be any original comment in what is sure now to be an enormous thread
is near-zero and I don't see what relevance it has to Debian users,
only to users in the Red Hat ecosystem.

This topic has honestly been done to death already in many other

it up here.

As a suggestion, have a read of this:

and then in the unlikely event you have something to say/ask that
has not already been brought up there, bring it up there - where it

Again, I strongly doubt that there is any viewpoint, opinion,

Eighteen years ago I successfully argued at my company that the Red Hat
revamp into "Enterprise Linux" meant that we were going to incur switching
costs -- so we should switch to something with a better upgradability
story. That something was Debian, which all of the sysadmins admitted
to preferring at home anyway.

I have not seen any reasons to reject that decision.

It seems likely to me that IBM's threat to drop customers who redistribute
their GPL'd packages is a GPL violation in itself. Lawyers will no doubt
be involved.

Many of the systems that Red Hat/IBM funded or adopted are systems that
have caused me excess grief when they were brought into Debian.

I hope that everybody actually using and developing these systems does
well in the end. I have no fondness for corporations, especially IBM
and Oracle.

I used Syslinux for several years to boot linux from DOS, and it
was fine for doing one thing.

My memory of Lilo is that it was no fun during the days of switching
from CHS to LBA addressing on disks. Some people swear by it, just not me.

Give me the Grub shell any day.

BTW you can make grub.cfg look much simpler, either by writing it
yourself (there's not much to it), or doing what I do: postprocessing
it. I translate UUIDs to LABELs, and prune out some stuff I know I
don't need. It makes it less of a shock when you press "E" on an entry.

Suggesting a roundabout way of installing a package that doesn't even
achieve the expected purpose can be actively harmful.

Might I suggest you actually test your proposed solutions before posting

While I'd roughly agree (I never understood why a boot loader has
to grok 10-15 different file systems [0] or why it wants graphical
themeability), there's a significant pressure from the "platform"
side, so concentrating developer power makes sense. Keeping
lilo/syslinux afloat in view of ever more baroque pre-boot environments
you thought UEFI was it? Ha, ha) is a non-trivial task. You want to
take care of it? Thought so :)

Grub seems to be where some developer power concentrates currently,
perhaps because the different Linux distros pour some into it. If
you want to keep an alternative viable, you gotta get your trousers
dirty :)

But, please. This is deeply unfair:

Yes I know, grub have so much more but sometime you don't need that much
and this just make it more complicated.

A bit like using Microsoft Office 2020... There's so much stuff you
don't need that the options you are looking for feel dissolved in
everything else. So you just find it harder than when it was Word 6.0 or
even better WordPerfect 5.1

It's quite simple really. Grub doesn't know why it was invoked, it's
just run because something changed. And, as usual, it looks at the
/current/ state of the system to ascertain how to build grub.cfg.

If you want to be able to set and change the default entry to boot,
that's straightforward to do with GRUB_DEFAULT and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT
in /etc/default/grub, assuming certain conditions.¹

Why do I state "reinstall" instead of install ?
Because he already has the linux-image-4.19.0-16-amd64
So it will only say "already installed".
By forcing "reinstall" you also make sure it gets as default kernel for

While taking no view on the cause of the problem, I would
recommend that you eliminate a kernel problem by running
version 16 of the kernel.

You should barely need to lift a finger to achieve this,
because version 16 should (a) still be installed, and
(b) be listed in the Grub menu under "Advanced options".

Cheers,
David.

Probably, but I can attest that

openjdk-11-jre-headless

runs Minecraft servers perfectly well with that kernel, so
perhaps switching Java runtimes is a less drastic choice.

documentation

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Oracle%20Instant%20Client

format RPM via 'alien'.

- make-3.80
- binutils-2.15.92.0.2
- gcc(x86_64)-3.4.6
- libaio(x86_64)-0.3.105
- libaio-devel(x86_64)-0.3.105
- libstdc++(x86_64)-3.4.6
- elfutils-libelf-devel-0.97
- sysstat-5.0.5
- libgcc(x86_64)-3.4.6
- libstdc++-devel(x86_64)-3.4.6
- elfutils-libelf(x86_64)-0.97
- glibc-common-2.3.4
- glibc-devel(x86_64)-2.3.4
- gcc-c++(x86_64)-3.4.6
- compat-libstdc++-33(x86_64)-3.2.3
- expat(x86_64)-1.95.7

État d'echec:
- glibc(x86_64)-2.3.4-2.41

   # apt-get install xorg xserver-xorg-core libaio1 sysstat gcc g++ expat
build-essential libdb1-compat binutils rpm sudo unzip
   # echo "Red Hat Linux release 3.0 (drupal)"  > /etc/redhat-release
   # mkdir /var/lib/rpm; rpm --initdb; rpm --rebuilddb

Note:

Merci d'avance.

Cordialement,
Thierry

qemu with KVM support compared to professional virtualization products from VMware or Oracle

Hi,

I need to virtualize few dozen virtual-machines for production

provided by qemu with KVM support where each utility has its own
specific purpose. For example I set up the virtual switch with
ip/brctl utility or use single qemu executable to crate
virtual-machines. However, is qemu with KVM support as
suitable(stability, reliability) for production environment as so to
say professional virtualization products from VMware or Oracle?

I would say so. I'm running several kvm machines, and have never had
any problems with stability. As a simple (but quite sufficient)
interface I'd recommend virt-manager to create, clone and operate
virtual machines, I find it just as usable as VMware or Virtualbox.
There are other interfaces that simplify common tasks, but virt-manager
takes care of most of what I need to do.

Also, if there are bugs, I'd expect them to be fixed quickly, as a lot
of (big) organizations depend on kvm. Support for kvm/qemu is also
quite good, there are a lot of people with lots of experience with it
out there.

say professional virtualization products from VMware or Oracle?

Do you mean professional or do you really mean commercial? I'd say
kvm meets professional standards.

You could just try it out with a few VM's, and see what you think. It
wouldn't cost you anything, except your time.

My VPS provider (DigitalOcean) relies on kvm for their day-to-day
business, as does many other big names in the industry, so you
shouldn't need to worry about it being inferior to VMware just because
it doesn't come with a pricy licence.

Debian Wheezy + Chrome + Java Oracle 8

Bom dia pessoal,

http://www.webupd8.org/2014/03/how-to-install-oracle-java-8-in-debian.html

All it does is fetch Oracle Java, straight from Oracle and install it.
Then it updates alternatives and your browser. THAT is the major benefit
of it, that you don't have to bleed from your eyeballs trying to do all
of that on your own. That much is pretty much standard between Ubuntu,
Debian, Mint, etc. It does not install anything else from that ppa, just
a script that does what it does. Keep in mind that many do not even know
of the existence of alternatives. Plus, it will auto-update to the
latest Java version in the usual apt-get update apt-get upgrade session.

Or, continue to use the brass-knuckles method of installing Oracle Java
on your own. Hint: You will never get alternatives set correctly, unless
you are a real dyed-in-the-wool guru. I just checked out the how-to for
java-package. That appears to be a lot of work. I'll stick with the
method I use. I never have to touch it. Ric

On Wheezy you can make a debian package of the latest java.
It just works.

Install java-package from Sid.
Download the latest java package.
Use java-package to make a debian package.
Use dpkg -i to install the debian package.

e.g. for last jre on Wheezy (after installing the Sid java-package):-
Removed symbolic links to libnpjp2.so and libjavaplugin_oji.so from
/plugins directories

Removed previously installed versions from /usr/lib/java and /usr/lib/jvm

Iceweasel → Tools → Addons → Plugins
Disabled and removed earlier Java version

In the same directory as the recently downloaded Oracle java package:-
# make-jpkg jre-7u21-linux-i586.tar.gz
su -c “dpkg -i oracle-j2re1.7_1.7.0+update21_i386.deb”
Password:

The problems with java come from allowing untrusted compiled code to
run natively on your machine (WebStart). Web services, databases,
Android apps, etc don't have this issue. However, I'm pretty sure you
can write Scala/Clojure WebStart apps that would have the same issues
as native Java has here.

The Java culture tends to piss me off so I try to stay away from it
(and I like scripting languages better anyway).

AFAIK, the issue with Oracle is their release cycle (not sure if

I think that this problem arises with EVERY and EACH programming

  Web services, databases,

And maybe you use eval() type functions. A door that must be carefully

Sorry, may be my question is not clear,

I mean : what will be happen if oracle decides to close the software ???

same reason for what libreoffice ( instead of openoffice ) and Mariadb (

am I wrong??

is it not same pb?

Yep, with the same solution. AFAIK there are a set of specifications that
everybody can follow to build a JVM.

The Free Software world could even drop explicit compatibility.

But it's unlikely. Closing Java more than it's closed now would mean
KILL the technology. Java has all this hype thanks to Free Software
(Apache Software Foundation in primis).

is there a risk to program in java since sun is bought by oracle ?

Re: is there a risk to program in java since sun is bought by oracle

No, there are several open implementations of the jdk, java is the recommended
language for Android, and oracle has continued to support java well. Maybe
someone knows something that I don't, but it seems like you should hack in the
language you like best.

http://www.duinsoft.nl/packages.php?t=en

   - put the line
   deb http://www.duinsoft.nl/pkg debs all
in the file /etc/apt/sources.list, either using Software Sources from

   or:
put this line in a file named (e.g.) duinsoft.list in the directory

   - import the gpg key with the command (all on one line)
   sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 5CB26B26
   - enter the commands (two lines)
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install update-sun-jre
or use Synaptic to install the package
   - installation of the Runtime Environment will follow automatically

update-java-alternatives -l

Instalando Oracle Java 7 no Debian

2014-01-12 Thread Vinicius

desenvolvimento do Android.

Baixe o pacote jdk, server-jdk
ou jre da Oracle conforme a necessidade. Não baixe o RPM, precisa ser o
outro pacote, que não é RPM.

Rode o comando make-jpkg arquivo baixado da Oracle. Ele vai gerar um
.deb. Instale o .deb gerado. Pronto.

Oracle, de hecho hoy he recibido varios, p. ej.:

http://www.securityfocus.com/bid/57692

bug humano :-)

[OT] Error usando Java 7 SE de Oracle

2013-05-01 Thread Eduardo Rios
aplicaciones de Oracle As Form Services.

1.1.8.2 o superior

No veo ningún problema.

lrwxrwxrwx 1 sjlopezb sjlopezb 58 abr 18 23:01 libjavaplugin_oji.so
- - /usr/java/jre1.7.0_21/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 sjlopezb sjlopezb 42 abr 18 23:01 libnpjp2.so -
/usr/java/jre1.7.0_21/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
