I would suggest using the i386, unless you have specific requirements
for amd64, because it has a better support for certain ('non-free')
software.

From my i386's aptitude:
$ aptitude show linux-image-2.6-686-bigmem
[...]
Linux 2.6 image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/P4
This package depends on the latest binary image for Linux kernel 2.6 on
Pentium Pro/Celeron/Pentium II/Pentium III/Pentium 4 with 4-64G RAM
machines.

So, unless you have more than 64G of ram you should be fine with i386.

Cheers,
Johannes

Try Debian 6/testing/squeeze. you only need CD 1 for basic desktop
 installation.
 http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

Well, if debian 5 'lenny' does not work, you could try that. However, I
would strongly encourage new users to start out with the stable release
(lenny) before moving to 'testing'.

Cheers,
Johannes

Please use full english and not SMS language. I hope you meant :not
able to install instead of is able to ...

Can you describe where the loading stops? What other distro's you have
tried? As far as i know there is no special Debian for Sony Vaio

PS: I know most of people do not follow email niceties (mostly they
are not aware) but if you follow bottom post/in-line post style of
email conversations it becomes a whole lot easier to carry on
meaningful dialogue and you can snip out what is not meaningful too.
Most people just hit reply button and top post leaving prior message
appended uselessly at bottom. See if you can adopt this style and
persuade others. In case you are already doing this . great,
spread the message.

I think debian should work for your machine. is your CPU 64bit? generally it
should be, download the AMD64 iso to record the installation cd,
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-500-amd64-CD-1.iso
you do not need to record a dvd, for most of the installed packages will be
updated after you install.

Hello Santhosh,

Which version of Red Hat did you install? 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3?
Most of the red hat 5 versions don't have the latest drivers for the newest
Laptops, PCs, etc.
If you just bought that Sony Vaio or is a recent model, perhaps it would be
easier to install Linux using Ubuntu, which has a more updated driver
database and it's based on Debian.
Here you can download Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Nevertheless someone already pointed these URLs where you can download
Debian Lenny without a hassle:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/

Direct link, DVD version:
AMD64(if your laptop has more than 3GB of RAM):
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0/amd64/iso-dvd/

i386(if your laptop has less than 3GB of RAM):
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0/i386/iso-dvd/

There is also a CD version http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/ of debian
but I personally recommend you to download the DVD version depending your
laptop's RAM(which I already explained before) which is easier for a newbie
to install.

Adios.
