline combination for this monitor and card. I keep getting the squashed mode when X starts 'cause I'm obviously not getting the correct modeline set up. Does anybody out there have a similar combination they would be willing to share their modeline settings for? I'm very new at this. I think I've probably edited XF86Config at least 73 times by now, still not getting it right. Modem configuration
Ok, guys, I give... I have a base installation running from floppies (ver 1.3) on a 586 sharing a hard drive with win95. Everything works as it should, so far. I'm trying to get ppp running so I can ftp the packages I need. I'm a real newbie to linux, and I'm not understanding the setup process for my modem, an external usr 33.6 voice/fax (not a winmodem). I know my modem is on com 2 / irq 3. Do I need to make a link somewhere in /dev to get things rolling? When I do a dmesg it shows both serial ports... I've tried reading the howto and other documentation, but it seems I'm getting myself more confused by the minute. Can anybody direct me thru the sequence to get this thing running? I hear a lot of talk about minicom, but I don't have it yet. I think I got most of the IP stuff in right when I did the install, so I think all I need to get done is get my modem operable get ppp configured to get to my isp... Help please! Modem configuration, cont.
Thank you all for the response! And, yes, Dwarf, I have your new book I think it's a great help! Finally, something Debian specific! But I have to admit, I'm still just trying to get my modem working in the base (floppy install only) system. re-configuring things...
I have *another* newbie type question. (Do they ever stop?) I am using debian release 1.2 on my 586/133mhz. When I originally ran dselect after doing my base system install, I skipped over configuring a number of programs, like ppp, etc. I've also made some mistakes (I think) on some of my hardware items that need to be changed. Instead of taking the weenie route re-installing, is there a graceful way to go back and correct my blunders? I'd like to learn how to do this thing right (I think that's one of the reasons I'm trying to learn this stuff... :-) ) Any suggestions appreciated!! -- Steve Morrill Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED].. + PGP pub key id: 0xF2459FCD header changed to prevent spamming! + Linux..it's not just an OS, + it's an adventure! -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . fatal server error..
I am running Debian release 1.2 on my 586/133mhz...and trying to get XFree86 up and going... when I start up I get a message fatal server error: could not create audio connection block info and the machine seems to hang for quite awhile. Obviously there's something I haven't done here, but I'm still trying to get a handle on this stuff. any suggestions out there? mc..missing library!
I have debian release 1.2 installed on my 586/133mhz. I'm just learning how to move around in this system as I have no linux experience. When I try to start midnight commander, I get the following message: mc: can't load library 'libgpm.so.1' When I try to locate libgpm.so.1 using find, I can't find it. Under /usr/lib/ I do find 'libgdbm.so.1'. Is this the file I'm actually looking for, like an updated version or something? Or is there a link or something I need to make so mc can find the appropriate file? My base system seems to be OK, however I'm getting similiar messages as the above when I try to start some programs, or when I try to start XFree86. I loaded my packages off the cheapbytes cd, and I thought everything was there...maybe I'm missing something or didn't link some things that I was supposed to? help with printing, please...
sorry, this is a second request... Is there any way I can send what's actually showing on the on the screen to the printer? I'm trying to get XFree86 running and getting a lot of error messages. I'd like to be able to print these out so I can try to address the problems without having to write everything down... As is obvious, I'm really new at this Linux stuff, so I'm still very much in the thrashing around stages. I'm using Debian Release 1.2 on a 586 / 133 mhz coexisting with winbloze95... I can't even get my ppp stuff going yet so I have to still use winbloze to connect to the 'net.. I'm so ashamed!! :( TIA --- Steve Morrill Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED].. + PGP pub key id: 0xF2459FCD header changed to prevent spamming! + Linux..it's not just an OS, + it's an adventure! Question about dselect..
I have a base debian system installed on my 586 133 mhz. I got the Cheap Bytes cd and am trying to install packages, specifically the Xwindows packages. These are located in a directory called rex-fixe on the cd. I must be missing something here, but I cannot get dselect to recognize that directory. I've tried letting the program scan the various directories on the cd, tried over over to do it manually to no avail. I've read the faq, etc. on dselect. I'm new to linux, so (once again..) I'm sure this is user error. Any suggestions out there? TIA!!
cdrom problem...
I have a base Debian system installed from floppies on my 586 133mhz. My hd is partitioned for Windoze95 and for Debian. I ran fips, am using a boot mgr, everything going fairly well until I get to the point of trying to get my cdrom running under linux. Please help, 'cause I'm rippin' my hair out here! I've got a quad speed creative labs cdrom with a soundblaster 16 sound card. It works fine with winblows... I bought my Debian CD from CheapBytes with all the goodies on it, and there it sits, patiently waiting... I've read the howto's that I think apply, I couldn't find anything in the dejanews archives, and I even bought my Linux in a Nutshell book. I've tried the ATAPI/IDE driver, nothing. I have no SCSI devices in my system. I bought this system in 1995..were creative labs cdroms still proprietary, or interfaced thru the sound card? I know this is probably just a really dumb user error, and there's probably a simple fix, but it eludes me :-( Any suggestions, please? TIA!
